Alright, friends, it's almost October and although I probably shouldn't buy any more books (said with an uncomfortable glance at shelves upon shelves of unread ones) I am so in the mood for something spooky!! Past faves have been:
Night Film by Marisha Pessl (adore! Might need a reread)
Rules for Vanishing by Kate Alice Marshall (sooo much scarier than expected, I mean wow! This was YA? How??)
Harrow Lake by Kat Ellis (really fun and just the right amount of scary)
I am looking for something scary, yet not terribly disturbing, I'd say. The other day I rewatched Shutter Island (which I loved as a teenager) and am embarrassed to say that that felt like too much somehow? But then again, films might be different from books, Idk.
Does anybody have any recs? @books-and-cookies @sleepyreads @just0nemorepage @appleinducedsleep @whilereadingandwalking @miss-nerd-alert I don't know if you all like scary reads, but as some of the book people on here who I could think of right now, maybe you have ideas? Also @hrimceald? <3

“Came back wrong” but halfway through they see that this is not what their loved one would want. Despite the sacrifices and effort put in to bring them back, they give up just as it’s finished and the vision of that what is lost is out of reach. The form crumbles right before their eyes, again.
Not like this.

Some people be like ‘reading is boring’ while books will make me laugh out loud while I’m being alone, climbing up the walls in excitement, covering my face in embarrassment or checking my flat before I go to bed in the dark ‘cause they scared the shit out of me

Hello, lovelies! Tell Me Something Tuesday is a meme created by Rainy Day Ramblings and currently hosted by Because Reading Is Better Than Real Life, That's What I'm Talking About, For What It's Worth, Book Girl of Mur-y-Castell and Offbeat YA. It provides weekly discussion prompts on various book and blogging topics with optional participation. You can sign up for prompts here.
This week’s prompt is: What are your favorite books/audiobooks that you read in 2022?
I always post a list around New Year's of all my favorite books of the year, so consider this a kind of preview to that more complete one. Overall, I think these were my top three (not counting graphic novels or fanfiction), and you've probably heard me screeching about them for months-- not to mention the several people who got copies of What Moves the Dead for Christmas. Here’s a shock though: not all of them are horror! 😂
Rules for Vanishing by Kate Alice Marshall If I had to choose one, this is probably my favorite book of the year and a new automatic read for the author. It's spooky YA horror with a wlw romance, and Marshall has a gift for creating uncanny atmospheres and twisting plots.
The Wicker King by K. Ancrum This book ripped out my heart and stomped on it, but I love it anyway (and if a book makes me cry, it had better be worth it). I loved the two main characters, and the stylization in the novel is really cool too. Again, I'll be looking into more of Ancrum's fiction.
What Moves the Dead by T. Kingfisher This a fun, creepy little novella and an adaptation of Poe's "The Fall of the House of Usher" with a charming nonbinary main character. I've read all of Kingfisher's horror novels so far, and this one doesn't disappoint.

Some favorites. I've reread Mongrels by SGJ and Into the Drowning Deep by Mira Grant at least once a year since I first found them... Will never stop recommending them.

i hope no one minds if i read this bitch: rules for vanishing from page 68
Tumblr media
wish i would’ve started this earlier but whatever, i’m doing it now! so far i’m really into this whole concept.
“he looks like he is ready to turn, to head back to the street and the cars they arrived in, to decide that this is a dream or a mistake and return to a life where things make sense and roads don’t stitch themselves together out of moonlight. i wish more than anything that he had.” well based on that i’m gonna say he either dies or disappears later on in the book considering the earlier 9-1-1 call.
“whose hand am i holding?” what the FUCK
sara: we broke a rule, but we escaped the consequences. it’s fine.
narrator: it was not, in fact, fine.
“behind them, farther down the road, someone screams” alright.
SHE DOESN’T REMEMBER NICK???
Tumblr media
why are they telling us they found becca so early on…
aaaand i’m guessing this guy they just came across is the villain
that dude is creepy
whta if miranda’s the villain…she seems to know how that place works a little too well and mel just met her
yeah i don’t trust miranda at all, she’s being really dodgy. i bet she’s the wicked amongst them.
just remembered that trina knows something the rest of us don’t
SHE KILLED HER STEPFATHER?!
Tumblr media
WHAT THE FUCK
wait wait wait so was vanessa a clone?? like how anthony was when sara let go? and does that mean nick is out there lost?
damn all these people do is make mistakes
OMG???
can’t believe i saw how different vanessa was and still didn’t realize something was off
not miranda knew the whole time omg?
jeremy’s so damn stupid
okay but i wonder if it’s jeremy or an imposter
wtf why is sara lying about what happened to miranda??
MIRANDA DIED WHEN?!
she had her notebook. because of course.
so the words on sara’s arm must be the same ones on becca’s
not too trusting of grace rn and i don’t like that description of trina either.
oh grace is DEFINITELY an echo or at the very least, evil.
though becca didn’t say a name so for all i know she could be talking about miranda
i’m guessing we’re getting closer to sara realizing how much of a mistake it was to let trina keep that book
well. becca warned them.
“when ashford enters several minutes later, she appears perfectly calm” this bitch is crazy
Tumblr media
oh my God, jeremy!!
“i tried not to write the words. i’m sorry” bitch??
my God.
i desperately wanna know about miranda
? she just. wrote down what happened to her so why doesn’t she remember?
WOAH THAT’S HARSH
something’s definitely going on with sara cause she would never say that
DID BECCA JUST CHOOSE A DUDE OVER HER SISTER?!
“it’s half past dawn, becca. she was in bed” EXCUSE ME?!
Tumblr media
is sara an unreliable narrator even more than she previously was? is the sara we’ve been getting the story from even real or is she an echo?
“the rules are the rules” she says as if they haven’t been breaking them since the start
would be funny if lucy’s an echo or like the big bad and she’s been drawing becca and sara there to possess them or something
wait. we still don’t know who they called 9-1-1 for in the beginning
LUCY IS EVIL
“one of them is lying”
Tumblr media
MIRANDA LEFT THE NOTEBOOK NOT BECCA
wow. i did not think the pattern would come to miranda.
not them all meeting up that night in the woods being sara’s plan omg??
“we’ve got plenty of life ahead of us” oh that’s so sad
WHAT
not this book making me cry
THAT PLOT TWIST??????

« I thought that when you lost someone, you lost the details first, but details are what I still have—the crinkle at the corners of her eyes when she made fun of me, the way she’d chew on her thumbnail when she was really focused. It’s the big things that are slipping away. Her face. Her voice. The way it felt to be around her. »

I finally got The Narrow by Kate Alice Marshall and I plan to start it tonight. But does that mean I need to reread all her other books?
Yes, I think it does.

“ALL RIGHT. WHO’S coming?” I ask. I sound calm, despite my heart pounding so hard I can hear it. No one else says anything. They all stare at the road—or at me. Like I have answers.
You expect in a moment like this to have trouble believing or a need to search for a rational explanation. Maybe it’s like that for the others—denial, trying to find evidence that they’re dreaming or hallucinating or that it’s some kind of trick. But for me, at least, it’s like a puzzle piece clicking into place. A feeling that everything has finally aligned the way it should be.
The road is here, and Becca is waiting.
“No way,” Jeremy says, shifting his weight back from the road. “Have you guys ever watched, like, a single movie? We get on that road and about thirty seconds from now some hook-handed motherfucker is wearing our guts like a scarf.”
