The City of Winnipeg and its largest union say they're willing to work out a deal to broaden the definition of an essential city worker — and in effect, determine who won't have the right to strike.
On Tuesday, city council's executive policy committee voted unanimously to put off a plan to ask the provincial government to legislate a broader definition of an essential municipal worker.
Right now, only Winnipeg police, paramedics and firefighters are considered essential and do not have the right to strike.

Universities are docking lecturers’ entire pay for not marking a few exams
“On 20 April, a national marking and assessment boycott began at 145 universities as part of a long running dispute over pay and conditions. The University and College Union (UCU) action will see staff cease all exam invigilation, the setting and marking of exams and essays, and processing of grades ...
“University staff taking part in this year’s marking and assessment boycott will still carry out the rest of their duties, which usually include teaching, research, supervision, and administration. Nevertheless at least 60 universities have threatened to deduct between 50 and 100% of the wages of staff taking part in the boycott.
“The University of Bristol is threatening to deduct 50% of the wages of staff taking part in the boycott, while reserving the right to escalate deductions to 100% should the boycott ‘significantly impact student experience’, a term staff believe is purposefully vague ...
“SOAS University, Middlesex University, University of Suffolk, Liverpool John Moores, University of Sheffield, University of Leeds, and University of Cardiff are among some of the universities threatening to deduct 100% of staff wages.”

I’m so happy for them
[Image Description: Castiel from Supernatural is saying I love you, underneath is an image of Dean Winchester with the caption: “After four months of striking the WGA has a reached a tentative agreement & finalizing the contract. If all goes well writers will get to return to work with better pay and protections. They did it. Go unions”]

Some things I have learnt about pickets this week:
1) If your workplace is picketed, then if you are a member of staff not directly involved in the dispute, you can chose not to cross the picket line, and your employer ought to treat you like you are on strike. (do check this with your own union, though).
2) Legally, you cannot have more than 6 picketers, and they must all be from your place of work BUT you can have as many supporters as you like and the supporters can be anyone.
3) Pickets have to have a “supervisor” by law who must be trained and give their contact number to the police BUT the same supervisor can supervise a number of pickets in an area.
4) In the UK, pickets now aren’t allowed to attempt to intimidate those going into work, but picketers can talk to staff and encourage them not to cross. But you’re also not allowed to stop traffic.
5) You can join a union on the picket line and strike with that union.
Happy organising!

"What if my favourite show is delayed due to writers strike?"
With respect, no one cares about your favourite tv shows.
This is about real people fighting for their real livelihoods, for their futures.
I cannot articulate sufficiently how unimportant the production of some tv show or other is.

Workers face the sack if they don't cross their own picket lines. What kind of country is this?
“Six sectors of public services in Britain – some of them privatised – will in the next month or so be subject to Minimum Service Levels. The list covers health services, fire and rescue services, education, transport, nuclear decommissioning, and border security.
“What this means in practice is that when workers vote to strike in these sectors from now on, a significant proportion of them will be forced to come in – even if they voted to strike – or face the sack.
“For most sectors so far – including transport and education – that figure is 40%. The Trades Union Congress estimates that five million workers are now affected by the workers’ rights clampdown, with many told to cross their own picket lines even if they vote to strike ...
“The new Code of Practice is a convoluted mess which requires unions to instruct their members to defy strike actions they democratically voted for ... Unions must now navigate a complex web of requirements, pushing them to act against their members’ interests and their own principles. Members will be told to break their own strikes, or face the sack. Unions will be told to break their own strikes, or face hefty fines.”

Do you guys notice how when Shawn Fain, president of the United Auto Workers union, started planning a general strike, he did it by a) targeting his messaging towards unions with the ability to safely and effectively strike in large numbers, b) laid out a clear, actionable plan for those unions to follow (setting contracts to all expire at the same time, since many unions cannot strike while under contract), c) is using union contracts to set clear, actionable demands that can be met in order to gauge success and provide an end goal, and d) started organizing FOUR YEARS before the proposed strike date to give people the chance to plan accordingly, because it takes a really freaking long time to get tens of millions of people organized?
You notice how he didn't do it by slapping a message on Twitter saying 'hey nobody go to work on Monday, that'll really show 'em'?
