"AYAKA - THE EVE OF A SPECIAL WEDDING" (Novel)
TRANSLATION: NARU-KUN
PROLOGUE: JINGI & SANGO
* List of Chapters
The island is called Ayaka Island.
From Ayaka Island, which is made up of seven islands, people live mainly in Ichinoshima and Ninoshima in the north, and only one person lives permanently in Sannoshima. "Shinoshima" is considered a sacred object of worship by residents, and entry is generally prohibited.
So what are the islands like beyond?
Ayaka Island is an archipelago made up of seven islands. If so, there should also be "Gonoshima", "Rokunoshima" and "Nananoshima". If you have at least some interest in geography, you will probably have these types of questions. Visit the Ichinoshima library, take out an old map and confirm that the islands exist. If you're curious, you'll probably want to try it yourself.
But there is no way to go.
People in the town hall, railway workers on the sea train or fishermen sailing the nearby seas. When you ask about "the island beyond", everyone will just shake their head. You can't go there. The islands are isolated from the outside world by complicated ocean and air currents, and cannot be reached by normal means.
Normal media.
So can we get there using special means?
No one will answer that question.
If the questioner has good intuition, he will intuit that the answer is yes. You can probably guess it from the uncomfortable expressions on the faces of city officials, railroad workers, and fishermen.
And they too, sensing what the questioner has guessed, will say this to remind him.
"Don't try to go beyond Gonoshima. If you still want to be human."
++++++++++
That day, Sakawa Jingi was unusually alone.
The reason Yukito, who normally stays as a bonus, is not there is because his teacher, the Great Immortal Yanagi Makoto, has taken him away. He doesn't know where or what he went to. There are many mysteries surrounding Yukito Yanagi, who came to Ayaka Island as Yanagi's son three years ago, and like today, it happens once a month that Yanagi takes him somewhere.
He wondered if Yukito will cry again.
Although he was a little worried about it, it was comforting to be alone for the first time in a long time. Although Jingi likes his younger brother, there were, of course, times when he was lonely as a child, and he couldn't help but feel a sense of relief in his absence.
Should he invite his friends Kotaro Yashiki and Koichi Saruwatari to hang out with him, or maybe he should just catch some fancy fish and go sell it? While he was thinking about that, Jingi was walking aimlessly on the sandy beach.
He found a girl.
''......''
Jingi looked at the girl for a while, her flip flops getting wet from the waves. She was probably seven or eight years old, about the same age as him. Her long, wavy hair is blue-black and her eyes are pale red. Her thin pale blue dress was soaked and she had no shoes on her feet, which were sunk in the sand.
The reason Jingi was staring at the girl was because he was fascinated by her beauty... but of course not. She was simply an unknown face. Unlike Ichinoshima, the number of residents in Ninoshima is limited and it can be said that all children of the same age know each other.
"Who are you?"
Her pale red eyes turned to Jingi.
Her pale red lips parted, but no sound came out. Her expression was one of astonishment. It's like he didn't even know where she was.
Jingi tilted his head thoughtfully.
Since he has never seen her face, she could be a girl from Ichinoshima or a tourist. However, the fact that she was soaked and barefoot bothered him. It's still too early to play in the water, so he wondered if she fell off a tour boat somewhere and was swept away by the current by chance.
As he thought about that, tears suddenly appeared in the girl's eyes.
"Ah..."
The girl's shocked expression collapsed and she covered her face with her sand-covered hands as large tears fell.
Jingi grew impatient. Although he gained notoriety in Ninoshima at a young age, he was not so bad that he could remain calm in front of a crying girl. He quickly put down the backpack he was carrying and began frantically searching for something to calm the girl down.
There was a half-drunk cider.
Jingi grabbed it, took off the cover, and approached the girl as he kicked the sand and grumbled.
"Hey!"
The girl looked up. Every time she blinked, tears fell like jewels.
"This! Here! Don't cry!"
The girl looked at the bottle of cider that she had pressed to her nose as if it were something she was seeing for the first time.
The girl took the bottle.
"......?"
Still, she did nothing but tilt her head and continue looking. Jingi was furious and imitated drinking from the bottle.
"Hey, don't you know cider? That's how you drink it."
"......"
The girl followed him obediently. When she put her mouth over the bottle and tilted it, the carbonated liquid flowed into her mouth.
"Eh?! Pueh, cough, cough!"
She choked profusely.
Jingi caught the bottle of cider that she accidentally dropped. Looking at the back of the girl's head as she coughed, Jingi became even more anxious. He was afraid that she would start crying again, but she betrayed his expectations.
"Hehe, hehe."
The cough gradually turned into a happy voice. The girl looked up and looked at Jingi. She was laughing and her nose was running.
"It's so sweet and soft. Fufufu!"
"...Heh."
With that, Jingi also relaxed and laughed.
When he offered the bottle again, the girl accepted it naturally. She began to drink it slowly, as if she were taking a sip. Jingi sat next to her, who stuck out his salty tongue every time she asked. Their butts were cold from the wet sand, but none of the children on the island care about that.
"Hey, what's your name?"
"......?"
Once again, the girl looked at Jingi curiously, and then...
"Sango."
That's what she answered.
"Sango." He murmured softly, pointing at his chest with his thumb.
"I'm Jingi. Have you ever heard of Ninoshima's Jingi?"
"No."
Sango immediately shook her head, but Jingi didn't feel particularly discouraged.
"Oh, there it is. So, you're from outside. Where do you come from?"
"......"
After blinking several times, Sango looked around her and pointed in a certain direction.
"Over there."
She made a straight line to the horizon.
"Hmm. Maybe Tokyo. Well, let's go, Sango."
"Where to?"
"Anywhere, though. There's no point in being depressed in a place like this."
With that, Jingi stood up and started walking quickly.
Sango was staring at his back, still clutching the cider bottle. When he looked back after taking about five steps, she tried to get up in a panic and fell.
"Aaah."
The cider came out of her hand and fell onto the sand, and the carbonated water flowed onto the sand. Jingi sighed and approached Sango again.
"What are you doing?"
"...It's been a long time since Arukuno."
"Eh?"
Jingi frowned. He turned his back on Sango and crouched down, wondering if all the city's inhabitants were like this or if they all walked autonomous paths.
"It's really strange living in a city. Look."
"Eh..."
"I'll put you on my back. I bet you can't even ride on my back."
"No."
Jingi leaned down, resting Sango's weight firmly on his back, and then slowly stood up. As expected, she weighed more than Yukito, but not so much that he couldn't walk. Staggering, Jingi stood up from the sandy beach.
(For now, let's go back home. She's probably lost and if I take her to an adult, they'll probably be able to take care of her.), Jingi thought.
Suddenly.
Something shiny appeared in front of him.
"Ah?"
When he looked closely, it looked like some kind of jewel. It was small and flat, and although it was exposed to sunlight, it gave off a mysterious glow. Sango, who was clinging to Jingi's neck, had grabbed the gem before he realized it.
"What is this?"
Sango was close to his ear as she answered the simple question.
"Kisuirin."
"Eh?"
Jingi had no idea what that was.
However, his eyes turned to "Kisuirin". The jewel, whose brilliance changed intricately depending on the angle and reflected a variety of colors, was more beautiful than anything Jingi had seen in his short life.
Just when he was thinking, "Wow, how beautiful!", Sango was next to his ear again.
"In exchange for the cider. Do you want it?"
"What?! Really?"
"Oh, really."
At times like this, Sakawa Jingi was a boy who didn't hold back. He quickly grabbed it with one hand, raised it so that he could see it through the sun, and then let out an innocent voice.
"Yay! Thanks, Sango! Even if you ask me to give it back, I won't!"
"Yes."
Sango chuckled as she placed her lips on the back of Jingi's neck.
"Alright."
+++++++++++
Unfortunately, there was no one in the Amamiya residence.
Well, in that case, he just had to wait until they return. Leaving Sango on a cushion in the living room, Jingi tossed her a towel and a change of clothes. This is the clothes that Grandma Amamiya wears.
As expected, he couldn't help the girl change her clothes, so a few minutes after closing the sliding door, Sango's voice said, "Okay.", and Jingi opened it again.
"Uwah!"
He couldn't help but be surprised.
An excess of lace adorns the collar of the pale beige shirt. That is what is called Baba shirt. Seeing little Sango wearing it as a dress was indescribably funny. Sango tilted her head in confusion, but then noticed her reflection in the glass window and let out a laugh.
After laughing for a while, Jingi brought snacks and juice. The idea was that, if he ate it alone, he would be scolded for it, but if he excused himself by saying that he had served it to a customer, he would be forgiven.
"Hey, where do you come from?"
Jingi asked as he popped the bun, Sango idly dangling her legs on the terrace.
"Kisui no Sato."
"Sato? Is there such a city in Tokyo?"
"What is Tokyo?"
"What, you don't know about Tokyo?"
Sango shook her head.
Jingi crossed his arms and growled.
"Hmm..."
Sango bowed her head and crossed her arms in the same way.
"Hmm?"
"No, you don't have to imitate me. And then what? You're not from Tokyo, are you? Ichinoshima, then?"
Sango shook her head.
"Mmm.", Jingi groaned again. Sango tried to imitate him again, but he ignored her and thought about it.
It is not Tokyo, Ichinoshima or Ninoshima. To begin with, he found it very strange that she didn't know anything about Tokyo. Even small children who live in the countryside know Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto, and many of them want to go there one day.
So where exactly does Sango come from?
At that, Jingi stopped thinking.
"Well, I don't care. Here, eat this too. It's delicious."
"Yes."
As he gave Sango a dango, Jingi thought, "I should leave the rest to the adults."
He didn't have to think about where that girl came from. At that moment, what was more important was how many snacks he could eat with that broth.
Sango sat next to Jingi and started picking up some dango.
"Hey, Jingi."
"Yes?"
"The Kisuirin, which I mentioned before. Please take good care of it."
As she spoke in a hesitant tone, her pale red eyes looked at Jingi.
Jingi shivered involuntarily.
It was because she had a sharp gaze that was unbecoming of a childish person, as if she was looking directly at something.
However, Jingi was also a child. If a woman is scared, she will cry because of the infamous "Arakure Jingi" that echoes throughout Ninoshima. He puffed out his chest and spoke loudly.
"Okay! Even if you ask me to give it back, I won't!"
"I understand."
Sango smiled and put her index finger to her lips. At that moment, she had returned to being the innocent girl she was before.
Although he was suspicious of the change, he was not deeply worried. He stood up from the porch and pointed to the ceiling.
"There's a game in my room, so let's play."
"Yes, I will! What's the game?"
"You don't know either... well, I'll tell you. Bring that with you."
Sango started walking towards Jingi, carrying a tray of sweets. After almost falling, Jingi took the tray of sweets, sighed, and started walking up the stairs.
After that, they played several games together for a while.
He didn't really know anything about Sango. She seemed to have never seen television, much less a games console, and she looked curiously at the screen, asking all kinds of questions.
(Seriously, where does this girl live?)
That question came up again. However, as he taught Sango how to play and watched her play with fascination, he began to not care about it anymore. Watching Sango animate and move her body the way the 3D modeled characters flew and jumped was much more interesting than the game he had been playing all the time.
Finally, Grandma Miya returned.
Jingi briefly explained the situation to the old woman whose eyes widened when she saw Sango. The Amamiya family has owned the lands of Ninoshima for generations, and Grandma Amamiya has hidden power as a local celebrity. If you leave it to her, she won't care about it.
As expected, the situation went exactly as Jingi had planned.
Although the old woman was surprised, she still did not abandon the lost girl. She called some acquaintances, who called other acquaintances, and so on, and the information about "Kisuigu Sango" spread throughout the island in the blink of an eye.
However, that was all he expected.
Two hours after Grandma made the first call, many people began to enter and leave Amamiya's house. From the other side of the door he can hear whispers, sighs and desperate voices. He started listening to them all the time and it affected Jingi's concentration.
That's why he lost the match. Seeing the character fall into the hole, Jingi handed the controller to Sango and tried to open the door to see what was happening.
The door opened by itself.
On the other side, the old woman Amamiya and Makoto Yanagi were standing.
"Huh, Master? What's wrong?"
Looking at Makoto's expression, Jingi intuitively felt an unusual presence.
A calm and relaxed person who doesn't care about small details is the usual attitude of Makoto Yanagi, the "Great Hermit". He was staring at Sango with a stern look on his face that he had never seen before. Makoto asked Grandma Amamiya in a low voice.
"Is that the girl?"
"Yes."
Makoto nodded and entered the room. The old woman quickly grabbed Jingi's hand as he looked stunned.
"Jingi. Come here."
"No."
Reluctantly, Jingi left the room. Sango looked back. She compared Makoto and Jingi, who was about to be taken away.
Her pale red eyes blinked anxiously.
Jingi screamed desperately as his grandmother carried him away.
"Master! She is not a bad girl!"
Makoto looked at Jingi and smiled bitterly.
"I won't do anything too harsh. I just want to confirm something."
With that, he closed the door behind him.
As his grandmother carried him downstairs to the living room, Jingi kept looking back.
That was the last time Jingi and Sango met face to face.
"This girl is the daughter of Kisui Palace."
Later, Makoto explained it properly. With a serious expression on his face, which he doesn't always have, he sat him down in front of him and had a face-to-face conversation with him. Kurama and Ibuki came to see what was going on, but Makoto left them outside. It was rare that Makoto explained things so kindly and in detail to Jingi, his third disciple.
"Kisuinomiya is a prominent family in Gonoshima. They live their own lives in Gonoshima and have almost no connection with other human societies, do you understand what I'm saying?"
Jingi blinked a few times and then shook his head.
"Ah.", Makoto took a deep breath. He grabbed the tray of cigarettes that was next to her and let the spark fall.
"Well, that's right. That girl is a different creature from us. Don't forget everything that happened today, Jingi."
"......"
"I don't care if she is any other spiritual person, but Kisui Palace is really bad. They operate with a different logic than us. However, that girl seems to like you. If you don't do it right, you will be tricked."
Jingi thought for a moment and then asked.
"What happened to Sango?"
Makoto responded, exhaling smoke into the air.
"I will respectfully return her to Gonoshima. Like I said, I won't do anything abrupt. You and that girl will continue to live your lives as before."
Jingi didn't understand half of what Makoto was saying.
What he barely understood is that Sango lives in a different world than Jingi and his friends.
His friend who came from somewhere and played with him for a while was about to return home. He wasn't that obsessed with trying to restrain her, but he just asked a question that came to mind.
"Will we ever meet again?"
Makoto narrowed his eyes and shook his head silently.
"It's impossible. Give up."
Jingi nodded obediently.
"I understand."
There was no lie. Although he was known as a bad boy, he respected Makoto from the bottom of his heart. If Makoto, the great hermit and master of connections, says it is impossible, then it must really be impossible.
Still, he couldn't help but feel discouraged. Seeing Jingi with his head lowered, Makoto scratched his cheek awkwardly and then said in a serious tone:
"Ah... sorry to ask at a time like this, but did you get anything from that girl?"
Jingi looked up. Makoto drew an oval in the air with his finger, the size of a boiled egg.
"It's about this size and it's like shiny scales. If you have it, show me."
Jingi looked directly at Makoto and said in a clear voice:
"I have not received anything."
It was a big lie. He respected Makoto from the bottom of his heart, but that was different. She gave it to him, so it's his. If he showed that "Kisuirin" there, Makoto would probably confiscate it. He refused that.
Makoto didn't seem to have any doubts. "I see." He replied simply, and stroked Jingi's head with his large palm.
"I'm sorry. She's a friend you had a hard time making."
Those words made him feel a little guilty. But at the same time he started to think: "Okay, if that's the case, I won't be able to find out." Jingi didn't even respond and looked down with a solemn expression on his face.
The "Kisuirin" glowed silently in Jingi's pocket.
Twelve years have passed since then.

TROPE MASHUP
Stranded on a desert island+ poorly timed confession
MirSan?
Oooh ya know @mrfeenysmustache I don't think I've ever actually written MirSan before? Let's see how this goes:
--
Sango tore at the lowhanging tree limbs with more force than was likely necessary. How did these things always happen to her? Her life was straight out of a bad sitcom and the writers clearly hated her as a character. It had started out innocently enough. A nice little boat ride out into the lake. A lovely view, calm waters, her boyfriend Miroku showing just one more of his unlikely skills at being an expert rower and navigator.
In hindsight she could understand why he had chosen that moment to turn and ask her to marry him.
And her panicking and flipping the boat probably wasn't exactly the romantic moment he was expecting, but honestly after all these years together he should really know better than to spring this kind of thing on her. Hopefully the ring hadn't been too expensive - even though they were close enough to swim to the shore of one of the small islands the oar and the ring were definitely gone forever. Maybe her ruined proposal would be good for tourism. Fifty years from now some scuba diver or fisherman would find it and start a rumor that the island had pirate treasure or some other nonsense.
She finished collecting the small branches and made her way back to the beach where Miroku was sitting, staring blankly out into the sunset. From behind it was hard to tell if he was pissed or depressed - honestly she wasn't sure which option she prefered. She added the foliage to the small stack they planned to burn to signal their distress then walked towards the water. She ditched her shoes and sat down beside him, digging her toes into the warm sand.
"A simple no would have been fine ya know," said Miroku, breaking their long silence.
"A simple proposal would have been fine, too," she quipped back. "I don't need - or want - these kinds of grand gestures Miroku, you know that. Or I thought you did."
She let out a short huff through her nose then finally looked at her boyfriend. It was instantly clear to her just how upset he was. He really thought she was saying no? Sure she'd been caught off guard in the actual moment, but they'd talked about getting married before and she'd never given him any reason to think she didn't want this. His moment had been properly ruined, though, and she needed to make it right.
"Come on," she said, "we need to get started on our signal."
She stood and grabbed one of her sticks, but instead of starting a fire, she carried it back towards the shore and began to carve giant letters into the sand.
"What are you doing?" asked Miroku. "It'll be dark soon, nobody will see that."
"Somebody will," she said coyly, finishing the last letter and stepping out of the way. She watched as Miroku finally smiled for the first time in hours looking at the YES she'd written in the sand.

Would love to hear about Check Mate and Drag Me To Hell. 👀 Whichever you feel more like talking about. 😊
Thank you @eowynwise 😘
These are both at the ideas stage so I have a page full of random bullet points for each of them, but not much actual writing.
Check Mate is a modern AU.
Inuyasha is a professional chess player, and Kagome is a retail worker of some description, and they meet at one of those huge moveable chess sets at a park. She goads him into playing with her, and chats the entire time while they're playing. He's both irritated and intrigued by this person that is going out of her way to speak to him. She mentions that she's always wanted to travel and he lists off all the places he's been like a shopping list and she's in awe, and excitedly asks him about different monuments and museums. He scoffs and says 'no, why would I?' and she's aghast. Somehow she convinces him to send her postcards and he has to write to her about at least one beautiful place other than the hotel he stays in or the room where the chess tournament is being held. He sends a series of postcards from all over the world. At first they're short and sarcastic, like 'it's a beach. There was sand and shitty seagulls. Are you happy?' And then gradually he's more descriptive about things, like he's really trying to describe them for her. And they meet for coffee when he's back in her city and eventually they go back to her apartment and she's got every postcard up on the wall pinned to a world map so she can see where he's been. It will probably be a long one-shot. There's two things that still need more research before I write this - one, I don't play chess, so I need to give myself a basic understanding of it first and two, Inu in this has ASD, and I want to be sure that I am respectful and careful with how he's shown, and how he reacts to the world around him.
Drag Me To Hell is a comedy of sorts, modern AU.
Inu and Miroku are undercover cops working on an assault case. Someone is targeting drag queens, and the level of violence is increasing.
They're entered in a major pageant. Kagura is in on it, she's in charge of the competition. Kagome is stage manager, Shippou is special effects technician, Sango is make up, Kouga is security.
They have to be good enough to make it into the finals, because they're thinking that is when the next assault will take place, based on previous attacks.
Miroku charms his way in - he ends up actually realising he likes wearing ladies clothes, not all the time, but at home. He's not sure what to think about this, because he still feels 100% straight.
Inuyasha is not into that at all, but because he's already a good dancer, he really loves doing the routines. And he can't help flirting with Kagome when he's up on stage. And Kagome isn't sure what to make of it, because she's assumed he's gay.
Kagome asking Kagura - is insert Inu drag name gay? Because I don't know, it feels like she's flirting with me. Kagura - oh no, she's a 100% gay queen. Kagome.... damn.
This has been sitting in my wips folder for two years. And my main block to working on it is that I can't decide if they're all human or a mixture of human/youkai. Both would have pros and cons. I'm sure I'll figure it out eventually.

You will surely find one that fits your needs and budget while allowing you to live out your dream nature getaway.
1) Durness Beach Wild Camping
Durness Beach lies beside its namesake village, thus making this sheltered bay a convenient base in this remote wild camping destination. The view opens to the northern Atlantic Ocean, and because of its isolated location, you can expect a quiet and peaceful time there.
Reaching Durness Beach may take up to 7 hours of driving from Edinburgh, so be sure to pack for wild camping well. Motorhomes and caravans aren’t allowed on the shore, but you can park at the nearby campsites and make your way to the beach on foot. It will all be worth your effort because of the stunning scenery and relaxing vibes await you there.
2) Sango Sands Caravan and Camping
If you want to visit Durness and experience the award-winning beaches of Sango Bay, this cliff-top campsite on the NC500 should be at the top of your list. It offers plenty of space for backpackers and hardstanding pitches with electric hook-ups for campervans and motorhomes. You will also have access to facilities, such as toilets, showers, and laundry rooms, to maintain your hygiene and comfort during the trip.
Staying in Sango Sands makes it easier to immerse yourself in the natural beauty of Durness. We particularly enjoyed hiking and cycling in the hills around the village. Popular tourist destinations, including the Smoo Cave and the Old Man of Stoer, are also only a few minutes away from the campsite.
3) Bayview Caravan And Campsite
Situated on the shores of Talmine Bay near the hamlets of Melness, Bayview is an intimate, family-run, and dog-friendly campsite open to travellers from April to September. Pitching your tent or parking your caravan on this campsite will give you spectacular panoramic views of the sea and interesting rock formations that made Durness famous among nature lovers. It’s also perfect for campers who enjoy wildlife watching, fishing, or hiking.
Campers on Bayview can use its toilet block with showers and chemical waste disposal area. Though electric hook-ups for camping vehicles aren’t available yet, you can head to the nearby townships for more amenities while also getting the chance to try the local pubs and restaurants.
4) Kyle Of Tongue Hostel And Campsite
This hostel on the banks of the Kyle of Tongue offers more than just private rooms and shared dormitories. It also has camping pitches and facilities that are adequately maintained by its friendly staff. We truly appreciate the views of the sea loch, mountains, and greeneries afforded to us during our stay. But what made it special for us was its central location to numerous hiking trails, such as the Tongue to Durness trail, Ben Loyal trail, and Kylesku Ridge trail.
The proximity of this wild camping destination to the sea loch ensures that water sports enthusiasts and avid anglers can fill their days with their favourite outdoor activities. We recommend sea kayaking down the Kyle of Tongue and spot the indigenous birds, dolphins, seals, and whales of Durness.
5) Kinlochbervie Loch Clash Motorhome Stopover
Kinlochbervie is more than just a stopover in Sutherland, Scotland. It’s also an amazing place to wild camp for those who want to explore Durness. Though relatively small, it has five serviced pitches facing an open pier. Expect fantastic views of the sea, but make sure to double-check the weather forecast for your trip to stay on the safer side.
Overnight motor campers may also park in Kinlochbervie at an affordable rate. Note that this stopover does not feature a toilet or shower. Fortunately, it is located near Durness, where you can find such facilities and more amenities. Several tourist hotspots in the area are also adjacent to this campsite. Our favourites include the Inverpolly National Nature Reserve, Kylesku Bridge, and the Old Man of Stoer.
6) Shegra Beach Honour Campsite
This beach-side wild camping destination is perfect for backpackers whose itineraries include hiking and coasteering on the northwest corner of Scotland between the months of May and September. It offers five tent pitches only, so you can rest assured that your stay there will be quiet and private.
Using Shegra as a base for visiting Durness is also a practical choice. It only takes a 10-minute drive to reach the village. On your way there, you will be treated to the beautiful sights of the Highlands and the sea. If you prefer trekking or hiking, you can challenge yourself by taking on the different nature trails in the area.
7) Scourie Caravan & Camping Site
As a well-loved NC500 stopover, it’s no surprise that Scourie ranks among our top choices for wild camping in Scotland. It has pitches for traditional tents, caravans, and motorhomes. The latter may also avail of the electric hook-ups offered by this campsite. Other amenities include a laundry room, a children’s play area, and a small shop selling basic camping supplies.
In addition to Durness, Scourie is close to the Handa Island Wildlife Reserve, a tiny island where you can find various animals, such as otters, puffins, and seals. We also encourage travellers to check out the clear waters of Oldshoremore Beach and Sandwood Bay, where you can relax during the day and stargaze at night.

With some planning and preparation, you can determine the best place to pitch your wild camping tent near Durness. Childhood: a Kohrin oneshot
Tumblr media
Summary: Two teenagers sneak off one night to the beach, reflecting on their pasts. Despite the grim subject, Rin somehow always manages to make him smile. Kohaku x Rin oneshot
3,000 words
Childhood
Laughing, racing, tumbling, grinning. Gaped teeth, freckles, dirt between toes, teasing brothers, sunbathing, cool creaks, bare feet and squawking kappas. The scatter of petals and grass kicked into the air, the scent of campfires, sunflowers, crispy fish and cooking fungi. Assuring golden eyes keeping vigilance over her sleep, along with the steady rhythmic breathing of a two-headed dragon keeping her warm. These are all the things Rin chose to remember about childhood.
She remembered and kept them close, especially at night, gliding through memories masquerading as dreams.
In the years after travelling with the stoic lord and staying with Kaede at her village, her limbs had changed- becoming gangly, form lean and growing with burgeoning maturity. She'd adapted to her environment, forming strong friendships with her mentor and the Inutachi. However, despite her days being spent in quiet happiness, she couldn't help but notice a few things. A perpetual absence. A certain searching look in Sango's eyes whenever she glanced up from monitoring her three children to stare off into the trees.
Tossing and turning beneath the covers, Rin frowned in her sleep.
One person who remained elusive in both her dreams and the waking world was-
A crooning noise startled her upright, brown eyes flying wide. Stumbling from her futon and hurrying from Kaede's hut, she peered out into the night inquisitively.
From within the forest, she could see a faint orange glow peeking out between the trees. Tightening her sleeping yukata around her, Rin's lips pursed. She then stubbornly sought out the glow, bare feet padding over cool dirt.
She found him, as predicted, watching Sango's hut.
Kohaku stood, a little further along into his maturity than her. Even the dense shadows couldn't quite hide the changes in his height and features. Rin stopped the second he caught notice of her- a telltale wariness gripping him a moment before recognition painted his face.
"Rin," he said with relief, tone soon slipping into a resigned reprimand. "What're you doing out so late? You should be asleep."
"So should you," she smiled easily, rocking on her heels. She gave a wave to Kirara, who hopped onto Kohaku's shoulder after transforming into a small version of herself and mewling. "It's a strange hour for you to come back. Sango won't be able to greet you with a lively smile-" lively chatter broke off the second she noticed the older boy direct his gaze to his feet. "Oh… unless… you don't plan on staying long?" Rin murmured. Again.
For some reason, it was always the same with him. Lord Sesshoumaru's brief visits didn't bother her in the least. He barely had a connection to the village. But Kohaku? He should've been there, stayed there. She knew Sango missed him terribly but he barely made time to visit.
However, she didn't voice any of this. She'd done so before, and Sango's assurances never seemed to help him. Guilt continued to gnaw like an infected wound at her friend.
Rin observed his freckled face in the torch light, seeing the emotions swimming within vibrant brown eyes.
"You know I would if I could. But…" the silence of the forest swallowed up the remainder of what he wanted to say. Rin shifted her bare feet, drawing closer and taking his coarse, demon-slaying hand.
"Let's go somewhere."
"Huh?"
"I want to go to the beach," she said decisively, as though he had no say in the matter. Kohaku supposed he didn't when she got like this. "Come on, Kaede says the ocean air is good for you. Hurry, before everyone wakes up," Rin tugged on his hand.
Kohaku smiled slightly, giving in far too easily.
---
Kirara touched down on sandy shores an hour later, allowing them to slide off her back. Rin stretched and sucked in a long breath of salty sea air.
"Ahh! Now isn't that better?" she grinned.
Kohaku snorted and smiled good-naturedly, looking out at the black sea with a quiet, observing look. "I haven't been to the beach in a long time."
"Why not?"
Kohaku wandered out, boots crunching on pebbles until they were cushioned by sand, leaving moonlit footprints. "I want to say I haven't had time, but that's not true," he chuckled. "It just hasn't occurred to me to go. That I'd enjoy it."
At 16, Rin still didn't feel old enough nor wise enough to understand everything. She wasn't a firecracker like Kagome had been around her age, and she didn't see herself as a warrior like Sango. However, there were some things Rin knew how to do.
Following, Rin took his hand in passing, tugging to ensure he'd stumble after her. She walked right up to the shoreline, drinking in the dark, hushed atmosphere only broken by the sound of waves crashing against rocks.
"Take off your boots."
Kohaku blinked, raising a brow. His lips quirked, "you sure are bossy today."
Giggling, she wriggled bare toes into the sand- squealing when the cool tide rushed in and splashed about her ankles before drawing back. "You used to walk around barefoot all the time, just like me."
"When I was a kid," he reminded her.
"Are you implying something?" Rin huffed. "I'll tell Uncle Inuyasha you said that."
"No, I wasn't trying to say-" his hasty words cut off, noting her mischievous expression. Kohaku smiled and leaned down as though to take off his boots- suddenly thrusting his hands into the surf and splashing her.
Shrieking and gasping, Rin gaped with surprise- soon grinning viciously wide and leaping towards him. Kohaku quickly dodged. He began running, hotly pursued by the petite young woman. An unexpected noise rang out into the night. Boyish, happy laughter.
Earthy brown eyes widened and even as Rin sprinted, panting, she drank in the sound of Kohaku laughing. How strange, rare and wonderful it was.
Running fast and putting all her energy into her legs, Rin leapt at his back. Catching him around the middle, she collided hard against him.
With an undignified yelp from a demon slayer, Kohaku lost his footing, toppling gracelessly to the ground, kicking up sand. Giggling breathlessly, Rin spat some from her mouth and lifted her head.
"You went down easy. Are you sure you slay demons?" she teased, nestling against the warmth of his back.
Kohaku shifted, shaking sand from his ponytail and adjusting their positions so that they were facing each other, laying on their sides. He wiped his face, expression clearly trying to remain unaffected and firm- but breaking into a tender smile.
"You always do this," he mused quietly.
"Hm? I don't think I've ever tackled you into the sand before," Rin felt fairly confident about that.
"That's not what I mean, it's just that you always make me feel... something different. Something good."
"But we had that argument about how best to stew nettles the other day," she pointed out.
A chuckle escaped him, soulful gaze sober. "Even that felt good to me."
Tilting her head against the dry, soft dune, both fell silent. Despite being a chatter-box, Rin also knew when to be quiet and let him talk. Her hand inched out naturally for his, and Kohaku accepted it, grasping her palm in a way that made her feel secure and safe. They'd known each other for many years so some things came as easy as breathing. Other things, like talking about it, came slowly, painfully.
"Why won't they go away?" Kohaku murmured in a hushed tone for only her to hear. "The nightmares. The memories," his gaze shook. "I just want to stop seeing it every time I look at Sango, but its there, in the back of my mind. I don't... feel right being around my nieces and nephew."
"You're still scared you'll hurt them?" there was no judgment in her tone. Assuring him that Naraku was dead and gone didn't help. Kohaku was perfectly aware of that.
The young man ducked his head, lips thin. His larger, rougher hand in hers trembled. "What if it's still there?" he whispered. "The compulsion to hurt people. I could be living my life- I could marry-" his eyes avoided hers. "Have children, but then one day I hear his voice again and the memory is too strong to resist. I could do something awful."
Dark brows pulled together, heart-squeezing in her ribcage. She wanted to help so badly. However, there was nothing she could do but keep trying to assure him and listen. "Even if you hear him, I believe in you, Kohaku," Rin stroked a thumb over his scarred knuckles. "You'd fight it. You're getting stronger all the time."
He looked exhausted, running a hand through his hair and sighing. "I'm so tired of being scared," he mumbled, glancing wearily at her. "You're still scared too, aren't you?"
Her face lost its girlish innocence, becoming firm as she sat up. "I've told you before- I'm not afraid of you, Kohaku!" she insisted hotly. "I haven't been since I was 8!"
Kohaku shifted his muscular body, and it was times like those she noticed how much larger and different he'd become. She blushed slightly but kept her expression serious.
"I wasn't talking about that," he chuckled, gaze becoming gentle. Careful fingers minded some dark hair from her face. "Your nightmares. You still have nightmares about your childhood too, right?"
Rin blinked, feeling cold and releasing his hand to wrap both arms around herself. The brush of cool night air gliding over her skin suddenly felt a little too chilly.
A soft croon rumbled out seconds before Kirara's large form settled down behind them. Lustrous buttercup coloured fur bumped against Rin's back, and she nestled against the nekomata's side gratefully.
"We don't have to discuss it if you don't want to," Kohaku said with concern, leaning back against the demon as well.
Forcing a cheery smile, Rin shook her head. "I'm fine- I've actually come up with something that helps me sleep most nights now, and I thought it might help you too."
"What is it?"
Tilting her head back to gaze at the stars above, she smiled a little more naturally. "I think of all the good things in my childhood. Assuring golden eyes keeping vigilance over my sleep, along with the steady rhythmic breathing of a two-headed dragon keeping me warm."
Kohaku stared at her with no short amount of amazement. He swallowed and looked down at the sand.
"You're strong," he breathed. "To be able to separate all the good things from the bad."
"You can do it too," grabbing his hand again, Rin inched closer with an encouraging nod. "Tell me some things you remember. Happy things."
Kohaku blushed a little at her proximity and cleared his throat, thinking. "Sango. She was always there for me."
"What else?"
His eyes seemed to haze slightly, "Father…"
"Push through it, Kohaku," she murmured. "There was a time before all the bad stuff. Was he kind?"
Kohaku blinked, firm fingers squeezing hers as he came back to himself, exhaling. He chuckled shyly, "he was a little strict, but he meant well."
Rin shifted closer, resting beside him shoulder to shoulder, knee bumping his. Kohaku rested his head back against Kirara's soft fur and began recounting things long since buried. Things he hadn't thought he could remember or appreciate anymore. The guilt was there, it always would be, but it felt further away, replaced with a bitter-sweet tang.
"Practicing, running, training, laughing, chasing yellow nekomatas," he scratched Kirara's ear. "Butterflies, bare-feet, hunting- freeing rabbits from traps because I didn't want to see them get killed. Father yelling. Father's hand gently resting on my h-head," the words stumbled. "Playing, flower gathering, flying on Kirara. The smell of the blacksmiths. Sweat. Forging weapons. Sango snoring."
Rin gasped and giggled, watching as his fingers slid through the gaps between her own.
"Warming my hands on the brazier. Talking. Listening. Stories around the campfire. Demon slayers, family," Kohaku murmured, voice thick with memories. He closed his eyes, falling silent.
"You did really well," cuddling against him, Rin pecked his cheek.
Kohaku glanced down at her, "I haven't talked about that stuff out loud before. I didn't think I could anymore."
Grinning, she put her nose in the air, imitating Jaken. "Humph well, I am rather good at talking. Getting other people to talk is my speciality ~"
Chuckling, he nudged his free hand against her forehead gently, brown eyes incredibly warm. "Can we do this again sometime? There's probably more we can remember."
Blinking, Rin gentled and squeezed his fingers, "of course we can. Anytime, Kohaku. But you know… Sango might want to hear some of this too- when you're ready," she added quickly.
His face became a touch more guarded, which broke her heart. He was so afraid of hurting Sango again. For a demon slayer, the young man was heavily weighed down by empathy.
Rin touched his freckled cheek, "Kohaku?"
He shook his head slightly and gave a smile to show he was alright. "Never mind that. How'd you get to be so brave talking about this stuff?"
Humming, she let her fingers linger, dragging down to his jaw. It looked and felt strong beneath her touch. "I probably couldn't talk about it out loud if you weren't here. You make me feel brave."
Before her fingers left his face, her hand was caught. Kohaku pushed it back to rest against his cheek, tilting his face into her palm.
"Likewise," he mumbled.
Cheeks warming, Rin felt her heart stutter and thrum wildly in her chest. It was weird. Kohaku was so incredibly dear to her. She loved being close to him, but lately, butterflies just wouldn't stop fluttering in her stomach.
Seeming to sense her confusion, Kohaku released her slack hand and gently returned it to her. He then turned to his boots and began tugging them off.
"What are you doing?"
"I'm doing as you bossily suggested earlier," standing, he gave a small smile, offering a hand down to her.
Rin accepted it, following as he walked to the shoreline. Stepping onto the wet sand, a noise of surprise and shook escaped the demon slayer as the tide rushed in.
Biting her lip, Rin tried and failed to suppress mirthful laughter. "Did you just squeal?"
"No. You're imagining things," Kohaku grinned.
The ocean lapped around their ankles, slowly receding, before sweeping a fresh wave of cool, dark water against their skin.
Kohaku gradually adjusted, looking out at the endless stretch of ocean brightened by the moon. Rin breathed in a lungful of the fresh air, slowly relaxing with him.
The tired lines beneath Kohaku's kind eyes seemed to soften, not entirely going away, but his face appeared young once more, gaining a healthy glow.
Rin held onto his hand throughout. He was the only one she felt so strangely at peace with. Lord Sesshoumaru and Kaede were protective presences, but neither really knew her, or her secrets. No one understood everything that had happened in her life, though she'd divulged some things.
She'd told Kohaku everything. When the boys at the village whispered among themselves that she was strange, a shape-shifter, a hanyou girl in disguise, Rin would smile. Because they didn't need to know or understand. Kohaku accepted her oddness, an outlier himself. Perhaps they were Hanyou children in a way.
Like Uncle Inuyasha, they didn't quite fit into human society. They were too strange. Too changed, different because of what they'd seen and experienced, never quite meshing despite their best efforts to.
But that was alright.
She'd asked Uncle Inuyasha about it once, Lord Sesshoumaru in their presence. Inuyasha had met Sesshoumaru's gaze, voice gruff.
"Well, there was no place for me, so I had to make one for myself, and then I realized, I had a place, but I was the only one in it."
Lord Sesshoumaru had seemed quiet and considering of his words.
Rin understood. Gazing at Kohaku right then, she felt he would too. The two humans who had died too young. Kohaku was part of her space, and she was in his.
Catching her eye, he smiled. Just as naturally as holding hands, he leaned down and rested their foreheads together. Rin let out a whoosh of hot air, lashes fluttering shut. The press of his head against hers felt intimate and sweet.
Slowly, she opened her eyes and shifted her head, lips inches from his, face burning. Kohaku's eyes cracked open wide, before gazing solemnly at her. He wrestled with something- and she thought he might pull away.
Kohaku then snuffed out the rest of the distance between them, lips pressing against hers in a chaste kiss.
White-hot feeling burst within the young woman like shooting stars. Butterflies turned into hummingbirds. Her lips burned.
They pulled away, both avoided each other's gazes a moment, reeling. They then caught one another's eye and slowly, shyly smiled. Because they were still the same, just a little different from before.
"Let's go back to the village," Kohaku murmured, noticing the first hues of sunlight brightening the horizon. "I think… I'll try talking to Sango."
Rin nodded, smiling with palpable relief.
He glanced at her, expression remaining vulnerable, fragile heart laid bare for her to see. Kohaku trusted her to handle it gently.
"And Rin?"
"Yes?"
He blushed slightly, squeezing her hand. "Let's come back to the beach sometime soon."
Rin's face burst into a wide grin, giggling a little breathlessly.
"I'd love to!"

Diary of a Junebug

Jewels of the moon bathed sea
The waters of Cobalt Sands are said to once have been home to the moon gazed souls, mystical spirits born from fallen stars. Most of the archipelago’s residents are descendants of those spirits. Along with the waters, the villages too have a lot of interesting history.
Kati invited me, Shara, and Daisy Jane for a visit to check out the shops. She also introduced us to Justine, a friend of hers who runs a jewelry shop called Glittering Spring. Along with exploring the archipelago, we’ve been collecting gems on the shoreline so we can craft stuff with them.
The inn we’re staying in has a lovely view of the coast and we can see many of the other islands in the distance. To the north are the Pearl Waterfalls, Broken Ribbon Reef, and Lemon Stone Springs. Violet Coal and Bloomrose to the east, the Dandelion Reef in the south, and the city in the west.
There’s also a partially hidden area that used to be some sort of lab which has been abandoned for centuries. Apparently there’s some political issues surrounding the records stored there so while the place isn’t exactly secret anymore, it’s closed off to the public - though that doesn’t stop curious onlookers from trying to steal a glance. What makes the lab a place of interest is the fact that the god who once stood alongside the moon gazed people directed many of the experiments so most of the records were his own personal notes. While the experiments and research itself were not controversial in any shape or form, it’s the circumstances that were going on behind the scenes that pose an issue. Of course, because of the mystery surrounding the whole thing, it’s a hot topic full of speculations.
Glittering Spring is a quaint little shop located at the end of Cobalt’s commercial street. Justine’s been running the business for almost eleven years now. Jewelry making started out as a fun hobby for her that eventually turned into something she could see herself pursuing. Over the years Justine has evolved her craft, not only creating exquisite designs, but also products that are practical, environmentally friendly, and cost effective.
Before that, she was an actress best known as the lead on a teen musical sitcom. I never really got into the show but I’ve seen a handful of episodes and it was an obvious attempt as a vehicle for another teen actress turned pop singer that ended up falling flat. It’s not that Justine was a bad singer - far from it - in her own words, she was mediocre, especially compared to her co-stars. The show only lasted two seasons and by then Justine had completely lost interest.
As much as she enjoyed music, that venture into the pop music scene made her realize it wasn’t the path she wanted to pursue. Her experience on the show as a whole was pretty much the exact opposite of what she wanted out of life. While she was fairly popular back in the day, she never gained the same traction as other young stars, and that became obvious as she got older. After the show was canceled, Justine made a few small appearances here and there before retiring from acting all together to completely focus on Glittering Spring.
Now she enjoys a quiet life in the archipelago, spending her days getting in touch with nature and creating art. Like most of the residents here, Justine is a descendant of the moon gazed - on her mother’s side - so she too has always been drawn to the sea. Early in the mornings Justine goes for a swim and while getting her exercise in, she also collects various sea gems so she can make her products. Cobalt Beach is said to be rich in jewels, most which can only be found in these waters. Sounds like a nice way to start the day!
That’s the main reason why we’re here - to collect sea gems! Around this time of year, pastel crystal starfish are the most abundant so that’s what we’ve been collecting. Other treasures we came across are sango pearls, luminescent ores, radiant azure sapphires, and violet sandstone.
Sango pearls aren’t exactly rare as they can be found in other places in the world, but they are quite uncommon around here. Justine uses those to make earrings and hairpins, both which sell well, though they also tend to sell out quickly. Luminescent ores are what she uses for most of her jewelry along with pastel crystal starfish as they’re the most accessible - it is often said that it’s easier to find high quality luminescent than low quality golden leaf diamonds (a rare and often sought after gem). They indeed look very pretty! As for the other gems, Justine keeps a close inventory of them and frequently rotates her products based on what’s available.
Being out here exploring the islands, it’s easy to get inspired by the scenery. I’ll admit, I’ve been feeling a bit creatively burnt out lately. I think it’s because I spent the past several days making scrunchies a while back to give as gifts - I didn’t mind too much but being a knitting machine puts a lot of strain on your wrists. In all my years of knitting, this is the first time I overdid it. Because my wrist was sore, I was unable to knit or draw or do pretty much anything that involves using my hands a lot for a while. Thankfully rest has helped my wrist - next time I’ll be more mindful so I don’t end up hurting myself again.
A lot of Justine’s designs are inspired by the coral and foliage on the islands. There’s a lot of organic, curving, wavy shapes, fluid like the ocean waves. What sticks out to me about Justine’s art style is her use of soft pastels and muted earthy tones - like the earth and sea.
It’s good to see Shara in better spirits as she’s been having a rough time. She’s still going strong on her journey of healing and as expected, she’ll hit rock bottom (or worse) on some days. Part of that process is coming to terms with a bunch of hard truths and accepting that not everything’s gonna work out for the best.
Just as Shara predicted, certain people in her life objected to what she’s been doing. In her father’s words, seeing a therapist is an insult to her family. According to his logic Shara is either too dumb to have agency over her own life or she’s dangerously manipulative and deceiving so she can’t be trusted. She’s long accepted that there’s no winning with someone like him, but when it comes to certain other people, it’s a lot more complicated.
Let’s just say there’s a reason why a lot of us have trust issues. Nothing like confiding in someone you thought you can turn to, only to have them dismiss your problems and/or make it all about them. Then they complain about you never telling them anything the next time you have something going on. Bonus points if they make you feel worse or irrational, like it your own fault that you have problems. It’s basically telling someone,”hey, I feel upset about something” and they’re like “you’re not allowed to be upset, maybe it’s your own fault if you feel that way” without ever acknowledging the real issues, especially if they are part of the problem.
Shara’s been working on how to stand up for herself more and given how most of her family tends to walk all over her, it’s easier said than done. Out of all her brothers, Shara got along best with Tanner, at least until she started putting her foot down. Honestly, while I have gotten along with him, he does have that “I think I know you better than you know yourself” kind of attitude, which is probably why I don’t hang out with him much. Although he does care about Shara and doesn’t put her down as much compared to the other brothers, he does treat her like a doormat, always expecting her to put him first. It’s no wonder Shara can’t advocate for herself - she never properly learned how.
She had ranted about this on our server when Daisy Jane and I, along with Andrea, Cheyenne, Raiden, and Rocky were online. Basically, Shara and Tanner had been at odds for a while to a point where Shara finally had enough and went off. In a way, she hoped that he’s finally listen to her for once because out of all her brothers, he’s the one she trusted the most. And then he flat out insults her, claiming that she’s been difficult since starting therapy. He had also went as far as to say he doubts people actually like her that much, also claiming that if she keeps seeing “that shrink”, she’ll end up losing whatever little friends she has left.
Her anger at him definitely isn’t misplaced. Tanner has been talking behind her back for a while, even DMing some of us, practically trying to bait us into saying something bad about Shara. By the time he got to me, I already knew what was going on so I told him that I refuse to take part in whatever the hell he’s trying to do and ignored him after that. I haven’t heard from him since but if he tries to approach me again, I’ll have to block him for a while. He claims that he’s trying to show what kind of person Shara really is to “tach her a lesson” but in reality it looks like he’s trying to sabotage her support system by pushing her friends away from her.
How the fuck is that considered doing someone a favor? Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if he pulled the same stunt Dello and Donna’s uncle did with the whole playing victim by manipulating facts to make themselves look better and make the other person come across as irrational. Now that I think about it, they are the kind who tend to throw others under the bus as a scapegoat when it could benefit them.
All of this can’t be easy on her, Shara knew what she signed up for when she decided to face her issues head on and she has no regrets. It’s been a long time coming and I’m happy for her. Despite what she thinks, I consider Shara to be one of the strongest people I’ve ever met. Not because she’s survived the storm, but because she knows and acknowledges her own weaknesses.
Listening to the waves and marveling at the scenery is more than enough to put one in a calm mood. Enjoying a nice hot cup of tea while sitting on top of a cliff overlooking the water - it’s one of those small joys of life that makes the day a little better. There’s a reason why the moon gazed souls strive for simplicity and tranquility.
With the weather warming up and the daylight stretching out, we’ve been able to make the most of our time at the waters. Crystal starfish are so pretty, it’s no wonder why the people call them gifts from the sea. I can just sit down and look at them all day. The sea never ceases to surprise me with its treasures.

Six sentences from my still-untitled MirSan WIP.
Surreptitiously, she crossed over to get a better look, trying to oh-so-casually peer through the window.
Good god, that man was fine.
If Sango was in a poetic mood, not that she’d ever admit it, she would say he looked like the way moonlight glinted off sand at the beach at night — velvety-dark, illicit, tempting. His black hair was pulled back into a short ponytail, except for one dark forelock Sango was itching to push back from his eyes, if only to see their color better. Cheekbones to die for. Sooty black lashes that Sango knew many girls — herself included — paid good money to mimic.

Salty air and a cool ocean breeze. The perfect thing to battle all of the unbearable heat.
"Kagome, come on!"
Turning towards her friends, Kagome's smile was bright as she ran after them.
The sand was hot under her feet, but she ignored it and instead helped Sango put up the tent canopy. Yuka made sure the fitted sheet they'd brought with them was caught on each corner, creating the perfect square to help keep off most of the sand. Eri was setting out their towels and other belongings, and Ayumi set both of their coolers on the sheet. Working together, the five girls had their space set up in just a few minutes, and they couldn't suppress a cheer at their success.
"This is gonna be great! Now we just have to get a picture, and then we can hit water!"
While Yuka and Eri ran off to find someone willing to help them, Kagome dug in her beach bag to find her tripod and camera. With her degree in photography, the girls all agreed to use their phones when they wanted quick pics for social media, but for all the good stuff they used her camera.
It looked like the two girls had found someone, so she hurried to finish setting up the tripod. She wasn't planning on using it a lot today, but it never hurt to have around just in case.
"Guys, we found someone!" Eri called, dragging some poor kid behind her. He couldn't have been more than 14, and judging by the blush on his face, had probably only agreed because he thought Yuka was pretty.
Kagome shared a quick look with Sango, and the two struggled not to laugh. Leave it to Eri to get all the attention.
"Thanks so much, we appreciate it!" Ayumi bounced to her feet, her sunny smile sending the poor boy into a nervous stutter. Deciding to have some sympathy for the kid, Kagome picked up her phone and set it to camera mode before handing it to him. The red head smiled, fiddling with the controls a bit while the five of them got into position.
"Okay, we're ready!" Ayumi's cheer was infectious, and the girls all huddled close, a tangle of limbs, dark hair and excited smiles.
The boy looked a little confused, not sure if they were serious or not, but he'd snapped a few candid shots while they were setting up. If this was how they wanted to stand though... "Are you sure?"
"Yep! Go ahead and snap it!"
Shaking his head but not about to argue, he gave them another moment to settle. "Say beach day!"
"Beach day!"
Their laughter at his silly joke made the picture perfect, and he took a few more candid shots as the girls untangled themselves. More than one managed to fall over in the sand, and he held the phone out to its owner as she came over.
"I took some other pictures of you guys too. I-is that okay?"
"You did?" Curious, Kagome flipped through the photos and laughed. "These are amazing! Thank you so much."
The red head flushed at the praise, preening at the attention. "No problem! If you guys want me to take anymore, my grandma and I are right over there." He pointed out their spot on the beach, waving at the old woman excitedly.
Laughing, Kagome waved hello as well and turned back to the boy. "I'll definitely keep it in mind. What's your name?"
"My name's Shippo!"
"Pleasure to meet you, Shippo. I'm Kagome, and these are my friends Eri, Yuka, Sango, and Ayumi," she told him, pointing to each of her friends as she named them. "We'll be here for a while today, so if you want to come play we'd be happy to have you."
The younger boy couldn't have looked more excited if he tried. "Really? You mean it?"
"Absolutely!"
"That's awesome!" The old woman called his name, dragging Shippo's attention away. "I have to go now, but I'll find you later, okay?"
"We'll be waiting." Kagome waved goodbye as he ran off, and finally looked back to her own friends who were fiddling with her camera. "Hey! Be nice to my equipment!"
"We are, don't worry!" Yuka looked up from over Sango's shoulder. "Sango's the only one whose touched it."
Only mildly reassured, Kagome went to reclaim her camera. Sango had taken the same basic photography classes as her, so she at least knew what she was doing. That wouldn't stop the others from messing with things though.
The athletic woman grinned at her, placing the camera in its spot on the stand. “I got everything set up for you. We said we wanted to try some of those jump shots, right?”
A chorus of ‘yes yes yes’ answered her question, and Kagome shook her head at Sango’s delighted laugh. The things she did for these girls, honestly.
“Fine, get over there while I double check.” The four scurried away, and Kagome took a moment to check the lighting and set the timer. Once the flash started, it would take a series of shots, letting her choose the best of the bunch.
It didn’t take long to get the pictures they wanted, and at Kagome’s word the four of them took off like a shot to the water. Laughing under breath, the photographer searched up and down the shore. This beach was known for its waves, and if she was lucky, she might be able to take some shots of someone trying to surf.
It looked like there were some surfers a ways down, so she made sure to yell out to her friends where she’d be going. The last thing she needed was them scouring the beach for her and potentially screwing up a shot.
That’s not really fair though, Kagome thought to herself, heading towards her goal. I’d be upset with them too if they just up and disappeared without telling me.
Ever since Ayumi’s scare at the club a few months ago, all of them had gotten into the habit of checking in on each other in public. Out here on the beach, where anyone in the distance looked like just another spec of sand, it was doubly important.
Shaking her head loose of those disturbing thoughts, Kagome came to a stop when she reached a nice, unobtrusive distance. She wanted to take a few practice shots to correct the settings on her camera. Then when they came ashore after she’d gotten a few, she’d ask them about using the images in her gallery if they came out well enough.
The glaring sun gave enough light that she didn’t need her flash, but it did make her wish she’d remembered to grab her sun hat. She’d put on some sunscreen as soon as she and the others had gotten out of the car though, so at least there was that. Now she just had to hope she didn’t sweat it all off.
The coming of a larger swell set the small group of surfers cheering, each egging the other on. But it was the one with long black hair who swam forward, so he was who she focused her camera on.
He moved like he was born for it. He had no trouble catching his balance on the board, grin wide as his hand reached out to break a path through the wall of water. He matched the highs and lows of the wave until it broke, and his back smacked the surface of the water when he finally came to a stop.
Kagome winced in sympathy, but she laughed along with the others. She’d heard that smack from here, there was no way it hadn’t hurt. But he’d done it to himself, so it was really his own fault.
The surfer came spluttering up for air, and as the next wave rose, another took his place.
She wasn’t really sure how long she’d sat there for, taking more and more pictures as time went on. So focused on whichever surfer happened to be catching the wave at the time, she didn’t notice the attention the group of men had started giving her. They playfully shoved at each other, attempting to convince one of their own to start a conversation with the bikini clad photographer.
But again, the one to take the lead was the long haired male, swimming to shore and heading in her direction. Kagome flipped through the images on her camera, deleting a few shots that had come out blurrier than intended. She had no idea she was even being approached until a shadow blocked her light.
Looking up in surprise, she felt a bright flush heat her cheeks. Her favorite of the bunch so far, he was a good head taller than she was, dark hair tied in a high pony tail and eyes as blue as the sky behind him. She couldn’t tell if the warm color of his skin was natural, or if so much time in the sun had left him permanently dark.
“So,” even his voice reminded her of the beach, waves lapping at wet sand, “are you gonna introduce yourself, or just keep taking pictures and leave us hanging?”
Blustering, she jumped up to stand, only just catching herself from falling face first in the sand. “I’m sorry, I wasn’t trying to be rude! I was only taking some candid shots on the beach when I saw you and your friends--”
“Whoa, easy,” he laughed, the hand not holding up his board raising defensively. “I’m not complaining, neither are the others. We just didn’t know what exactly you were doing. Well,” was she seeing things, or had he just blushed? “Aside from taking pictures, I mean. You’d been at it for a while, so I thought I’d come see what was up.” He seemed to regain his composure, because he smirked. “My name’s Kouga.”
“Kagome,” she returned easily, feeling playful and at ease even as she eyed him suspiciously. “Do you always let people you don’t know take pictures of you?”
Kouga, as she now knew him, grinned. “As long as they’re as pretty as you, I’ve got no reason to complain.”
Her laugh was bright and surprised. “That has got to be one of the worst pick up lines I’ve ever heard.”
“Stick around for a while, I’ve got plenty more.”
While she snickered, he took the moment to clear his throat. “So, did you want to?”
Not bothering to hide her amused smile, she quirked a brow. “Did I want to what?”
“Stick around for a while.” He tilted his head briefly, using it to point in the direction of his friends who were coming back to the shore. “We’re gonna take a break, have a few beers. You can come sit with us if you want? Show off the pictures you took.”
Looking behind her, Kagome found her group of friends in the far distance. They were still out in the water, and it looked like Shippo had joined in on their fun. He was splashing Sango in the face with water, and she was using the other girls as laughing bodyguards. They looked like they were having fun. She should probably be getting back to them.
But…
Kouga’s eyes, the same color as the sky, flashed in her mind. Something told her this wasn’t an opportunity to let go of.
Turning back to the taller male, she smiled. “Sure. Why not?”
His answering grin outshone the sun.
