My mom was reminiscing in the car with my grandmother the other day about my early childhood and at first I was a little annoyed and embarrassed because that's how teenagers are, and then I actually started listening and some things started to catch my ears.
So for context, I've been talking with my parents for roughly a year (maybe two?) about how I think it's possible that I have some form of undiagnosed neuroatypicality (autism or ADHD or something). I kind of gave up a few months ago and started calling it "brain funk", but this kind of brought it up again.
Anyway, my grandmother was talking about how "silly it was" that at about two I began memorizing the nursery rhyme books and pretend to read them even though it was obvious memorization and how I was "so bright". But something about it didn't sound right, so I kept listening.
Apparently that wasn't it as things progressed and I was also told how my mom forced me to hit milestones months to YEARS earlier than expected because after I started showing preference for my left hand there were worries I'd be "irregular".
Anyway here's the list of things that also got brought up that I just learned about myself:
I started making facial expressions, specifically smiling, for no reason "out of the womb"
I wore sunglasses everywhere I went and had a meltdown whenever I wasn't allowed to wear them until the age of five
Ditto with Hello Kitty earmuffs
I never learned to crawl
I would puke whenever they tried to give me a pacifier or teether because of the texture in my mouth
I potty trained instantly at 3 years old after over a year of struggle
I never had tantrums or outbursts and would just quietly or have non-screaming meltdowns.
I would follow the same script with like 4-5 different situational games and they'd go the same way every time.
I never made strong friends or really understood the concept of what friends mean. I thought just introducing oneself was enough.
I never wanted to look people in the eye unless I was playing a character.
Even though I could talk, I'd talk so fast that it was incoherent (still a problem)
And (BONUS) she doesn't even know I couldn't do basic hygiene tasks like wiping my bum until I was 12 because I was so embarrassed that I didn't tell anyone. And I still can't tie my shoes or brush my teeth properly (because brushing my tongue makes me gag).
So, understandably, I asked. "That sounds like autism, did they not diagnose that?"
and my mom said "oh well, we never thought we had to because you were so smart!"
Like WHAT??? YOU COULD'VE MADE MY LIFE SO MUCH EASIER AND YOU VOLUNTARILY CHOSE NOT TO BECAUSE IT WAS "TOO MUCH OF A HASSLE"??? Now it takes like a million dollars to get diagnosed and symptoms, like big symptoms are actually starting to show as I get older when they previously ignorable since I'm AFAB and symptoms manifested as quiet and constant obedience and good grades.
Oh by the way, as I'm typing this, with like a billion research tabs open, my mom is asking "Are you trying to convince yourself you have autism again? 🙄"
GIRL I AM TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH MYSELF. It's not about "wanting" to be "special" or something. I want to know why I am the way I am and how to make my life easier.
This, anyway, is why I'm trying to get a double major and get a mental health degree. I don't even want to be a therapist. I just want to know how to take care of myself better.

meet accessories: bright purple ear defenders, an AAC tablet, a doll-sized version of the 2021 dc pride comic book, this pink kryptonite chewelry
BOOK 1
(these books would have three authors - me, an author who is muslim and a second generation immigrant, and an author who is a trans woman of color. the reason for three authors is so that we can tell nia's story authentically - i'm autistic and have autism gender like nia, the second author is muslim and an immigrant like nia, and the third author is specifically a trans woman of color like nia.)
in chapter 1 we'll briefly go over this background information:
nia came out to her parents as trans on the car ride home from the last day of first grade. she chose the name "nia" because she wanted to name herself after nia nal, a character on her favorite show (supergirl) because nia nal is trans like she is, nia nal is an alien (and nia mahdi oftentimes feels like an alien around other humans), and nia nal is a really cool superhero! (unspoken: nia nal is nia mahdi's special interest.)
it took nia mahdi's parents a little bit of time to wrap their heads around her truth, but soon, they fully accepted nia for who she is.
that summer, her parents informed nia's school of her correct name, pronouns, and gender. and nia started growing out her hair, and she's never cut it since! nia loves her long hair.
when nia started second grade, nia's classmates sometimes accidentally called her by the wrong name and pronouns, but they always apologized and corrected themselves when nia pointed out their mistake. a few kids were confused, but once nia explained that she knows she's a girl just as well as you know you're a boy/girl, they all understood and accepted her :)
now onto the real content of the first book, which takes place from september to december:
nia's just started sixth grade at a new middle school. it's really loud, big, and hard. but she has a friend, ender. ender doesn't speak english well (he moved to america from turkey just last year), but that's okay because nia has trouble speaking sometimes too.
one day, nia's parents take her to a doctor, and she has to answer a lot of questions and take a lot of tests.
a few weeks later, nia's parents sit her down and tell her that she has been diagnosed with autism.
nia researches autism and feels very relieved and validated. (unspoken: autism becomes one of nia's special interests.)
at school, nia gets some cool accomodations: she's allowed to wear ear defenders at lunch and in the hallways, she can keep a tablet in her backpack to use for AAC when necessary, and she can use the school's sensory break room when necessary.
one time, nia gets very upset after receiving a "bad grade" on a reading test. a few of the questions asked her to identify characters' emotions, motivations, etc., and nia wants to explain to her teacher that her autism makes "emotional reading between the lines" hard for her. but she's so upset that her mouth isn't working properly, so she uses her AAC to talk to the teacher.
after that, one of nia's classmates makes a rude comment about her AAC. speaking through her AAC, nia explains to him why she uses her AAC. she stands up for herself.
in her free time, nia keeps researching autism and disability justice advocacy. she begins to think that her friend ender might be autistic too - he has a lot of autistic traits, and she's never felt alien around him in the way she does around most people.
she tells ender about her theory. ender says he's not sure whether or not he thinks he's autistic. but he does know that the hallways are far too loud, and he would like to be able to wear ear defenders like nia. so nia lends ender her spare pair of ear defenders.
the next day at lunch, ender gives nia back her ear defenders and reveals that he got in trouble for wearing in the hallway. the teacher thought he was wearing headphones and listening to music (which isn't allowed), and ender couldn't remember the english words to explain to her that they were just to shield him from the noise.
nia wants to help ender be able to wear defenders. she schedules a meeting with the guidance counselor. together, she and ender explain to the guidance counselor that ender just wants to wear ear defenders in the loud hallways. the counselor says that ender can't do that since he doesn't have an official accommodations letter.
nia leaves the office very upset. she knows from her research that autism diagnoses are very expensive and hard to get. she wants to find a way to get ender this accommodation without an official letter.
so nia makes a plan: she and ender write a long essay explaining why ender should be allowed to wear ear defenders.
they present the essay to the counselor, and she's convinced by their arguement. ender is now allowed to wear ear defenders in the hallway :)
to celebrate their victory, nia buys ender bright purple ear defenders (the same type she has) so that they can match :)
and that's the end of book 1
BOOK 2
book 2 takes place from january to march
nia goes on puberty blockers. nia's glad that she won't have to go through male puberty, but she also feels weird about it. nia is very excited to start wearing a hijab, and her mom says that she can start wearing a hijab when she goes through puberty and transitions from being a girl to being a woman. so, if nia isn't going through puberty now, when will she get to start wearing a hijab?
nia talks to ender about her problem. ender suggests that she should talk to her mom about it.
nia talks to her mom about her concerns. nia's mom explains that the shift from girl to woman involves more than just her body changing: it involves growth, strength of spirit, and learning about oneself. nia's mom will be able to tell when she's ready to start wearing the hijab, even if nia isn't going through puberty. nia feels a lot better now.
the next day at lunch, nia tells ender the good news. he is very happy for her. he then tells nia that he's scared of puberty too. he asks nia how she knew she was a girl, and nia explains how it was this strong internal feeling. ender reveals that he feels like he's not a boy or a girl. he's afraid that that means he's weird or broken. nia explains that he's not weird or broken - some people are non-binary, which means that they're not fully a boy or fully a girl. ender really likes that word. nia also tells ender that some non-binary like to use the gender-neutral pronouns "they/them" and asks ender if he would like her to start using those pronouns for him. ender says that he's not sure. he likes he/him pronouns, he thinks, at least for now. nia smiles and tells him that she's proud of him.
the spring dance is in march. nia and her mom go shopping for an oufit. at first, nia drifts towards the pretty dresses. she loves how they look and feels great in them, but she wants to try on suits too. she feels a little bit insecure when she realizes that she loves how she looks in the suit too. (plus, this navy suit will go better with her purple ear defenders than the colorful dresses will.) she's scared that her classmates will think she's not a "real girl" if she comes to the dance in a suit, but then she remembers her conversation with ender - when ender asked her how she knew she's a girl, her answer was that it was just something she knew. her gender isn't defined by her clothing preferences - she's just as much of a real girl in this suit as in those dresses. so nia buys the suit, and she feels very happy and confident.
at the dance, she finds that ender is wearing a skirt (and a tuxedo shirt and blazer). she runs up to him, and they both happy stim. they have a lot of fun dancing and snacking on cheez its together.
BOOK 3
book 3 takes place from april to june
the main plot of book 3 is going to be nia's grandmother visiting from iran for three months. nia learns a lot of new information about her family culture.
in june, to celebrate the end of the school year, nia's school has a multi-cultural night.
ender signs up to bring in some traditional turkish food and share some of the poetry his dad has written in turkish. he encourages nia to sign up for multi-cultural night too!
so nia signs up.
together, nia and her grandmother cook a ton of traditional iranian food to share at the celebration. she and her grandmother also work together to sew a special kaftan for nia.
the night of the celebration, nia dresses up in her kaftan and grabs the containers of food. as she's getting ready to leave, her father asks her to stop so he can take a picture of her. her mother says, "wait! i have one other thing for the picture!" (but spoken in faarsi). she emerges with a hijab for nia. she helps nia put on the hijab and tells nia that she's seen how nia's grown into a woman this past school year (aka, over the course of these 3 books). nia is so happy that she cries.
at the multi-cultural night, everyone loves the food and nia's kaftan and hijab. when ender sees nia's hijab, he starts happy stimming, and nia starts happy stimming too.
that's all my plans for goty 2022!

Okay another update on the situation with the psychiatrist situation.
I heard back about a week later, but it was the receptionist again. She said that my appointment hadn't just been cancelled without actually telling me, I'd actually been removed from his patient list, ie I wasn't on the waiting list and needed to go to a doctor again to get another referral. I tried to play it cool but just kinda started to cry because I can't try to get on with my life until this shit gets sorted so I can get some benefit stuff sorted and maybe find a mental health management system that actually works for me. She's really nice so she was asking if I was okay and I was trying to just say I was because I was also about to have a meltdown, but then I managed to explain that I had trouble getting referred in the first place because my go sucks. She literally was like hm I wonder if we have the same gp, and then said she'd send another email to the psychiatrist to see if he could work something out.
I should maybe preface this but by explaining the steps I had to go through to get referred, I spent about 3 years going in and complaining about my mental health, I tried a new medication which did literally nothing, I saw a counsellor who was a terrible fit for me. Then when I stopped that I went in to the doctor and said I don't think I have my full diagnosis and why I think that and that I want a referral for that without saying what I think could be my issues and they said they couldn't. I went in again and asked again to a different doctor, this time saying the things that could be going on in case that made a difference but as soon as I mentioned that I think autism or add could make sense (without speaking in certainties even though I've done a ton of actual research) and they point blank said that even though it was so long ago and I had to convince them to even look at me that my diagnosis is exactly what I was told (doctors don't like when you say another doctor got it wrong even if you speak as cautiously as you can and the doctors were literally on the other side of the world). I went in a third time this time only mentioning the possibility of bpd and they actually referred me through. Then I waited several months (like 4 or 5) and my mum buried my appointment notice under some towels so I missed it, then had to reschedule, then that was set to march 31st and the lockdown happened and I've covered the rest already.
The day after I spoke to the receptionist I got a call from a doctor, this time it was the one I spoke to when I got a medical note because of my mental health when I first went on the benefit and I'd told her back then about my "postponed". She was confused because she received an email from the psychiatrist basically asking if she thought I actually needed seen. I explained to her that it was starting to feel like he just didn't want to help me (because it does), but I also explained how my day to day life/mental health is rn and she was like yeah no that's not acceptable and that I shouldn't really be waiting this long so she re-referred me as urgent. She asked if I'd likecto try some medication or just wait and see what the psychiatrist says, I ran through all of the meds I tried that haven't worked and that I've seen so many counsellors who all tried cbt on me to no avail, and she was like yeah you've run the course and tried all there is.
So now I have to wait, probably 3 months minimum but more likely closer to 6 months to move back through the waiting list. Which means I'll be just starting the process of getting diagnosed for whatever is in my head literally a month or two before I wanted to move out of my toxic parents house so there's that out of the window. It also means I have to push back getting married because I'll be doing that just after we move out since otherwise we can't actually see each other more than every second weekend and my benefit will be reduced. My life literally has to continue to be put on hold because the nhs (especially for mental health services) is hugely underfunded and most GPs are shits who won't listen.
I'm so sick of this, I bet they're just hoping I'll give up and just like go back to work and promptly fucking drop dead.
Still 99% sure I have some sort of neurodivergence and/or bpd and I have serious doubts after how the psychiatrist has been acting so far that they're going to listen to me when I actually explain all of my shit and take me seriously because he just seems like he can't be bothered or doesn't have time. I literally have no choice but to keep pushing though.

There is HOPE! While researching everything I could, I happened to come across the Healing Without Hurting Facebook page. My son, who is 7, was dx with ADHD, ASD, and ODD. We have been on this journey to figure out what was going on with him since he was 4. As he got older, the behavior became worse, the sensory issues became worse (even with OT), we were in behavior therapy, and we finally turned to the gut-wrenching decision to begin medication. That was one of the most difficult days of my life as his Mama. We have seen a slight difference in him since beginning meds, but for our family, this was not the answer. After reading through Jenn's fb page, seeing all of her posts, I finally decided to dig deeper and request additional testing for our son. No easy task...finding a dr who will do this. But I did and so that journey began. As results began coming in, I decided it was time to really move forward with this. I bought Healing Without Hurting...I couldn't put it down! Seriously! The information in this book is worth every penny and more! I have requested even more testing be done because I am convinced that with the correct supplements and proper diet change, my son will be a different child....and med free! One of the results that came back from his tests is that his is sensitive to peanuts and wheat....mind you, we had his allergist test him (scratches on his back) and the result was NEGATIVE for any food allergies! Yet there it was...when the correct tests are done, you will find that there actually are food sensitivities! We also found out he has Celiac Disease! WOAH! Totally not expecting that! BUT...(and hear is the part that is so exciting) - we had a med check up with his psychiatrist yesterday. She said she wanted to add an additional medication to his "cocktail" - I told her about the Celiac....she was shocked - her exact words "Well, that changes everything. We won't be adding a stimulant, just change his diet and I'll see you in 3 months...if we see an improvement (and I think we will) then we will begin to ween him off of his current meds." DID YOU HEAR THAT?!?! My son - ADHD, ASD, and ODD...may be getting weened off his meds in 3 months!!!!! PLEASE GET THIS BOOK!! PLEASE FIND A DR WHO WILL LISTEN TO YOU! I cannot thank Jenn enough for her information on her fb page and this book that she has put so much time and effort into! It has been life changing! Our family has hope again! Our boy WILL be well again! THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU!!!! Go to Amazon
A Handbook for Living Safely in a Toxic World Have you ever been treated by a doctor like your child is just a number? Have you been told "that's just the way it is?" and know that you and your child deserve better treatment? This book will treat you the way you know you should be treated. Life is a series of decisions and outcomes - as every parent knows. Parents of kids with autism are keenly aware of this, because decision-making is one of the toughest challenges. Decisions are best made by well-informed adults, and Jennifer Guistra-Kozek's profoundly informative book, "Healing Without Hurting" can turn you into an expert parent. Half of good decision-making is knowing what the options are, and Guistra-Kozek has laid out the options for most of the decisions a parent of an autistic child must make with respect to addressing the symptoms of autism. We do not yet have clinical trials of the myriad possible combinations of "treatments" for autism, but Guistra-Kozek provides the next best thing: detailed, expert review of what the natural options are. Since the number of toxins that likely contribute to autism risk are large and diverse, one would think that a book with the title "Healing Without Hurting" would be restricted to general guidelines and advice. This book is so rich with science-backed insight, it will give you a master's degree level understanding of the WHYs of the strategies, based on facts. It is so comprehesive in scope and so practical that it seems like a handbook for living in a toxic world. Pediatricians should hand parents of newly diagnosed with autism this book, until the medical community gets to business of working out how to prevent autism either cleaner vaccines, biomarkers to keep those at risk out of harm's way, or treatment that mitigate the uptake of toxins into the brain. I cannot emphasize how much all parents of kids with autism will love this book! Request one for your local library, and buy one for your pediatrician! Go to Amazon
It was beautifully written and very informative I've read countless books on ADHD and SPD, and this was the first that I could not put down!! It was beautifully written and very informative. This story of hope helped me start a list of all the tests and options to help our son. I work in educational advocacy and have been recommending this book like crazy. Excellent resource, get out your highlighters!! Go to Amazon
this is one of the finest books I have read among an estimated 150 books ... As a pediatrician newly board certified in Integrative Pediatrics after 31 years in traditional pediatric practice and 11 years in academic medicine, this is one of the finest books I have read among an estimated 150 books I have read since discovering Functional Medicine just 5 years or so ago. The author kindly gave me a copy of the book at a recent meeting, and I just got around to reading it. I can hardly put it down. As a co-author myself of a book on ADD (The Diseasing of America's Children), I am in awe at the quality of the material and the writing in this book. The author combines telling a "story" while at the same time offering a remarkably broad, concise look at the foundational precepts now known to contribute to the epidemics of ASD, ADD/ADHD, and related clinical syndromes. Furthermore, references to high quality sources and links to valuable online resources are provided the reader. This is my belated "thank you" to Jennifer Kozek for giving me this book at Autism One in Chicago in May. Parents of children affected by chronic "mental health", behavioral, and unexplained medical problems will find this to be an extraordinarily valuable work.. Go to Amazon
This book will change your life! Great Resource for Alternative Treatment Options Treating ADHD Naturally is Possible! This book changed both my son's and daughter's life! Sai, I just went and watched Yugioh Everything's video on Yusaku and Aoi having Autism and Depresson, respectively. While he makes some solids points and I agree with them having mental problems, he basically said Vrains is the first yugioh to talk about 'such dark topics.' If your up to it could you bring up some characters in previous ygo series (Arc-V or all your choice) that implied to have mental problems cause Vrains is not the first by a long shot lmao.
Lmao sorry this answer is kinda late since the past few days have been busy for me and ironically enough you sent this right when I just got back from a grad school info session (regarding psych programs ofc) which made me realize I kinda wanna pursue a career more along research in the field of abnormal psychology which is one of my stronger areas of knowledge in psychology already anyway. I just really like it that much.
So yeah I did see this ask like almost right when you sent it but it was late and I had just gotten home after a nice day and YE’s videos haven’t been making me too happy lately so ofc sorry I kinda avoided watching it that night cuz I didn’t wanna ruin my nice day (just in case). But now that I watched it, well as far as I can remember he didn’t outright say that this is the first time a Yugioh’s dealt with these issues before (but I can see how you got that he perhaps implied it).
That all being said, I still have just a, I’d say, general yet above-average knowledge in these subjects (hey I have a degree in Psych, yes, but that doesn’t make me an expert by any means and I’m not afraid to say that, hell I love learning new things about psych all the time) so please keep that in mind (also please keep in mind too that I cannot professionally diagnose anyone, but for the sake of discussion about the psychology in fiction, I can definitely give my thoughts on what would be the most probably diagnosis for certain characters). Besides that though, if YE does actually believe that this is the first time these kinds of issues have ever been dealt with in Yugioh, well wow idk how much he’s been paying attention before this...
(Long read with further examples + explanations from characters in each series under the cut)
Regarding his statements on the Vrains characters and the disorders he mentioned, I’ll give it to him. In fact, I too am pretty sure by now that all of Yusaku’s “quirks” point to Autism, though, and YE didn’t mention this so idk how knowledgeable he is regarding other personality disorders, he also seems to show symptoms of OCPD (obsessive-compulsive); these include being obsessed or preoccupied with making lists and keeping track of small details, over preoccupation with work or meeting goals to the point of neglecting your social life or forming close relations, unwillingness to see ethics or values in someone else’ light, being stubborn, etc. Wouldn’t surprise me if he has both since there’s a high co-morbidity between ASD and OCPD.
In regards to Aoi, again yes I agree. Girl has depression. It’s very obvious (this I can say with confidence as someone who has suffered previously from it [note: I sought help and let’s just say I’m very glad I did]. The Paranoid Personality Disorder... (I’m gonna be honest.... I didn’t pay enough attention to Aoi’s character enough to determine a firmer answer and I don’t really feel like rewatching the ep). According to him, it’s a possible thing. He did mention that she could just be acting that way because her whole entire life she’s been kinda used so she has a general distrust of people, but that’s just the thing. If in fact he’s correct about her symptoms matching up, it doesn’t necessarily matter if she’s acting this way due to her childhood trauma, in fact, that’s even more reason to validate her suffering from PPD (another area I feel more confident about in psych is child/adolescent development and hey guess what, lots of personality disorder symptoms start showing up during childhood or are even a direct cause of childhood trauma).
Speaking of childhood trauma, you wanted to know characters from other series that have mental illnesses/suffer from personality disorders? Well... (*cough cough* as a psychologist, why do you think I enjoyed Arc V so much?)...Here’s a quick list of just a few select characters I can think of:Arc V:-Yuya (remember, the childhood trauma I mentioned): Oh my poor boy suffers from dysthymia. Again, I’m pretty confident here because I can relate (because I suffer from it too ahaha). While we don’t know exactly for how long, it’s been at least three years with it (ugh) since his father’s disappearance and all the bullying. He shows so many signs of it throughout the show (it would be pointless to get screencaps because the signs are literally everywhere): dysthymia (sometimes called “persistent depressive disorder”) is noted by sadness, anger, irritability, mood swings, loss of appetite, insomnia (did you notice in Synchro when we was feeling depressed in his room he didn’t eat at all and stayed up all night despite being noticeably tired), indecisiveness, low self-esteem, among others. I’m sure people might argue against me, trying to say “oh well he’s energetic for the most part and still smiles a lot” well guess what, there’s lots of entertainers, comedians, performers, and just overall really sociable people who do a terrifyingly good job hiding it.I saw someone once mention that they headcanoned Yuya also has Histrionic Personality Disorder and well... he actually does show signs of it but not so much that he actually meets criteria. Even for being an entertainer tho, he shows this more than the others (either Dennis, Yuzu, or even Yusho), but again, can’t be diagnosed with it.Lastly, and this is more of a post-canon thought regarding the prognosis of his mental health... he’s definitely gonna deal with some dissociative symptoms for the rest of his life (or until somehow, some way they find a way to separate him and the other Yuus, and even then still...). There is just no way in hell you can convince me that he’s not gonna experience dissociation on a regular basis with 3 other people living inside him. Same goes for Yuzu. (Side note: RIP my heart.)
-Shun: He suffers from PTSD. Oh man he’s kind of textbook PTSD: irritableness, mistrust, social issolation, flashbacks, hostility, fear, anxiety, paranoia, agitation, hyper-vigilance, etc. (I’d also say Yuto and Kaito suffer this too).
-Reria: Also suffers from PTSD, but since Reira is much younger, coping with childhood PTSD is a lot harder and leads to more frequent panic attacks, flashbacks, intrusive or unwanted thoughts, nightmares, avoidant behavior, etc.
-Yuri: Conduct Disorder, aka the precursor to Antisocial Personality Disorder. He’s 14 so he can’t really be diagnosed as the second. Anyways, what really tipped me off about him having this is his blatant disregard for any remorse towards harming others. He just doesn’t feel it. On the contrary, he straight up says he enjoys it, says he needs it “just like breathing”, he’s an overall really violent kid and starts fights with literally anyone that gets in his way (like... it’s even his catchphrase “You’re in my way!”), has no knows long term close relationships with anyone (reeaaally wish they had given us more of him and Dennis together tho...), and he’s known to deceive, trick, or lie to others with no guilt at all. (He’s also seen as similar to past villains of Yugioh, outright disproving the implication that Vrains is the first Yugioh to deal with personality or mental disorder issues).
-Zarc: Narcissistic Personality Disorder. Again, another textbook example. And yes, similar to Aoi’s possible Paranoid Personality Disorder, this is canonically induced into his personality as a result of the society he lived in praising his violent duel style and eventual lust for power due in part to the same reason. But just because it was induced due to circumstance doesn’t make it any less valid. It’s another form of trauma, just like Aoi’s whole “being used all her life” led her to develop PDD.
And well there’s more examples in Arc V (you can also argue that Shingo also suffers from NPD to some extent, etc.) but I think those are the biggest ones I can think of right now.
And of course, though I’ve seen them all, I know Arc V the best + it’s just the one that’s in my most recent memory so it’s easier to talk about them, but some other quick examples from the series that I can think of:
DM:-Kaiba: Again, Narcissistic Personality Disorder.-Marik: I think he’s a strong candidate for being diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder (at least the way his villainous arc portrayed him as).-Bakura: Actually an adult so actual Antisocial Personality Disorder.
GX:-Judai: Depression & Dissociation. Yep.-Ryo Marufuji/Hell Kaiser: Definitely could argue that he displays signs of Sadisitic Personality Disorder, just keep in mind that it is no longer included in the DSM-V so it is not something someone would be typically diagnosed with professionally.-Manjoume: Another Narcissist.
5D’s:-Jack Atlas: Okay so he’s more of an accurate example of Histrionic Personality Disorder, minus the sexual criteria (which, if the Yugioh anime genre/audience allowed, I’m sure would be plausible since he also displays signs of NPD, implying that he might actually want that kind of physical/superficial attention).-Aki: Also like Aoi, displayed symptoms of PPD, though I’d argue she definitely has it and just learns to cope over time after befriending Yusei & co.-Sherry: Shows signs of high functioning ASD (being perfectionist and being obsessed with finding out about her parents murder), but ASD isn’t something I’m too confident talking about yet so maybe don’t quote me on this.-Divine: I’d say you can argue he’s has Antisocial Personality Disorder.
Zexal:-Vector: Another one with.... I mean... he’s not really 13 or 14, he’s actually, what, like 100s of years old? So instead of Conduct Disorder, he actually has Antisocial... technically...-Fuya: OOOOOHHHH You thought I wouldn’t remember a character like him??? (Again, as a psychologist, these are the characters I like the most). He’s memorable to me, despite being a minor character, cuz I’d say he definitely displays signs of having Avoidant Personality Disorder, especially with regards to using his Esper Robin personality to avoid all those intrusive, self-conscious thoughts he doesn’t find pleasant.-Shark/Ryoga/Nasch: Also has PTSD.-IV: He’s borderline Antisocial. Not quite. But almost there.
OOOKAYY Well anyways, those were just a bunch of examples. There’s way more, I’m sure that I missed A TON. But yes it’s as you said, Vrains is definitely NOT the first time in Yugioh history where characters have had to struggle with mental health / personality disorder issues. Far from it.
And wow actually thank you for the ask! This was really fun to think about and I welcome the discussion any time! Anyone, don’t be afraid to let me know if there’s stuff I might have left out or if there’s anything wrong with this or any arguments for or against any of this.

Right you're going to regret unleashing my prompting because I have 31 OF THEM (I'm really very sorry) a whole bunch are cliched but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ , as you said. Please tell me to fuck off 1. Meeting the cast, take 2. Does he meet them individually or all together? 2. Alex is being bullied at school. Does he fight back or not? Does he tell Lin and V or try to hide it? 3. Alex struggles to make friends because of his attachment issues. 4. Alex does make friends but worries about telling them who his foster family are. (alternatively he tries to hide the fact that he’s a foster kid at all) 5. Maybe it takes a while for them to find the right therapist? 6. Alex actually IS embarrassed by Lin. 7. Alex struggles to gain weight. 8. Legal drama arises with a past foster parent. Maybe they’re brought up on charges for the sexual abuse? 9. Family vacation. Would a beach bring up bad memories? Would Alex hate flying or be totally glued to the window the entire way over? 10. Alex struggles with casual money use because he’s used to having to scrimp and save. 11. Meeting the grandparents 12. Meeting the cousins/aunts and uncles 13. The press learns the Mirandas have a foster kid. 14. Lin starts getting asked about Alex in interviews and SHUTS THAT SHIT DOWN 15. Discussion of the London move (maybe Alex thinks they’re going to leave him behind?) (not sure how foster system works but would they have to jump through lots of legal hoops to be able to take him with them? (Vanessa and her lawyer knowledge) 16. Alex comes to a performance and gets totally star-struck by a VIP (alternatively Lin is totally star-struck by a VIP but has to play it cool because his kid is there) 17. Animal-assisted-therapy (apparently helps a great deal with survivors of sexual assault?) 18. WHITE HOUSE VISIT. 19. Parent-teacher meetings (do you have to do that for the age group you teach lol?) 20. Tony awards/Grammy awards etc. Does Lin mention Alex in his raps/sonnets/teary speeches? If not why? 21. Alex gets twitter or something and posts something he shouldn’t (pic of Seb/script page/private comment) cue angry Lin. 22. Alex has to get an MRI when he gets a proper prescription for his migraine meds. 23. Vanessa and Lin deciding they want to foster 24. Obligatory first meeting with Alex fic 25. Alex learning to trust the Mirandas with regards to touch (maybe like a 5+1 type thing?) 26. Lin introduces Alex to some of his favourite music/movies/books/shows and Alex HATING it. 27. Alex opens up to Lin and V about his past abuse. 28. Taking Tobi for a walk 29. Various occasions- birthdays/holidays and the like 30. Alex starts to gain some independence (getting to school on his own and the like) 31. Awkward Safe Sex talk
all-the-worlds-a-fandom
Prompt responses. Not any stories yet, just bouncing ideas around. I know that I work best when I can discuss my ideas first. Once a lifetime ago (okay, not really but being a teenager feels that way) I wrote a 22 chapter fanfic novel with 2 other authors. The experience was incredible. Pretty much everything I know about writing was learned from that collaboration. Basically, it consisted of writing a small piece, sharing it with the other two and then spending hours discussing it and what comes next via the comment section with these two strangers. Looking back, I can’t even say it was my best work, but it was creativity at its finest.
2. He would hide it. Alex would so hide it! I think how he’d react would be a bizarre contrast between little Alex putting his head down just taking it and overreacting/ lashing out big time. I’m picturing the inside out characters fear and anger (still haven’t seen it) fighting over lead control on this one. I imagine this would just egg the bullies on since not knowing which reaction they were going to get this time would add to the fun of it. I’m not picturing physical bullying, just a constant wave of low level taunts and harassment.
3. Yes! One thing I don’t want to do is go the route, that like everyone has done, where Alex quickly has a close group of friends (Laurens, Mulligan, Lafayette, Schuyler sisters). It’s adorable, but already well explored. I am much more interested in the idea of Alex being very isolated and alone in the world. Like I could see one of the reasons Alex and Lin are so close is because Lin is Alex’s only friend.
I’m very charmed by the idea of Alex becoming friends with Chris Jackson’s son whose a few years younger than Alex and has autism. Lin and Chris are best friends so it makes sense their families would spend a lot of time together. I can picture the two boys hiding in the corner together at a cast party, both overwhelmed by all the people and noise for different reasons. I can see it taking Lin a while to acknowledge that with all of Alex’s combined issues, he’s also a special needs father like Chris, but once he does becoming even closer to his friend from having this is common. Maybe there’s a moment at the party watching the two of them together and coming to this realization. (note though that I would only ever write about their interactions observed from a distance, or mentioned in passing, since writing fanfic about a real life child is so crossing the line) I can also see Lin just aching for Alex to have a friend.
4,6,13,14. It will take him awhile but once he starts forming the beginning seeds of friendship this would be a big issue that derails his attempts. Especially with Lin’s overnight celebrity status that comes from Hamilton. Since Alex coming to them when the show is still in development I can see this becoming a major plotline. Lin starts getting recognized on the streets of NYC all the time when he’s out with Alex and it freaks him out. It becomes a thing that Alex is constantly ducking out of the way for selfies, but people also start taking creepy photos of them from a distance and posting it to the internet. Questions start to arise about who this teen is that looks just like LMM. When asked by fans Lin dismissively says he’s a relative, so initially the thought is that Alex is his nephew, but as Alex starts popping up more and it comes out that he’s living with him the circulating rumor is that Alex might be Lin’s bastard child from a prior relationship (since they look so much alike) and that Lin might have knocked up a gf in college that he recently got custody of.  People become extra curious because Lin is always tweeting about his life and sharing photos, but Alex is never directly mentioned which seems suspicious. Lin’s super protective and does not want to let on that Alex is a fosterkid. Any press questions about Alex and the interview would be shut down. He knows the press would have a field day with that story, but at the same time the various circulating rumors start to become very harmful. I also know that in the state of New York it is perfectly legal for paparazzi to take photos of celebrity kids (while it’s illegal in California) which starts to become a problem for Alex. Just to add to the mess, social services starts to question if the Miranda’s are a suitable placement given all of this. Oh boy…
5. Honestly because he’s Hamilton I don’t think he’s ever going to fully open up to a therapist. No matter what they do or which new person they try Alex just keeps on glaring and refusing to talk. Eventually they all realize that it’s currently a waste of time, but since social services is requiring it they keep bringing Alex to his weekly sessions. Maybe after a couple years of this Alex will finally break?
7. Conversation coming back from doctor’s appointment weigh in:
“I’m sorry. I’m so sorry. I know that wasn’t nearly enough. I really am trying, I swear. I’ll do better though, promise. I’ll make you proud next time.” Alex is bordering on hysterical, crushed by the look of disappointment on Lin’s face when he saw the numbers on the scale. He hates letting him down.
“Alexander I’m not mad at you, kid.”
“You’re not?”
“No! All this means is we’re stopping for a big serving of ice cream on our way home.”
9. Maybe on a family trip to Puerto Rico? Yeah, I don’t think Alex would do well with the beach, especially in an environment so close to Nevis. I can just see him standing frozen right on the edge of where the ground meets the sand, refusing to take a step further. The whole family is dressed and ready for a fun day on the beach and Alex won’t move. Lin and Vanessa are baffled since the exact details of what happened to him with the hurricane are fuzzy in his report. Alex and the ocean have some major trust issues to work out. If the ocean was a character like in Moana they would need couples counseling. If they stayed in a beachfront resort they’d end up having to switch to a room that *wasn’t* ocean view.
15. This has been in the back of my mind for a while now. I’ve gone as far as to research it a bit and prior court permission is required before even taking a foster kid out of state. Out of the country trips are allowed, but requires a lot of advance planning and paperwork, and an extended time would not be well tolerated. They would probably have to fast track an adoption or legal guardianship (a step between fostering and adoption, I have a friends Mom whose done this with a child of distant Native American decent who could not legally be adopted outside of their tribe) to make it happen. But Alex might not be legally free to be adopted because it can’t be proven that Alex’s dad might not come back into the picture later. Meanwhile they are trying to keep all these legal proceedings a secret from Alex so he doesn’t stress over it, but then Alex reads online that Lin has been cast in Mary Poppins before they get a chance to talk to him about it, and becomes convinced he’s getting left behind. He would probably sit on this for a good week or so before saying anything. Later when it’s looking like it’s not going to go through Lin is ready to turn down the role and Alex feels horrible. This is angst extreme!
18. I just love the image of Alex tagging along shyly behind Lin at the white house. But it’s sure going to take a lot of convincing to get him to come…
19. Yes, I do! I’ve given some thought into the process of Alex needing to be placed on a special plan (like a 504 plan for his panic attacks and migraines since they are affecting his ability to function at school). This is the definition of writing what I know! It can be a tough process and I can see Alex (and initially Lin) being resistant to having any kind of association with special education.
Written weeks ago:
Alex’s mid-term report card leaves him dumbfounded. It’s not even the letter grades themselves, averaging C’s with a splattering of B’s and Ds). It’s the comments that shock him:
“Multiple missing assignments, falling behind, risk of failing, does not complete assignments, frequently misses class, clearly very bright, not living up to potential, work completed brilliant, lazy.”
This is not his Alex. Alex who Lin constantly finds knee deep in schoolwork. Alex who stays up far later than he should reading. Alex who frequently needs to be forced to take a break from his writing. Did they get him mixed up with another Alexander Hamilton?
Some digging reveals that Alex often skips class when feeling especially anxious or having a panic attack or avoiding other students. He hides in the bathroom. He also gets lots of milder headaches which makes it hard to get class assignments done. Also, Alex flat out refuses to participate in group projects.
After talking to all of the teachers a theme emerges: all homework, extended individual assignments and tests Alex excels in. He’s doing horribly in participation points, groups projects and in class assignments. How well he’s doing is proportional to how much weight these items carry in class. Classes where tests and essays make up the bulk of the grade Alex is doing well in. Classes where the opposite is true Alex is bombing.
20. “Sebastian and Alex, Daddy’s bringing you home a Grammy.” That’s all I’ve got so far, and it might be changed, but it’s cute. I think it’s a given that Alex refuses to come to any of the award ceremonies, despite multiple offers.
22 I’ve been throwing this idea around as well (it’s already been eluded to in the stories). When I was Alex’s age I had, like, all of the brain related tests done. I thought the MRI was super cool, but I can see anyone with claustrophobia or trust issues (a cage like thing is placed over your head to keep it still and the machines quite loud) freaking out. EEGs sucked! I had to stay awake for 24 hours with no caffeine beforehand and then they torture you with flashing lights and weird breathing and such. Then my teenage self got all hysterical about all the glue in my hair because I was so exhausted my emotions were all out of whack. I’m already feeling bad for Alex (and Lin) thinking about how I’m going to use this memory to torture him.
24. Since our first discussion I have come up w/ a few ideas that haven’t been done before, but I’m keeping those to myself for now. We’ll see what happens.
New problem: what do I tackle first?

A Pharma Insider’s Rant: Think for Yourself…It’s Not a Crime, Yet!
The debate is heating up about how badly we have been deceived regarding vaccines and other pharmaceuticals such as antidepressants, benzodiazepines, statin drugs, opiod painkillers and chemotherapy. Every day I see more articles and videos scrambling to explain away the inconvenient truths that are slowly seeping into mainstream consciousness.
One recent AARP article declared that Baby Boomers are defying medical directives and refusing to get their shots and take their medication, further lamenting that the cost to society via the healthcare system will be astronomical. Oh my! Will anarchy ensue because Grandma won’t swallow her bitter pills? Or, could the real concern of the medical mafia be that the Baby Boomer generation is the last to critically think for themselves, and not wince at the thought of questioning authority?
The logic and numbers don’t add up, people. The data doesn’t support the advertising. The dead bodies of friends, family and acquaintances keep piling up! Are we the only ones who regularly take notice, or use our experiential knowledge to question what’s happening with deductive reasoning? It will be the “walking wounded” that bankrupt the country–the hundreds of thousands disabled by drugs and addiction–who will crash the system, NOT the defiant, unvaccinated Baby Boomers!
Authority figures cajole us into submission. News pundits shame us into silence. Online trolls harass and annoy us. Neighbors imply we are “crazy conspiracy theorists.” But the truth is, WE ARE ON TO SOMETHING. We have lived long enough now to know that things didn’t use to be this way; especially those of us who have a history in health care.
We still remember when flu shots weren’t recommended for pregnant women and children because of the associated risks. In fact, they were discouraged! We grew up when parents were instructed that part of developing a healthy immune system meant being exposed to childhood illnesses, such a measles, chicken pox and seasonal flu strains. We only got 3 vaccinations as children–not 79!
We remember the direct-to-consumer advertising of cigarettes and alcohol on TV, endorsed by doctors, just like drugs are today. And, we have witnessed the fall out from lifetimes of cigarette smoking and heavy drinking ever since. We were there in the early 70’s when the War on Drugs was launched to teach us the evils of marijuana use. But we have yet to bury even one of our friends or icons, who has died directly from using pot. We cannot say the same for prescription drugs!
Two recently released, CDC-sponsored studies found evidence that vaccinated children have more health problems than unvaccinated children. Moreover, among unvaccinated premature infants, no link to neurodevelopmental disorders (NDD) was found. However, a significant link between vaccinations and NDD was detected, regardless of whether the child was premature or full-term. Also, the combination of preterm birth with vaccination was associated with a 660 percent increased odds of NDD, suggesting a synergistic effect. But in the same breath of reporting this news, some medical correspondent cow tow’s to Pharma’s meme stating, “there is no causal effect”. Are you kidding me? How can anyone dismiss this data, even if there is only a minute chance that it has potentially uncovered something important? I assume they weren’t concerned either when the CDC whistleblower, Dr. William Thompson, admitted that researchers had omitted data from publication suggesting that African American males given the MMR vaccine before 36 months, were at an increased risk of developing autism. No causal effect…How smug!
Then, there are the psychiatric drugging statistics. I won’t even mention the numbers in the general population. Let’s just talk about kids. Over one million children in the U.S., under the age of six, are on mind-altering psychiatric drugs. Incredibly, over 250,000 of these kids aren’t even one year old. The most popular psych meds are anti-anxiety agents such as Xanax, Valium and Ativan. Over 227,100 babies, and nearly 248,00 toddlers aged 4-5, take these toxic, addictive anxiolytics. If you are not outraged, then you aren’t paying attention! Psychiatric drugs are linked to suicide, mania, psychosis, homicidal ideation, heart attacks, strokes, diabetes and sudden death. Still, the numbers keep rising year-to-year of both users and victims.
The number one cause of accidental death, in the U.S., is now overdose. Opiod addiction is at an all time high. There is even a re-surgence of heroin use, more problematic than at any point in history. Why? Because people who get addicted to prescription painkillers are left to find new sources and cheaper products, when their “white coat dealers” stop supplying their needs.
If I sound jaded and perturbed, you’re damn right I am. In fact, I’m feeling quite “compissionate” (compassionate and pissed off) today that parents aren’t making it their priority to protect their children from these profiteering corporations! I should be preparing to retire and spend my days putzing around in the garden and walking my dogs. I shouldn’t have to spend countless hours on social media and email trying to support thousands of people with shattered lives, who have bought into this blatant deception. I shouldn’t have to traverse the globe to address audiences via media, in the hope that someone who needs the information will hear me on TV or radio. I shouldn’t have to try to convince people they have been lied to, only to be attacked by intellectual zombies, who literally regurgitate paid programming, rather than facts uncovered by their own due diligence!
I can clearly see the writing on the wall. This is all coming to a head soon. Talk of mandatory vaccinations, in both adults and children, is on the table. Technology that tracks prescription drug use, in the body, will be used to determine patient compliance. Will you be the voice in the wilderness that calls out to reason? Or, will you be one of the minions of deceit, afraid to rock the boat and make waves that might contradict your superior’s narrative? Either way, you will not be watching from the sidelines for long. If you don’t speak up and educate yourself, and as many other people as you possibly can, soon you will lose the ability to make any healthcare choices at all! Remember, it isn’t a crime to think for yourself, at least, not yet.
