I am not the anon who followed for cobra and now will accept my fate as a tai fan, but please, please, please explain the connection between The Academy Is and Cobra Starship.
Unabridged is preferred tbh.
Tumblr media
i got 2 anons about this and this is literally the thing i'm the most insane about omg ok warning this is gonna be long cause i'm just gonna include everything ive got on my google doc about this
TLDR; same record labels, snakes on a plane, lots of tours together, music videos, webshows and general friendship is the conncection
It starts pre-cobra with midtown. iirc, tai were just fans of midtown pre-tai and in the early days, they're from chicago and came up in the same scene as fob, mike carden (tais guitarists) old band had fob open for them and he was even asked to join fob in an early version of it, so fob, tai and midtown all eventually become friends which is when they met gabe and eventually they toured with midtown twice in 04-05.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2006- midtown dies in 05 and from the ashes rises COBRA STARSHIP. Cobras gets signed to fueled by ramen and decaydance records, which is the same 2 labels as TAI. while gabe's working on the music, tai's bassist, sisky finds out about snakes on a plane and suggested submitting their song to be on the soundtrack. Then william beckett the singer of TAI suggested to gabe that this would be perfect for cobras and he should put a song forward, which he does. Gabe makes some changes to the lyrics, adds william, travie and maja and Bring it (snakes on a plane) was born. (source) Sometime around 2006-2005 gabe briefly featured in the music video for 'the phrase that pays'
2007- things ramp up and they start touring together. Both bands are supporting acts on the honda civic 2007 tour and are featured at 3 separate Decaydance fest shows in Paris, Kohn and London. They also do a series of international festivals together like reading and leeds, pukkelpop, summer sonic, ect AND they do an australia tour just the 2 of them, this was all through summer. At the end of the year cobras jump on TAI's headliner tour, they weren't supposed to butviva la cobra came out earlier than planned so they had no tour to promote it so tai let them open for the last month or so. Both were also apart of the MTVu campus takeover this year. TAI had a webshow and cobra are featured multiple times from 2007-2008, this is actually where they got the idea for cobra cam and even stole TAI's camera man to film it. also somewhere someone released official merch that included cobra, TAI and fob that said 'gabe is not a ynonym for sisky' and they promoted it together.
Tumblr media
2008- Both bands are part of the lineup for warped tour this year, snakes was played a lot and when suarez had to leave the tour for a couple days, sisky and the butcher (TAI's drummer) covered for him. TAI's album was released in august and featured backing vocals from Ryland, Alex and Gabe, and every member of cobra is mentioned in the thank yous. Right after warped both bands go to australia and opened for panic at the disco (bonus info: victoria, sisky and ryan went bar hopping for ryans 22nd), then right after they go and do a japan tour with the hush sound and the cab. For welcome to the new administration, suarez remixed TAI's song 'automatic eyes'
2009 onwards- Things slowed down after this. The butcher is briefly featured in the good girls go bad music video. in 2011 both band play at the 15th anniversary of fueled by ramen, this ended up being TAI's last show before they split. After they split, butcher was the drum tech for cobra from 2011-2012. When TAI had a reunion in 2015, suarez played bass for sisky with carly rae jepsen so he could play on their reunion tour. Also around 2015 Gabe and Mike started TAG music together, i think mike has left since then though.
Extras: at every TAI show since their 2022 reunion they have played snakes on a plane, with gabe or without. Gabe also always does backing vocals for the song 'classifieds' if he's there. Sisky used to do travies rap during snakes if he wasn't there, he did it a bunch on warped 2008.
Sisky commented this during cobrakkah in 2021 and i think about it a lot tbh. I think they were just best friends who got to tour the world together in their youth and are still friends and still hold a lot of love for eachother :,)
Tumblr media
hope that wasn't too much, i'm pretty sure i covered everything that i know about. Decaydance is my favourite thing so i have a google doc of all their connections so i remember them all :D
something to add would be that TAI are opening for fob on the 3rd in LA and a few cobras live there, so i wouldn't be suprised if they show up for snakes on a plane!
EDIT: if you want photos of any of these things I mentioned I probably have some so please ask! and if you don't want to, search my tag #thepolycule and there's a bunch of photos of decaydance bands hanging out together, including TAI and cobra

Top 5 movies and top 5 paramore songs! :^D
oooooh, these are very good, but also, very hard 😂
top 5
top 5 movies*: Pride and Prejudice (dir. Joe Wright, 2005) CINEMATOGRAPHY! The display of love and chemistry! Familial love is fully on display!! Yes, I know it's not a faithful adaptation and it softens a lot of the important themes of the novel annnnd Wright changed the time period because he doesn't like the fashion of the Regency era (which is super lame) and the hair was not great, buuuuuuut he also gave us the hand flex, that ballroom scene, that proposal, also one of my favourite sequences ever in cinema history (i.e, the oneshot take of lizzy being embarrassed by her family at the Netherfield Ball). Snatch (dir. Guy Richie, 2000) This film is hilarious, witty, and just soooo good. It means a lot to me for tmi reasons- but still, I recommend it as it's a stellar example of the heist genre. Everything Everywhere All At Once (dir. Daniel Kwan + Daniel Scheinert, 2022) Doesn't need explaining. Hot Fuzz (dir. Edgar Wright, 2007) One of the best films ever made by one of my favourite directors in one of my favourite trilogies brought together by one of my favourite trio of collaborators. Plus, there are BE similarities, which I find assuming. The Merciless (dir. Bung Sung Hyun, 2017) Thank you for convincing me to watch this film, I love it sooo much! It's fantastic! Everyone should watch it!!! (I recommend you watch Dear Ex. It made me cry, even though the ending is a little cheesy) *I found this almost impossible to answer. These are not a be-all-end-all top 5 for me, but they are the movies that came to mind.
top 5 paramore songs**: i can't decide, so this is a very hesitant list. i'm only linking live performances (if I can) because they're fantastic live (one of the best, imo)
Future The lyrics to this song!!!! 😩😩😩 for the longest time I wanted to get a tattoo of them, especially the last verse. I'm semi-glad I didn't, even though I love them, I don't know how I would feel having them now You First I know I've already sent this to you, but it's a super fun song and I looove it!!! Their latest album is just so perfect No Friend Not the most conventional answer, as most people don't like this song. But I don't care! I think it's one of their most experimental and beautiful songs, especially when paired with Idle Worship (which is basically its part 1). It is the only song not sung by Hayley, as its lyrics are written and performed by Aaron Weiss of mewithoutyou (WHO ARE BRILLIANT LIVE, BY THE WAY). Honestly, I've been lucky enough to see them perform this song and it was memorising. (the performance I linked is not the best out there but it is the performance I saw) Part II Let The Flames Begin and Part II are such cool songs and I love that they exist. The video I linked is of their Reading performance and even though Hayley was super sick (from what I can remember, she had laryngitis and had to cancel some of their tour to prepare for the Reading + Leeds festival), so she doesn't sound her best but she still gives it her all. Careful THE DRUMS. THE VOCALS. Honourable mentions: All We Know, Never Let This Go, Here We Go Again, Conspiracy, Emergency, When It Rains, Fences, Stop This Song (Love Sick Melody), We Are Broken, Hallelujah, When It Rains, Miracle, For A Pessimist, I'm Pretty Optimistic, the new version of Crush Crush Crush, All I Wanted, Feeling Sorry, Turn It Off, My Heart, Anklebiters, Now, Interlude: Moving On, Idle Worship, Pool, Rose-Colored Boy, 26, Caught in the Middle, Forgiveness, Monster, Playing God, Decode, Thick Skull, Figure 8, Crave (especially with the live outro), The News, Running Out Of Time, C'est comme ça, Renegade, IGNORANCE, I CAUGHT MYSELF (especially live), Oh Star, TELL ME IT'S OKAY special shoutout to Daydreaming because I was there when they filmed the music video (the live parts)
** this was especially difficult to do 😂
This took me forever to compile together- oops, i guess lol. Thank you for sending me this ask 💛💛

5 minute read
After decades of calls for greater scrutiny of the family courts, journalists will be able to report proceedings in a pilot scheme from Monday. The BBC's Sanchia Berg reflects on the controversial cases that preceded the move, which is hoped will increase accountability in a crucial area of law.
During the Covid pandemic, Liz Anstey was living with her daughter, teenage son and five-year-old grandson. In early 2021, her daughter gave birth to a new baby who sadly died suddenly, and without apparent cause.
The two other children were taken into care. An inquest showed the baby died of an infection and there had been no sign of neglect or abuse. Liz expected the boys to be returned home, but instead family court proceedings began.
Liz found the court process "very traumatic". She says she did not know who was who, hearings kept being adjourned, and she could not easily follow it.
"I felt like Alice in Wonderland going down the rabbit hole. I really did. It was so surreal," she says.
Family courts handle the most sensitive areas of families' lives - usually involving vulnerable children - which is why cases are heard in private and journalists have not been allowed to report on them.
But there have been publicly-acknowledged miscarriages of justice and many more examples of parents claiming they have been unfairly treated.
It took Liz months to get the boys back - she says having reporters in court would have made a huge difference.
'Significant step'
Over the next 12 months, accredited journalists will be able to report on cases in Leeds, Carlisle and Cardiff, which should enable close scrutiny of the actions of local authorities and the courts themselves. I will be one of them.
The most senior judge in the Family Division, Sir Andrew McFarlane, said there was "an absence of confidence" in the courts due to a "vacuum of information". He told me open justice was a principle to be sought and described the pilot as a "very significant" step.
"For decades… this has been put in the too-difficult box because of the need to open up but at the same time keep closed the identity of the family," he said.
Many thousands of people are involved in family cases each year - there are more than 200,000 cases in the family courts annually and record numbers of children in care.
Broadly, cases are divided into disputes between separating parents, known as private law, and applications by local authorities to take children into care, which are public law. The pilot scheme will begin with public law cases and extend to private law within a couple of months. Journalists will be given access to legal documents and allowed to interview families.
Family court judges may also rule on issues like disputes between doctors and parents over treatment for a child, or so-called "deprivation of liberty" cases where local authorities have nowhere safe to place a vulnerable child in care.
Fruitless changes
Demands for greater scrutiny of the courts have been made for decades, thanks in part to some highly-publicised cases.
One example involved Nicky and Mark Webster, In 2005, their three children were adopted - they had been taken into care after one suffered injuries. The court heard these were deliberate, but the couple challenged that successfully and won the right for the media to attend hearings concerning their fourth child. But the oldest children were never returned to them.
Calls to open up the courts grew louder. In 2008, The Times newspaper ran a year-long campaign which led to the then-Justice Secretary Jack Straw changing the rules so journalists were allowed in.
The big day was supposed to be 27 April 2009. I joined a flood of reporters from the national press heading into the Family Division of the High Court at the Royal Courts of Justice. But it was almost fruitless.
The problem was the rules had not been changed enough and it was not clear what journalists could report. Judges were advised we could report the "gist" of the case, without that being defined.
A couple of weeks later, I went to the lower level family court in Holborn, with the brief from my editor at the Today programme to spend "as long as it takes" to tell the story of a case.
I managed to follow the last two weeks of a final hearing where a local authority was applying to take several children from the same family into care.
The judge allowed me to report some of the details - for instance how a young boy had been hit by his father with a shoe. But I could not include the information that would make it a meaningful story, like identify the local authority, or interview any of the family members.
Towards the end of the hearing, as I came out of the building, I saw the mother collapsed, sobbing against the wall - as if it was only then that she had realised all her children would be taken away. It was a reminder of the real impact of these decisions and the importance of reporting them.
Not true open justice
Jack Straw intended to change the law further so more detailed reporting would be possible. But Labour lost the 2010 election and those plans were shelved. Almost all journalists - including me - stopped trying to report court proceedings directly.
Sir James Munby took over the Family Division in 2013 and announced his intention to open up the courts. As a first step, he told judges to publish more of their own final judgments.
At first, the numbers shot up. More stories from the family courts started appearing across media outlets. Brian Farmer of the Press Association news agency was particularly diligent in picking out the most interesting or newsworthy, showing the range of different issues considered by the court - like a teenage girl dying of cancer who wanted to have her body cryogenically preserved. Louise Tickle, for the Guardian, repeatedly tried to get reporting restrictions varied - and tell stories - usually supported by lawyers from the Transparency Project charity.
But mostly, this was a limited form of transparency, where journalists were reliant on the judge's version of events. It was not true open justice.
Another high-profile case captured the headlines. In 2016, Ben Butler was found guilty of murdering his six-year-old daughter Ellie in 2013. A family court had decided she should be returned to her parents the year before, despite warnings from her grandfather who had been caring for her, that Ellie had been frightened to return to her parents.
'Got to get over it'
Parents continued to contact me saying they had suffered miscarriages of justice. I could do very little because under the rules they were not even allowed to contact me about their case, let alone share documents or discuss what happened.
In 2018, I came across the case of a mother who had nearly lost her daughter forever over her use of an Epipen. She had managed to raise funds to appeal the decision, and won. But when the case returned to the lower court, the judge there made an order that made it impossible for us to report the full story of the case.
Both Louise Tickle and I were in court, and when Louise decided to launch an appeal against that decision, the BBC joined. We won, and could report the case, but it took months and many hours of lawyers' time.
If this pilot is successful, the intention is to extend it across England and Wales. It's not clear how many journalists will try to report cases though, and there are still some practical issues to address.
Reporting is permitted thanks to a Transparency Order. Judges will grant these and be able to vary them, determining what can be reported, depending on the individual cases. Preserving the anonymity of children is paramount but local authorities can be named.
While many judges and lawyers support transparency, some in the pilot areas seemed wary of it.
Hannah Markham, KC, chair of the Family Law Bar Association, said it would take time to get used to reporters. "We're used to not having anybody in court, it's just us, it's just our clients. It's closed," she said. "It's something we've got to get over.

9 Years Of "AM"
In celebration of the 9th anniversary of the release of "AM" by the band Arctic Monkeys, we brought in today's publication a little bit of the history of this incredible band.
9 years that we have the acclaimed "DO I WANNA KNOW".
Tumblr media
The band's history happened as follows, after getting their guitars for Christmas 2001, neighbors Alex Turner and Jamie Cook formed a band with their school friends, Andy Nicholson, who played bass, and Matt Helders, who was left to be the drummer.
Under the name Bang Bang, they played covers of bands like Led Zeppelin and sang with a Sheffield accent. After Alex took over the vocal and songwriting task (he actually already had a few), they changed the band's name to Arctic Monkeys.
After some of the first concerts, in 2003, they started recording demo CDs and distributing them to the public. As the offer was limited, fans copied the songs and made them available on the Internet. Even a profile of the band on the MySpace website was created, all without the members themselves being aware. Thanks to this viral dissemination by the great network, soon not only friends, but hundreds of people sang all the lyrics at the concerts.
In 2004, her popularity caught the attention of BBC Radio One and the British press. Mark Bull, a local amateur photographer filmed a live performance and made the music video for "Fake Tales Of San Francisco", releasing it on his website, along with the compilation Beneath The Boardwalk.
In May 2005, the band released their first EP, Five Minutes with Arctic Monkeys, with only 1500 copies on CD and 2000 on 7" Vinyl, but also available on the iTunes Music Store. In June they signed with Domino Records and soon then they played the Carling Stage, the venue for the Reading and Leeds festivals reserved for lesser-known bands. In October, Domino's first release, I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor, went straight to number one in UK singles sales. United, with 38,962 copies. In the same month, they appeared on their first cover of the New Musical Express magazine.
The second single, When The Sun Goes Down, came out on January 6, 2006 and sold 38,922 copies, again reaching the top of sales. Even with the leak on the Internet and intense file sharing, the debut album Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not, released in 2006, achieved record sales figures. The 120,000 copies in the UK on the first day alone surpassed the sum of all other "top 20" albums in the country on that date, and the first week closed at 363,735 copies.
Without letting the dust settle, in April 2006 they released a five-track EP, Who the Fuck Are Arctic Monkeys?. Despite the high sales, the songs' foul language resulted in low radio plays, which did not bother the band. Shortly after the EP's release, the band introduced a new bassist, Nick O'Malley. Initially, Nick would only replace Andy on the US tour, but it was later announced that he had left the band permanently. In August, they released Leave Before The Lights Come On, the first single not to reach number one. Shortly thereafter, the album Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not won the Mercury Music Prize, leaving behind albums such as The Eraser by Thom Yorke, The Back Room by the Editors and Black Holes and Revelations by Muse.
In April 2007, the Arctic Monkeys released their second album, Favourite Worst Nightmare, which on the 29th of the same month already appeared at number one in the UK charts. From this album came three singles, "Brianstorm", released in April, "Fluorescent Adolescent" in July and "Teddy Picker" in December, ending the album's tour. In 2009, the band released their third album, titled Humbug, with some tracks produced by Josh Homme from Queens Of The Stone Age. Additionally, The Kills singer Alison Mosshart shares vocals with Alex on the track "Fire And The Thud".
Suck It and See, Arctic Monkeys' fourth studio album, came out in June 2011. In February 2012, the band released the song "R U Mine?", which was included on the soundtrack of the video game Forza Horizon. The song was also featured on the group's fifth album, AM,, released in September 2013.
In 2018, the band surprised everyone when they released Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino, an album that caused a stir among their fans. Mixing elements of lounge pop, space pop and jazz, the Arctic Monkeys' sixth album was compared to the work of artists such as David Bowie, Serge Gainsbourg, Leonard Cohen, Nick Cave, among others.

We hope you enjoyed today's post and, if you didn't know the band, you were wasting time, the boys have amazing songs.

In the wake of last night's European parliamentary election results...
June 9th, 2009
In the past fortnight I have on numerous occasions drafted and deleted blog posts about what was the forthcoming European Election. About why it was important for people to vote and to stop the BNP. Every time I came close to posting the message, I stopped myself, reminded of how embarassing it often (always?) is when people in bands concern themselves with politics, and attempt to push their views onto other people.
But today, after a number of my countrymen have deigned to elect two BNP politicians to the European Parliament, and even more didn’t deem it important enough to vote at all, the realisation that there are racists representing me (and you) in Europe has become too much.
I asked my friend Colin Roberts (a man whom musically and intellectually I respect a whole lot, and who is far more capable of writing intelligently than I am)to write something, explaining why now, more than ever, it is vital that you consider how important your role is in ensuring the BNP are not allowed to progress any further.
*****
“It’s a shame that it’s got to this stage, but as a nation we’re now in a situation where the collective apathy could end up destroying a great deal of things that make the Britain such a fabulous place to be creative, live and express yourself.
You’ve probably read that the British National Party took two seats in European Parliament, going to their candidates Nick Griffin and Andrew Brons. There are a few reasons as to why this is a bad thing and why, in eleven months time you simply MUST go and vote and I’d like to tell you them.
1) Andrew Brons, now a member of European Parliament for Yorkshire and Humber was a member of a Neo-Nazi organisation until the age of 17, a prominent member of the National Front and led a march in Leeds in the 80s where he chanted, “white power,” and “death to Jews.”
2) Nick Griffin, the leader of the BNP and now an MEP for the North West region was also a member of the National Front and in 1998 was convicted of incitement to racial hatred, as editor of racist magazine ‘The Rune’, whilst also denying the Holocaust and again being charged with racial hatred in 2005.
3) Both of these are just the public face of an organisation that has, time and time again been exposed to be an inherently racist, homophobic, anti-semitic political party. There is no getting away from it, whatsoever.
Unfortunately, the main reason that the BNP took seats last night was not because people are voting for them in droves, it’s because so many just aren’t voting at all. In Yorkshire, 6,900 FEWER people than in 2005 voted for the BNP, yet because the turnout was so low, they took power.
Saying “I didn’t vote, but I didn’t vote for the BNP either, so it’s fine,” is NOT fine. We need to unite against these people and show that this country will not tolerate this bloody-minded hatred any longer.
Your apathy is as dangerous as anything else. It doesn’t matter if you vote Labour, Green, Liberal Democrat, Conservative, whatever, just make sure you vote in 2010.”
*****
Today is a very sad day, and the first that I can truly remember feeling ashamed to be English. I do not want to feel like this, and I’m sure you do not either. I am nearly as annoyed today with those people who didn’t vote, as I am those who voted BNP. For all the people I see on twitter or numerous message boards, bemoaning the BNP’s ascension, I wonder how many of them cared enough about the threat to go out and vote for a party other than the BNP. If you live in the UK, please make a promise to yourself now that next time you will make your voice heard and ensure that racism and hatred is not allowed to become any more prevalent than it already is. Yesterday’s slim margins of defeat are proof that your single vote IS important and DOES count, and if we all treat it with the seriousness it deserves we can make a difference.
I have learnt from this, that I should have blogged about the EU elections earlier. I’m very uncomfortable with the fact that my being in a pop group, gives me a platform to speak to a wider audience than I’d have otherwise, and that a very few people would pay more attention to what I say than they may have otherwise, but if I had blogged on this, and one single person in Yorkshire or Lancashire or Humber had gone out and voted against the BNP, then that would have been a success. From now on I am going to be more vocal on matters such as this. It may be embarrassing, but I think it’s worse to remain silent.
Thank you for reading.
