Do you have a snoot noodle or other variation of sighthound? If yes, there’s new heart health research for the breed happening!
A researcher at Texas A&M whose work I’m familiar with is starting a new study looking at genetic factors contributing to heart disease in Borzoi and related breeds. They just put out a call for dog owners who are willing to submit saliva samples & (noodle) medical records. Studies like this need a big sample size! They’re accepting new sign-ups starting now until March 1, 2025, for dogs both in the US and internationally.

“Background and purpose
Recent research in Borzoi dogs has revealed that dogs of this breed experience sudden, unexplained death. About 85% of sudden, unexplained deaths in humans are linked to an underlying heart disease. Our existing research in Borzoi dogs has shown that they are predisposed to developing arrhythmias (abnormal heart rhythms) and dilated cardiomyopathy (a heart muscle disease causing dilated heart chambers and weak pumping function).
Due to our documentation of the frequency of these conditions in Borzoi dogs, we seek to identify responsible genetic variations similar to what is seen in humans with electrical cardiac diseases that trigger arrhythmias and dilated cardiomyopathy.
The objective of our study is to identify genetic mutations associated with heart disease in Borzoi dogs and document their existence in other sighthound breeds.
What happens in this study
We are collecting saliva samples from both healthy Borzoi and Borzoi dogs affected with arrhythmias and/or dilated cardiomyopathy. We will also collect saliva samples from any other sighthound breeds.
We will extract DNA from these samples and perform genomic sequencing on a select number while retaining the remainder for further screening.By analyzing the sequencing data, we can compare the genes of healthy and affected Borzoi dogs and identify variants linked to their heart conditions. We will also compare the findings in Borzoi dogs to results from other sighthound breeds.
Pet owner responsibilities
A swab kit will be sent to you for at home use along with a link to an instructional video on how to properly obtain a swab of the mouth. The kit will contain equipment to collect the saliva swab, a history form for your pet, a client consent form and a shipping label to return samples to us.
Participation requirements
To participate, you must have a Borzoi dog or a sighthound breed that is either healthy or affected by arrhythmias and/or dilated cardiomyopathy. Pets may be any age or sex. Electronic or paper veterinary medical records will need to be provided.
Benefits and risks of participating
There is little to no risk for taking a brief swab of the mouth for saliva collection if procedures outlined in the video are followed. No individual genetic test results will be provided to study participants.
Compensation
There is no cost to the owner for participating in this study. No compensation will be provided.”

When I wrote my thesis a few years back I read this article/book chapter that I found useful for the discussion of the ways that blaming Jews turns into caricatures of Jews which in turn became character tropes and narrative turns that we can find in literature, specifically children's fantasy per the scope of my research. Over the past number of months I keep thinking about this one piece specifically, and how I think it would be good for more people to read it.
The Ritual Murder or Blood Libel Legend: A Study of Anti-Semitic Victimization through Projective Inversion by Alan Dundes, edited by Simon J. Bronner. JSTOR stable link: https://www.jstor.org/stable/pdf/j.ctt4cgrzn.24.pdf It's openly available, you do not need institution access to be able to view it, please do give it a read.
It's a discussion about the blood libel legend, where it comes from, why it proliferates, and why Christians are so obsessed with it. I found it to be a really well argued take on the idea of projecting internal guilt onto the other and how that is a large aspect of the longevity of this particular antisemitic legend.
Given what we've seen in the past four months, there is room to discuss the way that this idea of projective inversion is very relevant today.
I am a scholar in literary antisemitism, not in politics, not in war, not in human rights. I am looking at what is happening online and in leftist spaces from the view of someone who spent years studying antisemitic rhetoric.

Well we made an aviary and collected a bunch of untamed parrots so that they can fly around the aviary without teleporting outside. Then we decided we should put the allay in there because they're basically glorified birds and it's a really nice aviary with pretty flowers and a tree and a pond. And for some reason?? The parrots are /following/ the allay around the aviary like the allay is their blue God. It's like when farmers put a donkey in with sheep so the sheep will follow the donkey to water except the donkey isn't going to water it's an obnoxious two year old with no sense of self preservation

Cases with Major Updates in 2023, Part One.
Many cases featured on this page had major updates during 2023. While these cases still aren't resolved, these updates created movement in their investigations and more awareness to the case overall.
Here's part one of the list of cases with major updates this year. Lots of you are already familiar with them so I provided a brief TL;DR description with each, but links to the full case write-up are there as well! Part two will be posted at a later date.
The Disappearance & Death of Cheyann Klus.
TL;DR update: The remains of Cheyann Klus were identified in January 2023. Cheyann had been missing since December 2017; she vanished at the age of 22 from Chicago, Illinois. Her remains were reportedly found in 2020 but remained unidentified until January 2023.
The Disappearance & Murder of Katelyn Markham.
TL;DR update: In March 2023, John Carter was charged with Katelyn's murder. Weeks earlier, Jonathan Palmerton was charged with perjury in relation to Katelyn's murder. Katelyn originally vanished in Fairfield, Ohio at the age of 21 during 2011. Her remains were found in 2013. Carter was Katelyn's fiancé and he had been a person of interest in the case since her disappearance. The cases against both men are currently pending.
The Murder of Courtney Phillips.
TL;DR update: Isaac Estrada was finally charged with Courtney Phillips' murder after being captured by authorities in Eagle Pass, Texas. Courtney was found stabbed to death at a residence in San Antonio, Texas in April 2015. Estrada was a suspect early into the investigation, but police were unable to locate him. After 8 years on the run, Estrada was finally captured in March 2023. He is currently facing charges for evading arrest, first-degree aggravated robbery and first-degree murder.
The Disappearance of Irene Gakwa.
TL;DR update: During March 2023, Nathan Hightman was sentenced to six years in prison for using Irene Gakwa's credit cards, bank accounts, and Facebook/email accounts after she went missing in February 2022. Irene is still missing, and Hightman still denies knowledge of her whereabouts.
The Disappearance & Death of Madison Scott.
TL;DR update: The remains of Madison Scott were found on a rural property east of Vanderhoof during May 2023. Madison vanished at the age of 20 nearly 12 years earlier during a party at Hogsback Lake. Since the discovery of her remains, detectives have remained quiet about the state of the investigation.

The lack of empathy and basic thinking that people have on the internet is so concerning honestly.
A lot of wars in the world are caused by horrible leaders, governments, and groups which in turn end up getting so many innocent people dragged into it who don't support them and don't want to do anything with it.

After more researching and reflecting, we're coming to terms, positively speaking, that we actually have DID instead of OSDD-1b ( a partial form of DID ) and... wow! This is still a lot to process as it's making me more emotional, but this feels right and better.
