Laverne Emerson and Vera Minenko were local recruits for the Roller Derby Finals, held at the Minneapolis Auditorium starting July 3, 1944. They were members of the 10-skater Minneapolis team. A crowd of more than 6,000 saw Minneapolis take an 18-13 lead over St. Paul on opening night. The two teams were nose to nose for the nearly 3-week competition, but on the last night, St. Paul burst through, winning the championship with a one point lead, 366 to 365.
