The Day The Music Died

In disorienting darkness, during a blistering snow storm, Buddy Holly’s chartered plain crashed in a cornfield on the night of February 3rd, 1959. Also, as passengers, P.J. “The Big Bopper” Richardson and Richie Valens were on board. No one, including the pilot, survived the crash. Although the moment became known as The Day the Music Died, Buddy Holly’s death only inspired greater artist to fill his absence and make him one of the most celebrated visionaries in American history.

From the time Buddy Holly’s first record was committed to wax, to the time of the plane crash spanned only eighteen months; eighteen months and a little over an hour and a half of music is what Buddy’s legacy is built on. What buddy holly did was more than write and record music, he created a style definitive of the juxtaposition of Elvis’s image of Rock n’ Roll and Chuck Berry’s raw, unfiltered rockabilly. He was able to tame these extremes into the perfect, family friendly music that would still freak out the Big Band era.

He not only sounded like the future, but he looked like the future. His suit and tie sensibility was offset by his horned rimmed glasses and his Fender Stratocaster. The Strat was introduced by the American guitar manufacture, Fender, in 1954. The goal of fender was to make guitars that matched the flashy expression that was the American automobile which projected the correct feel and image that made Buddy Holly’s music so popular. Before Buddy Holly, people hid behind large Gibsons, allowing the guitar to fall into the background, like jazz musicians at the time. Les Paul may have invented the electric guitar, but Buddy Holly explained to the world how to make it a feature of music rather than a facet.

It was one thing to hear “That Will Be The Day” on a slick new 45, it was a far greater experience to see Buddy Holly And The Crickets live on the Ed Sullivan Show, on a medium that made both the music and the image synonymous with stardom. Far removed from both Frank Sinatra-esk Swing music of the time, and the Elvis “The Pelvis” sexual overtones: Buddy Holly was able to be looked upon as pure rock and roll music, something of which would inspire the generation to pick up guitars and start playing this new brand of music.

Two people who followed Buddy Holly’s vision were Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper. Ritchie became the first ethnic act on the rock and roll scene, writing music in Spanish, but still adhering to the mystique that was American Rock n’ Roll. The Big Bopper found a way to tap into the teen resources of the time and make amazingly danceable hits. Buddy, and his two proteges, went on what could be considered the deadliest tour in music history.

Buddy Holly, who was strapped for money due to bad record deals, needed to go on tour to support his pregnant wife. The tour became knows as The Winter Dance Party and it toured through the blizzard swept areas of the north east. Conditions on the tour bus were unfathomable. The tour bus, which was basically a Greyhound, harbored conditions to that of a Russian Gulag. There was no heating on the bus and there were constant breakdowns that would cause the bands to stand in the snow waiting for repairs.

After a particularly grueling stop in Iowa, Buddy Holly decided to charter a plane. The plain was a single-engine Beech Bonanza witch only had 40 hours of flight time since it’s last inspection and overhaul. Ritchie, who was notoriously afraid of flying, flipped a coin with Waylon Jennings for his seat, Ritchie won.

According to the accident report filed by the Civil Aeronautics Board in September of 1959, the pilot was unable to defer the difference from the horizon and the ground due to the intense snow storm. Unable to decipher what the instruments were telling the pilot from the visual confirmation of the earth, the pilot hit the ground, at full speed, hurling the wreckage across the farm fields until it was stopped by a barbed wire fence at the edge of the property. There were no survivors.

Buddy Holly was 22.

Ritchie Valens was 17.

The Big Bopper was 28.

The most inspiring part of this story is the fact that music prevailed. Chuck Berry went on to record Johnny B. Goode, The Beach Boys would go on to write Surfin’ Safari and Jimmy Hendrix would go on to write Purple Haze. The same format that Buddy Holly set forth of having a chorus, a guitar solo, and then the chorus would be emulated for decades to come.

To say Buddy Holly invented the current pop structure would discredit years of jazz and swing artist, but the guitar solo was personified by the tenerity that was Buddy Holly. His ability to understand the unimportance of the idiosyncratic development of music has inspired everyone from The Beatles to The Foo Fighters.

Buddy Holly, and the artist that fell alongside him, were pillars in the development of music. Without them, the guitar would still be a substandard explanation of how music is expressed. The world would be a sadly different place if Buddy Holly didn’t exist. He made people play guitar and examine its potential in American music. Buddy created American music, something that would be emulated for year to come and produced in every person living room for years to come.
