molly im re reading TVWLM and im curious,, talking about the canon, book kate is way different from show kate??? i mean, as simone ashley was cast as kate i think she bring that arrogant maybe cocky face to the character, also this must have been a decision of the production as well. But this was not book kate, the she is a family person and so gentle, also she belive she is not pretty and definitely she shouldnt be gorgeous so then she can have that personality, what do you think???
Respectfully, I think it’s pretty obvious that both versions of Kate are putting up a front and they’re much gentler behind closed doors. I think Simone’s Kate is a little bolder than Kate Sheffield but let’s not forget that Kate Sheffield also stamped on the foot of a viscount and bit his hand. They’re both kind hearted, nurturers at heart with insecurities that prevent them from showing that face to the world.
Again, Respectfully, I’m tired of the rhetoric that Simone is arrogant, or cocky or anything else. I don’t agree with that view and I’m not going to entertain it on this blog any further.

I never really watched Bridgerton, as it just isn't my kind of thing, so my exposure to Simone Ashley is actually thru Sex Education, where she's awesome, but she'd always taken a bit of a back seat on account of my mild obsession with Emma Mackey (and Maeve Wiley. Like... I love Emma of course, and I rarely obsess over a character the way I do the actress who plays them... but omfg Maeve Wiley is so hot). Anyways, it seems that Simone Ashley has been getting a lot of attention lately, as I've been seeing a lot of her here on tumblr, and that has made me realize how ridiculously gorgeous she is, and is def making me think I need to re-watch some Sex Education with a shift in focus. Musical streams are back! We’ve taken 5 weeks off, but now we’re back! Last time we streamed for 39 weeks in on Kosmi, this time I’m streaming them directly in my europeanmusicals Discord server. This change in streaming platform is because Kosmi didn’t accept a lot of video types and so I couldn’t stream certain musicals, but I will be able to stream those musicals through Discord.

On the event, here's my understanding. They have now closed off registrations, whether it is because it is full or because they realised how bad it looked is hard to know. The thing is the registrations were open for about 12 days. I don't know about season 1 (I didn't know they did one then), and I am not sure about the QC one, but I do know for a fact that the season 2 event was shut off in about a day, and this is because I didn't register initially due to a prior commitment, less than 24 hours later the commitment got changed and I could do it, so tried to register, but it was already closed off.
As for the questions, they were shut off very early on, a friend registered a couple of days later and the questions were already shut off by then. It could be that it was set up to automatically shut off the questions after a certain number, or that they weren't happy with the questions they were getting. I asked about Kanthony and Sophie, I know a lot of others that had questions about Kate and Anthony or Benedict, or Sophie. So maybe they just didn't like getting all of those questions.
Essentially the interest in Polin outside the Polin subfandom is not as high as perhaps some believe. Most Bridgerton, and casual fans I know are not interested in Polin, they don't like Luke N and are not overly impressed with Penelope. One friend screwed her nose up and said nothing when I mentioned season 3 was Polin, she is not huge into Bridgerton, but is a huge theatre fan so loved a lot of the cast, she was impressed by Simone Ashley, loves Luke T and Jonathan Bailey from the theatre, but is just unimpressed with Luke N and Nicola.
They keep linking the article about the event to RSVP so it's not full. I've seen it daily for the past several days.
Yeah, this is the first event I'm attending so I'm not sure how it works re. questions, etc. I'm really only going for looks at Kanthony & Benedict/potentially Sophie and to see Luke Thompson at the Q&A to be honest.
But also, so I can update ya'll on how everything goes with the narcissist. Lol.
Yeah, I've spoken with a lot of 'real life' people aka the general audience and everyone has spoken their distaste for Penelope, Colin & Polin. And pretty much everyone was upset/mad that Benedict was skipped b/c they all love him apparently.

“I wanted the first words you hear out of Kate’s mouth to be in Hindi,” says Van Dusen, who notes that the phrase “baap re” is similar to what English speakers might identify in Kate’s delivery as an exasperated “oh dear.” “We were always looking for ways to honor the Sharmas’ South Asian heritage, to infuse this world with certain details that were specifically linked to the family’s heritage.” This, Van Dusen says, is the most fun aspect to writing Bridgerton. “We want to show and hear things that aren’t traditionally seen or heard in this genre. there is no reason to think this when:
phillip has already been cast in the show and has made an appearance in every season so far.
the writers have not yet replaced a canon love interest for the bridgertons so why would they start now?
cvd did an interview with vogue april 2022 and re-confirmed they are not changing the book romances.
as for why the show-runner and actors are refusing to talk about phillip? the answer is quite simple:
it's a spoiler.
i know that sounds silly given the book has been out for almost 10 years, but it is. bridgerton has the largest viewership of any netflix show and most of those people have not read the books! talking about phillip and eloise in an interview about the SHOW that SHOW VIEWERS will read would be a HUGE spoiler!
they don't "care less" about phillip. they aren't neglecting him. when an interviewer asked cvd if we would see marina and phillip again, he flat out refused to answer the question. he said "i can't speak to that".
when simon ashley was doing promo for bridgerton before s2 dropped she was being incredibly coy, didn't talk about about kanthony, would say things like "whoever anthony ends up with" and dodged questions about kanthony by talking about edwina and sisterhood instead. kanthony stans at the time we're complaining that "simone doesn't seem enthusiastic about kanthony :(" and accusing her of preferring edwina and even inferred the show probably "ruined" kanthony and that's why she wasn't taking about it. 🙄 but once s2 dropped, all her interviews are about how much she loves kanthony and how much they love each other. it really wasn't fair to see fans get mad at simone just because she was trying not to spoil the general audience, just like how it's not fair to see fans now accuse claudia of preferring theo or not supporting philoise or not wanting eloise to get married. in fact, i'd bet money she was told specifically not to mention tspwl in interviews, just like how luke thompson never talks about sophie. claudia literally took a cute little photo with chris fulton and winked, she knows.

Molly, I’ve just been rereading some of the old BSCU stuff (truly a pioneering series <3) and you say a lot that you always imagined Kate as a WOC even before the casting announcement.
I’m just so curious as to why? As a poc, I’ve never known a white person to interpret a character as non-white unless it was explicitly specified (sometimes even then…) - obviously I love that you did, but I would love to know what made it occur to you, if there’s a specific thing?
Honestly, it’s nothing in the writing that made me think that.
I read the books following Bridgerton Season 1 being released so I was already aware of what they were… claiming to be doing Re: Telling diverse stories so when I read the book I imagined Kate as a WOC.
I will say I listened to the Audiobook again a few weeks ago and in my head Kate is so firmly Simone Ashley that I got a little start whenever Kate was described as white. Like “Oh, right!”
But yeah… I don’t think it was necessarily about the character herself more so the context in which I read it I guess.

the fact that ashley precedes Simon's apology with "don't make this weird" feels almost like it was initially framed as a sike-out to the player. which to me is even stronger of an implication of him being aro/ace, or at the very least def not having feelings for Ashley. but perhaps it was removed bc it was too much of a tonal whiplash

I definitely agree. Simon replies "it's not like that", and while it's easy to assume he's lying, I feel like the cut voice lines provide important context to what he means. Without that context, it's kind of ambiguous.
I personally think the dream sequence would have made a lot more sense if they had kept it in; in general it's a bit of a confusing scene. It's a bit hard to understand, and it wasn't until I listened to the cut voice lines that I understood what was going on; Simon is re-living Ashley's death and is trying to apologize to her, but he gets cut off. It's implied that this is a recurring nightmare he has, and he always wakes up before he's able to apologize properly.
Perhaps the reason why it was cut was because the devs wanted the dream sequence to be confusing on purpose. It's certainly weird at first glance; there's a weird mishmash of past and present events that don't entirely make sense, but I suppose that could be chalked up to dream logic.
Dreams don't have to make sense (in fact, they frequently don't), but I think they're hard to pull off as a form of exposition. The point of this scene is probably meant more as a story hook to intrigue the player rather than explain what's actually going on; there's plenty of exposition for that later on. I think this game is very good at laying out things that make more sense later on instead of hitting the player with a mountain of exposition all at once.
Anyway. All that to say, I think you have a point in saying Ashley's dialogue was meant to act as a sike-out to the player. I think it makes much more sense with the context of the cut dialogue, but it might have been cut because the devs wanted players to fill in the blanks. I guess we'll never know.

Random question, but I remember reading an ask of yours a while back about how you would recast good girls and thinking it was so much fun!! So, if there was a modern-day Friends (or a modern-day version of any of your favorite sitcoms/shows), how would you make it different? Would you make any changes to the main ch, who would you cast? Etc etc ♡
Ah! Thank you, anon! I genuinely love doing recasts, so I'm delighted you liked that one, and am thrilled you sent another!
Friends is actually such a tricky one, because it was such a perfect little catalyst in terms of its cast and its characters and their chemistry, and I think we've seen over the years how hard that is to replicate (because lord knows networks have tried). But! I love the challenge, soooo lets start with the cast:
Okay, yes, I loved her in both Bridgerton and Sex Education, but to me Simone Ashley is really an actress who's still growing, much in the same way Courtney Cox was in Friends. In so many ways, I can't imagine a greater role to grow in than Monica, who's equal parts funny and dramatic, protagonist and antagonist, romantic lead and narrative foil. She's a character who's always moving, and I just feel like Simone could play that so well.
Full disclaimer: I haven't seen How I Met Your Father yet, but I've always thought Suraj was an actor who should've had a better career. From Life of Pi to Homeland to Happy Death Day 2U, he's got both the range and the charisma. Ross isn't an easy role to play, and I feel like he could bring out the best sides of him. Plus seeing him play Simone's brother would be a delight, and I feel he'd just be an incredible romantic lead toooo....
I mean, come on, this feels like a no-brainer, right? I can't imagine an TV actress currently working who could better embody Rachel's charm and confidence and throughline vulnerability than Victoria, and I feel like her arc of runaway bride to successful and independent woman would just be one she'd embody so well.
I always feel like Darren sells the comedy in Never Have I Ever better than the dramatic sequences, and his himbo-with-a-heart-of-gold stylings just feels totally perfect for Joey.
In sooo many ways, I feel like Cheyenne in Superstore is an AU version of Phoebe, haha, but they're different enough too that I feel like the role of Phoebe would be something Nichole could really pivot to something fresh, modern and exciting. Plus she's so cute and I love her.
Chandler was genuinely the hardest one for me to cast. There are definitely older actors who fit the bill (Adam Scott being the one who immediately leapt to mind), but no one who fit that mid-to-late-twenties range that would be needed for a re-cast.
After a lot of thought, I landed on Shameik, which the more I think about, the more I love. Chandler's not really an easy role to play - he's got this not-quite-warmth-not-quite-coldness to him that's defined by an acerbic sense of humour and a genuine loyalty to those around him, a boyishness that's somehow contradicted by being the only one with a 'real adult' job at the start of the series, to moving from quippy sidekick to true romantic lead. It's not an easy role to balance, but Shameik's done all that and more across his career. To see him do it in the one role - and to do it opposite Simone and Suraj in particular - feels dreamy as all hell.

As for changes, yeah! There are a few. The biggest change I'd make to the show would be scrapping the plotline with Rachel's pregnancy. I don't think the show needed it, and the fact that it resulted in her staying in New York at the end of the show's run was, I think, a real betrayal of her character.
And this might be a controversial opinion too, but I think it was a bit of a betrayal of Ross' too. I forever wish the show had gone deeper in exploring Ross co-parenting Ben with Carol, and the fact that Ben was really overshadowed in later seasons for Emma really bummed me out.
In that sense, I think if I was to reframe the series, I'd definitely be making Carol and her new partner, Susan, and Ben much more prominent characters, and have Ross and Carol co-parenting being a bigger part of Ross' overall arc. (Also, okay, hear me out - Kiersey Clemons and Tati Gabrielle as Carol and Susan respectively)
The show wasn't Great with sexuality in general, but it kind of had these built-in avenues to explore it in much more exciting and authentic ways than it did, and Carol definitely offered that, but so did Chandler's father, who I'd love to write in in a bigger way, and I think it genuinely makes sense that both Joey, Phoebe and Rachel at least be bi.
Otherwise, I'm not sure! What do you think?
