You are going to break your promise. I understand. And I hold my hands over the ears of my heart, so that I will not hate you.

so let them lose their souls. based around ORGANIZED CRIME AND GANGSTER TROPES, NOIR MOTIFS; exploring themes of familial devotion, going down darker and darker paths for the sake of those you love, and gaining every piece of the world except the one you want most.
canon divergence/alternate universe if sae-byeok never pulled herself away from the world of organized crime, choosing instead to forge her own path within in, dark as it may be.
she ditches deok-su’s gang and goes on to work independently; things are good for a while. gone are the days of drug smuggling, blackmail, extortion, shaking bills from anyone who lived on their turf under the guise of ‘protection fees.’ of bearing witness to even crueler acts that let her feel dignified by comparison because she did not take part in them — there’s a level of freedom in running away from a system that wrings money from the innocent with the threat of swift punishment delivered by crowbar or metal pipe, that takes advantage of those outside of it just as much as it took advantage of her.
not that she’s any more decent than them though, with the way she prowls the streets, making use of the skills she’d been taught and those already natural to her. sae-byeok realized very soon after leaving deok-su’s gang that there is no fixed weight to paper; that the inherent value of won is meaningless when she needs it so much more than others. she is of one mind: do whatever it takes to get the money her family needs. no cost is too great when it is her mother’s life on the line.
to put it plainly, she’s great at what she does. good enough to avoid getting caught, learning how to not draw so much attention to herself, really just refining her pickpocketing to a significant degree. she gets too good at it, so good that she starts drawing the eyes of the wrong crowds, the kind that know what to look for. sae-byeok worked with them long enough to recognize a geondal, so she does her best to avoid them.
but trouble finds her, the way it always does. although, nice as that sentiment is, perhaps it isn’t entirely accurate — she toed the line long enough, she was bound to find herself back in that life one day; always sweating and obsessing over money, bleeding for it, so desperate to get her family back together at any cost. when the first offer reaches her, sae-byeok remembers that the weight of won is heavier for her than it is for others. she accepts.
so sae-byeok descends once again into the depths of the underworld. smaller jobs that get bigger and bigger, operations that evolve into full-on heists. though her line of work often means working with others, sae-byeok does best when she’s on her own.
within a few years, she establishes herself as a professional thief, of sorts. she makes enough money to buy a house for her and cheol, who is now old enough to wonder where his sister gets so much money — but also old enough to know better than to ask about it. money for his new clothes, and for activities with his friends, money to send him to an excellent school... and of course, money funneled in a near-constant stream to brokers for any sliver of information they can provide on the whereabouts of their mother. the hope in her survival a thing clenched between sae-byeok’s teeth, bitter refusal to give up, to let go.
it could resemble happiness, were it not for the shame and the frustration and the fear of her family getting hurt for her actions. sae-byeok does not need to stretch her mind much to imagine this is not the life her parents would have wanted for her, which is the source of a deep and unshakable guilt within her. she can appreciate what her father was trying to protect her from in the north when he had decided that their family would leave, but the life she lives now — precarious in many ways, ever-present threats to her livelihood lurking where she cannot see them — in some ways, it is not so different.
but she has cheol. her precious cheol, the lone spot of light in her life, so sae-byeok is careful not to lose him. she is exceedingly cautious to not bring work back home with her, spares no expense when it comes to covering her every move. she moonlights as a tech support employee for a large company, working remotely from her home just outside of seoul. a seemingly normal life she projects to keep any questions at bay. when the time comes to take up another job, it’s painted as a “work trip” for the company. cheol, already halfway through his teenage years and growing more every day, no longer questions the few days or sometimes week that his sister leaves town. she always comes back. she promised.
