the fact that emily gwen lives in poverty while i can walk into target and buy unauthorized reproductions of their work is fucking disgusting frankly. corporations deserve to be hanged en masse but until we can do that for the love of g-d PLEASE keep queer money in the queer community. buy directly from queer artisans like emily, make your own pride merch if you have to, but we need to stop giving our money to rainbow capitalists who are literally, openly stealing from us already. i love target's pride section but i would rather spend $75 on a handmade flag someone actually sat and sewed out of real strips of coloured fabric so they could pay rent than $5 on a strip of screen-printed polyester that nobody got compensated for making at all.

i’d rather have rainbow capitalism then living in constant fear of discovery. the woman in the pride flag disney t-shirt might be missing the nuance, but at least i know i can be myself. a street full of rainbow flags makes me more comfortable holding a mans hand. look. corporations aren’t your friend. they will sell to whoever will buy. but kids seeing gay everything every year is only ever a good thing, and a massive improvement in history

Two things can be simultaneously true.
"Rainbow Capitalism" does not in any way signal whether corporations actually care about or help queer & trans people and only serves to generate positive PR and/or free advertising from "outraged bigots." And Corporations openly displaying symbols of pride and queer/trans community serves as modest barometer on the social acceptance of queer & trans people, and business after business pulling back it's pride merch/symbolism because of right-wing backlash is not good and potentially a sign of even worse to come.

I admit I hate rainbow capitalism, and understand that most of the companies that do it donate to anti-gay and anti-trans lobbyists.
But every company makes a cost- benefits analysis for every move they make. They calculate how much money it would take to to the thing, how much money they'd lose from potential customers if they did he thing, and how much money they'd gain if they did the thing.
And the blessed thing about rainbow capitalism is a bunch of billion dollar companies said "This is how much money it'd cost to create the designs. This is how much potential money we'd lose from homophobes that no longer want to support our business. And this is how much money we'd get from gay people buying our products just because it's gay." And the giant corps realized they'd make more money from the gay communities and allies than they'd lose from the homophobes trying to boycott.
And look. It goes both ways. Like gay people can't stop eating Chic fil a, the homophobes can't stop shopping in Target. Both potential losses and potential gains will even out at the end of the month to go what it would have been if they hadn't done the rainbow capitalism.
But the point still stands. For an entire month, companies realized that the money of the gay communities holds more power than the money of the evangelical communities. And I just find that beautiful.

the fact that there’s literally no companies putting up their rainbows right now for pride month because they see it as too risky is genuinely scary

Queer liberation not rainbow capitalism.
Digital illustration of a person wearing a matching rainbow outfit with a red cape that reads, ‘queer liberation not rainbow capitalism.’ There are protestors behind them with signs that read, ‘fight poverty, not the poor,’ ‘we deserve access to gender affirming care,’ ‘stop funding anti-LGBTQ politicians’ and ‘housing for all.’

I'm making a collection of evil corporations or organizations with pride logos that show the stupidity of rainbow capitalism. please add your favorites
Tumblr media
[image id: the logo for nerv, a fictional organization from neon genesis evangelion, colored in the pride flag colors. the nerv logo is half a leaf partially covering bold letters spelling N E R V and the words "god's in his heaven, all's right with the world" in an arc at the bottom. end id]
for those who haven't watched evangelion, nerv is a government organization that forces traumatized children to fight angels in giant robots and suffer extreme physical and mental pain, while all the adults that are part of the organization are absolutely the worst human being alive.
