you and the marauders become animagi for remus, despite his protests. you'd follow him anywhere: through the tunnel under the whomping willow, during hospital wing overnights, and even within a burgeoning war. you ruined every one of remus' plans, but it saved his life. (slow burn, angst)

"Happy one-month anniversary!" Remus walks up to you, and you look at him with a puzzled expression.
"Anniversary?"
"We've been friends for a month!" In his stretched-out hand is a flower. Your favorite kind.
. • ☆ . ° .• °:. *₊ ° . ☆
"They're my favorite flower," You sighed dreamily, staring at the vase in the hotel lobby.
"Yeah?" He asks with a flushed face—he's had a couple too many drinks.
"Yeah. There's something so beautiful about them. I can't quite put my finger on it."
"There doesn't need to be a reason," He slurs, "You can just love them because they're lovely."
"I suppose I can," You shrug.
. • ☆ . ° .• °:. *₊ ° . ☆
"I remember you said they were your favorite," He rubs the back of his neck, "And I wanted to celebrate."
"Thank you, Remus." You smile, and he blushes when your fingertips brush as you grab the flower.
"You see those two?" Sirius whispers to Harry, who intently watches him with big, green eyes, "They're friends now. For the past month, they've been friends. They even hung out once by themselves." Harry smiles and claps, squealing with joy. It catches your attention, and you walk over to the young baby.
"Oh, someone's happy," You coo, ruffing up his hair, "So smiley!" You pinch his cheeks.
"Stop trying to steal him from me!" Sirius whines.
"I'm not stealing him from you," You turn back to Harry, "I'm just showing him all the love he deserves," You tear up when he stares into your eyes. Just such a precious baby born from love and care. You hope it will be the same way when you have a baby. And then you realize that you're still young, and you have nobody to have a baby with, and you shouldn't be having these thoughts right now!
But then you look back into his eyes, and he giggles and reaches in your direction. He wants to be held. Sirius swoops him up before you can, "That's enough of that!" He sneers, "Harry is mine, not yours."
"He's actually mine." Lily smiles as she walks up to her boy. "Hello," She coos, "Who's the cutest in the world?" She asks, taking her child from Sirius's hands, "You are!" She boops him on the nose, and Harry giggles.
"You find that funny?" She asks, tapping his nose again. He giggles harder, and you swear he's the happiest baby in the entire world.
"He's cute, isn't he?"
The voice sends a shiver down your spine, "You scared me!" You playfully hit Remus on his shoulder.
"Sorry," He laughs, "Promise I didn't mean to."
"You're cruel, Lupin."
And he fears he's right back at the start. You're calling him Lupin—you haven't called him Lupin since… since your feud.
But then you smile at him, and he swears it's like the sun is shining in his face; he is blinded by your beauty, and he knows you're joking.
"Got you a little scared there, did I, Remus?"
"You say my name so nice." He breathes out.
"Remus," You test, and he sighs, "I have a question for you."
"Shoot."
"I'm going to use my 'IOU,' okay?"
Remus nods, "Lay it on me."
"Will you be my date to Marly and Cas's wedding?"
"Uh..." Remus's hand goes to the back of his head, and as he scratches, he feels his heart explode. Yes, he will be your date for a wedding. He will be your date anywhere, anytime.
"It's okay if not," You scramble out, "I understand."
"No! No, I'll be your date," He smiles gently, "I'd love to be your date."
"Really?" You smile, and Remus swears you've illuminated the room.
"Of course."
"They are in love," Lily whispers to Harry, who nods importantly.

You saw him at exactly the same moment he saw you. Thirteen years had gone by ever since you saw him, in this same castle before you both went your separate ways. You were pleased to notice he hadn’t changed much. Sure, he had gotten older, just like yourself, but you would recognize those green eyes and kind smile everywhere. Remus Lupin was standing by himself, surrounded by the other teachers, some of whom were your own teachers during your time at Hogwarts.
As soon as Remus caught your eyes, he smiled and quickly approached you. He seemed happy to see a familiar face.
When he got closer you noticed he had definitely changed more than you assumed at first. His eyes, still kind and friendly, were lined and his face was covered in scars. His clothes were old and repaired at different places.
‘Y/N L/N? What a pleasant surprise to see you here,’ he said after he placed his hand on yours for a moment.
‘Or did you end up changing your last name?’ he added with a grin. His comment made your blood freeze. You shook your head in response.
‘It’s just L/N. How are you, Remus. I wasn’t expecting you here.’
His grin turned into a proper smile.
‘Really? I always assumed you would marry your high school sweetheart as soon as you left Hogwarts as Head Boy and Head Girl.’
You didn’t respond right away. Maybe lying would be easier, but then again, the truth always came out and you weren’t looking forward to having explain why you lied about such a crucial part of your life story. Something that had changed you forever.
‘We did actually. Get married,’ you said softly, hoping no other person but Remus would hear your words. His eyes widened, observing you with a puzzled look in his eyes, as if he was trying to solve a mystery.
‘You got divorced.’
‘He died.’
Remus took a step back, creating more space between the two of you and you immediately wish you never told him. His smile had disappeared as easily as it had appeared and he looked at you with worry written all over his face.
‘I’m so sorry I asked, Y/N. I had no idea.’ He extended his hand, but never let his fingers touch you. Instead he let them float in the air, as if he was not sure where to put them.
‘It’s okay, Remus. It happened five years ago. He got into an accident at work,’ you explained with a weak smile. The widow part of your life story was always a bit awkward to discuss and you tried to avoid talking about it whenever it was possible.
‘I didn’t know you were a professor,’ you mentioned casually, desperate to change the subject but at the same time genuinely surprised.
‘I’m actually new here. Starting tomorrow as Defence Against the Dark Arts professor.’ He said this with a proud smile.
‘We have that in common. Not the Defence part, but I start tomorrow as well. Charms.’
‘Obviously,’ he said matter-of-factly. You raised your eyebrows in question.
‘I remember you were an excellent student, even for a Ravenclaw. Professor  Flitwick used to rave about your spell work all the time,’ he explained. You averted your gaze when you felt your cheeks burning.
‘It’s only natural you take over from him during his sabbatical,’ he added. Professor Dumbledore had contacted you personally to ask whether you would be willing to return to Hogwarts to teach Charms for a year while Professor Flitwick was away travelling. You felt deeply honored he even considered you and replied by returning owl you would love the job. It was very different from your usual work at the Ministry, where you had been working for the Department of Magical accidents and catastrophes. But Remus was right, your spell work was impeccable.
‘You weren’t a bad student yourself, Remus, you were a prefect as well.’
He chuckled and shook his head.
‘Dumbledore mainly made me a prefect so I could keep my friends in order. I was weak of course and let them misbehave all the same while conveniently looking the other way,’ he said with a smile on his face. You laughed at his comment.
‘What have you been up to after graduating? I can’t believe we never crossed paths again,’ you asked him. His expression changed and he averted his eyes. But he never answered, for you were interrupted.
‘Lupin. Seeing you here is living proof the headmaster is very desperate to fill the position of Defence Against the Dark Arts professor to let someone like yourself teach our young witches and wizards,’ you heard a sly voice behind you. You turned around and saw yet another familiar face from your time at Hogwarts.
Severus Snape was looking at Remus Lupin with a look in his eyes that was something between disgust and confusion.
‘Severus, lovely to see you as well. It’s always nice to see a familiar face when you’re about to start a new job. Takes some of the tension away,’  you said sarcastically before Remus could reply.
‘Y/N? I didn’t recognize you right away. I see you’ve found your way back to Hogwarts as well.’ Severus’ voice had softened. The two of you had never been friends, you were simply too different, but you and Severus had always had some sort of unspoken respect for each other. He was smart, cunning and a bit shy. You used to partner during Potions from time to time because you both enjoyed to work with someone who was quiet and studious.
‘I have. And since we’re all colleagues  now, maybe it’s time to leave the past in the past,’ you said urgently. Remus’ friends James and Sirius had always bullied Severus and even though you were fairly sure Remus himself was never involved, Severus despised him by association.
Severus didn’t get a chance to respond, because Albus Dumbledore had started talking.
‘Welcome everyone. Before we go to the Great Hall to welcome our students, I have a few announcements to make. First of all, I’d like to thank each and every one of you extraordinary witches and wizards for returning to Hogwarts to teach our young minds. It’s an incredible honour to be in the presence of so many talented and dedicated people.’
Professor McGonagall coughed, which seemed to remind the headmaster he was going somewhere with his speech.
‘But let’s not dwell on that for too long. Firstly I’d like to introduce and welcome miss Y/N L/N. she kindly agreed to teach Charms this year while professor Flitwick is away travelling. Her magnificent work for the Ministry is proof she is more than capable to teach our students everything they need to when it comes to Charms.’ The headmaster beamed at you and started clapping. You felt a bit shy when the other teachers joined in and you were glad when professor Dumbledore spoke again.
‘The other announcement is a bit more serious. I’m very happy to welcome Remus Lupin, who will fill the vacancy of Defence against the Dark Arts professor. He is very capable and intelligent and I look forward to see our students learn from him. However, there is a matter that needs to be addressed about a certain… condition.’
You felt a lump in your throat when the headmaster spoke these words. It sounded ominous. You tried to catch Remus’ eyes, but he was staring at professor Dumbledore, seemingly unaware of your attempts to look at him.
‘Before I explain I have to mention that this piece of information should not travel further than this room. It must not be shared with the students. As a young boy, Remus was bitten by a werewolf. This forces him to turn into a wolf every full moon.’
The entire room had gone quiet and it felt like all there was no oxygen left in the room.
‘Fortunately, we have a very talented Potions Master in our midst who will provide our new professor with the Wolfsbane potion to ease the symptoms around the full moon. I’d like to remind you all again that this information is not to be shared with anyone else, especially not the students. Are there any questions?’
The headmaster looked around the room and a content smile appeared on his face when no one spoke.
‘Thank you for listening and please follow me to the Great Hall.’
~~**~~
All throughout the feast, you tried to get Remus’ attention, but you were unsuccessful. You sat in between Rubeus Hagrid and Sybill Trelawney, the game keeper and the Divination professor. Both were kind and asked lots of questions about your work at the Ministry and why you decided to return to Hogwarts.
However, the feast seemed to last forever and even though you had looked forward to be able to enjoy a Hogwarts feast after all these years, you could barely eat anything. The news about Remus had upset you and you wanted nothing more than to talk to him. To ask him how he was doing and to ask if there was anything you could do to help him.
It was a relief when the desserts had disappeared from the tables and the headmaster had send the students off to bed. You got up quickly as well, but you felt a strong grip on your wrist. When you looked up, you saw Sybill staring at you.
‘Be sure to visit me soon, miss Y/L/N. Your aura is uncommonly strong, I’m sure I’ll be able to see all about your future in my crystal ball,’ she said urgently. You nodded quickly and was relieved when she let go off your wrist. Sitting through an entire feast with her next to you had been dreadful and you had no intention of ever visiting her office, but you were just trying to get away from her.
Remus was already leaving the Great Hall and you quickly followed him. When you pasted the headmaster, you smiled and wished him a good night.
The corridor was deserted and you walked a bit faster. When you turned right, you saw him again.
‘Remus!’ He didn’t respond and you were no longer walking but running.
‘Remus! REMUS! WOULD YOU STOP WALKING AWAY FROM ME AND LISTEN?’ you yelled. You had completely lost your temper. Whereas you were always calm and collected, him ignoring you made you so angry you yelled at him. Your sudden rage felt embarrassing, but at least it was effective. Remus had stopped walking and turned around to face you.
‘I’m not really in the mood for small talk, miss L/N,’ he said without looking at you. This angered you even more.
‘Excuse me? Miss L/N?’ you repeated. You were so surprised at his sudden cold approach to you there was nothing else you could say. You started to tremble slightly.
‘We’re not doing this,’ he said coldly. When he finally looked at you, he looked even more tired than when you met earlier, his eyes bloodshot.
‘Doing what?’
‘Being friendly. Dumbledore explained everything. I’m dangerous.’
You shook your head in disbelief.
‘You’re hardly dangerous right now. The full moon was two days ago. You’re as dangerous as I am for about a month.’
‘You’re not stupid, Y/N. I am dangerous. I don’t want to get close to anyone. I’m grateful to Dumbledore for getting me a job and that is what I’m here to do. Teach.’
‘This is crazy, Remus. I’m not afraid of you and like you mentioned, I’m not stupid. I’m perfectly capable of choosing my own company and I choose you. I don’t care about your stupid problem.’
A tiny, careful smile appeared on his face, though it didn’t seem to reach his eyes.
‘You’re the first person to ever call me being a werewolf a ‘stupid problem’,’ he said gloomily.
‘Well, it is. It’s just a stupid thing. You were a child when you got bitten. There’s nothing you can do to change what happened. The only thing you can do is take responsibility and make yourself less dangerous. And according to the headmaster, you did exactly that. Please don’t isolate yourself, Remus. There’s no need to.’
He shook his head.
‘I’m sorry to tell you, but I have to. It’s safest for everyone.’ He turned around, but before he could walk away, you started talking.
‘Why did you act so nice then? Earlier? You knew Dumbledore would tell the staff about your condition. Why bother being nice to me if you were planning to give me the silent treatment afterwards?’
There was so much you didn’t say. Like the fact that you felt happier than you did in a long time when you saw him. How he had made you feel a little less insecure about teaching when he complimented your spell work from over a decade ago. How proud it made you feel that he had remembered your full name, even though you had been sorted into different houses and were never friends.
‘I was genuinely happy to see you, Y/N. I stupidly forgot I intended to keep my distance. I felt drawn to you,’ he said softly. The silence felt heavy. So many things were left unsaid.
‘But I have remembered it now and that’s just in time. Good night, Y/N.’ Once more he turned around and this time, he walked away.
‘I will not let you get away this easily. Trust me, you’ll want to have a friend around here.’ You had no idea if your words were going to persuade him, but you weren’t just going to let him deal with this all by himself.

a pearl in his whiskey — remus lupin ♡

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐮𝐞
the first time he saw you, remus lupin was tired to his bones, and all he really wanted was a decent tankard of ale.
he’d been fighting with his second mate, sirius black, all morning, and it had ended with both of their shirts torn to shreds.
lily evans, the ship’s surgeon, had gone to fetch them some more from the market. they were only scheduled on land for three days, but their jewels and feathers turned enough heads without the addition of a lack of fabric on their chests. currently, the buttons of his scarlet long coat were fastened to cover that issue.
“a pint of golden ale, love.” he murmured to you at the bar, sliding over too much gold and asking for no change.
you smiled sympathetically, though he missed it, staring at your hands wiping down the wood with a tattered cloth.
“ay, we’re out of ale since this morning. whiskey?”
he looked up to frown and tell you how he hated that foul drink, but the words were snatched from his throat as he met your eyes.
hardened, because if you’d made it so far in their world how else could they be. but also curious, maybe kind, definitely sharp.
“sure, whiskey.” he sighed, steeling himself for such a god awful drink.
you poured a glass with a practiced hand, about to give it to him. then, you saw the local taxmen entering your tavern, and promptly tipped the bitter liquid down your own throat.
remus huffed a half laugh, “what’s troubling you, then.”
he was jesting, not asking.
you swat him with your towel, and he wonders how you can be so at ease with a man who you can see is wielding five weapons.
“that’s my line! don’t worry, i’ll get ya another, just let me deal with these blokes. looks like you’ve got a friend here anyway.”
he would’ve refused the drink, but he wanted you to walk back over when you were done. you were also right. he did have a friend.
james potter jumped onto the bar stool next to him, “lily’s hit a snag.”
his first mate seemed a lot more jittery than usual, brimming with a nervous energy unlike his standard confidence. breathing in deeply through his nose, remus took the bait, “talk.”
the curly-haired man winced, “merchant called her out on fake coins, wouldn’t sell her the shirts.”
“why’d she use fake gold?”
james rolled his eyes, “she didn’t, but you tell a trader a pirate ain’t conning him. anyway, they arrested her.”
the whiskey arrived, skidding down the bar from where you spoke with another customer. he downed it in one, gesturing for james to continue.
“dorcas was tryna talk ‘em down. but she’s our gunner, not all charismatic and shit. marls went to help. didn’t go well.”
remus pinched the bridge of his nose, “right. gather everyone on the ship. we’ll figure it out...”
he looked towards you, only to find you smiling back at him, “looks like we’ll be here longer than we thought.”

── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚.─── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚.───・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚.──
You lazily stared at the opening door, hoping Remus will soon pass the door. It’s been days since you saw him. The last time, you fell asleep on his shoulder and you hoped it didn’t repulse or scare him. Fortunately, your days were filled with hurrying customers to keep you busy.
You ran a hand over your face, letting out a long sigh. You were about to slow down a bit, your day being tiring enough, but a tall silhouette caught your attention. Your lips instantly tugged up, you couldn’t express how happy you were to find Remus again.
But when you lifted your gaze, your eyes fell on someone who wasn’t Remus. Your smile turned down, you couldn’t help but be disappointed. You cleared your throat before talking “Hello, what can I do for you?” you listened to the customer’s answer but you were clearly thinking about everything but their iced latte with caramel drizzle. Remus, what is happening to you?
:・゚✧*:・゚
You plopped down on your bed, staring at your phone. Remus didn’t give any sign of life since the last time. Why did you have to fall asleep on him? Why did you have to ruin everything? You just crashed the wall of your relationship that you were slowly building.
You buried your face in your pillow, inhaling longly, since when you were thinking this much?
A conflict was clouding your mind, should you text him? Should you not? But you know what? Fuck it. He didn’t even come anymore so what worse could happen?
You grabbed your phone, searching for his name in the contacts.
Hi :) Are you okay? Didn’t see you for a while
The boost of courage you had disappeared in a second and you immediately regretted what you just did and threw your phone away. You groaned into your pillow, that was a shitty day. You got up to take a shower and brush your teeth, when got back to your room, you couldn’t help but glance at your phone.
Your eyes widened, he actually replied. You took a deep breath and read his text
Hello, I’m okay. Just having some issues but don’t worry, I’ll try to pass by tomorrow.
A selfish part of you was relieved it wasn’t your fault but the guilt of thinking this quickly rushed to your head. He just said he had issues and you were happy. You hated your brain today and you just needed this never-ending week to stop.
:・゚✧*:・゚
“Y/n”
You snapped your head up, not believing you finally heard his voice “Remmy!” your smile was so bright and warm and Remus needed it so much. “The usual?” you asked, grabbing a cup from the counter.
Remus nodded, more than happy to get back to his old habits. He felt bad for not letting you know why he just stopped grabbing a coffee after work, especially considering what happened the last time you saw each other, he hoped you didn’t think he didn’t enjoy having your head on his shoulder as you fell asleep.
He waited for you to make his order in silence, watching you cautiously pouring the milk into the coffee, amazed by the precision in your movement.
You finally looked up at him again and he found himself unable to tear his eyes away from you “I’m sorry for not giving news for a week or so” was the first thing that came out of his mouth when he grabbed the cup from your hand.
You offered him a shy smile, missing the feeling of his skin against yours, before replying “It’s okay, you’re here now”
At this moment, he realised how much he missed you. He didn’t even leave for so long, but it was still too much. Not having his daily coffee wasn’t a problem but not having you was an issue. Because you were the little sunshine he needed, especially now.
“So, um,” you started, not sure where to go. You looked behind Remus and saw no one was waiting behind him, “what happened?” you hoped it didn’t come off wrong.
He let out a laugh you acknowledge as an awkward chuckle “I found an editor for my book”
“That’s great!”
He could only smile wider at your excitement “Um, yeah. But the thing is I have writer’s block as you know, so I just spend my entire free time writing because I have a deadline now and I might be a little close to burn out” Remus said the last part with a small laugh that was keeping him away from becoming mentally insane.
You wish you could do something to help him and you maybe weren’t a writer or magician but you had your own coffee shop so you had the ability to just reach for the cookie you discovered was his favourite by the multiple times he bought it and to hand it to him.
“There, it’s maybe not a very useful thing but the better I can do” Remus wished he had the courage to answer that only talking to you was already making him feel better. Fuck, Sirius was right.
Because during the days he spent in college giving literature lessons or locked in his flat writing, he was often on the phone with his best friend and there was a moment when your name may or may not slip from his lips. Sirius begged him to tell him more about you and Remus couldn’t help himself.
So he talked about the way you would always find a new picture to draw on his coffee with the foam. He talked about the way you would always smile and the way it would immediately make him feel better. He talked about the way the weight of your body against his felt and how comforting it was. He talked about the way he wish he could hold you all the time.
All this earned a huge teasing from Sirius for hours, who claimed you had him wrapped around your finger and Remus just denied it. He didn’t love love you, he just… liked you. Or that was what he tried to make himself believe.
“It’s perfect” was all he found to answer. He didn’t have anything else to do but he just stood there as you came back to work. After a few minutes, he left with a quiet “I’ll try to pass by tomorrow”
:・゚✧*:・゚
And he did pass by the next day. He found you in a complete rush and surprisingly alone for a day that was usually the one where you were the busiest. Customers came without a moment for you to calm down a bit.
Remus still didn’t understand why your employee wasn’t by your side to help you but you clearly needed help from someone. So he did something about it, something he didn’t know if you were going to appreciate or not, but he didn’t really care he just wanted to help you like you helped him yesterday.
Without asking you, he joined you behind the counter “How can I help you?” he asked, washing his hands before grabbing a tea towel.
You ran a hand on your forehead, accepting the service he was offering without thinking, you didn’t have any time to think anyway. “Go to the backroom, grab an apron and take the orders, please”
Having Remus by your side gave you an occasion to breathe for a second and you managed to finish the day without too much damage.
“Thank you so much,” you said, plopping down on a booth and grabbing the water bottle Remus was handing to you.
“No problem,” he smiled. You felt a little guilty for monopolising him for a little more than an hour and he could feel it “Hey,” he rested a hand on your knee, kneeling in front of you since you let your head fall to avoid his stare but he wanted to see you, “it’s okay.”
“Sam’s sick– or avoiding me, I don’t know. So he didn’t come today and probably not tomorrow. It was hard, I was alone. He made my life hard lately.” You were tired, both mentally and physically and Remus could tell.
“I’m grateful you helped me,” you said as you reached for your wallet in your coat.
Remus raised an eyebrow “What are you doing?” he asked a little confused.
Your tongue was poking out the corner of your lips as you searched for what you wanted and Remus couldn’t help but stare before shaking his head, shaking his thoughts off. “Paying you.” you handed him two notes. He didn’t take them, telling you there was no way you were giving him money for a little service.
“Let’s drive you home.” You got up and instinctively fell into his chest, letting your head rest against his shoulder. Since the other night, a new form of intimacy settled between the both of you, a little more physical but welcoming and warm. It was the first time you witnessed it and you weren’t going to complain.
He wrapped his arms around your shoulders, leaving a small kiss on your temple. It was like both of your souls were exhausted and drained from the last weeks but they found each other and they were tired together now, making the pain disappear for a bit.
The world around you just faded, you were too close to falling asleep to care about what happened around you and the next thing you know you were in your car in the passenger seat.
You both drove in silence, the movement of the car lulling you and it was with your head against the window that you fell asleep. When Remus pulled over in front of your home, he had to force himself to wake you up, he didn’t want to disturb you, you looked so peaceful.
“Y/n” he whispered, lightly shaking your shoulder. You slowly stirred awake, following Remus who led you to your apartment.
Half asleep, you took your keys from your bag that Remus grabbed and he opened the front door for you. You took off your shoes and walked to the couch, letting yourself fall on the fabric.
You heard Remus’ chuckle behind you “Alright?” he said with a small laugh and you nodded.
“Tired”
“I’m going to leave you now” He didn’t want to, but he didn’t reach his word count for the day and still wanted to have a chance to sleep tonight.
You groaned into the pillow “Okay” you gathered all the energy you had left to sit up “Wait,” you said as Remus started to make his way to the door “do you think you can take your night off tomorrow?”
Remus’ heart missed a beat, was it a second date? “Um, yeah, sure. Why?” He was curious to know what was on your mind.
“Does a restaurant sound good to you? You helped me, I owe you this”
“I’ll come,” you smiled as he spoke “but I’ll pay too!” he couldn’t accept the fact you paid for him, but he could never offer you this, the daily coffee was the only excess he could afford.
You shook your head “You already refused to be paid for helping me, let me invite you. Please”
Remus thought about it, “Okay,” he had a little smile that didn’t leave his lips for the rest of the night. And when he went home, weirdly he had inspiration. He knew what to write with you on his mind, he wasn’t even writing romance but he couldn’t explain it, you were a source of inspiration. As if you appeased him and offered his mind a break, he could finally think and create now. He was so grateful he met you.

You and Remus were in love, you had been in love for 6 years.
Everyone knew you'd be endgame, and your brother hated it, to an extent.
Sirius loved that his little sister was happy, that she had joy in her life after the roughness of their family life. But he was scared, scared because he knew how much Remus would push people away, push himself away.
He didn’t want you hurt. But you were.
~
You found out in October, two weeks before Halloween.
You had been talking with Lily through letters back and forth, discussing your recent morning nausea and sickness.
She had asked when was the last time you and Remus had slept together, strange you considered that question, you replied a week ago at most.
Her letter came back with the words "you might be pregnant, dear...why don't you take this potion i sent along?"
And along with it there was a potion in a small vial with a piece of parchment guiding you through the process.
All you had to do was drink half of the potion and wait for the other half to shift hues.
And sure enough, the once rust coloured potion soon turned blue, signalling your current state.
You were carrying Remus's child, a child you hadn't talked about, a child you were sure you weren't ready for.
~
It was now hallows eve, the day you thought you had worked up the courage to tell Remus.
Children around town had just finished trick or treating and your husband was bringing back the basket with remaining candy.
He came into the bedroom with you and went straight to the shower, promising to return in a bit.
Your eyes heavy with sleep, you sit down on the edge of the bed, waiting for Remus to come out of the bathroom.
He sees them on your trousers before in your eyes, your tears. His brows furrowed in concern and pity as he looked at your face, eyes dull with sorrow and fear, so uncharacteristic of your usual glimmer and joy.
"What's the matter, dove?" He asks, voice slightly hoarse from the drowsiness in the back of his mind.
You don't answer, only look at him like you're out of words. You're thinking, thinking what a little Remus would look like, how they’d have the same nose, probably his same freckles dusting their face, and the same sandy locks of hair with deep roots.
You wonder if he'd want this, a kid, if this could be the one thing Remus would give up the world for.
"Come here, darling" he says and takes your body into his, nuzzling your face in the warmth of his polyester sweater. He understands, he always does.
That's how you sleep that night, unaware of the chaos that was soon to follow.
~
Remus rushed out of bed the moment  the potter's deer patronus knocked on the window.
The white buck stopped at the foot of his bed and let out a call of help, soon disintegrating to mist after.
That night Remus lost three friends, you lost a brother to azkaban and you lost Remus.
He left the morning after. With your heart shattered to pieces, you let him go.
Your mind screamed at you to tell him. Tell him and maybe he'd stay. Tell him and maybe he'd reconsider. But your heart, ever the kind one, ever the selfless one, let him go. In hopes that one day you'd see him again.
Tumblr media
Remus was half expecting you to slam the door in his face. To make a face of absolute disgust and just lock him out. But of course the other half of him was longing to hold you, see you after so long. So it came as a welcome surprise when you widened the door and let him inside.
"Uhm...come in, please, we were expecting you" You said,  trying not to let your voice waver.
Remus felt so awkward. His hands were clammy, his posture was stiff and his jaw was clenched. He felt like he couldn't move, no more than if he had been hit with the petrificus curse.
You weren't in a much better predicament yourself. You could feel your eyes pricking with tears at the mere sight of him. The same man who left you. The man you let go. The man you still loved.
As he made his way inside the house you let your eyes roam across his figure. His hands were littered in large scars, far bigger than those you'd seen before. His face was shrunken, eyes hollower than you remembered. His smile lines were far more prominent now and his sandy brown hair had a few streaks of grey littered throughout.
"Where is the rest of the order? Where's sirius?" Why did you leave? Why are you back? How are you? You had so many questions but the rest were best kept to yourself.
"They're on the way, I was just...early" I wanted to see you.
Remus hated himself for leaving you. He wanted to tell you that. He regretted each night, even more so on full moons. After leaving the realisation of what he had done dawned on him, it was already  too late.
Alas, by the time he had worked up the courage to talk, You were already making your way across the hall to embrace your brother who had just arrived.
When did he get there? How consumed in his thoughts was Remus?
You greeted Sirius with a hug and a look-over of his whole figure. His posture was shrunken, eyes even hollower than Remus's and instead of his signature smirk, only a ghost of a smile was left on his face.
A feeling of guilt consumed you. Your brother was back after azkaban. Innocent. And your mind was all consumed by Remus.
You ushered the rest of the order inside and told Regulus to pack up his things and clear out the living room. The confused and curious glances you got from everyone did little to ease your nerves.
Sirius pulled you aside. You prepared yourself for the conversation you knew was to follow.
“Who’s that?”
It was a valid question, Sirius was well aware that Remus had left that night. After their teary reunion, the werewolf had gotten an earful from the oldest Black. He was shocked and thought that  you had found someone new, unlike Remus, Sirius was quick to notice the similarities between the small boy and you. He deduced that he was your son.
“Uhm- He’s my son.”
You were staring at your feet, and your hands were fidgety.
There was a long pause. The silence was so loud you could hear the clock ticking.
“I…I have a nephew?” His words came out uncertain. Cautious and slow.
With a hum you replied “His name is Regulus. Regulus Jace.” You left out the last name. Legally he was a lupin. And so were you. But it wasn’t that hard to conceal that at hogwarts.
At the mention of his little brother, Sirius seemed to grimace. But he put a smile on.
“You named him after Reggie?-” He asked. And continued as you opened your mouth to answer.
“Who’s..who’s the father?” He didn’t want to assume the worst. He was happy, truely he was. After that “bastard” (as he put it) left you it was only fair. No matter how much he ached to see the two of you together again.
“It is Remus.” You replied, vulnerability lacing your voice.
His face seemed to light up, eyes widening, both in shock and delight. Before he would alert the whole house, however, you let him know one more thing.
“He doesn’t know. Neither of them do. I haven’t told them.”
Your chest felt heavy, and your throat seemed to close up. It was hard for you to talk about. Despite being married you and Remus had never talked about kids, let alone with your friends. The feelings of contempt and guilt surrounded you.
Next thing you know, Sirius is pulling you in for a hug, securely wrapping his arms around you and trying to soothe your worries. His right hand wraps around your back as his left brushes against your hair in a calming manner.
It all comes crashing down. The weight of the lies, the guilt, the fear, the hatred. You cannot hold back the tears that rush down your face. A sob rakes though your body. You feel so much, everything, all at once, joy, relief, contempt, familiarity of an embrace.
But most of all...love. Love you haven’t felt in fourteen years.

Asking You to Stay
Chapter 3 of ‘treacherous’
Pairing: Remus Lupin x fem!Reader
Word Count: 3.4k
Tumblr media
A month or so passed, and you found yourself once again at Grimmauld Place, giving into Sirius’s requests for you to hang out with him. You couldn’t blame him for getting lonely, though, and you were more than happy to oblige him.
You were chatting about how annoyed he was that you insisted on keeping your darling cat, as he didn’t necessarily like Dumpling. But you argued back that Dumpling was a perfect angel whenever he wasn’t around. Probably could smell the dog on him or something, you were convinced.
A knock at the front door signaled that the next order meeting was officially beginning. You stand up as Sirius does.
“Am I sticking around while you try to convince them to accept me?”
“Sorry, darling, but I think it’s best that you let me handle this part, yeah?”
You nodded. “Okay. Just don’t let them talk too much crap about me. Especially Snape.”
He snorted a laugh. “Never. You know what?”
“Hm?”
“Remus is still recovering from last night. It’s why he’s not here now. He could probably stand to see a friendly face,” he suggested, though it felt almost more like an instruction.
Regardless, you smiled at him, giving a nod.
“Sounds fine to me. I’m sure he’s not taking care of himself like he should.”
Sirius snorted. “You’re getting the hang of things, aren’t you? Do you know his address?”
“No.”
Sirius nodded, telling you where to apparate to, and which door to knock on. After a brief goodbye, you headed off. As you stood in front of his door, you started adjusting your clothes before convincing yourself it was a little silly to do so. You were merely showing up for a casual visit. He wouldn’t care if your shirt was a little wrinkled or out of place. You let out a breath, raising your hand to knock on the wooden door. He opened it a moment later, his face melting into a softer expression.
“Hey,” you said, standing on his doorstep. “Sirius told me you could probably use a little company while the order is meeting. Hope I’m not intruding.“
He smiled gently. “You could never.”
He welcomed you in, trying to usher you to the kitchen without you noticing his slight limp. He should have known better than to underestimate your observation skills.
“Whoa,” you said, stopping in front of him at the threshold of the kitchen. “What’s going on with you?”
“Nothing,” he said, way too quickly for that matter.
You raised a brow in his direction, not believing him for a second. He deflated.
“Promise, I’ll be fine. Just don’t worry about it.”
You narrowed your eyes, now.
“Remus, telling me not to worry about you is like telling me not to breathe,” you said with an eye-roll. “I know the moon cycles. What happened?”
He let out a breath. “Let’s sit.”
You followed him to the small kitchen table, sitting next to him as he gently lowered himself into his chair.
“I scratched up my leg pretty badly. But I’ve fixed it up well enough. I’ll be fine.”
“Can I see?”
He swallowed, shifting in his seat. “Can you just take my word for it?”
“Not when you’re trying to hide it from me. All that tells me is that it’s worse than you’re letting on,” you stood from your seat. “I’m going to get some things to fix you up properly. I’d appreciate if you had your leg out for me and elevated someplace when I return.”
You were back to your apartment before he could argue to gather your supplies. Remus let out a slow breath, then stood. He looked down at himself, realizing he’d need shorts if he didn’t intend on traumatizing you by sitting around in his underwear. He limped into his bedroom, pulling off his pants and tugging on some shorts that he usually would only wear to bed. They’d had to do for the purposes of you inspecting his leg. He glanced down at the half-assed wrappings around the injury, knowing you’d scold him for it. Too late now.
He hobbled back into his living room, sitting on the couch with his leg extended onto the coffee table. It wasn’t long before you flashed back into his home with a pop.
“Remus?” your voice called from the kitchen.
“In here,” he replied.
He came into view as you rounded the corner, and you smirked at the tattered shorts he wore to bare his leg. The smirk faded just as quickly when you saw how his wrappings laid on his leg.
“You called this well enough?” you said, sitting next to him on the couch.
He huffed. “I knew you’d say that.”
“Good. You’re learning you can’t get away with things,” you said, snorting out a laugh. “Do you mind if I unwrap this?”
You set down all of your things on the coffee table, looking back at his face. He nodded, looking a little nervous. You started unwrapping his leg, grimacing at the severity of it. The scratch started just above his knee and extended halfway down his calf. You wondered how he could possibly walk around like this was nothing. You immediately started cleaning around the wounds, muttering small apologies any time you heard a sound from him.
“I’m going to apply an extract that is… I don’t want to say experimental,” you began.
“Do you plan to make this worse for me?” he asked, humor lacing his voice.
“Never. But, it won’t feel great as it works it’s magic. I’ve only used it on small cuts for myself, so this is the first time I’ll be trying it on something more severe,” you explained, glancing at him. “Is that okay with you?”
He nodded. “I trust you.”
“Okay, good,” you said with a breath. “Just… Hang on, okay? It’ll hurt like hell for a moment, but it should help a great deal.”
He nodded, bracing himself with his hands holding to the couch cushions. You pulled out a small cloth, saturating it in the extracted liquid you kept in a small decanter. You once again gave a short apology, though this time in advance, and pressed the wetted cloth to the wounds on his leg. He groaned in protest of the feeling, and you saw his hands holding to the cushions hard as the extract started working. You let the cloth lay over the wound with some pressure from your hand for about a minute before finally pulling it away.
You glanced up at Remus, whose eyes were still squeezed shut, then back at his leg. Well, your extract had certainly worked, at least. You felt satisfied as you set the cloth down on the table.
“Remus,” you called. “Does it still hurt?”
“Not right now. Are you finished?”
“Just about. Would you like to see the results before I wrap it again?”
He opened his eyes, one at a time, looking down at the gash in his leg. His eyes widened in surprise upon seeing that there was no longer a gash.
“How did you—”
“Told you, this extract does miracles.”
“Incredible,” he mumbled, inspecting his leg more closely. “It’s nearly all closed up.”
“Which is great news for me. I was hoping I’d be able to test this sometime before it was needed in the field or in an emergency.”
He smiled at you, “Well, I’m glad my affliction could help your experiment.”
You rolled your eyes playfully, smacking his shoulder.
“Something really cool about this stuff,” you added, holding up the solution, “is that there’s no scarring. Not that your scars aren’t cool as hell, but I figure you might like that you won’t have any more if you don’t want them.”
His eyes widened. “Really?”
“Really.”
He smiled softly, merely nodding as he looked back at his leg. You re-wrapped his leg, this time making sure it was done effectively, being sure to tell him that.
“Thank you,” he said, leaning back into the couch.
“Of course. Besides the leg, how are you feeling? You look exhausted.”
He nodded. “I am. It certainly takes its toll mentally, the transformation.”
“Can I make you some tea? Or… Well, is there anything that would help you get some rest?”
He shook his head. “No, but that’s alright. I should be feeling better tomorrow.”
You hummed, looking around the room. He had a full bookshelf, and plenty of photos around the room. It was when you noticed his record player that your interest was piqued.
“How about some music?” you asked.
He smiled, his eyes closing as his head lolled back.
“I wouldn’t be opposed.”
You stood quickly, pulling out an instrumental album that looked familiar. You put the record in it’s place, dropping the needle. Once it started playing, you adjusted the volume a bit, then wandered to his bookshelf. He watched as you looked at each spine with only one eye open, curious to see what you’d choose, if anything. You scoured the shelf, seeing several titles that looked enticing, but ultimately deciding on a poetry book that looked fairly well-loved. You pulled the book out, inspecting it quickly.
“You read this often?” you asked, turning to show him the book you held.
He nodded. “I used to. It’s been a while.”
“Do you mind if I—”
“Not at all.”
You smiled softly, wandering back to the couch as you flipped through some pages. You settled in next to Remus once again, and he looked over your shoulder as you tried to decide on a good place to start.
“Are these all Muggle works?”
“Yes,” he said softly. “I found it in an old shop when I was in my early twenties, and became quite taken with it. It’s a collection of all different kinds of poems by different authors.”
You hummed, landing on a page with a name that almost sounded familiar.
“Auden,” you read the last name. “I feel like I’ve seen that somewhere before.”
“It’s a wonderful little poem,” Remus said, looking at the page. “I’ve always liked that one quite a lot.”
“Would you like me to read it for you?”
He paused, then nodded. “That would be nice.”
“Alright. Close your eyes again. Might as well get some rest while I’m talking, yeah?”
He chuckled softly. “Right.”
You leaned back, right next to him as you started reading over the soft sounds of the record playing.
“Looking up at the stars, I know quite well that, for all they care, I can go to hell, but on earth indifference is the least we have to dread from man or beast. How should we like it were stars to burn with a passion for us we could not return? If equal affection cannot be, let the more loving one be me,” you sighed softly, letting the words wash over you. “Admirer as I think I am of stars that do not give a damn, I cannot, now I see them, say I missed one terribly all day. Were all stars to disappear or die, I should learn to look at an empty sky and feel its total dark sublime, though this might take me a little time.”
You hummed, reading it again silently to yourself.
“That is a lovely poem.”
“One of my favorites in the book,” he replied, his eyes still closed. “Would you mind doing another? You have a lovely reading voice.”
You smiled, fighting the warmth rising in your cheeks. “Of course.”
You chose a few more, reading each one with equal awe at the imagery painted in words. You only stopped when you felt a pressure on your shoulder. You looked down in the middle of reading a particularly long poem, seeing Remus’ head against your shoulder. His breathing came in soft and even, signaling that he’d fallen asleep.
You reached up before you could think about it, brushing some of his hair away from his forehead as he dozed off, smiling softly when he nuzzled into your shoulder a little more as you touched him. You shut the book, leaning your head against his and closing your eyes as his soft breathing washed you in a sense of peace. You smiled to yourself, slowly drifting off yourself.
You waited anxiously the next week for news of whether or not you got into the order. You really hoped so, and for more than one reason.
Obviously it would be nice to join something that is all about fighting on the right side. And you were sure you’d do really well in a role like that, helping not only with the fight, but with patching people up afterwards.
But a secret, much more selfish part of you, just wanted an excuse to spend more time with Remus. After you both woke up on his couch, you had definitely been a little more… close to one another. Especially after you teased him a little for how pink his cheeks got when he woke up with his head on your chest. You met for tea in your apartment twice that week, under the guise of making sure his leg was healing. Even though you both knew it was practically fully healed after the first twenty four hours.
Suffice to say that you were ecstatic when Sirius came knocking on the door of your apartment with a smile and news of your acceptance into the order.
You stepped into Grimmauld Place, following behind Sirius like a lost puppy. It was strange to hear so many voices in the place. You were quite used to it being fairly quiet, with the only upset coming from either Sirius or Remus saying something that got the other worked up. Which, to be fair, was pretty often. But it was nothing like this.
He led you to the dining room, and it was pretty much full. You noticed some familiar faces: Remus, Dumbledore, Moody, Molly and Arthur, and… Snape. You nudged Sirius’ shoulder when you saw him.
“Of course he had to be at my first meeting,” you whispered.
Sirius quirked a brow, a distasteful look on his face as he shrugged. A few heads turned towards you, Snape’s face immediately showing recognition and quite a bit of surprise.
“Everyone, our newest member,” Sirius began, shoving you in front of him a bit, announcing your name to everyone who didn’t know you.
You got some smiles from those you knew, and some questioning looks from those who didn’t.
“Ah,” Dumbledore said kindly, standing from his seat. “It’s nice to see you again. I didn’t expect you to join us, but it was quite the pleasant surprise when we received news from Sirius that you’d shown interest.”
“Nice to see you again, too, sir,” you said plainly, giving him a small smile.
He turned to others at the table. “As some of you may recall, Y/N always had a special affinity for herbology. She’s quite talented, and has volunteered not only to join us on missions when they arise, but also to work as a healer of sorts for us. She specializes in medicinal herbs and plants.”
You received a warm smile from both Molly and Arthur, and a little grin of approval from Remus as the others nodded their heads to what Dumbledore had told them.
“Come along, dear,” Sirius said quietly, pulling out a chair for you next to a woman you’d never seen. “Tonks! How are you?”
You looked at the woman as Sirius did, and she smiled brightly. “Better than ever.”
“You’ve met our newest member?”
“No,” she shook her head, holding out a hand to shake. “Nice to meet you. Name’s Tonks.”
You smiled, shaking her hand and introducing yourself. “It’s nice to meet you. Cool hair.”
She reached up, running a hand through the pink locks with a smirk. “Thanks. You know, you’re awfully cute…”
“Careful,” Sirius started. “Don’t want to flirt with Mooney’s girl too much.”
“Oi!” you exclaimed. “Cut that out.”
“Ah, that’s a shame,” she said before you could scold Sirius further. “Always gotta like the straight girls.”
“Well, nobody said she was…”
“Sirius. May I remind you that you are not running a dating service,” you said quickly, quirking a brow.
He rolled his eyes, leaning back in his seat just as Dumbledore started the meeting officially. You smacked him gently on the chest, receiving a playful smile and a more appropriate sitting position as a result.
You listened intently as Dumbledore updated you all on the most recent missions and other pertinent information. Though, as he started assigning missions to people who weren’t you, you took the chance to look around the table. You tried to commit a few names and faces to memory, though you knew you’d probably forget them within the hour until you actually spoke to them. You finally caught Remus’ eye as your gaze drifted across from where you and Sirius sat, and he flashed you a small smile in response. One that, unfortunately, didn’t go unnoticed. Though this time, the nudging of your arm came from your right side.
“Lucky guy,” Tonks said quietly, giving you a cheeky smirk before glancing at Remus, who still had his eyes on you.
You merely rolled your eyes with a smile, tuning back into the meeting. You glanced at him once more, both of you turning away with shy smiles when you made eye contact again. And every other time your gazes met in the middle during the meeting.
As soon as it was over, you stood, determined to get some tea to calm your nerves. It wasn’t necessarily that you were terribly anxious about the meeting or the subject matter… it was just quite overwhelming to take in all that information at once. Not to mention that it all happened in a house you’d grown accustomed to being fairly quiet.
You stood in the kitchen, waiting for the kettle to whistle, when you heard footsteps approaching. You turned, seeing a familiar pink-haired woman standing in the doorway.
“Tea?” You offer.
She nods quickly. “Yes. Please.”
You get an extra cup from the cupboard, setting it next to yours before she comes into view again, this time much closer.
“So… Lupin?”
You glanced sideways at her. “Have you been talking with Sirius?”
She laughed softly. “A little. But I also have a fully functional pair of eyes.”
“Nothing’s happening between us, I can assure you,” you smile back a little bit.
“Sure,” she says sarcastically. “And I didn’t try flirting with you the second you sat at the table today. You know, I can’t blame you. And I’m not judging. He’s cute. It’s a shame I’m gay or else I might have approached him myself.”
You laughed at that, shaking your head. “Come on.”
“Seriously. I checked him out when I first saw him, I won’t lie,” she holds her hands up in surrender. “And for the record, I think you two would be cute. You can’t be much younger than me, can you?”
“How old are you?”
“23.”
“Yeah, just about the same age, then. What are the chances?”
She smiled. “You’re sure you’re really his girl? Cause…”
You sighed with a smile. “If things don’t happen between me and him, I’ll hit you up.”
“Great. I hope it crashes and burns.”
“Right,” you laugh heartily. “Nothing has happened yet, but… And don’t you dare tell Sirius this, but I do really like him. He’s just… So sweet. Very different from most of the men I know. He likes old records and poetry and he’s so sweet and soft-spoken without being a total doormat. I don’t know. I just think he’s wonderful.”
She smiled softly, tilting her head, watching as I poured the tea. “Sounds like you’ve got it pretty bad.”
“Unfortunately I think you might be right in that.”
She nudged your shoulder. “It’s not so unfortunate, you know? He clearly likes you too.”
“I don’t know.”
“I do,” she said proudly. “I’m great at reading people. He definitely likes you.”
You handed her her tea wordlessly, sipping on your own. She shook her head with a small smile.
“You’re both stubborn as mules, too,” she laughed. “You’d be perfect together.”
Sirius poked his head in a moment later, giving you both a cheeky smile.
“Just what are you two ladies talking about?”
“Boy troubles,” Tonks said quickly.
Sirius quirked a brow, and you smacked her arm. They both laughed at you for that.
“Anything to do with our Mooney?” Sirius asked.
You laughed, hiding your face behind your mug. “Shut up.”

summary: remus is left alone as you and the marauders focus on the animagus potion. he begins to see through your excuses and realizes his friends have all been lying to him.
notes: stupid scenes between the marauders, angsty emo remus, a few swears, vague threats, not my greatest work tbh i'm distracted by the impending school year but this is a great escape

the more that you say, the less i know wherever you stray, i follow
for the umpteenth time this week, remus was asking where you were
“oh, she’s with sirius,” james replied nonchalantly, not bothering to look up from his transfiguration textbook.
remus frowned. “again? they’ve been spending a lot of time together lately.”
james shrugged. “well, they’re friends, aren’t they? friends spend time together.” james, being the token oblivious friend amongst the marauders, hadn’t realized that remus was probing out of jealousy concern for his friend’s wellbeing. james thought remus had begun to suspect their plan and was doing all he could to throw remus off their trail.
remus took a seat beside james, who still didn’t meet remus’ eye. james pushed his glasses up his nose awkwardly.
“friends spend time together… friends, right? or are they, y’know…”
“are they what? conspiring behind our backs? no, of course not!” james laughed shrilly, finally looking up at remus with a poorly concealed expression of distress plastered across his flushed face. “no, they’re just- uh, getting some alone time. you know how busy the common rooms can be nowadays,” james chuckled.
there was nobody else in the common room.
“right…” remus nodded, pursing his lips. his mind brought him back to the last time he’d seen you, curled up in sirius’s lap. “alone time is good, i suppose. have you- erm, have you all decided to get some alone time recently? i feel like i haven’t seen you all in ages.”
“yeah, m’sorry about that, mate. i’ve been real busy with… transfigurations,” james lied.
remus raised his eyebrows. “mcgonagall says you’re one of the best transfigurations students she’s ever had.”
“does she?” james squeaked. “i didn’t know that! well, peter and sirius and y/n have all been very busy, and- oh, i forgot! i’ve got to go… woo evans.” james peeked at the grandfather clock by the dormitory stairs. “would you look at that? i’m already a minute late! bye, moony! see you ‘round!”
james sprinted out of the common room, abandoning his textbook and satchel on the couch. remus knew it was invasive, but he flipped through james’ reading. it wasn’t the standard transfigurations textbook; he’d been lying about working on something for class. james had lied to remus’ face.
was he lying about everything else too? about you and sirius… being friends? friends? were you friends, or friends?
remus had never wanted to know something and not wanted to know something so badly before. but it wasn’t like he could ask you; it was as if you’d been avoiding him entirely. had he done something wrong?
besides, he thought, it’s none of my business what she does in her free time. even though she usually reserves that time for me. and she can hook up with whoever she wants, even if it’s my best friend. remus winced. and i can’t even be upset with sirius because he doesn’t know how i feel. fuck.
--
breaking multiple wizarding laws all at once should probably be considered a bad thing. emphasis on the ‘probably,’ because you were having the time of your life sneaking and stealing throughout the castle.
you and sirius were the designated researchers; james was busy with quidditch captain training and peter had been flooded with new tutoring requests. fortunately, you were proficient in the dewey decimal system while sirius was an experienced curfew-breaker. the two of you were quite the efficient duo when it came to stealing borrowing books from the restricted section.
“are you kidding me?” sirius hissed, rubbing his eyes to make sure he was reading the page correctly. “keep a mandrake leaf in your mouth for a month?”
“what did you think? this is why being an animagus is ministry regulated! it’s hard! and bloody dangerous, if you’ve forgotten!”
sirius looked at you quizzically. “what, you’re gonna back out now?”
you pulled you head back, incredulous. “are you kidding me? i’m the one who did all the research in the first place and talked to remus and am the potions prodigy here. watch it, black. you need me.”
sirius rolled his eyes. “whatever, princess.”
you whacked him. “keep it down, princess.”
it seemed you had spoken too late. pittering footsteps were fastly approaching, raising goosebumps on your arms. “shit shit shit fuck, it’s ms. norris!” you slammed the book shut and tucked it under your armpit.
sirius glared at you. “did you have to shut it so loudly?”
“oh my godric, can you just- run, idiot!”
sirius wrapped an arm around you, tucking the cloak securely to your bodies as you swiftly made your escape. sirius was about to push open the library doors when filch burst from the corridor outside. you slammed sirius back, pinning him to the wall with one arm propping yourself up and the other gripping the restricted book with such force that your hands were trembling.
sirius looked down at you bashfully. he was usually the one pinning girls against walls.
you didn’t bat an eyelash at him. your head was swiveled, your eyes wide and trained on filch’s receding figure. “students out of bed! students in the library!” he yelled, though there was nobody around to listen to him.
deciding it was safe to leave, you grabbed sirius’ hand and yanked him through the door. as you ran through the corridor, shoes echoing against the stone walls, the heavy wooden doors slammed shut behind you. you could hear filch on your tail, and the two of you sprinted desperately in the direction of the common room.
“wait! wait,” you panted. “should we go straight for the dungeons and grab the mandrake leaves tonight? we’re already out of bed, so we might as well, right?”
sirius paused. “nah, we’ve got potions tomorrow. i’ll hook up with someone in the ingredients cabinet and slip a couple. let’s just put the book away.”
you snorted. “you? hook up with someone in the cabinet? please, as if slughorn would trust you to step foot near it in the first place. i’ll snag the leaves.”
--
slughorn was in a particularly jovial mood today. “good morning, miss y/l/n!” he beamed as you stepped foot in the classroom. slightly caught off guard, you waved hesitantly.
“sit here!” james hissed, waving at you so aggressively that his curls were bouncing. you grinned, slipping in beside him. “did you guys do it last night?”
“yeah, but sirius was so loud and filch nearly caught us! how is it that you four go sneaking around when sirius is so damn noisy?”
from behind you, remus chewed on his bottom lip, staring furiously at a dried mystery substance on his desk. it looked like his suspicions were correct. james had lied to him twice. but he finally got his answer—you and sirius were hooking up. in the library, of all places! godric, he’d never be able to set foot in there without thinking about you the defiling acts committed against the bookshelves.
“hey, beautiful.” sirius purred as he claimed the seat beside remus. “g’morning james, moony.”
you laughed delicately, and remus’ heart pulled. he considered himself lucky enough to be able to hear your laughter; he wished he could be the cause. maybe that was selfish of him.
“how come moony gets a cool nickname and we don’t?” james whined, twisting to face the two boys behind him. he rested one hand on your desk to hold himself steady, and for the first time, remus found himself jealous of an appendage.
“it’s ‘cos you’re not cool, jamie.”
james pressed his hands to his cheeks like he was horrified. “you’re being mean, y/n!” he huffed and crossed his arms, mimicking toddler-like mannerisms. you and sirius laughed. even remus found himself chuckling—he could never not be entertained by james’ caricatures.
“jamie,” sirius mocked, holding james’ chin to turn his face up. “aw, jaime, you look so pretty today, jaime.”
james recoiled. “yeah, it’s not as cute when you’re the one saying it. i take it back; i don’t need a nickname.”
sirius smiled smugly.
james swung an arm around your shoulders. “but you, however, can call me whatever you want.” he winked comically.
you groaned. “get your grimy hands off me!” you pushed him away, pretending to dust your shoulders. “absolutely disgusting, you are.”
remus clenched his jaw. why did he have to befriend two of the most charming, flirty bachelors in the entire school?
“hey, where’s peter?” sirius whispered as slughorn cleared his throat, signaling the beginning of his lesson.
“he’s sick,” you blurted.
“yep! food poisoning. he thinks it was the raspberry jam,” sirius added.
james’s face dropped. “i ate the raspberry jam!”
you kicked james’s shin. you pulled him down to whisper in his ear. “he’s getting the crystal phials, jamie. c’mon, keep up.”
james blushed, pulling back. remus sighed. first sirius, and now james? to be fair, he should’ve known better. you were beautiful and witty and charismatic. he was hardly the first person to fall in love with be interested in you. it was naive to think that you’d just wait around for him to muster up the courage to confess his feelings, if he ever had the courage to.
that wasn’t very gryffindor of him.
slughorn clapped his hands excitedly. “now, page 482 will list the potion ingredients! for those with last year’s edition, make sure you switch out the bay leaves for mandrake leaves; the ingredients list is a little outdated…”
you looked over at james; his wide eyes mirrored yours. “i’ve got it,” you mouthed, knowing james wouldn’t have caught on otherwise. he nodded affirmatively.
lingering slightly longer than the other students, you cursed yourself for overlooking the most important part of this all: storage. you’d successfully obtained four extra mandrake leaves, but you had nowhere to store them. your skirt didn’t have pockets, and it’d be incredibly awkward to stuff them in your shirt.
“miss y/l/n, is everything alright back there?” slughorn called. his heavy footsteps sounded closer and closer to you.
“uh, yes! i had trouble finding the leaves, that’s all!”
when you turned your head around, you found slughorn in front of you with a suspicious expression. “the leaves were previously pulled out so that students wouldn’t have trouble finding them,” he said slowly.
you gulped.
“not to worry, m’dear!” slughorn chortled. “we all have our off days. now, you best get started on your potion.”
you shoved your hand up the sleeve of your robe to hide the large cluster of leaves in your fist, hoping nobody would ask why one of your arms had suddenly disappeared.
when you returned, sirius quirked his head questioningly. you nodded once. pretending to dig through your satchel for a quill, you quietly slipped in the four mandrake leaves.
--
“james has been awfully quiet recently,” lily commented offhandedly, brushing her hair in the dormitory mirror. “i think it’s been—what, like three weeks?—since he’s last asked me out.”
mary picked her head up from her focused nail painting and smiled mischievously. “is that a good thing or a bad thing?”
“a- a good thing, of course! i don’t want anything to do with him. he’s such a cocky, arrogant, know-it-all,” lily huffed.
“and what about you?” dorcas watched as you began to fiddle with your fingers. “you haven’t been as chatty as usual. is there something going on between you two?”
lily stiffened.
“no, godric no! we’re not like that at all.”
lily visibly relaxed.
marlene gasped. “oh my merlin, is it sirius? he’s been so weird during quidditch practices lately, and i always see you two whispering and… y’know,” she waggled her eyebrows. “you’ve been very affectionate as of late.”
you groaned, covering your face and throwing yourself backward on your bed. “argh, why does everyone think i’m getting with james or sirius? there’s literally nothing that could-”
“don’t you start,” lily chided. “even remus noticed! it can’t be a coincidence that he got all grumpy at the same time you started getting closer to james and sirius. he’s obviously jealous!”
you giggled nervously. “jealous? w- why would he be jealous?”
dorcas moaned, dragging it on in frustration. “i swear, you’re so thick sometimes! remus likes you; he has for like, forever!”
you threw your hands in the air. “no, he hasn’t! he would’ve said something if he did. plus, he’s been ignoring me for weeks. if he liked me, why would he act like i’ve contracted the plague? every time i try talking to him, he has some flimsy excuse to avoid me and that’s no way to treat somebody you ‘like.’”
marlene slammed her hand on her knee. “i am this close,” she pinched her fingers together, “to slapping the stupid out of you! he’s jealous! do i have to spell it out for you? j-e-a-l-”
“i know how to spell jealous!” you snapped. “sorry, it’s just- i really miss him, y’know? i don’t know how to fix this when he won’t even let me explain.”
“bloody hell…” lily set her hairbrush down. “you like remus, don’t you!” she pointed to you excitedly.
“no, i don’t! what are y’talking about?” you screeched, jumping up and scrambling away from your gleeful friends. “nooo! leave me alone!” “aha! you so do! you like remus!” mary screamed, clapping her hands.
“you miss him, don’t you? you miss your loverboy?” marlene pressed her hands to her heart and pretended to swoon.
dorcas jumped up and down. “does this mean we get to play matchmaker?”
you shrieked, waving your hands in dissent. “no! you can’t tell him! please don’t tell him, it’ll ruin everything. and james, sirius, and peter will have to deal with it too—oh, just please keep it a secret.”
the girls looked disappointed but agreed. lily sighed understandingly. “we’ll let you handle it at your own speed. but that doesn’t mean we won’t bother you about it!”
you were in the middle of a complaint when you heard glass shattering. your head turned towards the sound immediately, eyebrows furrowing. when you opened the door, you saw shards of—what was that? crystal phial pieces were on the ground right outside your door.
peter.
it must’ve been peter. peter was a notorious gossip. if he’d heard anything…
--
“i heard something!” peter announced triumphantly to james and sirius. remus, as usual, had been left out of the equation.
“hey, where you all headed off to?” remus looked up from his book, already knowing the answer. his friends were going somewhere—anywhere, really—that was without him.
sirius cleared his throat. “erm, peter is having problems with his-”
“-menstruation!” james clarified, much to the horror of his three friends.
“excuse me?” remus and peter said in tandem.
james coughed. “what i mean is…”
“what our pal james here means is that… madam pomfrey gave us detention so now we’re, uh- cleaning the menstruation… products,” sirius lied poorly.
“right,” remus sighed. it was an terrible excuse, and all the marauders knew it, but remus had grown sick of probing his friends for real answers. they had made it clear they wanted nothing to do with him. even you, who had made the most effort to keep in touch with him recently, had clearly put a wall between the two of you. it was like you didn’t trust him anymore, or like you only stayed with him out of pity.
he didn’t have much going for him these days.
“what? what did you hear?” james gasped, jumping to his feet at peter’s entrance. “c’mon, out with it!” james was an infamous gossip.
peter lowered his voice conspiratorily. “i may or may not have heard y/n talk about her huge crush on moony!”
“what?” james shouted. sirius slapped a hand over james’ mouth as his shocked exclamation echoed around the potions dungeons.
“godric, shut up, would you?” sirius snipped.
“that’s rich, coming from you.” james mumbled the best he could from behind sirius’ hand.
“and this just confirms my theory that remus is jealous! even lily thinks so,” peter said smugly. he set down three crystal phials (and pulled a fourth replacement from his pocket) before crossing his arms in satisfaction.
“what?” james whisper-shouted. “jealous? why would moony be jealous?”
“beacuse,” sirius drawled sarcastically, “he likes her. nah, that’s an understatement. are you bloody daft? he’s been in love with her since second year!”
james’ jaw dropped. “no way!”
peter rubbed his temple. he opened his mouth, probably to say something sarcastic, but was interrupted by a new presence.
“hello, folks!” you chirped, more bubbly than usual.
“what’s up with you?” sirius probed, taking note of the way your lips were forcibly pressed together as you tried to hide a sneaky smile.
“oh, nothing. i’m just… having a good day, ‘s all!
“hey, can i talk to you?” it was dinner, and after a good meal, remus finally decided to talk to you. he jogged after you as he saw you leaving the great hall, planning on confronting you. well, it wasn’t as much of a confrontation as it was a need for reassurance.
“oh, of course! is something wrong?” you asked innocently, looking up at him through pinched eyebrows. he loomed over you—as he did most people; remus was extremely tall—and you craned your neck to look him in the eyes, subconsciously stepping backward until you found your spine pressed against the cool stone brick.
remus’ heart twisted slightly. for some reason, he felt guilty for making you worry. “everything’s fine, love. i was just wondering- well, you and the boys have been busy lately. and last time we talked, the subject was-”
remus was cut off by the sound of a clique of giggling first years, presumably making their way back to their dorms. their footsteps slowed momentarily as one of them pointed towards you, eliciting another wave of giggles and whispers. you realized that to an outsider, it would seem as if you and remus were an impatient couple having their way with each other right outside the doorway of the great hall.
remus seemed to have come to the same realization because he pulled you a little closer and shielded you from the curious first years, ushering you into a quieter corridor. he breathed shakily, continuing where he’d left off. “the subject of our last conversation was… unusual and perhaps distressing, i know. and i just- the last thing i want to do is make you uncomfortable, and you’ve been avoiding me and i just have to know if i’ve done anything wrong? would you- of course, i don’t blame you if you want some space, or to not see me again; i don’t expect any kindness from you and you don’t owe me any-”
“remus fucking john bloody lupin, don’t you dare go there; to think so lowly of me,” you grinned, “is truly hurtful, it really is. you’ll never be rid of me, remus lupin. even if you were a dementor—actually, that’s not- ah, well you get my point.”
remus smiled softly. he raised an eyebrow. “i don’t think so; can you repeat that for me?”
you made a disappointed face at him, crossing your arms. “fine, be that way. y’know, i don’t get all mushy-gushy with just anyone, so don’t push it!”
remus snorted. “‘mushy-gushy…’ damn it, you’re so adorable,” he mumbled to himself.
“what was that? can you repeat that for me?” you repeated remus’ words in the same tone he’d used just before.
remus blushed. “alright, that’s enough now. just… i hope you know that you can talk to me about anything, okay?”
it was like you were melting in the richness of his sweet gaze. “okay,” you whispered.
that turned out to be entirely untrue. “i’ve got the dew, and remus is still none the wiser!” you bragged, holding out a pristine glass, which did in fact, contain dew untouched by sunlight nor human feet.
“in no way do i mean to doubt your excellence and incredible skill,” sirius marveled, “but how in godric’s great name did you manage to pull that one off?”
“i didn’t say you needed me for no reason, now did i?” you smirked, referring back to the night in the library where sirius had doubted your dedication to the animagus plan. “but, if you must know, being slughorn’s favorite does have its perks.”
james visibly recoiled. your eyes widened. “no, not like that, james! ugh, you’re disgusting! i asked for after-class dungeon access and apparently, there’s a good source of structured water in one of the office crevices.”
peter whooped. “you broke into an office too? sick!” he was busy celebrating your achievement before he sat up with a realization. “oh, and i’ve got the chrysalises as well!” he pulled out a slightly squished sachet. “sorry, i may have sat on it.”
sirius licked his lips, admiring peter’s treasure. “death’s-head dawk moths… i don’t understand how you two are getting these things!”
it was peter’s turn to gloat. “hagrid owed me a favor,” he said cryptically.
james flipped through a couple pages of the book you’d been following along with. “right, so we put the leaves in and one of our hairs… then a teaspoon of the dew… and then the chrysalis after seven days. after seven days? we’ve miscalculated!”
the room burst into panicked chaos. if only remus was here to sort out the problem, as he usually would.
“it’s fine, we can just do the first steps today and come back next week.”
“but where would we store the phials?”
“what if someone takes them?”
“what if they break?”
“if we misread this step, who’s to say we haven’t messed up the others?”
“stop it!” you shouted. “just spit out the damn leaf. i’ll come back next week since i have dungeons access; in the meanwhile, we’ll store it in that crevice i found.”
the three marauders sighed in relief. as you began the potion process, you heard sirius whimper.
“my hair! i have to pull out my hair!”
--
“i thought we were going to the library today?” remus smiled nervously from the common room couch as he watched you scramble to pack up your belongings much more hastily than someone who should’ve been on their way to spend a relaxing afternoon with their best friend.
you winced. “oh merlin, i’m so sorry, rem. i totally forgot; i’m actually busy. like, right at this exact moment, unfortunately. so i won’t be able to make it.” you smiled thinly.
remus’ faint smile fell—no, collapsed—into an insecure frown. “b- but we talked about this just yesterday! i don’t understand… i thought everything was good between us? are you sure i haven’t- there’s really nothing going on?” unbeknownst to you, remus’ mind had been overanalyzing every interaction with you every night since you’d left his room in an unusually negative matter during your potions study session.
“no, you’ve been wonderful, rem. but, i really should get going! i have to tutor somebody. erm, it’s malfoy.”
remus narrowed his eyes. “you’re tutoring lucius? in what subject? are you sure that’s a good idea? you know he’s a-”
“i’ve got it, alright!” you snapped. you took a step back instantly, placing distance between you and remus. “i’m so sorry, i don’t know where that came from. i’ve been a little frazzled recently, i’m so sorry,” you mumbled, glancing behind your back at remus one final time before running out the portrait hole.
remus bit his lip. don’t cry, he chided, that’s stupid. there’s no reason to fucking cry. remus couldn’t help it, though. it was true that you’d been frazzled, but it seemed to only be around remus. you were perfectly content spending time with the other marauders; in fact, it seemed like you’d been spending more time with his friends than he had. you’d never been that close to them before! and lucius? lucius malfoy, the pureblood snob with perfect grades? you were clearly lying about something. that made two people—james and now, you.
as you descended the stairs to the dungeons, head whipping around cautiously as you slipped pass the slytherin common room entrance, you shook your head sadly. you were a horrible liar, and you knew you could only keep up the facade for so long before remus started to suspect something. it was by sheer luck that he hadn’t already found out you and the other marauders’ plan.
you tried to calm the feeling of your stomach dropping to the ground by calculating the steps you’d have to take in the next few days to brew the potions. you mumbled the instructions to yourself. “seven days with the chrysalis… we visit back on thursday… electrical storm… red… bloody hell!”
it was lucius—the real lucius—in front of you, protected by his slytherin gang. you nodding in greeting, hoping to simply turn away and go about your business, but of course, that was unrealistic.
“litle y/n…” lucius raised his eyebrows. “what are you doing down here, all alone, by the dungeons? waiting for someone, perhaps?”
you batted your eyelashes and plastered on a fake smile. “lucius. bellatrix. barty. fancy seeing the three of you here,” you deflected.
bellatrix sneered. “i didn’t realize we were on a first-name basis, itty gryffindor.”
barty nodded along, always ready to agree with bellatrix. “yeah, that’s pretty bold of you.”
“well, i’m a gryffindor, am i not? bold is implied with the house.”
“your house,” lucius mocked. “might i remind you, you’re on slytherin grounds. i’d watch your back, if i were you.”
“oh yeah? and what’s that supposed to mean, lucius?” you spat.
“nothing at all, darling,” bellatrix intervened smoothly, the corner of her mouth twitching upwards maliciously. “but surely, you know how things are these days… your type ought to be more cautious.”
you glared at her, eyes wandering her face as if to memorize it. you gave no time to barty or lucius. bellatrix had always been, and still was the one in charge.
clutching your wand a little tighter, you turned your back on the three and continued to the dungeons, feeling their stares linger on your back. against your will, you shivered.
--
you and peter were both sitting on the floor of the boy’s dorm, sketching and pointing excitedly to a piece of parchment containing weather diagrams that you’d begged professor sinstra for. james who had just taken a shower—evidenced by his fogged up glasses and unruly curls—was grumbling to sirius about how quidditch practice had been canceled due to the lightning storm predicted for tomorrow.
sirius was hardly listening, rubbing oils into the roots of his hair.
“hey, save some for me!” james scolded. sirius had recently gotten james hooked on haircare.
you and peter snickered at the petty argument, prompting sirius to turn around and stick his tongue out at you. that was the scene remus walked in on—his four friends laughing and lounging around his room, without him.
remus cleared his throat. all four sets of eyes shot over to him, who didn’t even bother to hide his hurt. it was bad enough that his three best friends had spent nearly an entire month excluding him, but to see you replacing the fourth spot meant for him? to see you become closer to his three friends than you’d ever been with him? remus thought it would be stupid to cry before this, but now, it seemed like a justified reaction.
“h- hey,” he rasped, swallowing thickly and clutching the strap of his satchel. his knuckles grew pale.
you froze, watching as remus took in what was before him. james, half-naked with a towel slung low around his waist, sirius, preening in front of a mirror, and peter, who was huddled closer to you than remus had been for a month. you were completely unfazed by it all.
remus could feel his heart crumble. how many times had you been with an undressed james for it to become a casual sight for you? how often had you been seeing sirius that watching him in all his handsomeness didn’t draw as much as a blush from you? how much had you and peter been touching this past month to make the sliver of space between you into a comfortable norm? and how come, in all the years remus had been your best friend, he’d never made it this far?
it was impossible not to see the tremble of remus’ bottom lip, which he bit harshly, before he turned on his heel and left the dorm with a slamming of the door. you scrambled to your feet immediately, chasing after him.
“remus!”
he said nothing.
“rem, where are you going? hey, come back!” you had begun running in order to keep up to remus’ long strides, catching him just before the portrait hole closed.
“sorry, i’ve… got homework,” he lied.
“no, you don’t. you did it all on monday, i watched you. don’t lie to me, rem-”
“lie to you?” remus hissed, turning around forcefully and grabbing your forearm. “lie? like you’ve been lying to me for over a month? like you and peter and sirius and james? it’s fine if you like my friends; you can like whoever you want. but you didn’t even have the decency to tell me. you’ve just ignored me—and now you’re lying to me!” remus watched as guilty tears formed on your waterline. “don’t fucking cry, damn it. y- you don’t get to pretend to be all innocent when you’re the one who did this. you did this to us. i don’t even- what even are we, y/n?”
he used your name.
as seemingly insignificant as it was, that was what pushed you over the edge. remus let go of you and continued to the library as if nothing had happened, but he was battling his own tears. his tipping point had been the sound of your sniffles.
