People? In MY computer?? It's more likely than you think!

The following is a fanvertisment and is not connected to the show. ****Yet.*** *Also yes, this is the fourth time I'm posting this because TUMBLR WONT LET ME EDIT SPELLING MISTAKES!

ANYWAY,

Once upon a time, back in 1987, Dire Straits put out this music video for “Money for Nothing”, which, as you know, was a song about wanting my MTV.

The video was made by two guys (Gavin Blair and Ian Pearson) on a very moody computer. After the video went out, these two guys went to a pub:

Ian: “Hey, we should make a whole show like this!”

Gavin: “Dude, making three minutes almost killed us.”

And so it was decided!🎉

The two guys were joined by two other guys (Phil Mitchell and John Grace) and created the Hub, which then became Mainframe Entertainment. They got even more people, and then they all holed up in this hotel.

They were mad lads with a dream: a whole cgi animated show, and they made it happen a whole year before Toy Story!

Behold! ReBoot!

(Yes that fever dream was real)

Now before I get any of this:

Let me lay this down. If you can’t with the animation of the first season because it was CUTTING EDGE IN 1994, you can close your eyes and listen to it. ReBoot wasn’t just a CGI gimmick. The characters are fully developed, the voice actors are peerless, the plot is sharp, and there’s so many easter eggs that you’ll never find them all.

(And yes the episode "Bad Bob" was the actual catalyst for Fury Road. Look it up)

ReBoot is about what life is like in a computer (in the 90s, because it was the 90s) called Mainframe (because of course it is). People are sprites, the guys that look like 1s and 0s are binomes (which represent 1s and 0s). Bad guys are viruses, and the good guy is a Guardian named Bob, who is a certified cinnamon roll.

In the first season the eps are light and self-contained, mainly because there was constant friction between the Mainframe studios and the Board of Standards and Practices.

They still got away with some pretty dark stuff, like Megabyte (virus) making Enzo (the kid) watch his dog get sliced open (dog got away, obviously) , Dot (sprite) have a hallucinatory breakdown, and the fridge horror of realizing the thousands of worm things (nulls) that plunged off a bridge to their death were actually people.

And Hex's (virus

best girl) scary face single-handedly traumatized an entire generation. 🙂

But busting through a window was a no go, because WhAt If tHe cHiLdReN dID iT tOo?

Anyway, halfway through the second season, ABC cut them loose, so they were like, fuck it, we’re going to start going hard. The story shifted from episodic to arcs and things start to get serious.

Third season the show moved to YTV in Canada, which gave no fucks about shielding the innocent children.

So it got DARK

How dark?

The UK refused to show the entire season, so the audience there had to wait until pirated copies made it across the pond to see how it ended.

Also by 1997, the animation was gorgeous. (Best example of third season animation I could think of that didn't have spoilers)

The show was green-lit for a fourth season on Cartoon Network, but halfway through production Warner Bros took over and the same fucking thing happened.

Because Mainframe was halfway done, they decided not to scrap all of it, but knowing they wouldn't be able to finish it correctly, Mainframe stripped anything that would hint at Season Four's true ending, then left what remained on a cliff-hanger of angst.

FOR 22 YEARS

(It's also why the last four eps of season four seem to make no sense)

And so it was.

Other crap happened, the soul left Mainframe, and its animated corpse spat out “The Guardian Code” in 2018.

But never say die! The year is (almost) 2024, 30 years later. ReBoot shall rise from the dead, because here come the documentary!!

hi sorry going down a Reboot youtube rabbit hole and was anyone gonna tell me that the 1995 episode of reboot that parodied Mad Max had the same basic plot and was written by one of the same guys who would go on to make Fury Road.

This is the gif. The guy who wrote this episode went on to be a major driving force (heh) in the making of Fury Road and I am just learning this and god, the talent and passion behind this show. Why hasn’t it been given its due. Imagine what this show could be in a time when we have Miraculous and Beastars and CG tv animation has never been better. Imagine all the stuff they could lovingly parody. Bring it back.

Remembering the cartoon ReBoot from the 90s...

That show was kinda fucked up wasn't it?

For anyone who didn't watch it or is too young the summary:

The show is set in the Mainframe, a city that lives in a computer. The story follows Bob who is the guardian of the system , his friend Dot Matrix and her little brother Enzo.

There are two viruses trying to wreck havoc but kept in check by Bob and the ever present threat of Games

When a game occurs a violet box is dropped on part of the city and everyone within that are is now an NPC which must fight against the user. Because if the user wins the area is destroyed and the residents are turned into "nulls" which are slug like things

Now that's horrifying enough but at one point a portal to the web opens up and Bob is sucked inside

Enzo and his friend (a copy of a game sprite named AndrAla and that's a whole thing on its own) try to defend the city before, to avoid being killed by a game and turned into a null, they start "game hopping" travelling through systems and growing up from kids into adults warriors

It just gets weirder from there and in some ways darker

I really enjoyed this show when it first aired but the animation is very...90s. Especially the first season which came out in 1995

But yeah in retrospect that is a fucking dark story for a kids show

Like the main cast literally always had to battle for their lives to not be turned into mindless slug creatures

I remember them talking about how cruel the user must be and stuff. It was really weird

Compelling and fun though at the time

Left-handed drawings from tonight since my right hand is currently in a brace. I learned a lot from this exercise. Mostly that I have a long way to go before I call myself ambidextrous. The circles were the hardest part and the animaniacs were the hardest characters because it was difficult to do all their round shapes and also to color in their black bodies because my left hand does not have the muscle control that my right hand does. I think Peter turned out the best of the whole set but part of that might be because I had such joy that someone actually wanted to see one of my @threadcaster characters! (Thanks @editoress !) I need to work on the sequel maybe I will do that while my arm is inoperable.

My concepts for a major plot in my ReBoot continuation story. The sketches are over a year old and ATP a lot has changed, so I want to redo the progression timeline among other things. I call him Corruptrix. If you play 'spot the inconsistency' on this, I'm well aware. Design explanations and older drawings below cut

Plot-wise, Matrix begins getting fed up with Bob's radical pacifism putting himself and others in danger. While in battle, his PID is damaged by a creature they don't yet know to be a shard of Hex and it begins to corrupt him. Mentally, he's fine, but as his body begins degrading, it starts pulling from pieces of code from other things what have interacted with his code directly in order to stabilize his body. Megabyte's interaction with his PID is the only one that didn't happen in the show. The corruption is an illness first and foremost, but Matrix understands that it gives him some powerplay and decides to weaponize it in order to make Bob either leave MainFrame or reevaluate and change his stances as a radical pacifist. Essentially, he becomes a revolutionary leader and terrorist for this.

The characters being pulled from here are Bob, Andraia, Daemon, Hex and Megabyte. I'll start from the head and go down.

His hair and beard is grown out just because of time. The ears are longer because of Andraia and his earing has become more of a cord attaching into his body. His eyes have lost their pupil and the sclera are a dark purple to represent MB's eyes. His chin spikes are just cool. The red on his neck is from Hex and is to pad out his very damaged vocal cords. Around the base of his neck and into his collar bones are little pieces of fabric like material, like Hex's elytra pieces, and like her he can manipulate his own. The orange of his shoulder pad becomes a bandoleer, which I'll elaborate on later. The pauldron becomes a large chitinous structure, the height drawing from Hex's and the shape drawing from Andi's sails. The Right arm's band has wrapped around the upper arm similarly to MB's and the elbows move on a hinge like viruses. The forearm has another chitinous structure, pulling from Bob's forearm braces and again Andi's sails. The structure around the wrist pulls from MB and Hex, but the hand is mostly drawn from MB. In the hand are green cords, those are his tendons. There's knuckle pads on it which were adapted for quadrupedal locomotion as his body gets too heavy to carry and his fingers are segmented like a virus. The fingernails are able to extend like MB's and have venom like Andi's. His other arm has become a canon essentially, since it eventually fuses to Gun. The bandoleer from his shoulder attaches into it through the elbow, each blast comes from his body and is just metabolized energy. On the canon arm, his skin is discolored as it's sick and extremely malformed to contour around it and function. The belts strapped around his forearm have a function, but I don't know enough about guns to be able to explain it with words. His thumb nail now serves as a reticle. Both arms are longer for quadrupedal locomotion. Around his chest is a cresting structure like Hex's and grows erratically. His pelvis is just plain deforming, but coming from the right is a cord that functions the hydraulics in his leg. The upper right thigh is a mix of his own and MB's anatomy, with the ridges coming from the side of Bob's uniform, and his knee has a locking mechanism. Foreleg is pulled from a lot of them, the sails from Andi being most notable. Around the ankle is another locking mechanism, which functions as a hasp with the ridges along the shin. This is what the hydraulic is for. The foot is cloven and the heel is from MB. Matrix's whole right leg can lock into place and be very stable, he's essentially a sentry. His left leg is thinner and lighter than the right, having gone through less changes. The holster has changed into a means of keeping his upper leg together, as it's began to split from strain of supporting his body. Knee and foreleg are drawn from Bob and Hex. It's mostly just gone through deformation though, but is cleated and has vents along the shin. Miscellaneously, the veins from Daemon are merely cosmetic, if he were to be able to use her powers, I don't think he'd know how to, let alone know he had it to begin with. Matrix's corruption is an illness where his body is degrading, so he's losing bodily functions, his voice strains when he speaks and comes out as a low rasp, he's got respiratory issues, struggles to metabolize what he eats while all of his body is greatly consuming what energy he does have in order to rebuild itself. All his previous scars are also reopening, which makes him lose his prosthetic eye, though it moreso melds into him. All that remains of it is a yellow glowing cavity. The one non-physical ability he gains is being able to sap power from others, which is the one ability he gets from Gigabyte since both Hex and MB are present in him. He uses this to supplement but will only do it with consent or out of pure necessity. Lastly, he's immune to Andi's venom and vice versa, not that they'd fight. Once he's healed, he's permanently disabled.
