i'm outta my head over you (Pt. 2)
Prologue (Pt. 1) | On AO3 here: i'm outta my head over you | the playlist
Pt 2 to my @steddie-week 2023 entry! this is really the 'first day' entry, but pt. 1 is the prologue :P
today's prompt is: pining
Tumblr media
Eddie takes his time after Robin leaves. Finishing the cigarette she made him put out and doing his best to focus on the tune he was expirimenting with on his acoustic before he was interrupted. The curiosity gets the best of him though (of course) and he sets his guitar back down, picking up the papers Robin had handed to him.
He starts to read what he had (correctly) thought was a tracklist.
'Heartbeat? Okay, so it's a sappy love playlist.' He thinks to himself. "The hell's that got to do with me?" he asks aloud to no one.
There's a slightly lighter colored scrawl of "Dustin doctor FRIDAY at 3" written into the top margin of this scanned page, like someone had used a different color pen than the rest of the book, and continuing on--
Oh fuck.
Oh shit.
Eddie reads the first sentence, and he suddenly feels like he's going into cardiac arrest.

Looking back, Steve counts himself insanely lucky that it was Nancy he was dating when he first really noticed Eddie Munson.
Of course, he’d noticed the older boy before, it was hard not to, but the first time he really looked at him, really saw him…he wanted to throw up.
He was actually really pretty. Wait, can a guy be pretty? It doesn’t matter. Eddie is.
His hair is dark and curly, some curls licking down his face and swirling over his cheekbones, some curling up behind his ears. If it was straight, his hair would definitely look like an overgrown bowlcut. Fuck, it looked soft.
Eddie’s a year above him, a Senior, so it kind of makes sense that he’s a bit broader than Steve is..wait, is he? Or is it just that vest he’s wearing, making him look bigger…
His eyes are dark, brows furrowed, lips yanked back in a snarl–oh yeah, he was in the middle of telling someone off. That’s what called Steve’s attention to him.
“Steve? Are you okay?”
He wrenches his eyes from the side of Eddie’s face to look down at Nancy. He locks eyes with her and was when he noticed how hard his heart was beating.
That, and the fact her eyes were the wrong color.
‘Wrong color?? The hell? They’re blue, they’ve always been blue.’
“Yeah, yeah, I’m fine Nance.” Steve looks back up at Eddie. “He’s kinda scary isn’t he. Should I do something?”
“Steve–”
He doesn’t wait for her answer, and approaches Eddie and whoever it is that earned his tirade.
Steve pushes through the gathered crowd, right next to Eddie’s victim. “What’s happening here, guys?” Steve’s snarky ‘King Steve’ smile appears easily on his face, then he notices who he came in next to. “Tommy? What’re you doing man?”
“Oh you know, the usual.” Tommy’s grin makes Steve sick to his stomach. He looks away, down to the empty plastic fountain pop in his hand.
“The usual, huh?” Steve scoffs, turning to Eddie.
Mistake. Mistake!
Eddie’s dark eyes lock with his and Steve feels weak in the knees ‘ What the hell?? ’
“Welcome to the show, my liege!” Eddie bows low, and Steve sees the short kid that was hiding behind him. Must be a freshman, huge, panicked eyes stare at him under a mass of poofy curly hair (lighter than Eddie’s). An oversized red plaid flannel is resting on his shoulders, and a large dark stain coats his shirt beneath. Ah.
Eddie straightens, and the little freshman is obscured again. That’s when he realizes the denim vest Eddie is wearing is all he’s wearing above the waist. Steve’s stomach twists pleasantly at the sight of Eddie’s pale skin. ‘ What. The. Fuck. Don’t turn red, look away, look away!! ’
Steve locks eyes with Eddie once again, and it’s not much better. Fuck, those eyes…
What the hell is happening to him?? His heart’s beating like crazy. He glances over, and Nancy and her ginger friend with the glasses are watching, twin looks of panic and disgust on their faces.
“Munson here was just introducing me to one of our new little friends!” Tommy’s tone makes Steve’s stomach twist unpleasantly.
“Really Tommy, a freshman? How cliché can you get? Leave the kid alone, man.”
“Really Dude?” Tommy mocks, “What’s it to you? That girl’s making you slip, man.”
It’s not entirely false; it is true that Nancy’s made it easier to get out from behind his King Steve self more often than not, but there was always a part of him that wanted to be better.
Steve just shrugs. “No more messing with the freshmen, Tommy. Show’s over, assholes, get out of here!” he yells over the crowd as he turns his back on his friend’s(?) sputtering face. Facing Eddie again, he asks, “Sorry, Munson, your friend okay?”
Ugh. Even he cringes inwardly at how insincere that sounded. How’d that come out so wrong?
Eddie just gives him a look, and shakes his head, “C’mon Gareth,” he wraps a long arm around the kid behind him while still shielding him from view. “Our benevolent ruler has allowed us to leave unharmed; let’s abscond before he changes his mind.” Eddie shoots Steve another glare over his shoulder and disappears into the dispersing crowd of students.
Nancy and her friend stay behind. Barb. Her name is Barb.
Barb says something to Nancy, and when she nods in return, Barb leaves for her next class.
Nancy moves to step up to his side again, but he’s whirled around and Tommy’s in his face.
“What the fuck is your deal, Harrington?”
Steve shoves him back, “I already fuckin’ told you. Leave the freshmen alone.”
It’s not a lot, he knows Tommy’s going to over-correct and start berating the sophomore class relentlessly, but that kid looked so scared.. Fuck, he’s a coward.
“You’re going soft, Harrington.” Tommy shoulder checks him as he walks past him and past Nancy, who gives him a wide berth.
“Sorry, Nance.” he lets out a breath he didn’t know he was holding.
She levels him with a look. “What was with you and that senior?”
“Nothing, nothing!” he holds his hands up in surrender.
The look on her face says she doesn’t believe him.
Not that much longer after that, she knows he wasn’t telling the truth. After getting beaten up by Jonathan Byers, Barb going missing from his backyard, almost dying…his whole world being turned upside-down (hah), he deserves to tell someone the truth about his not crush on Eddie Munson…
He asks her “Munson’s pretty right? I mean, for a guy.”
“Do you think he’s pretty, Steve?” she asks in lieu of a response, soft tone and smile letting him know he’s okay to talk to her about it.
His stomach twists, he wants to throw up. He still really likes Nancy, still likes girls, why does he feel all gooey about a guy ? About Eddie ?
“I don’t know, Steve.” She says. Oh shit, he said that out loud. “But it’s okay that you do, you know. I won’t see you any differently.”
The knot in his stomach loosens slightly.
She looks down at her hands where they’re folded in her lap. “It’d be hypocritical of me if I did.”
Steve hugs her then. They stay together, they’re just fine…until they’re not.
They drift apart after that. They hang on for a while, they do care for each other afterall, but everything falls apart at that damn Halloween party.
Steve doesn’t blame her, not fully. Especially when he’s been not so subtly mooning after someone else (Nancy smiles knowingly at him every time she catches him staring at Eddie across the hall or across the cafeteria), and especially not after as much as she’s had to drink.
She’s right to call their relationship bullshit, even if it stings, because it kinda was. Him pining hopelessly after some guy, but still desperately trying to hold onto what he thinks he needs to do while doing so.
Trying to hold onto the future that he’s expected to have. A wife, a house with a picket fence, two kids. All that.
Nancy starts dating Jonathan, and Steve’s happy for them, really, but even he doesn’t know how okay he actually is until he’s jumped in Reefer Rick’s boathouse.
There’s a forearm across his chest, an elbow digging into his right shoulder, a hip pressed to his own, another face only inches away, and he’s head over fucking heels.
Those dark eyes that haunted him in the halls of Hawkins High are suddenly so close he can see just how rich a brown they really are, even around the sheer panic in their forefront.
The dark curls that Steve wanted to wrap around his fingers three years ago are longer, more full, down to Eddie’s shoulders now, though dirty and matted in some places from his time on the run.
If there wasn’t a broken glass bottle pressed to his neck right now, he’d be fully tempted to just plant one on the other man. Instead, Steve stays perfectly still, echoing anything Dustin says that might get the sharp glass away from his jugular.
Eddie’s eventually convinced to let Steve go, but somehow keeps hold of his heart. Metaphorically wrenching it from Steve’s chest and tucking it away into an inner pocket of his leather jacket.
‘This is the literal worst time for this shit, Harrington, pull yourself together.’ Steve chides himself as he catches his breath. ‘Save him. Get him out of this first, THEN you can worry about your feelings for him.’
Awesome, great plan.

---------------
Ok.
Yep.
This is a thing that is happening to him today.
The tape in his hand, the messy scrawled notes that were so lovingly delivered to him, were made by Steve "The Hair" Harrington about him, Eddie "The Freak" Munson.
He must've died back there in the upside down. This is not real.
How has Steve been pining for him for that long? Especially if that first entry is true, all the way back when now-about-to-go-into-Senior-year Gareth had just started at Hawkins High??
Eddie stops himself from reading the rest of Steve's (Steve's!!) handwriting to dash inside to the phone. The rest of this deserves to be read with the tape playing anyway.
First things first: "Robin! Birdie, Buckley, best woman in the world!" he yells, vibrating where he stands with the phone against his ear.
"Munson. To what do I owe the pleasure?" she asks, infuriatingly nonchalant.
"You know damn well why I'm calling. This is Steve's tape?" He's only slightly embarrassed by the anxious squeak that comes out of him when he says Steve's name.
"I don't know what you're talking about." Robin says, then promptly hangs up on him.

Chapter 12 is here!
Rating: teen and up
Chapter Summary: 11 pages of Salon Days finally making an appearance and Steve indoctrinating as many children he can into sports fans
Fic Summary:
In late January, 1984, Robin saw Steve Harrington stand stock still in the middle of the sidewalk, staring at a house with twinkling Christmas lights. She thought it was weird, but wasn’t going to comment and was about to walk around him when she realized his hands were shaking and repeatedly clenching and unclenching. And, because Robin could never leave well enough alone, she placed a hand on his shoulder.
Or, Robin and Steve meet post season 1 and begin their friendship early, despite Robin's confusion at how exactly it happened.

love songs
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Robin Buckley x fem reader
Summary: You’ve liked Robin since a year and it’s time to confess
A/N: It’s like 1am while I’m writing this so I hope it makes sense, all I can say is I love Robin and I think mixtapes are very cool. That’s it thanks for listening.
Robin Buckley, she was smart, funny, pretty and knew how to make anyone smile. She had this incredible charm, that made you want to listen to her forever. You didn’t talk to her that often, what would you even say? Hey I’m Y/n and I am totally in love with you since I’ve sawn you last year in algebra!? Yeah definitely not. But you had to do something, your friends where getting annoyed at how you’d drool over her, whenever she laughed, or talked, or practically just existed. Also you didn’t want anyone to tell her, before you got the chance, cause that would be even more embarrassing. But just telling her was a risk at itself, you where both girls and what if she rejected you? You’d most likely feel worse than before. “Make her something or buy her something that could just be a friendly gesture, but she could also get your actual meaning.” Your friend suggested. “I don’t know what kind of books she likes, maybe she doesn’t like them at all.” “Ok but music? Everyone likes music.” “To impersonal!” “Than I guess your a lost case, doomed to be lonely forever cause your to scared to even make the tiniest move.” You groaned in annoyance at the truth of her worlds. “Shut up and get out of my car.” She giggled while pressing a kiss to your cheek “Sure ignore the truth. See ya tomorrow!” She yelled while running up to her dads house.
A few minutes later you arrived at your place and took out the mixtape, your friend had made you, to put it back into its case. While doing so you got an idea, exited you got out the car and sprinted inside the house to call your friend. “ She picked up a bit confused. “Get your stuff ready we’ll make a mixtape tonight!” Running up to your room you packed all the cassettes you had into a bag and wrote a quick note to your parents, informing them that you’d stay the night at Ally’s. Than you got back to the car and drove to her.
She was thrilled to make mixtapes, Al loved them she’d do them all day if she could and took it very serious. First you picked out all the songs you wanted on the tape, than you’d made an order and lastly you had to put it all together. The whole process was finished at 3 am and to say you where exhausted was an underestimation. “Ok but what do I write on the card?” “Write whatever comes to your mind, I can’t do that for you too.” Annoyed you rolled you eyes, but settled for a short note on the inside.
The next day you started to overthink everything, was it to obvious? Will she like it and understand what you mean? Ally had to basically push you into the video store she worked at. And when you where inside you couldn’t go back. “Oh hey y/n, I’ve never seen you here before? What you looking for?” Nervously you fiddeled with the small case “Nothing actually but I… I guess I wanted to give this to you and I- I hope you like it.” You almost threw the tape onto the counter and immediately fled.
“Who was that?” Steve yelled from the back of the store. “Y/n was here, the girl out of algebra.” “Hot y/n?! Like y/n you talked about every other-“ “God shut up! Yes and she gave me this.” “A mixtape. Uh exiting let’s listen!” Robin looked round the store but it was empty, no one was there. The two of them got into Steve’s car and put the tape in. “Those are almost all love songs or could be interpreted as one, did she write anything?” A blush reaching robins face while reading the message “she wrote ‘These made me think of you ~y/n’ what do you think that means?” Steve grinned “That Robin means, y/n likes you.”

A Mixtape For Your Thoughts
This is a Steddie fic I'm writing, It's not great but its got three chapters so far. I thought I would post it here and link the Ao3. There is also a playlist below this post and its on Spotify. Its under this title under the username TheGroovyGirl
The Start Of Mixtape Madness
Steve was sitting behind the counter at the Family Video checking in tapes when the bell above the door rang signaling a customer had entered “Hi welcome to family..” was all he got to say before one Eddie Munson interrupted him. Watching him he strolled in and up to the counter, this had been going on for a while now, meaning ever since everything went down and Eddie's name had been cleared and he graduated, he had been accepted into the tight knit group who shared the horrors of what laid beneath Hawkins. This acceptance had come with him now showing up to the Family Video to what seemed to Steve distract from his boredom when no one better was around. He had seen the way Eddie had fallen into place with the group and it made him happy but it also felt like a threat of losing what he considered his family even if Eddie was part of that. Thoughts aside, this had to have been the fifth time he had shown up either after work or just bored.
“Hey Harrington” was Eddie's interruption to Steve's well versed greeting. Walking up to the counter he leaned on it being nosy of what Steve was doing. Looking at him, he could tell he was confused on why he was there because it was definitely not for movies. Since everything, Eddie had been studying Steve, the way he acted around his friends, from this he learned that Steve could hide very well but underlying emotions always cracked the surface with him. From that it came to his attention that no one other than Robin may have caught onto this. Other things he had noticed is how touchy he was with everyone except himself, it was always a hand placed on a kids shoulder, Robin tucked under or hanging from him or fuses over collars of shirt but he was always tactile. He himself did not want to admit how it set a jealous flame off but it did, and maybe it had something to do with the growing crush he had on Steve that he was constantly pushing out of his mind. The growing friendship with Robin had also helped Eddie in his study, she had said that though Steve had all of them he had no “guy friends” and that Eddie should try to be his friend as they were the only other guys their age that they talked to. That was kind of a slap in the face to him but nonetheless true, it made sense though he couldn’t share anything that had happened to him with others so why not stick with the ones that went through it to.She had also said whether he liked it or not Steve had put him on his list of people he would protect. Though insisting this wasn't true, Robin had denied and said that Steve was more than what people thought and once you went through shit with him he always had your back. From that Eddie had thought about how he found out Steve was “actually a good dude” and decided to try to wiggle his way into friendship with Steve. There was no other reason he told himself. That’s how he found himself visiting the Family video.
“Hey Eddie” was all he said, placing a tape down and giving his attention to the curly headed man leaning on the counter.
“Have you seen Dustin around, he keeps pestering me about having a movie night with the whole gang.” Eddie said nonchalantly, he really had nothing better to do or ask even though he was the one that had come into the store.
“Um no, but he has also been non stop asking me about that. You know one day I'm just going to go crazy from him, he is so demanding sometimes.” Steve said with no real bite behind it. Eddie huffed a laugh at that.
“He is going to make you go gray with how much he asks and you nag at him” Eddie laughed. Steve pretended to look shocked and put his hand near his hair like he was trying to protect it.
“That's not funny Munson, I don't have a lot but I have my hair.” Steve pouted playing along. “So is that all you came in to ask about or am I just a midday boredom distraction?” he said while drumming his hands on the counter.
Eddie gasped being dramatic “Stevie no, you've driven a stake through my heart.” He was now leaning back gripping the counter as he slid down “I’ll never recover!” Steve was now looking over at him on the floor, a grin he was trying to hide plastered on his face. “Um actually I think I'm okay.” he said standing up invading Steve's personal space just a bit. “You want to go to the diner after your shift is done? Unless you have other things to do?” he babbled fidgeting in place.
Biting his bottom lip where it had split open so many times before he stared at Eddie for a second then said  “Um sure, I get off in about fifteen minutes actually.” Eddie distracted himself by looking at movies while Steve finished his shift. As soon as Keith arrived Steve hurried to the back room to clock out and when he emerged Eddie was standing near the door to leave both not really wanting much interaction with Keith, he didn’t particularly like Steve but dealt with him and was still scared of Eddie like the rest of the place they called home.
“All just follow you there” Steve said walking through the door and to the beemer.
Following him out and to the van Eddie gave an “okay” and hopped in. He looked over at the beemer and the boy inside a little longer than he should. Quit that, it will never happen. Pulling out onto the road like a maniac he drove off the burgundy beemer trailing behind.
“He is gonna get himself killed” Steve sighed watching as the van in front of him race off. In the few minutes he had to himself in the car his mind wandered, he really did want to be Eddie’s friend there was this little zap to his system whenever he showed up, but he pushed it down. The kids really liked him and Robin had fallen into place just as she had with Steve but one thing he didn’t know how to navigate was the space between them. He couldn’t lie, he was always touching people, with no parents around he had lacked that and had latched onto the people he had. It was most evident with Robin who just hung off him or was holding his hand or messing with him in some way and he didn’t like to admit it but he mothered the kids, now really teens, as much as he argued with them. Now he didn’t know how to initiate that with Eddie but he wanted to but it was confusing and made his brain hurt so he stopped thinking. Now in the parking lot he got out and watched Eddie as he went to the door.
Opening the door for Steve he put on the dramatics, with a flourish he said “My good sir”. With a huff of a laugh from Steve he followed behind, he went straight for the corner booth and sat with his back to the wall. This was something Eddie had noticed, everywhere they went whether in a group or now he was finding out alone, Steve was always scanning and watching like something was going to pop out and attack. He didn’t blame him for this obviously with all that had happened but he also wasn’t sure Steve knew he was doing it. Before he could say anything the waitress came to take there drink orders, as soon as she saw Steve her eyes lit up then hers locked with Eddie’s and for a split second it was blank then scared.
Not letting a second waste Steve piped up “Are you gonna ask what we want to drink or just stare at my friend.” It was said flatly and no threat behind it but it shocked the girl into motion. She took their drink orders and left. “Sorry about that, I don’t like being rude but I also can’t sit here while she was looking at you like that.” He huffed, face tinting pink he picked at the menu trying to avoid Eddie’s face. She was quick to bring the drinks back and taking their orders.
“Thanks, for saying something. But enough about that, she can go suck it. Done anything exciting since summer started?” He asked
“Umm not really, unless you count Robin dragging me around to the thrift stores while you aren’t around. Don’t get me wrong I love Rob but there are only so many times I want to go shopping with her.” He exclaimed
The reply came out giggling “I was gonna argue with you but honestly, going shopping with Robin sounds like a nightmare. I can just see it, I mean I get distracted but I know she does too but like she would want to dress you up and all that.”
Putting his hands over his face Steve was trying to hide the blush creeping up.
Like a light bulb going off leaning back feet going forward into Steve’s space Eddie was laughing “she did that didn’t she, oh I’m definitely going shopping with you next time.
Looking at him he assured “ You say that now but you’ll be subjected to it, I promise you, there is no stopping her once she has started.”
The food was coming and Eddie had returned to an upright position but his feet were still bracketing one of Steve’s. This was one way he had decided to test the waters of touch with Steve.
That little flutter happened when Eddie didn’t move his feet. The only sound between them was eating, he hadn't realized how hungry he was before this. Again his mind wandered, this time about Eddie and his music, just by looking at him you could tell it was important and he played the guitar. “So how long have you been playing the guitar?” He asked
Looking surprised at the sudden question he answered “since middle school, Wayne saved up and got me an acoustic guitar one Christmas. I was already starting to obsess over music so that kind of just blew it out of the water.” He was grinning, talking about music always made him smile.
“That’s cool, so when did you get the electric guitar?” He was trying to keep the conversation going.
Looking up like he was grabbing information from his brain he replied “about 2 years ago, that I had to save up for myself.” Taking another bite and speaking with his mouth full he said “Probably should have not gotten the money like I did… if you know what I mean.”
“Gotta do what you gotta do… right.” Steve defended his actions
“Why are you asking Stevie, you want to come see me play?” He tapped him in the ankle when saying this. At that moment he blank stared at Eddie for a moment, the nickname rolling around his head and the implication of other things from the tone in which this was said. It was funny, that never happened when Robin called him that.
Trying to play it cool he sputtered “ No, I mean yeah that would be cool, but I have been playing again for a little while and I don’t know anyone else who does.” His face felt hot.
It was Eddie’s turn to blank stare, shocked at what had just been said “ You Steve Harrington play the guitar… an instrument… you know you're full of surprises. I don’t particularly like the music you listen to but I certainly respect fellow musicians.”
“Okay for one: lots of people play instruments and two: how do you know you won’t like the music I listen to? I don’t know really much about your music you like but I would give it a try.” He argued back.
“We’ll, from getting to know you a little bit. I think you're a top 40s guy. Also, is that a challenge, big boy, cause I’ll make you a tape to see how much you like my music.” He was leaning forward arms on the table being his dramatic self, some people were peeking at the two.
“Okay yeah I do like the top 40s but I also have some stuff I don’t think you have ever heard of even if it is not your taste in music. Yes, how about we each make a tape with 12 songs. They're not really winning anything but I don’t care, I'll prove you like some of my music.” He was leaning into the table now, both their eyes locked on each other. And again that spark happened in his stomach. He relaxed again in his seat trying to calm whatever unnamed emotion was coming up.
Still leaning on the table Eddie said” you gotta deal. Also back to you playing guitar how long have you played? You could have told me sooner. I feel like that is a cool thing to have in common with someone.”
With a sigh “ So when I was little my parents kind of forced me to take lessons, they said it would make a well rounded person, and you know that’s a great privilege I had but if you're not into it then you don’t really want to do it. For like three years I did it and it was all classical as soon as they let me stop I did, but every once in a while I would pick it up and now I kinda found I like it, if I’m playing things I like.” There was a lot of underlying sadness to this statement and to Eddie it highlighted what everyone never talked about which was that Steve’s parents seem to be a topic he strayed away from.
With this new information the need to hear Steve’s playing grew. “ I gotta hear you play now or at least at some point and you can see what I do. It would be fun!”
With a shrug “Maybe… I’ve never played in front of someone.”
He didn’t push it any further, sensing some underlying emotion to that statement. “Okay, but we still gotta make the tapes!” Steve nodded to that, in truth he already had ideas running through his head.
Finishing up they paid and walked back out into the early summer heat. The days had gotten longer which was nice, less darkness for the unknown to lurk. The Beemer was parked closer so Steve stopped by his door “alright I’ll see you around Ed.”
Walking backwards and squinting “ okay Stevie see you soon.”
Getting into the car Steve waved as he started it and backed it out. He watched the van through his rear view mirror until it faded off in the other direction. All he knew now was Robin was getting a call, to discuss today's events.

Steve has been listening to the same tape over and over again for the last month.
Robin realizes it's the same one when they hang at Steve’s one day. They mean to watch a movie or something but end up in his room (Robin laying across his bed on her back reading a magazine and Steve hunched over his desk writing something in that little journal he’s been carrying around lately), when she starts listening a bit closer to the tape Steve has playing.
“Did you really take this out of your car with you?” It has to be the same one. Must’ve grabbed it on his way out of the car. She always gets out before him.
Steve his face turns pink. “..No.”
“What’s the deal with this tape?” she sits up and takes in his flustered face. “Oh my god!” She gasps, “Someone made this for you didn’t they? Who is it? Is it someone I know?”
He scoffs. “Oh yeah. You know them very well.”
“Oh. My. God. Did Nancy give it to you?”
“What? No! You think Nancy Wheeler would make me a mixtape ?”
“Well, I would say one of the kids but these are all cheesy love songs, so not them, and I’m guessing it wasn’t one of the girls you’ve managed to score a single date with either. If it was one of them they’d definitely be a stalker and you wouldn’t be listening to this so much.”
“Also the fact that I agreed it was someone you know very well.”
“Was it Jonathan? Or Eddie maybe? Or–” she was going to continue but stopped at how bright red his face becomes “Eddie??”
“No. …No, it wasn’t Eddie who made it for me.”
“Are you sure, cause your super red faces says otherwi–”
“I made it for Eddie.”
Robin has no words. Words do not exist right now. Her brain is flatlining at the implications this brings up about her platonic soulmate.
“Steve–”
“I made it for Eddie, but he’s never gonna know. Got it?” He pushes an accusatory finger into her face and very pointedly goes back to scrawling in his journal.
Robin lets him alone for a few moments before: “Eddie, huh?”
Steve sighs “Yeah. Eddie.”
“So is it just Eddie? Or is it all guys maybe?”
“Uhm..” He rubs the back of his head, still looking down at his journal. He for sure just got pen marks all over his scalp. “I think it's guys in general? Maybe? There've been other guys I’ve thought about before…at least a little bit in…that way. But it was Eddie that made me realize it for sure.”
He looks up at Robin from beneath his lashes, seeming to be worried about her reaction to that.
“Oh Dingus,” She scoots to the edge of his mattress and folds him into her arms, a rare hug, even for the two of them. “Thanks for telling me.” Robin whispers into his hair, and Steve lets the tension from his shoulders go.
They embrace for a bit longer, and when she lets Steve go, “So tell me about this mixtape.”
“It’s actually only half a mixtape. I’ve only filled up one side.”
“Are you going to fill up the B side?”
Steve shrugs, eyes going back to the vague shape he’s drawing over again in his notebook. “If I find more songs.”
“More songs…?” Robin trails off for him to continue.
“....more songs that remind me of him.”
“Eww grody!” Robin smiles, shaking herself as if trying to shake off Steve’s affection. “Dingus, this is adorable, why these songs? If you fill it up, are you going to give it to hi–”
“No! Nonononono, he is never ever going to see this tape, okay?”
“Okay, okay, I got it.” she puts her hands up in surrender.
He goes back to his book and she drops the topic. For about half a minute.
“So why these songs? Besides you being hopelessly in love with him.”
Steve sighs, but says nothing.
“Oh shit, you didn’t even deny it. You are in love with him!”
Again, he says nothing. Just keeps looking down at his notebook. She can see his face is still red in embarrassment. After a breath, he sighs, and hands over the notebook.
There’s messy scrawl all over the pages it was open to and the two pages before. It looks like the pages started as a tracklist, but were soon covered in little doodles and notes for other things as well. ‘Dustin doctor FRIDAY at 3’ is hastily written in next to ‘Heartbeat - Wham!’. There’s a little bat (the animal) drawn next to ‘eddie said ozzy’ and the song title ‘Runnin’ with the Devil - Van Halen’.
“These are the songs.” Steve says, just barely over a whisper. “And why.”
“Why what?”
“Why they make me think of him.”
Robin reads a couple of the entries, and they are sickeningly sweet. Some have details so personal even she hadn’t known them.
“Steve, this is–”
“Weird? Creepy? Stalker-ish?” Steve says bitterly and starts to curl in on himself, emotionally as well as physically.
“Hey, no, none of that..” Robin closes and drops the notebook on the bed and reaches forward to pull Steve back out of his shell. She’s only somewhat successful, planting her hands on either side of his face and getting him to look up at her.
“I was going to say that this is really sweet. People make mixtapes for the people they like all the time right? So what’s creepy about you doing it?”
“One: It’s me, a guy , making one for another guy. And two: people don’t usually obsessively write about why they added the songs.”
“Then that’s just a bonus.” Robin states matter-of-factly. “If you ever do give this to Eddie, he’ll actually know how you feel about him, and not just guess.”
“Yeah, well,” Steve sits up, removing his face from her grasp, “He’s not ever going to see it, so it doesn’t really matter.”
“You’re not going to give it to him? Ever?”
“Nope. Guy crushing on another guy that probably doesn’t feel the same way, remember?” He says, pointing at himself then glaring down at his notebook like it offended him personally. "Just drop it, okay Robin?"
So she does. For now.
-----
Robin is at her wits end.
Her whole existence is half Steve mooning over Eddie, and half Eddie mooning over Steve.
The pining from both sides is driving her absolutely insane.
“You’re driving me crazy, Eddie. Please just tell him how you feel, I can’t deal with this much longer.” she tells him one day at lunch, murmuring close to him over the roar of the students around them.
Lucky Eddie; he survived hell and was recently expected back at school to graduate.
“You can’t keep secrets, birdie?” he mumbles around a pretzel.
She almost scoffs, but stops herself at the last second.
“Not from Steve I can’t! ! He’s my best friend, my one and only soulmate, the Dingus to your Doofus. I tell him everything and knowing you like him when he–when you could just tell him yourself is driving me batty!” Nice save she tells herself.
Eddie doesn’t notice the slip anyway, already shaking his head at her.
“Just drop it Robin, even if he finds out I’m gay and is cool about it, doesn’t mean that Steeeeeve Harrington would ever be into Eddie the freak.”
The after-lunch bell rings at the same time he stands, slumping off out of the cafeteria and into the hall without a spare glance backward.
“Okay that’s it. I’m done.” She stands, determined.
“Done with what?” Dustin asks, also standing to throw his tray away.
“Men.”
-----
Robin’s able to enact her scheme not long after that.
Steve is leaving with his parents on a trip (for once) and will be gone for a few days.
“Ew your mom is bringing you along now too to try and keep your dad from having an affair? What’s she gonna do, leave you in the room the whole time?”
“Ha ha ha.” he rolls his eyes, sarcasm dripping from every ‘Ha’. “I’m meeting with them and my grandparents about my trust fund and going over their will with them both.”
“Ugh, I always forget you’re a snobby trust fund baby.”
“Thanks, Rob. Makes me feel fantastic when you put it like that.”
“You know what I mean.”
“I do?”
“Whatever, just tell me what you want me to do while you’re gone.”
“Well, Eddie’s taking the kids since you just started driving,”
“When’d you and Eddie get illegally married and then almost just as illegally divorced?? You sound like you’re talking about a custody agreement.”
Steve’s face turns pink, probably at the thought of being married to that Doofus. Ugh, he’s so in love it hurts. Truly.
“Shut up, Robin.” he shakes his head at her. “Anyway! He’s got their schedule covered and if he doesn’t, he’ll never hear the end of it from Henderson. You’ve just gotta watch the house, ‘kay?”
“Got it, water the kitchen, make sure the yard stays clean…”
Steve smiles fondly at her “Yeah, you got it.”
--
As soon as she knows Steve is in the air (really, AS. SOON.), she takes Steve's songbook and tape to the library.
She pays the ridiculous cost of $0.25 for them to copy both page spreads, and immediately drives to the Forest Hills trailer park.
Eddie is on his porch with a cigarette hanging out one corner of his mouth, his acoustic guitar on his lap.
“I’m coming up, Munson, you better put out that cigarette!” she yells out her window at him as she parks.
“Yeah, yeah, waste all my smokes, why don’t I?” he grumbles to himself, but stubs it out all the same.
“Put the guitar down too, I need your full attention for this.” she says, coming up the two steps onto the porch and stopping in front of him.
He looks at her incredulously, but puts it down, leaning the guitar against the arm of the loveseat.
“Okay, you’ve got my full attention.” he spreads his arms out wide. “What is it, Birdie?”
“You are to take what I give you, and not breathe a word about it to Anyone. Else. You hear me?”
“Oohhkay? You’re freaking me out, Rob.”
“You’re Uncle’s working tonight right?”
“Yeah..?
“Take this and listen to side A.” she hands over the tape and he eyes it suspiciously, turning it over in his hand. “You’ll want these too.”
Eddie takes the offered papers and unfolds them. “Is this a tracklist?”
“It might be,” Robin shrugs and turns back to her car. “Steve will be back in three days. I have an excuse ready for why the tape’s gone if it takes you longer than that, but I’d rather not have to use it.” she calls over her shoulder.
“What does this shit have to do with Steve?”
She’s at her car now, and gives him a look over the top. “You’ll figure it out Eddie.”

For my favourite matchmaker, happy birthday @thelastwalkingsoul
If there's a world where time travel was possible Robin Buckley wishes she was in it.
Not to stop the Upside Down or save lives no she wishes she could go back in time and help Eddie Munson graduate so she didn't have to watch him make heart eyes over the Family Video shelves at one Steve Harrington.
Steve hasn't even noticed Eddie has been in the store for the last ten minutes. He's had his headphones on and has restacked the candy bar five times since the day has had a grand total of zero customers.
Finally, against her wishes, Eddie approaches the desk, the tape in his hand has a lot more teen heartthrobs and a lot less gore then he usually rents. The gooey lovesick expression is still plastered over his face. Steve still stacks the candy at snail pace, his head bobbing along to whatever is playing, probably the mixtape Eddie gave him last week.
"Sixteen candles, interesting choice, Munson."
The metalhead just sighs, his eyes still glued to Steve.
"Oi doofus, making goo goo eyes at dingus."
She slaps his arm which thankfully breaks his focus, Eddie doesn't even look sorry.
"Oh Birdie! Hey, do you think Steve would like this one?"
"You're not even going to watch it and you know it."
She wheeled the chair over to Steve giving his arm the same slapping treatment, "Steve your boyfriend wants to know if you'd like Sixteen Candles playing while you make out."
A dopey expression falls over Steve's face as he takes his headphones off and looks over at Eddie who shares the same dumb look.
"Aw Eds we could've had The Thing playing and I'd still want to kiss you," Steve says wandering over to him, leaning over the counter.
"Well I got to pick last time sweetheart it's only fair."
Steve quickly rings it up and puts his own cash in the till, "Well only fair that I pay then, sunshine"
"Baby you treat me too well, I'll buy us dinner on the way over."
"I'll show you how well I can treat you late-"
"STOP! I don't want to hear about you two bumping butts or anymore pet names, I'm melting away here."
"Aw Robs, don't worry you're still my snookums," Steve says a mischievous look in his eye as he walks over and squishes her cheeks together.
"Birdie, our lesbian love, our queen, you can pick our next make out movie so you don't feel left out."
"Ah!" Robin yelled and she decided now was the perfect time for her break leaving the two lovers to giggle and return to their heart eyes.
Maybe she didn't need time travel, as long as Steve kept that smile on his face, Robin was happy too.
