Sad!Ciero, researching dog breeds for his service dog: that dachshund is adorable! Its' legs are so short!
Bentley, sat on Ciero's lap: it's cute, even with stubby legs?
Bentley, looking directly at Ciero: does that mean I'm cute too?

Sad Ciero AU
obvious TW for eating disorder, abuse, end stage anorexia (?)
hopefully it’s not too triggering?
@eldritch-hall-asylum
The ED (thought) comes from “he saved her a fortune on food because he never seemed to eat.”, which I took as restrictive eating because of stress, trauma, depression, anxiety, and self-esteem issues.
It would probably be anorexia (I’m thinking restrictive subtype…) and would gradually get worse from missing one meal to going through a whole day with half a stick of gum and a (few) coffee(s).
He had a horrible relationship with food from, seemingly, the moment that the two married. He equated his self-worth and ability to be loved with how little he ate—if he didn't eat, he'd have more money, which meant that Alice could freely use his money and might be nicer, or be a little lighter in her beatings.
At first, when they started to miss out on meals, they'd give the excuse of "I didn't have enough time to eat."—it was easy to believe and, sometimes, wasn't a lie.
It was only breakfast and/or lunch, and besides, they could always run on little energy. It was their thing.
As the years went on, the relationship with food was never remedied, and only worsened.
They hardly ate a thing. Everything was just so... unappetising. What's the point in gaining energy that you're not even going to waste on yourself?
He’d only eat when out with his brothers for lunch, or something. Otherwise, he'd touch only morsels of food to eat.
But it didn't matter. They could always run on little energy. It was their thing.
By the time she had moved back into eldritch hall, she was almost just skin and bone.
Arms and legs that were nearly just skin and bone; chest and hips, showing with clear definition; gaunt face and defined cheekbones; pale skin, and empty eyes devoid of any emotion.
Much like his stomach, he was empty.
He was sad. Broken.
They were diagnosed with end-stage anorexia, and, at first, they refused any treatment, still deep within the mindset they had when they were "living" with Alice.
But as soon as Elspeth, Patrick and his brothers got involved and persuaded them to recover, he did just that. He recovered. he put on the weight he needed to and got a better relationship with food and himself and he's been living pretty good.
if you have anything to add, please share!

Someone: *sees Sad Ciero's wedding ring* oh, how long have you been married for?
Ciero, in his twenties: 21 years.
Someone: Oh... how is that possible?
Ciero, covering baby Bentley's ears: I count it in dog years. Because my wife's a bitch-!

Super Sad! Ciero AU
this AU isn't as good as tbstashteb au, but by fuck is it angsty.
@eldritch-hall-asylum I know you're not interested in it, but eh. Do what you want with this.
TW // suicide attempt, mention of self-harm, mention of alcoholism, mention of overdose (on pain meds, not like drug-drugs) mention of disordered eating, mentioned trauma
After Ciero’s initial breakdown and months spent in the psych ward, they were allowed back home and cleared to work again. After a long and serious conversation with her family, she decided that, despite everything, she was working as a social worker again.
He loves his job, he loves making a difference, and it means the absolute world to him.
But, despite it being his dream job, every day at work is like hell.
It’s okay, though, because they’re helping people, getting children out of horribly abusive places, and helping parents get back on the right track. It's worth coming home with a fresh black eye; a broken, bloody nose; or a mark on their neck from being choked.
It’s worth seeing even more dead bodies and being threatened with death.
And just like last time, she hides it with a bright smile and empty promises to tell people when it starts getting bad.
There’s so much stress and significant trauma going on in their life that eating is more of a chore than it ever was—there’d be times when Ciero wouldn’t eat for days because they were just so stressed.
The panic attacks and flashbacks he was experiencing before were minor compared to the ones he was having late at night, paralysed with fear, sobbing hysterically, and unable to breathe when struggling to hide his problems from the others.
It’s not long until she’s getting drunk almost every night, sitting on the cold kitchen floor, giggling drunkenly with legs like jelly and a mind full of stuffing. She doesn’t have to think about what she’s seen or experienced.
Eventually, she was suffocating in feelings of helplessness; she’d feel useless and broken. She was constantly in pain, always tired, always upset, and always hurting inside, and no matter how many people she helped, it never went away.
So, she tried to feel it on the outside. Discreetly, of course, so she didn’t alarm people, so long sleeves and trousers or skirt and tights were her go-to.
All of this built up until one fateful day when Ciero decided it was their last.
They had probably the best day at work ever, which was nice.
When they came home, they already had a plan devised. It wouldn’t take too long to set up and would be easy to carry out.
And so, once Ciero was sure that everyone was asleep he took his bottle of Codeine, a bottle of vodka, a blade, and a boxcutter into the downstairs bathroom.
First, he carefully taped his note to the mirror and then opened the bottle of vodka, drinking about half before he took his sharp blade and boxcutter and attacked his arms and thighs with cuts and large gashes.
He was close to passing out at this point and shakily opened the bottle of Codeine, shaking them into his mouth and swallowing them.
Leaning heavily against the wall, black spots began to overtake their vision at uneven intervals, and they felt their breathing get slower, each inhale leaving them begging for more air. They felt vomit rise from their stomach and were forced forward by a strong heave as vomit fell from their lips and they collapsed, unconscious.
They were found later by Jack G, who had gotten up to get some water from the kitchen and heard a crash in the bathroom. When he noticed the bathroom was locked, he got either Zephyr or Octavian (Octavian more likely) to break down the door, where they would then find Ciero’s bloody and mutilated body on the floor.
An ambulance is quickly called as Ciero is moved from the bathroom to the living room, where they can easily assess them.
They noticed their breathing was slow and laboured, their skin was cold and clammy, and despite how hard they were shaken or how loud they said their name, they didn’t respond.
When Ciero would later wake up in the hospital, she would be surrounded by worried family. But, most importantly, standing at the foot of the hospital bed was Patrick, who simply stared at her with a loving, yet cold gaze, and said what everyone in the room knew and wanted to say themselves.
“You’re going to quit social work. It’s done nothing but almost kill you, quit the job.”
There could be a possible visit to the psych ward again, but I don’t know.
Additional tidbits
In this AU Ferris would appear much later, like after the attempt instead of after the breakdown
Elspeth would definitely worry the most out of the entire family, based on the fact that she lost her twin to suicide and didn’t notice any warning signs for either (Elliot or Ciero)
^ If Ciero had succeeded, she would have most definitely blamed herself.
Because Ciero survives his attempt, there’d definitely be daily check-ins from all of his family members so that they can help when things get bad.
Would probably be diagnosed with BPD a little while after the attempt.

i’m interested in your thoughts on the ‘Super Sad! Ciero AU’, if you have any? (there’s probably a bunch of general angst/medical whump i could add, i’ll probably sit down and research stuff tomorrow)
Alright!
1-I love the parallel between Ciero's breakdown and Patrick's attempt as a teen. It just... *chef's kiss*
2-Octavian being the one to find them is also perfect. Sort of another parallel (this time to Elspeth and Elliot).
3-Patrick being the one to tell them what needs to be said is another good thing. Patrick has always been the one who can tell Ciero plainly what's going on.
4-Jack being the one to hear the commotion another perfect moment.
It sort of shows how he became a part of the family in the past couple decades (I imagine something similar happening when Richard died - only Jack was too nervous to say what he heard).

Super Sad! Ciero AU is slowly rotting itself into my brain, absolutely loving the angst and sheer amount of medical whump i could add. thanks for giving me the idea lmfao
if you have any additions or headcanons you want to add or say, feel free. i’m (slowly) making my own headcanons and stuff, so i’ll probably reblog my original post and add them, but i’m interested to hear yours! (no pressure ofc!)
I... don't have any ideas for it.
Honestly, I'm more focused on the "everything is fine" au.

“"Fourteen years, three months, two weeks, and six days exactly."” (chp 33, main book) why is Alice counting how long Ciero’s been gone for? if she had it her way, where she could manipulate and control them in whatever way she pleased, what would happen? has she always been obsessed with Ciero, that’s kind of the only thing i can think of…
I just thought it would be a good way to show how obsessive Alice is.
Had she been able to manipulate Ciero, I feel that the Sad Ciero au would have happened (as it currently stands, that au is not canon, nor will it ever be).
She's kind of... always been obsessed with them. Because... they're just really easy to manipulate.

sure i can certainly try (asks might be slow, i’m trying to write something for the super sad Ciero AU i made)
was there ever a point when Elspeth and Richard got along? like, when they didn’t want to rip eachother’s guts out?
Probably when they were younger (like, seven or so).
The two of them were kinds chill? Because their families went to Procksy Bay together when they were younger.
As for after marriage...
...probably roughly around when Ciero was born. That was kind of a sweet spot.
From, like, a couple years before to about a year after? Yeah, times were good.
After that, though? Not much, really.

I have questions for some characters in the Windroe Trauma Dump post. I’m going to ask them generation by generation (youngest->oldest (I don’t have any for the original generation)). — Windroe Angst Anon
✩ I’m curious to know more about Zephyr’s almost arranged marriage, if you have anything?
✩ Would Ciero’s health cause them any distress (eg. pain/flare ups)? Also, you forgot to add Ciero’s marriage with Alice.
✩ You forgot to add in Favio’s previous eating disorder, lack of self worth, and smoking-related health scare.
Aight! So, the nearly-arranged marriage was when Zephyr was sixteen.
Richard and one of his pals thought it'd be fun to set up their kids.
The two got along alright (they were more...friends, than in love), and they even dated for two years - but when Zephyr realised he was gay, he ended the engagement/relationship.
Alright, I'll tell you this: in the main timeline, Ciero did NOT marry Alice. That was purely in the sad Ciero au. I have said this multiple times.
And oof, I'll add that into Favio's bit.
