'Olga was the precursor of the Christian land, even as the day-spring precedes the sun and as the dawn precedes the day. For she shone like the moon by night, and she was radiant among the infidels like a pearl in the mire, since the people were soiled, and not yet purified of their sin by holy baptism. But she herself was cleansed by this sacred purification .... She was the first from Rus' to enter the kingdom of God, and the sons of Rus' thus praise her as their leader, for since her death she has interceded with God in their behalf.'

St. Olga
Tumblr media
I know this won’t get too many notes as my other sketches because those tend to go towards my Baldur’s Gate fanart lol, but I really loved making this sketch and I hope to do more like it. I drew this for a friend who’s very fond of St. Olga; I’m pretty proud of how it turned out
My friend likes St. Olga because she, apparently, burnt down an entire town by lighting birds on fire. The birds, by proxy, burnt down the entire town. And I think that’s so slay.

Saint Olga by Nicholas Roerich - 1915
Olga (c. 890–925 – 969) was a regent of Kievan Rus' for her son Sviatoslav from 945 until 960. Following her baptism, Olga took the name Elenа. She is known for her subjugation of the Drevlians, a tribe that had killed her husband Igor of Kiev. Even though it was her grandson Vladimir who converted the entire nation to Christianity, because of her efforts to spread Christianity through Rus', Olga is venerated as a saint in the Eastern Orthodox Church with the epithet "Equal to the Apostles". Her feast day is 11 July.

TW// R*pe
I think a great difference between my experience with Protestantism and Orthodoxy is revealed when I speak to my pastor/priest about my r*pe.
I was r*ped while a part of the Protestant church, I was 17 and went to my youth pastor as early as a week after it happened. I shared with him what had happened and how much I wanted to kill him, I shared how much I hated myself, my body and my life and that man for the way he has destroyed me.
He had assured me it wasn't my fault, that what was done to me was wrong, but that killing him would be sinful. I need to forgive him.
Its been almost 3 years since I was r*ped, I turn 20 next March. Now that I'm in the Eastern Orthodox church, I still deal with the immense trauma and PTSD of the r*pe and my relationship with the r*pist and men as a whole. I now go to my priest, I share with him what had happened and how much I want to kill him, I share how much I hate myself, my body and my life and that man for the way he has destroyed me.
He assures me it was and still is not my fault, that what was done to me was and is a great demonic evil. That Satan hates women and children, so the oppression of women and children is nothing less than demonic. I was a female child. A girl. I am beautifully and wonderfully made. I am a woman, and no r*pe can strip me of that. He says wanting to kill him makes sense and is normal. He makes no other mention of my violent daydreams or homicidal ideation. He tells me Saint Olga is a beautiful healer of women who have been abused and assaulted.
