Echidna is my third favorite Re:zero character and there's not enough appreciation of her role in the story.

Re:zero fundamentally is a story about love and understanding, both of others and your self. It's about connecting with others, seeing them and in turn seeing your self.

Echidna is the witch of greed and she is a horrible person. Not because of her insatiable thirst for knowledge, but because of her callous disregard for others.

Now I do think that Echidna care for the people around, she cares a lot more than both she (and Subaru) is willing to admit. But her love is very twisted, she doesn't actually see or understand other people for their wants and needs. Nor does she wishes to. To Echidna, other people are more like characters or objects, not equals. She manipulates the people around her and makes them dance to her will.

And this aspect of her character is central to the theme of arc 4. Roswaal has adopted her philosophy of treating people like puppets, he has plan out everyone's routes and he can't accept people deviating from it. He believes there's no other way, because he's already dedicated 400 years to this. If he gives up then everything would have been for naught.

Subaru almost let's himself fall into the same trap. If he had accepted Echidna's contract, the greed if story is the result. Everyone is alive but they're all miserable. Because Echidna doesn't think of others' mental well being as a priority. It's an afterthought for her.

Rejecting Echidna's contract, no matter how tempting it is. Means that Subaru is able to reach out to others. To see and understand others, not as a saviour but as a friend, a brother and a potential lover.
