Rook and Bishop Scene 36
Rook and Bishop don't appear in these scenes, but are mentioned so it's worth including.
Tumblr media
Imagine being so influenced by someone that you quit your job and start dressing like him. But he doesn't even know your name.
F in the chat for Rook.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Luke still doesn't trust them. Even after Rook's speech about being a good person.
Poor boy is going to have serious trust issues by the end of the game.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
If Swift knows that Mackintosh escaped, then he knows Rook and Bishop did too. But none of them are important to care about. They're just a couple of troublemakers.
Swift also confirms that they are just "pawns" to the Boss. The exact same phrase Rook used earlier on.
He's probably been called that to his face at some point.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In Targent's eyes, Rook and Mackintosh are fools for abandoning the city. And Bishop is a weakling for going along with them.
But at least we know they are safe. Targent won't even attempt to track them down.
They can have the safe, peaceful lives they deserve.

Rook and Bishop Bonus Episode 6
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Scotland Yard eh?
Well, even if they don't become police officers themselves, there is a certain detective in LMJ who bears a strong resemblance to them both.
It's nice to see the pair so happy and excited for the future. They are their own bosses now. I just hope they didn't forget Mackintosh.
So. This it it. Rook and Bishop's final scene.
Replaying the game and overanalysing their dialogue really reminded me why they're my favourite characters.
I first played Azran Legacy during a very traumatic time in my life and Rook and Bishop are as much of a comfort to my now as they were back then.
It's strange but they mean a lot to me.
Funnily enough, I only created this blog to reblog artwork of Rook and Bishop. Now look at me.
Anyway. To end this long series, here's the artwork in the credits starring Rook and Bishop. I did my best to enhance it so you can really notice the little details.

Now I've finished all of Rook and Bishop's interactions in the game, time for the bonus episode:
Tumblr media
Yeah. "Friends". Sure.
Before I start the episode, here's an interesting detail I noticed.
Chronically, Layton and co travelled the world starting with Phong Gi,then to San Grio, then to Torrido, then to Hoogland and finally Mosinnia.
This is proven because no matter when the player travels to each location, each episode and mystery appears in that order.
Tumblr media
However, watching this episode shows that Rook and Bishop travelled from San Grio, to Torrido, to Mosinnia, to Phong Gi and finally Hoogland.
This is why Layton and co don't encounter Rook and Bishop in Phong Gi, as they were in San Grio.
Once Layton retrieves the egg, he goes to San Grio, where Rook and Bishop still are.
After he retrieves the egg, he goes to Torrido where Rook and Bishop also go.
Next, Layton goes to Hoogland and gets the egg. He doesn't encounter Rook and Bishop as they went to Mosinnia instead.
When Layton goes to Mosinnia, Rook and Bishop are still there, arguing with the locals.
After getting the final egg and realising it's fake, Layton travels back to Kodh to find the location of the real egg.
Meanwhile, Rook and Bishop travel to Phong Gi. However they discover that the egg has already been taken. The same happens in Hoogland.
The pair finally arrive back at the Nest and meet up with Layton again.
The more you know 🌟

Rook and Bishop Scene 31
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After being completely obliterated by Layton's kind words, Rook went to find Bishop. How sweet.
He still looks pretty traumatised. He's probably got a lot of thoughts racing in his head.
Bishop is still adorable as ever. Even when he's threatening people.
Also their height difference is everything.

Rook and Bishop Scene 33
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This it it. Rook's big moment.
There's a lot to unpack here so let's get started:
Bishop automatically follows his partner's lead without thinking. When it finally hits him, he is incredibly worried and confused. But Rook calmly explains his feelings to him. Something he's never done before. And Bishop listens without interruption.
Rook grabs onto his hat when he is nervous. This is a big moment for him. He saw what happened to Mackintosh when he tried escaping.
Rook says this wasn't what he signed up for. This implies that he was one of the few who willingly joined Targent. My personal theory is that he was a mechanic who was forced to become a field agent.
Rook is smiling.
Rook calls Layton "sir". While Bronev was his boss, he didn't have Rook's respect. Layton however earned his respect. Layton also called Rook "sir" throughout the game, so they are equals now.

Rook and Bishop Scene 30
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I always thought Rook's redemption came out of nowhere, but replaying the game shows me that there is a bit of foreshadowing.
Whenever Rook had Layton cornered, he would make threats but never go through with them. In fact, he would often warn them of the danger ahead.
When facing against Old Red, Bishop had his gun but Rook didn't.
If Bishop made threats of violence, Rook often pulled him back.
Rook clearly resents his position and feels unappreciated.
Layton was able to pick up on these things and convince him to let them go.
After Rook's tough persona is destroyed, he completely mentally shuts down. Poor guy.

Rook and Bishop Scene 29
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Emmy is 100% ready to beat Rook into a pulp. I wonder if they have met before.
I find it interesting how Layton doesn't speak to Rook directly in this scene. He talks about him as if he isn't there. That's because he's not talking to Rook. He's talking to the man underneath.
Rook isn't his real name. It's the identity he was given when he joined Targent. Rook is just a persona.
Rook acts like he doesn't care about what's going on. He does what his boss tells him without question. Even when he's helping Mackintosh, he's still pretending that he's doing it for money.
He's been playing this character for so long that he's almost real. But the real man underneath is terrified. He doesn't want to hurt anybody.
Rook is unable to express his feelings, so Layton does it for him.
How nice.

Rook and Bishop Scene 27
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Considering that Mackintosh was in no state to lock the door with a puzzle, I'm certain that it was Rook who did it.
He probably helped Mackintosh into the airship, locked the door with a puzzle, then stood guard with a second puzzle.
If the other agents arrived he would go into his act of "this prize is mine! If you want him then you gotta go through me!"
Hopefully that would give Mackintosh enough time to escape.
However, it's Layton who solves the puzze.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"I have to get to him before the others do."
Rook is in 100% protection mode for this random archeologist.
We don't know how long he's been a Targent agent for, but this is possibly his first experience with shootings and death.
Despite his rough exterior, he is a good man and won't stand down while his friends hunt an innocent man.

Rook and Bishop Scene 34
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rook has canonically enjoyed travelling the world with Bishop. I wonder what fun things they did together?
I love how Bishop immediately decides to leave without a second thought. Throughout the game, he seems to really enjoy working for Targent.
But maybe what he really enjoyed was spending time with one very special person. And it doesn't matter where they are, as long as they're together he's happy.
Layton looks so awkward in this scene. How are you supposed to react when two little gay men decide to run away together?

Rook and Bishop Scene 32
This is the dialogue when you quit and return to the puzzle.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Interesting how it's Bishop's puzzle, but it's Rook who's talking.
He seems pretty desperate for them to leave. Almost like he knows bad things are going to happen.
Even Bishop looks concerned by his outburst.
But when Layton returns to the puzzle Rook is like "Fine. Go die. See if I care."

I have successfully uploaded and analysed every single scene involving Rook and Bishop in Azran Legacy.
It's tagged rook+bishopscreenshots if you want to check it out.
I don't know why I did it but I did.
Now what am I supposed to do......

Rook and Bishop Scene 28
This is Rook's dialogue when you quit and return to his puzzle
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rook is absolutely determined not to let them through.
Despite following them for many months, he still doesn't trust them to go after Mackintosh. Perhaps it's something to do with the fact he just witnessed two of his colleagues assault an innocent man.
Or maybe he wants to rescue Mackintosh himself. Rook aspires to be a good person, so maybe he wants to use this opportunity to prove himself.

Rook and Bishop Bonus Episode 5
Tumblr media
This is it. The scene. The closest thing you'll get to a love confession.
I'm going to ramble so bear with me.
If my previous post is correct, Rook and Bishop have arrived in Hoogland after Layton so the egg is long gone.
That was the last egg. They have completely failed their mission. They didn't even do one thing right. Who knows what punishment is waiting for them at The Nest.
Sensing the bad atmosphere, Bishop tells a joke. Rook just brushes it off and questions why he is so positive.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bishop then talks about his mother who sounds like a sweetheart. It's nice that he brings up his family. Maybe it makes Rook think of his own.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rook wonders what will happen to them when they will get back to the Nest. Since they failed so badly it's unlikely that they will be allowed to work together again. Maybe they won't ever get a chance to talk like this again.
So Rook tells Bishop that he is a good man. This is high praise considering that a good person is what Rook aspires to be.
Tumblr media
🎶I always thought I might be bad, now I'm sure that it's true. Cuz I think you're so good, and I'm nothing like you🎶
Rook also laments that he wishes he was more like his partner.
But then Bishop pulls out the biggest Uno reverse card and compliments Rook back.
Tumblr media
In Bishop's eyes, Rook is the toughest, smartest and most hardworking agent there is. He really admires the man.
All the little things Rook does, like trying to come up with a plan and guiding his partner out of trouble were noticed by Bishop. And he respects him for it, maybe more than the boss.
And then Rook finally admits it. His true feelings.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Translation: "The only reason I can do anything is because I have you."
Me:
Tumblr media
And with all their feelings in the open, the pair board the airship and return home to face the music.

Rook and Bishop Scene 24
(Sorry about Bishop being so blurry. It's hard to take a clear picture when he's jumping around.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"We try, and we try, and we try, but we don't get anywhere fast! No matter how much I run."
"I know it's hard to accept but we've been beaten. And every time we get beaten, we bounce back. That's our style."
Bro... Why am I emotional right now?
Maybe it's Bishop being on the verge of a breakdown and Rook doing his best to comfort him.
Maybe it's the fact that they accept that they've failed but that won't stop them from working hard in the future.
Maybe it's the fact that they've been attacked by literal children.
Or maybe I'm so happy I finally found the pony quote. I knew it existed!

Rook and Bishop Bonus Episode 4
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rook seems to be looking at Bishop a little differently in this scene. Is that a smile?
It's ironic that Bishop wanted the Boss to notice him, but instead got his partner's attention instead.
Bishop: I will do whatever it takes to make the Boss notice me.
Rook: *thinks about all the little things he's noticed about Bishop, from the way he waves his arms about when he's excited, to his soft golden hair, to his smile that could brighten a room.
Rook: Oh no.
