VOTD: Rich Brian - “History”
Lately, music collectives have been on the rise in pop music. In an age of Brockhampton and 5 Seconds of Summer, 88rising may seem like they’re no different —  at least on the surface. But they certainly are.
88rising, the record label to which Rich Brian is signed, is a mass media company known for, among other things, having Joji and Keith Ape as associated acts. They also do exceptional production work, optimized cinematics, and innovative choreography. Rich Brian, currently touring with the label, has an identity of his own. As a young artist, he’s mastered the evolution of today’s music landscape.
Nostalgia, lost love, and youthful independence are apparent in his debut album, Amen (2018). One track off his solo album is “History” —  a booming hip-hop song with odes to broken love, portrayed in two music videos. The first video sparks interest in a montage mix of iconic TV and movie moments. In the more recent video, the feelings associated feel more real than what’s often romanticized.
Unlike his floral bop, “Glow Like Dat,” this video portrays romance in a bitter way. With dancing silhouettes, intimate party scenes, and Rich Brian flipping the bird, the video expresses anger rather than closure.
It’s not at all petty, though. It’s made up with celebratory moments, similar to Post Malone’s video for “Congratulations” or Mura Masa’s “Love$ick”  featuring A$AP Rocky. For Rich Brian, moving on and regaining independence is what truly matters, but it’s okay to reflect from time to time.
