I haven't returned to a modern AU for a long time, so I decided to make a few Christmas hc

Hiccup:

• celebrates the first part of the day with friends, and later goes to his father to celebrate with him

• a fan of Christmas markets (drags the whole group and cousins along with him)

• as a child, the holiday was quite lonely for him, so now he tries to spend it with all his friends and relatives and make them happy

• likes to watch fireworks from a high place, be it a rooftop or a hill

Astrid:

• rolls her eyes when the twins play another Christmas song, but a minute later joins them in dancing and awkwardly singing

• gives very thoughtful gifts

• has been winning the group “snow battle” for several years now

• likes to watch Christmas movies (after dinner and gifts) while sitting on the couch with all his roommates

Fishlegs:

• likes to spend a day sitting warm with cocoa and a book

• very warm, so the gang falls on him after a cold street and hugs him (once they knocked over an armchair and broke a lamp, so now Fishlegs is waiting for them on the sofa)

• saves money for part of the year to give it to charity at Christmas

• the first year argued with the twins and Snotlout what a spruce should look like, but later gave up and now everyone decorates their part (it looks terrifying, but the twins are delighted, and the rest find this tradition funny)

Twins:

• have been preparing for this day since the first day of winter

• get up at 1 am on December 25th to shout "IT'S CHRISTMAS" and wake everyone up

• they take the whole group outside and play together in the snow

• Ugly Sweater Contest Champions

• they think their sweaters are the best

• Tuffnut (not ironically) believes in Santa, but others have a heart to tell him the truth (Snotlout tried, but Astrid shut him up)

Snotlout:

• the one who prepares the holiday dinner (once Astrid volunteered to help with the salad, but it caught fire, so they decided to entrust the food to Snotlout)

• knits sweaters for all pets as gifts

• pretended not to care about Christmas for the first few years, thinking it was cool, but quickly joined in with the general holiday spirit

Viggo: I believe Hiccup’s relationships with his friends are, well, very close, to say the least. He’s either had sex with one, or all of them.

Dagur: How do you know that? Did Hiccup tell you?

Viggo: Not directly, no. Have you seen their body language and the comfortable way they act around each other?

Dagur: Yes, but that doesn’t mean they’ve had sex!

Viggo: Dagur, the asker told us not to get too jealous.

Dagur: Jealous? Who said anything about jealous?!

Viggo, smiling: Your face is going red.

Dagur: Fine! I’m jealous! They get to have a turn at Hiccup and I don’t? That’s totally unfair!

Viggo: It may seem that way to us, but his friends also didn’t go to war with him.

Dagur: Um, okay, I see your point.

Ruffnut knows exactly which buttons to press with any of her partners. Man, woman, doesn’t matter, she knows them well enough to know how to get them all riled up.

And Astrid loves a good fight. Which works out well for her, because Ruffnut can appreciate a rough lover.

She started out small. Getting on her nerves by asking her what she was up to when it was obvious she was training for combat. Astrid was in the arena, after all. In the arena, assaulting poor defenseless targets with her axe and the sweat on her brow tells her for how long she’s been at it.

The sight of her worked body and her prowess just pushed Ruffnut onward. Asking questions that broke her concentration, making relatively dumb statements on purpose, “accidentally” knocking over a target, … She’ll do just about anything to rile Astrid up.

And then she does. She succeeds. She riles her right up and Astrid knows exactly what to do with her.

Still in the arena together, Astrid pins Ruffnut against the stone wall and smashes their lips together. There are a variety of reasons why she would train herself to the bone, but when such a session gets interrupted it leaves her restless and bursting with energy and it wants to escape. Since there are only two reasons Ruffnut would have to interrupt her- to either annoy her or because she is horny- that just got her even more worked up.

So she has her pinned up against the wall, their lips and tongues locked in a heated kiss. Ruffnut moans in satisfaction and relief, throwing her arms around Astrid’s neck to keep her close. This is what she was hoping for when she came in search of her girlfriend. She desired her attention, her touch, her lips.

Upon hearing her moan and without releasing her from this kiss, Astrid lifts her by her butt and her legs settle around her waist. She keeps Ruffnut pinned, their kisses grow more heated by the second. Her arms must be burning from all that axe-throwing, but that doesn’t seem to matter to her.

They pull away for a much needed gulp of air, both their cheeks deep pink.

“Your hut or mine?” Astrid asks.

“Whichever’s closest!” She puts her girlfriend down and that is where they head.

It feels pretty great, ngl. Thanks!

I'm always like "wow! me?" when people compliment like, my characterization of the gang because imposter syndrome is real af and also I underestimate almost everything about me, so sometimes outside validation is nice.

But also, I've lived with these characters in my head, for like, depending on if I count from RTTE s1 or when I first got into HTTYD in 2013, 8-10 years. I have my PhD in them at this point.

Animatic ideas and songs that remind me of the Dragon Riders:

(because when I obsess over something, it takes hold over every aspect of my life, including, how I listen to my music)

“Family” by Mother Mother is the gang's friendship summed up

“Cult Of Dionynus” by The Orion Sound also gives me the gang's vibes, but while “Family” is about a platonic, familial friendship, with “Cult of Dionysus” I think of them as a romantic polycule (the mighty OT6)

“Melancholy Astronautic Man” by Allie Moss reminds so much of Fishlegs and Heather

“Someone you like” by The Girl and the Dreamcatcher is RttE Hiccstrid. Just yes, trust me on this, I'm right

“Saint Bernard” by Lincoln makes me think of both Hiccup and Snotlout, but for different reasons

McCafferty's “Beachboy” also gives me the gang's vibes, but not sure why

“Bromance” by nigahiga is an accurate representation of Snotlout and Tuffnut when they decide to be besties

Then Astrid makes a joke about them looking like a couple and Tuff breaks into Ninja Sex Party's “If We Were Gay” and Snotlout is not amused

“You, me, and Steve” by Garfunkel and Oates works so well with literally any ship+1 among the Dragons riders, try it yourself

“Boys will be Bugs” by Cavetown is teenage Snotlout material, but it's also teenage Hiccup material. I dunno, but I can hear both of them in this song

Meanwhile, whenever I hear “Talk to Me”, also by Cavetown, I just think of all the hurt/comfort fanfics I'll never write about the riders being each other's emotional rocks and leaning on each other when they need to decompress

I can totally imagine Ruff and Tuff performing “Have You Seen My Sister Evelyn?” by Evelyn Evelyn, except it's "Have you seen my cousin Gruff?"

“Heather” by Conan Gray is so freaking perfect for unrequited Fishlout - Fishlegs is in love with Heather and Snotlout mopes about it

“I can't decide” by Scissor Sisters was Dagur's vibe when he was evil

“UwU” by Chevy -> Snotlout about Fishlegs after he realizes his crush wasn't exactly Thor Bonecrusher

An AU materializes in the form of a very Dark Hiccup singing to Astrid “If I Killed Someone For You” by Alec Benjamin after finally killing Viggo for his transgressions against the Riders

“Love like you” from Steven Universe works in so many ways, but I'll propose Hiccup and Toothless, thinking about each other and their one-in-billion connection

Kodaline's “Brother” makes me think of Toothless and Hiccup, or just, the riders and their dragons in general - that tight bond they all have with each other. Or even just the riders themselves, amongst each other.

Hookfang's evergrwoing feelings towards Snotlout portrayed throughout the trilogy of songs from Kaden Makey "I just really hate/like/miss your face" (ik that's supposed to be a romantic song(s) but i think it can work for a platonic relationship as well, sue me). It's like, 1st works before Httyd1, and his feelings towards humanity in general, then the 2nd it's already at any point after they form their bond (Hookfang is a major tsundere peeps), and theeeeeen, 3rd is just, angsty, hurt Snotlout fanfic :>

“Oh Fionna” by Neil Patrick Harris from Adventure Time but Hiccup wrote it for Astrid during RttE - and then never had to courage to sing it to her up until their wedding night

One of the riders singing Centaurworld's “Rider's Lullaby” to their dragon, who's still recovering from an injury received in their latest battle

“In Our Bedroom After The War” by Stars is an absolutely beautiful song that I think illustrates the few months post HTTYD2, or perhaps even more accurately, HTTYD3 pretty well

“Don't Forget” from Deltarune, and it's Astrid, singing their kids to sleep and definitely thinking about Stormfly the whole time

Hmm, Anon, there are quite a few good pairings for me, but my favorites to write are probably

1. Krogan/Astrid

(They have a lot of things in common, and would probably get along well with each other :3)

2. Viggo/Krogan

(The Tension between these two is amazing to write; top tier if I'm in the mood to write slow burn fic)

3. Mala/Krogan

gonna @i-wishforwhump because they made me love this pairing; they're actually a lot more fitting than Dagur/Mala, and I do have a slow-burn in the works for them.

4. Viggo/Hiccup/Krogan

While I technically would probably never get around to writing your typical Vigcup (if you're looking for this ship, I highly reccomend @mdoodlerfandomart; their art is god-tier and very nice for this ship), I do really like the the ot3 that Hiccup, Krogan and Viggo create.

Hiccup and Viggo both are more intellectual types, but Krogan just seems to me like he'd be interested in listening to what the both of them have to talk about (even if he doesn't understand it.)

Also, Poly ships for the win

5. Ot6/Ot5 Dragon Riders/Dragon Rider! Krogan

They're just fun to write, I suppose. Not as interesting of a ship to write as the others above this one, but its still very fun to write anyways.

Winter

My piece for the fluff prompt for polyshipprompts week, OT6 of course, any I do are most likely going to be OT6 in some way. This one could also be considered silly but I liked it for this one.

THE PROMPT

No warnings, it’s just fluff, and it’s under the read more.

Actually, warning for a line of Disney edit (not that that’s really necessary)

Winter was on its way on the Edge, Hiccup could feel it in his foot. The metal was cold, more uncomfortable when on correctly compared to when it was misaligned, and the spring needed oiling more often to avoid grinding. He checked the inventory for what was necessary and sighed when he realized the oil he used during winter, less likely to solidify in the cold, was running low. Arguably his least favorite season (aside from devastating winter), he knew this would once again be a test in running the Edge. Last winter that they stayed, the twins had been constantly complaining about the cold even though it was warmer than the same time on Berk, Snotlout almost got frostbite due to having to prove himself to no one, and there were a few heated discussions about supply usage, not to mention the times he fell on the ice and hit his head when Toothless wasn’t there to prop him up. Part of him hoped that things would go smoother this year, especially with their new relationship. Another part of him told him that hope was rather unlikely, nothing changed with any of their personalities, in fact they came with their various random squabbles even more often. With that in mind, he went to write a letter to Berk for some winter supplies to pick up in a few days: extra warm clothes and blankets, various medicinal plants in case they couldn’t make it to a friendly place for help, long lasting food, spare candles, oil for his leg, and several other things. He tied the note to a Mail Terror and sent it off before going to check on the supplies he was already preparing on the Edge. While they did plan on going home to Berk for Snoggletog, they were determined to learn to stay on their own for some time.

They went to get the supplies a few days later, a successful haul with much of the necessary supplies staying in good conditions. The only major problem: the fur vest that he asked for was missing. The good news was he didn’t get sick as often, he could be without it for small amounts of time, the bad news was that it would be much more comfortable and useful to have it with him. He went to the twin’s hut; it wasn’t a rarity for one of them to take someone’s clothes for one eccentric reason or another. Astrid met him on the way looking for her furred hood from her parents who insisted that she have it –not to mention it secretly helped her be less homesick.

What they didn’t expect was Tuffnut missing his favorite scarf, but after finding that out, the twins fighting about it was completely expected. Astrid and Hiccup raised their brows at each other before rolling their eyes to find out where the warm clothes had gone. Fishlegs didn’t know about the missing items when they found him and Meatlug so there was only one option: Snotlout.

Finding him was easy, nothing was on fire and there weren’t any yells of Hookfang’s name so they went to his hut first. He didn’t answer the door when they knocked and shouted his name but they were all used to the lack of personal space so eventually they walked in just to see if he was still there.

Lo and behold, Snotlout was in his bed, covered in a blanket from his mom and cuddling the missing items as he napped. Hiccup laughed quietly into Astrid’s shoulder as she covered her mouth with a hand. Their boyfriend was adorable and finding him wrapped around their missing warm clothes was a huge juxtaposition to the demeanor he tried to portray. They went to sneak out quietly and ask for their clothes when he woke up but when they made it out the doorway to his bedroom, they heard a large crash.

“You took my favorite scarf!” Tuffnut’s unmistakable voice shouted in mock betrayal.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about!” Snotlout said with a rustle of fabric, probably trying to hide the evidence.

“Don’t play coy with me; I know you have Hiccup’s vest and Astrid’s hood too! I can’t believe you’ve done this to us, such a dishonorable act. And my own love! Dishonor! Dishonor on you! Dishonor on your yak!” Tuffnut cried out.

“I think this would be a good time to leave.” Astrid whispered tugging Hiccup away from the shipwreck in progress.

“You’re probably right, thought, I think Tuff’s only mad because he didn’t steal them first.”

Astrid laughed, leading Hiccup out by the hand.

This would be an interesting season.

hiccup makes dragon noises back at toothless and he calls astrid m'lady and he does little drawings of all of his friends

and astrid goes on morning flights with stormfly and she makes yaknog for her friends around the holidays and she

and snotlout sings lullabies to baby dragons and he rubs nightmare gel into hooky's scales every night and he gives his friends nicknames

and fishlegs plants flower gardens and he cuddles meatlug every night and he can talk to his friends about dragons for hours

and tuffnut has 10 chickens that live in his house that he takes care of and he trains dragons to do little tricks and he likes to play pranks on his friends

and ruffnut does her best to raise a little baby dragon on her own and she cooks dinner for her friends and she cut off her hair to make a splint for a hurt dragon

and i just love them so much

Shot in the dark here, but who will be going to either Colossalcon? I really want to get the OT6 together for waterpark cosplay shenanigans? We have a Hiccup and Astrid, we just need the twins, Fishlegs, and Snotlout. And honestly I think I’d be fine with characters outside of the OT6 as well, but I think it would be adorable to have the gang.

And like, I could try to help people put their cosplays together too if needed?

Oofs, I wasn’t expecting such a reception to this idea and I know it's been a couple of days, but I'll try to explain what I was thinking when I thought of this dark-but-not-really!Hiccup concept.

So I’ve mentioned that this Hiccup is basically the same as canon movie Hiccup. He's still Berk's hero and dragon expert, he's still on the side of what he feels is good and right. He still helps people and rescues dragons everywhere.

There are just a few key differences here and there that make him a tad bit darker than what canon Hiccup is actually like.

1. love is conditional.

This is immediately a big difference compared to canon!Hiccup because he feels like he believes in the existence of unconditional love. So that's a difference with this version of Dark!Hiccup. Or like, Greyish!Hiccup, if you will.

One of the things that he’s been lead to believe growing up is that love is good and nice to have and give, but that it’s very much a thing based on conditions. At least when it comes to humans due to him first needing to fit in or have his unconventional ways be perceived as useful before he received any sort of acceptance.

In this AU, he doesn't come home to Berk after the Red Death with the belief "I'm finally accepted for who I am", but more with "I'm finally useful as I am." Which are two very different mindsets. One is definitely healthier than the other.

The latter has lead him to believe that his dad’s love for him, his Riders’ love for him, and even Astrid’s love for him will fade the second he’s out of this perceived grace and can’t fulfill this role of hero they’ve put him in after the defeat of the Red Death.

He doesn't know that this isn't true and that they do love him to death and beyond. And that while his love for them is still that strong as well. This is actually a mindset that makes how much he loves them hurtful to him in a way because of this perceived belief that they don't feel as strongly for him.

This is also true when he's together with Astrid. He loves her, enjoys his time with her "while he still can". It's a very stressful existence. (Or the OT6 if you prefer. ;D)

This excludes the dragons, especially Toothless, as they didn't need him to prove himself as worthy first. He just needed to not kill or hurt them, which is really the bare minimum.

2. He's kind of two-faced.

The usually cheery and overly enthusiastic Hiccup that the Dragon Riders know and love isn't quite as real as they think. He's kind of two-faced on that matter, acting a certain way and hiding behind a façade of naivety. You can't tell that he's always overthinking most things if he doesn't look like it. Works great on enemies, too, who often take him at face value at first before he and the Dragon Riders show them what they are really like.

In reality, Greyish!Hiccup is quite aloof and keeps to himself more, quite introverted. Being around the Riders is quite draining, though he hides this as well as he can.

Which, again, doesn't mean he doesn't truly appreciate and love his Riders. He just really feels like he needs to keep up this act and be this persona.

3. Hiding secrets and is actually good at lying.

This is also where I kinda want to fit my "Hiccup's right leg was also severely burned" headcanon into. So I'm going to use that as an example.

Basically, the idea I had was that only Stoick, Gothi, and Gobber know that both of Hiccup's legs were in bad shape with one ending up partially amputated.

Hiccup, believing that "love is conditional" thing, keeps the bad shape of his right leg to himself and keeps that he's keeping it to himself to himself. Gothi has no reason to talk about possible issues with his scars with anyone other than Hiccup. And Gobber doesn't exactly regularly bring them up in conversation either, so it works. And with the limp from his left leg, it's easier to write off issues with his right leg as "oof, just my stump acting up again, you guys!"

Basically, he keeps things about himself secret that he thinks others, not even his friends, don't need to know. Anything that he fears may make him seem weak in the eyes of his village.

He's also a fairly good liar and this is where the "kinda two-faced" part comes in again. Because the Riders and the people of Berk are of the opinion that Hiccup's a bad liar. They just don't know that's a specially crafted lie, too.

4. Kind of a hypocrite.

Still kind and compassionate, however, he insists that his loved ones come to him for stuff no matter how small, including when he finds out the Riders are hiding injuries from him like during RttE. Which is hypocritical of him since he's been hiding things such as a terribly burned leg from them for 3 years already at that point.

And he's still all "feelings are important" while either completely disregarding his own or hiding them.

4. Get them before they get you.

Something he's actually learned from Viggo. He believes Berk will one day turn on him like they have when he was very little and like they have turned on Toothless and the other dragons a few times because of the word and manipulation of one old and bitter man.

This Hiccup takes a little more to Viggo. He still doesn't like Viggo, but he does take his lessons to heart in a different way than canon!Hiccup does. When Viggo teaches him to be a few steps ahead of his foe, Hiccup decides to be a few steps ahead of Berk.

He knows the dragons, save for the few who's bond is strong with their human, will leave Berk if he and Toothless were to ever leave permanently.

Or he rides his hopes on this, at least. He'll play the roles Berk wants him to, he'll be their hero, the one who fixes things, and then one day he'll be their chief for however long that will last. But if Berk ever turns on him again, he plans on leaving and taking the dragons, and all the advantages that comes with having them around, with him.

He's certain that day will come and he’s put a fail-safe in place in case that happens. But until then, he does enjoy the pleasures of living in a human community.

5. Doesn't mind hurting people.

He doesn't prefer it either, but if he has to get his hands dirty, he’s more likely to do it than canon!Hiccup. He's more subtle about it from ages 15-20, but when he has to take over from his father as chief, that becomes just a bit more obvious because he feels like it's more necessary then.

6. Holds grudges more easily.

Whether he realizes it himself or not, at some point, everything revolves around a ploy of some kind. Whether it's which side of his personality he chooses to show, the secrets he keeps, the lies he spreads, at some point, everything comes down to a ploy. And it's purely because he feels like it's necessary.

Long story short, basically just canon Hiccup, except he's a little more hurt and more calculated then he is in canon. It’s a very exhausting existence and in the end it hurts him more than it actually helps.

And boy, won’t the Riders be hurt when they eventually find out.

I got that sorta figured out, too. Hiccup basically gets himself in trouble by stepping into a relationship that eventually becomes physical. Which means it’s only a matter of time until the burn scars the other person (or people) had no idea about are eventually revealed.

b = bed; what’s the sleeping situation like? are there regular sleeping arrangements - does anyone like to sleep alone?

I like to think they each have their own separate bedrooms and then have one larger bedroom with a massive bed for all six. It's a very extravagant idea but that's what fandom is for!!!!!!

Hiccup technically hasn't slept alone since Toothless moved into his house, so he probably enjoys sleeping with someone and having Toothless right there.

I have to assume, especially on the Edge, Astrid prefers to sleep alone. Hiccup, when describing how their huts on the Edge can be whatever they individually want says, "Astrid, you can make yours the most heavily armed bedroom in the known Viking world." She also sleeps with weapons under her pillow.

I could see Snotlout really preferring to sleep next to someone.

t = terms of endearment; nicknames! who’s crazy on them, and who do they make cringe? what’re the go-to’s?

After hearing Astrid and Hiccup call each other "honey" in the Homecoming short, I was like, yeah, the OT6 do this.

Ruffnut also had a list of things for Fishlegs to call her when they were uhhh illegally married? (Their officiator was her brother and he wasn't actually able to do that.) She's probably the one who's crazy on them the most. I think she would do it for mostly the giggles, but probably enjoys it.

I don't think they do shortening of names. Like, Hiccup calls Snotlout and Fishlegs "Lout, Legs" in the first movie during a battle scene, but... that doesn't really become a thing. Though, Tuff once called Astrid "Hoff" in RTTE, and honestly, I vibe so hard.

Debatable who would cringe at nicknames. Tuffnut is completely unlikely because he is impervious to cringe. I think Hiccup would be the most embarrassed by a nickname/pet name. Astrid, too, especially if its something cutesy.

Debatable if "dear" is something they call each other since Viggo referred to Hiccup, in particular, using that language.
