Whenever Jaskier gets drunk and upset with Geralt, he inevitably attempts to run away with Roach.

Yet, this scheme invariably fails, as Roach, being the remarkable horse she is, dutifully returns Jaskier to where Geralt is patiently waiting to tuck the inebriated bard into bed.

I need more fics from Roach's perspective though because like

According to the Netflix timeline, the Blaviken Incident is in 1231 and "now" in canon is 1265. That's thirty-four years.

The average lifespan of a horse is around thirty years, but it's not unheard of for one to reach fourty.

I like to think that all that time, it's the same Roach.

Give me Roach who was born and bred at Kaer Morhen. Training her is horse girl Geralt's winter project one year. Give me Roach who pins her ears and bites at humans because she's only used to Witchers and people smell strange and make too much noise and treat Geralt badly, so they look like a threat to her.

Give me Roach who takes being a Witcher's horse as seriously as Geralt takes being a Witcher. Roach whose mother taught her as a filly that looking after her Witcher is her capital-P Purpose. So that's what she does, all those years. When he's lonely, she comforts him. When he's injured, she carries him to safety. When he's exhausted, she watches over him while he sleeps and warns him if there's danger. They are a herd of two, and she adores him.

Give me Roach who stamps and nips at Jaskier, because he's loud and oblivious and he keeps trying to pet her, and she doesn't understand why Geralt isn't chasing him away when every monster in a five mile radius can now hear them coming. Roach who watches Jaskier run into the stench of fear and pain and monster to retrieve Geralt when he's too injured or exhausted to find his own way back to camp, watches him learn how to heal Geralt and comfort him and love him and make him laugh. Roach who nickers at Jaskier and accepts pets and apples because he helps her do her job. They look after their Witcher together.

Roach whose herd of two becomes a herd of three.

(And then a herd of four, but the foal is Geralt's, and so young to be so sad. Roach doesn't mind letting Ciri quietly cry into her neck occasionally, or chewing the end of her braid to make her giggle)
