#furry #my art #eyestrain #bright colors #neons #<-burned my eyes while drawing this and i want y’all to stay safe #one of my classes cancelled this morning so i had sooo much time so i drew a thing #personally i like drawing nonhuman characters because they allow for more shapes than people do #and like. i love shapes idk if you’ve picked up on this yet but shapes and colors are The Thing my brain needs #no matter how much i try to draw more realistically i always fall back to bright colors and strong lines and shapes #because i love them #i chose neons here because for whatever reason everything felt so dark this morning #i kept trying to draw but even white wasn’t bright enough and i checked the settings and everything idk it’s probably my eyes #so i needed something bright to see #and see i did #so i drew this #i was feeling like bright highlighter yellow and green #bc i really want to dye my hair back to highlighter colors it’s rad but fades quick #if you’re wondering what animal this is: idk. i was looking for Shapes and i made them #i was feeling a little bit like borzois (russian wolfhounds)#but they’re a tad different #whatever #this was fun though i might draw more furry shit idk #feeling great drawing so cartoony i feel like i’ve been healed #i mean. it’s not like i haven’t been drawing cartoony but i mean like #stronger lines brighter colors more pop-out eye-grabbing y’know?#it calms me #anyway i have friday off so yayyyy i get to sleep soon #i’ve slept like. 15 hours this week #major L to me

so ik that one's pretty much canon? but. dude may seem insane on the ring but. you'd actually be surprised how mellow & chill he is outside of the ring

like in fact, in certain scenarioz? dude may be just as mellow as glass mfing joe

despite being a huge bastard, dude always knew how being lucky feels like. he doesn't know entirely why but he's proud of that & wears it like a cloak & will def shove that fact into ur face constantly

dude's got a ma and a sis. but he's pretty much never seen his father... prob because they're divorced or smth

dude's also a very very homey person 2 me. like he misses Dublin, his ma (he's a huge mama's boy yesss) there more than he cares to admit not only to others but also to himself.

he and his sis r also. v silly with each other. they def fight each other over things not worth fighting over on a daily basis

aran is a huge dog person:

but their friendship goes beyond just being drinking buds- like soda understands like. 0.1% of english <- that's me being generous. & arn doesn't understand a lick of russian. yet they perfectly understand each other

Howdy! I've been following your work since 2014ish and you never cease to amaze me with your artwork! I was first introduced to your work with Machete and the stuff labeled 'Sighthound', but ahh stupid question, I actually never learned what Sighthound actually is. I sometimes see snippets or lore but never knew what the general premise of the worldbuilding or the cool setting for the illustrations. Could you explain it please? Sorry for the long ask, I hope you're well and wish you a good day!

So a sighthound is just a commonly used name for a type of dog that hunts by using it's sight instead of smell, it’s not something I invented. Sighthound breeds are some of the oldest dog breeds around, some have stayed relatively unchanged for thousands of years, and they all have somewhat similar builds; they're very leggy and thin (not underweight, just built that way), and they have long and narrow heads. They're famous for being very fast runners (again, they chase their prey using their great eyesight, kind of like cheetahs) and were historically used to hunt rabbits and gazelles. Some of the most common breeds include:

Greyhound

Saluki

Borzoi, aka Russian wolfhound

Afghan hound

and Scottish deerhound

but there's also a lot of very rare breeds around, like Azawakh

and some that are fully unrecognized in the west, like the Chinese Shannxi Xigou

I draw a lot of sighthounds, I just think they're neat. They have this elegance and gracefulness to them that makes them seem almost un-doglike, but they also have this ancient, primal aura that a lot of more modern breeds might lack, imho. Their flexible, muscular bodies create a lot of eyecatching silhouettes that make them very fun and interesting to draw, and there's a variety of fur types that you can create many different kinds of visual flourishes and textures out of.

Race: Hell Hound (Borzoi/Russian Wolfhound is his breed)

Distinguishing Marks or Characteristics: Kanai has rather short, straight horns that are a shiny black. He wears a halo above his head ironically, and the gold color of his halo match his cheek piercings, his 30 mm plugs in his ears, and the upside-down crosses on chains from cartilage piercings on each ear. He wears black studs in his two top lip piercings, and both bottom lip piercings, and a seamless black ring in his septum piercing. The two nostril piercings have black horseshoe rings, and sometimes he wears a black barbell in his bridge piercing. His scleras are black. He always tries to assume the wardrobe of an elderly man (think, lots of sweater vests?)

Personality —

Greatest Strength: His determination. He never gives up if something has been set out to do; he doesn’t accept no for an answer.

Greatest Weakness: Earthly emotions. In hell, Kanai excels at anything he tries with minimum effort expended, however, he just can’t grasp the concept of emotions he cannot experience, though he desperately tries. His boyfriend, Draeko, has bipolar-1 and what started as a research project for the hellhound turned out to be just the beginning of something much bigger 🖤

Soft Spot: Doesn’t really have a soft spot as he doesn’t have emotions, but he does feel a force drawing him to Draeko that might eventually change everything for both of them 🖤

Miscellaneous Trivia —

Is Cerberus’ 12th son, and was next in line to take his father’s place in guarding the gates of hell for the next millennia. Before he spent the rest of his painfully long life at the gate, their culture required him to partake in RAMspringa, where he was forced into a human vessel and sent to earth with a chaperone (Alistar) and had to experience everything that the planet had to offer him before he could agree to take his father’s place.

Unsure of how to navigate most situations, he constantly looks to Alistar for reassurance and advice, despite Al frequently steering him in the wrong direction “for the lolz”

His boyfriend, Draeko, is diagnosed with Bipolar-1 and struggles to regulate his own emotions, giving Kanai even more of a difficult time trying to decipher the mutt and how he should react.

How severe are they?

Completely encumbering and constant. The mortal vessel he was given before being sent to earth had gone missing on inspection day and never received its “earth allergen immunity” vaccination the day before, leaving the poor hellhound with the most sensitive nose that reacts to nearly anything that could coax out a sneeze or two.

Do they get sick often?

Being from Hell, his immune system is pretty resistant to earthly viruses although he definitely gets a cold/flu a couple times a year like an average human.

How bad is it usually?

Due to the unfamiliarity, he always feels like he’s dying, regardless if it’s severe or not. He will complain often to Al, but Draeko won’t give him the chance to complain because he’s already coming with whatever the hellhound was about to ask for.

Do they stifle?

It’s not that he doesn’t stifle if possible, but most times his sneezes are too strong to successfully contain, so often times Kanai will forget it’s an option.

How loud are their sneezes?

Not super loud, but very breathy. Involves a ton of ‘K’s and ‘S’s,

What do they sneeze into?

If alone or out in public, his hands/elbow. If he’s trying to get a little spicy for Al, he’ll aim for either Draeko, whatever in Alistar’s hands at the time, or just simply on his best friend.

How often do they sneeze?

Because of his mortal vessel’s extreme sensitivity to earthly allergens or even just touch, they’re constantly bothering him, although some worse days than others.

How many times do they sneeze in a fit?

Doesn’t usually have long fits, and 1-2 sneezes at once is his usual, unless he’s had prolonged exposure.

Do they have build-ups or are they sudden?

Extremely sudden and without much warning. As soon as he feels it coming, it’s too late to stop it.

Do they sneeze in public?

Yes, as Kanai doesn’t understand the emotion of embarrassment.

Mike bears a pretty strong resemblance to a real-life dog breed, the Borzoi (photo on the right from Wikipedia). I think this is actually pretty interesting, and not accidental. However, there was something I had to clear up before drawing the conclusion that Mike was, in fact, inspired by the Borzoi, to make sure I wasn't grossly mistaken.

Mike definitely has some "fantasy monster" type features as well, but the coat type, tail, long muzzle and large, watchful eyes look very much like features of the Borzoi to me. I went back and forth about this for a while, looking at photos of other closely-related dog breeds, while I asked "what about the ears?"

I don't have expert knowledge on the Borzoi by any means, so I did a little research on its physical characteristics. I found that, while Borzoi typically have an ear type called rose ears (in an internet search for Borzoi, most image results have this ear type), natural prick ears are also naturally occurring within the breed. Here's a Tumblr post by user noodle-dragon showing examples of Borzoi with different ear types.

I digress a bit from my original point - in the real world, the Borzoi is a sighthound breed. This category encompasses many breeds and refers to dogs that were bred for the purpose of locating prey by sight (thus the name), then chasing and capturing the prey to assist hunters. Interestingly, Borzoi were used to hunt wolves, and were known as the Russian Wolfhound until 1936.

Returning to the panel where Zebro says that Mike is a trained hunting dog makes it obvious to me that there is purposeful resemblance here. He didn't just model the Zoldycks' hunting dog after any dog - he chose to model it after a breed that was used for centuries for the purpose of hunting and chasing prey. This is an example of really incredible attention to detail on Togashi's part.

So in that last drawing I uploaded of Peg sad in the pound I concluded it by saying I've always headcanoned that she and the others eventually end up getting adopted, so I decided to draw that.

Bull was adopted by a local butcher, Toughy was adopted by a professional boxer, Dachsie was adopted by a sweet old woman who constantly knits him cute little sweaters, Pedro was adopted by a couple as a present for their teenage daughter, Boris was adopted by that man that Tramp pretended to be the pet of to start a scuffle between the man and the cop so he could sneak Lady into the zoo (I always intended that since Boris is a philosopher he should be adopted by an intellectual who reads books a lot, and I suddenly remembered this guy and thought it was perfect), and Peg was adopted by a wealthy couple who already had a retired showdog of their own, an Italian Greyhound names Giovanni, and the two become mates.

I imagine Giovanni speaks in an Italian accent (I mean Jock is a Scottish terrier and he speaks with a Scottish accent, Bull is an English bulldog and speaks with a cockney accent, Pedro is a chihuahua and speaks with a Mexican accent, Boris is a borzoi (aka a Russian Wolfhound) and speaks with a Russian accent so why not keep the theme going?)

And yeah, halfway through making this I gave up on backgrounds lmao

The other day the lunch quiz included "whats another name for a russian wolfhound" and before quiz reader had even finished i was shouting borzoi and turns out no one had ever heard of them before! So i started saying how theyre like unicorns or ling haired greyhounds and people are googling and then they were LAUGHING and saying its like a bad drawing of a dog :( theyre so magical and lovely how could they do this to the angels.
