observations on yuyuko tanaka and her penchant for playing dudes who die or are on the cusp of death constantly, whether by her own hand or just some silly little fate, and also how it's contrast to rui almost always being blessed with life (that's also given to her by yuyuko's hand or some silly little fate).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
or: yuyuko "doomed by the narrative (that she wrote herself)" tanaka + rui "blessed by the narrative (that yuyuko writes for her)" akikaze.
so as said, a while back i noticed that yuyuko's roles are almost all like. guys who brush with death/just outright die die. i went down the roles she has in just her cards and listed them all down on my priv twitter and it looked like:
Tumblr media
so a good like. 2/10 roles that don't end badly.
i ended up rereading like. basically almost every rmk story out there, from the earliest ones available and uhm. so.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(purple clouds of the afterworld chapter 5)
Tumblr media
(tales of onikurenai chapter 2)
Tumblr media
(shibahama final chapter)
all of these are from events pre-downfall (not sure about shibahama but i def know the other ones are). yuyuko's always been fond of tragedies.
obviously this manifests in a lot of her scripts (ghost patrol story rerun, shinsengumi rinpuden, her influence on arcana arcadia's script, and most importantly, rinmeiki), but what i think is interesting is that she saves a lot of the worst fates for herself.
in ghost patrol, whilst fumi and ichie's characters have some tragic interpersonal drama/trauma, it sorts itself out by the end. but yuyuko's character's entire existence attracts danger, death at every turn.
shinsengumi rinpuden has her portray okita soji. fumi describes the story to yuyuko as such:
Tumblr media
(okita soji yuyuko bond story 1)
the romanticization of destruction. that feeling of knowing that you died a glorious and honourable death. and what role does yuyuko give herself? what does she do with herself?
Tumblr media
die in the antithesis of it. if read as fumi described, the most pathetic death she could have.
i'd go into rinmeiki but that's a beast all on its own, and is mostly rooted in the characters themselves, and not character exploration through them acting as something else. there isnt even much of a script of it ingame, in the sense of the rest of the other examples, so i'll move onto arcana arcadia.
whether a quirk of the fact she was picked as the magician and it was planned from the beginning, or the fact that she is part of the scriptwriting team and therefore has some measure of control on her character, the magician has one of the worst fates in aa, quite literally selling her soul to the devil and damning herself to hell forever, all done by her own hand. she willingly damned herself.
interestingly in these same stories, the things she gives to rui's roles, is life.
kiichi miroku in ghost patrol is still quite equal to abe no suiren, but it's not her that's constantly attracting ghosts.
hajime saito was one of the two survivors of shinsengumi rinpuden. while he didn't have a role to play alive unlike fumi's nagakura shinpachi, hajime saito was still left alive, and given to rui.
now, the hanged man. which at this fucking point is hilariously on the nose, as the magician damns herself to ensure that the hanged man lives and changes the world, a human saving humans and not humans relying on god to save them. she gives up her hopes, her life AND her afterlife for him. the caveat being, if he decides to accept her offer of "becoming the main character". which he does. and while the path he chose by taking up the magician's offer still leads him to hell, he still leaves with his life and a goal to chase, a world to change. it is the magician that pushes the hanged man forward into making something of himself, of the world he lives in, and she herself is only one little spark to light the fire.
indeed, yuyuko is constantly reliving the transience of the stage that she is so fond of. but she does not extend this transience to rui. yuyuko is happy to die over and over again, but rui. rui must live. well, of course she must, yuyuko loves her.
Tumblr media
like the hanged man and the magician, yuyuko would give up her life for someone so dear to her.
...
...
so anyways remember when ichie said this in arcana arcadia?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
there's a difference in the cyclical deaths that yuyuko and fumi are portraying though, in that fumi dies over and over again to try and regain the past, whilst yuyuko plants her feet firmly in the present and dies over and over again for someone else's future.
Tumblr media
she moves forward only when rui does, and in magician stories she does even tell nana that she'll decide to be rui's producer so she can make her into the best stage girl that akikaze rui can be. but what about her? she seems to understand that stage girls must keep moving on, keep moving forward towards the future with unparalleled hunger, but as of right now it appears that she has put herself in an odd stasis. she moves when rui does, she dies when rui does. it's an existence as a stage girl that cannot entirely continue.
this dependence can keep one going for a while, but it cannot last forever. could yuyuko move forward without rui walking the path beside her? could rui move forward without yuyuko's silent support? if the ties between them are severed, would they bleed out and die?
well, only time will tell. i patiently await what story is to be told in their futures.
though i will say, to be separated like this isn't entirely a tragedy. what they've gained from each other will follow them for the rest of their lives. even apart, everyone is still together.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
tl:dr: hey little dude. why do you keep dooming yourself in narratives that you have control over. and why do you keep giving the big guy you love narratives that favor his life.

SEMI-FINALS! MATCH 2 OUT OF 2
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Propaganda Under the Cut:
Ylfa:
She just went through so much and so much growth and i love her very much.
She becomes a big bad wolf
She met Death and Death wanted her to live.
Great depiction of a teenager by Emily Axford. A lot of scenes get really emotional with her being a symbol of the cycle of life and death and eventually she will always become the Big Bad Wolf.
she faced off with Death and he told her to live. this Death, who was much older than the Death she was supposed to meet, stared off with Yilfa for days until she succumbed to hunger and ate him alive. other iterations of death apologized to her for the story she was forced to suffer through, for the punishment she had to endure over an unrealistic and unabidable rule she was destined to break. her corrupted story turned her into the big bad wolf, into death itself. she sacrificed the beloved memory of her grandma, her namesake, so that her friends would be able to save their world. even though she gained it back in the end, she was willing to live the rest of her life as the wolf, a harbinger of death, and when she was reminded that she was just a child, that it wasn’t her responsibility to guide the dead, she cried, and separated from the wolf. she was able to grow up normal and happy after suffering from the looming presence of death. i’m gonna make me friend also submit yilfa bc they’re smarter than me and can make better propaganda
my mutual really likes her
Her narrative arc about growing up and life and death is so beautiful and her being a werewolf is so cool. Emily Axford gets girlhood like nobody else.
she is the bravest little girl in the world she met death and death wanted her to live she split his skull and ate the innards of death himself she is just a little girl!!!!!!!
PRIMO Red Riding Hood adaptation. Ate the wolf who ate her gramma. Is a werewolf and a metaphor for puberty. Loves her friends. Can break her bones to reshape her body into various animal forms.
Not only did she have to lose her grandmother, but she also nearly dies of starvation and exhaustion until The Big Bad Wolf, aka Death, convinced her to live, by her killing him and eating his flesh, therefore making her Death
Ylfa has a snazzy orange top hat given to her by a very attractive fairy. Three Blind Mice is her favorite story. She brought her grandma lollipopcorn and threw the broth in the river halfway there. She first developed a crush on Pinocchio when she saw him use his nose as a stripper pole and didn't kiss him until they were twenty-one and having an awkward conversation about her grandma's death and Toy Island. She fought a baron with a spoon. She wants a bra. She jumped into The Terrible Dogfish’s stomach to save her friend. She has pinkeye and grandma hobbies. She fought off a shit ton of homicidal tables at once. She is pals with Little Miss Muffet. She killed her family. She sacrificed the memory of her grandmother to become Death. She was basically adopted by Mother Goose (who is a cool old gay dude). She Wildshapes by horribly contorting her body into animalistic forms. She is a Barbarian who acts as a support character. She is the bravest little girl in the whole world.
Behold, 3 minutes of the weirdest and best little girl! [Link]
Her weirdgirl swag is off the charts :) [Link]
Ylfa Propaganda: [Link]
Ylfa turns Little Red Riding Hood into a metaphor for not just puberty but grief and death and the inevitability of loss--of innocence, of childhood, of who you had and who you were. The Wolf is the End of All Things, and Ylfa met Death and Death wanted her to live. She gave up the memory of her grandmother--her namesake, her humanity--and became Death, and she was there to be the end of her grandmother's grandmother's story, because there always has been and always will be a wolf. But in the end, she is just a little girl, and she doesn't have to take this burden. There is a wolf-that-is-not-a-wolf waiting for everyone with a snazzy orange top hat, and there is a strange girl playing cards with witches and kissing a boy who used to be a puppet, and they all lived happily.
Vote Ylfa cause she pulled through when it came to the Riding Hooded Mercenary and I know a worthy opponent when I see one.
Yuyuko:
She's related to Red Riding Hood, has costumes of Red Riding Hood, and she has ten hoodies in various shades of red. She's sapphic. She's autistic. She's a dog person. She's little beepo.
Technically this might be stretching it because she was casted into this play exactly once (though she has two cards dedicated to it due to the Encore cards). Anyways she always wears around a big red hood outside of this play but that's not directly based off of Little Red Riding hood from my knowledge so it doesn't matter much. What does matter is that Yuyuko keeps up her pattern of being casted in roles where her character either dies or suffers a lot (this one being the latter) in this play, though thankfully I'm not sure that she wrote herself into this narrative this time

an observation/character study of pisces tamao's story and developments from arcana arcadia -> star celebrate, along with my interpretations. note that a decent amount of these is just taken from some loose threads i made on twitter a while back, this is just the expanded version of it.
Tumblr media
or: bro who knows and fell into utter despair and embraced wanton destruction and the power it gave her now chooses to embrace her innate love and compassion in spite of what she once did 💀💀💀💀💀
revue of salvation and rebirth, or tamarui revue at the end of aa act 5 concludes with rui having to basically beat into tamao that the death she's emulating, a being something like maya, or akira, is not who she is. the tamao tomoe that gave rinmeikan, and all of them, life, is someone who is sweet, kind and compassionate. tamao is scared to go back to that again, something that she deemed weak, but she chose that path in the end.
Tumblr media
tamao became a villainous death out of desperation. she’s done so much. but she still has the choice to embrace her kindness. she will always have the choice. in spite of the death she once was, she can move on and grow past it through the kindness she chose.
and i think, in her star celebrate story (pisces) is when we first see how she wields this kindness and compassion.
the tl:dr of it is that tamao's stuck on how to perform her role and asks mahiru for help. star celebrate is a play without a script and it's up to the actors to interpret their roles. the story of pisces is about the goddess aphrodite who was holding a banquet at the banks of the nile, when the monster typhon suddenly appears and attacks. fearing being separated from her child, eros, she ties a string between them and disguises themselves as fish, and this is how pisces came to be. tamao has already come up with something, but...
Tumblr media
it feels too simple for her. after a while nighttime falls and mahiru and tamao try to find pisces. and then, mahiru speaks up.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
mahiru asks tamao to look within herself. introspection of the self, i suppose. and at the end, here is what tamao's interpretation becomes.
Tumblr media
a mother who loves her child, binds herself to him, but understands that one day, the string that ties them together must be cut, and the child must make a journey all on his own. but as per her mother's love, she hopes that it is not her, but her child that severs it. if it is the child that severs, then she knows not to worry, as it shows that her child has the strength and courage to face the future head on.
what i believe this is, interpret this as, is tamao's feelings between her, and ruiyukko.
it was often brought up in previous stories how much tamao fussed and worried over everyone in rinmeikan, but rui and yuyuko especially, because they're her juniors, and the ones who will inherit the rmk performance department.
tamao and ruiyukko are very much tied up in their roles as "senior" and "junior", "lord" and "follower". so even if it was not tamao's intention, it's those ties that would have them still follow her as death, willingly (rui) or unwillingly (yuyuko). perhaps she realized this. perhaps she too has come to the conclusion that they must move on from this, set off on a journey on their own, a philosophy similar to the movie.
it's obvious she cares for them, a lot. but if she is to see them flourish as stage girls, make a journey of their own, she has to cut what ties them together. but it is her innate compassion that dictates and hopes, that it will not be her that cuts these ties, it has to be rui and yuyuko that cuts them. to sever it herself would be cruelty. but she cannot care for them forever, as an unchanging stasis will lead to their deaths as stage girls. they will not grow. so wielding her compassion and love, she gives them the choice.
if rui and yuyuko choose to sever, then tamao need not worry or fuss over them as she did in the past. if they show her the courage and strength needed to make that choice, then she knows that they will be fine for what lies ahead.
tl:dr : look at my son boy. he who knew the power of death and despair once but grew to choose and believe in her compassion and love as her power. Look At How My Son Has Grown, Boy.
