I don’t think people realize that erasure within certain groups in queer communities directly affects peoples perceptions of the violence and abuse those people can face and why. Hypervisibility and invisibility are both two sides of the same coin. Neither is better or worse than the other, because while hypervisibility can glorify the violence a group faces and grossly sexualizes it, invisibility aims to turn the camera away from another group so that they don’t get any ideas that people like them exist in the first place — let alone face harm for their presentation and identity.
Erasure isn’t just “feeling invisible” — it’s also the general media and population purposefully trying to undermine issues certain groups can face and ignore them so those groups feel like they have no outlets or support — whether it’s from society or their own communities. It’s often because they want to avoid the idea of the very existence of those groups as well.
I don’t really think people know what erasure truly is. And I think when people try to act like “it’s not that bad” they don’t even realize how that does more harm than good and feeds right into it.

Queer erasure and the BoL
Omg I just realised that the whole language around the Book of Life is actually super evocative of the whole discourse around Queer History and queer erasure from history? Like the whole "behave, stand in line, conform to our standards of normal and don't make trouble or we will write you out of history to make it so that you will never have existed" is pretty close to how queer communities, identities and histories get invalidated on a daily basis. "These are 'new' identities, they didn't exist in the good old days, which is why I won't respect and acknowledge them" etc. ... It's like being erased from the BoL not because we actually never existed but because normative society wills it so. It isn't an observation, it's a threat. A rewriting of history to make it fit your narrow narrative. Wow.

sorry to break it to you guys but annoying people are allowed to be queer. you do not get to revoke somebody's access to the LGBT community just because you don't like their taste in music/clothes, the way they talk, or because you think they're a walking stereotype. hope this helps <3

I posted something similar on Twitter but, I’m not a subscorp shipper, I dislike Scorpion (and Kuai Liang tbh, I’m a Bi-Han girl) immensely but this seems like a giant fucking slap in the face to the entire queer fanbase. It’s fucked up, especially doing this to us during Pride Month. You can’t just take Scorpion and Sub-Zero, arguably the most iconic video game rivalry and super popular ship and suddenly make them brothers. Fuck you Ed. I’d like to speak to Papa Tobias please.

“Queer is a slur.”
This is something TERFs like to point out to members of the queer community. Telling queer people that a slur they’re reclaiming is a slur is an interesting choice. By interesting, I mean a complete waste of time because we already fucking know how bigots like to use it, and that’s why it’s being reclaimed. No one says you have to call yourself queer, but you don’t get to tell a queer person that they can’t. Boundaries are a thing and you’ve overstepped yours.

Maybe cisgenderism and heterosexuality seem so "natural" and "normal" to you, because you have methodically removed any mention of queerness from the history books ...

Here's a take that makes anime fans furious
Goku is aroace and performing compulsory heterosexualality.
My proof,
1. Goku marries Chi-Chi because he made a promise to her as a child, one he didn't understand, and because he is a good Boi he keeps his promises.
2. Goku has never kissed Chi-Chi, and is confused as to why Vegeta would want to be there while Bulma is going into labor.
3. Goku, while he does have kids, never displays any signs of sexual attraction to anyone.
4. Toriyama literally stated that Goku views Chi-Chi and Gohan the same way he views Krillin, ie platonically.
5. Most Saiyans do not have a concept of Romantic attraction or family units. Vegeta does because he's royalty, and Bardock is an outlier.
This isn't even headcanon, or a queer reading. It's just in the text/word of god, and this information makes the worst anime fans froth at the mouth, and I love it.

ah then, i must’ve accidentally recalled some misinformation from that infamous lesbophobe on twitter who constantly “headcanons” vi as bi to spite people 😭😭😭 although i do have to say, there’s an unfortunate history of official art/promos using lesbian flags and not knowing about the sapphic flag or what the difference is 🙄 i still believe they’re actual lesbians and take their word for it so don’t worry but these days it’s (generally speaking) hard to tell what’s truly meant to be conveyed; hell i’ve even seen sapphics on twitter do the same thing and it’s really frustrating 💔
you indirectly make a good point though, despite talking about something else! there’s a similarity in how confirmed bisexual characters may or may not actually be pan/poly/omni instead despite being said to be bi. or maybe they’re just bi and what was said was meant. i don’t have any specific examples but the idea probably exists, or will. erasure is common in all forms of queer, unfortunately.
btw also — believe me, i HAVE seen a radfem blog call bow a GNC female before 🫣 it… happens. so. yeah. it’s bad.
+ thanks for the sources!!
The ONLY thing I could get from that is that it rhymes. And as a bi woman who loves Vi, I’m a visexual lolololol
Yeahhhh ppl who “headcannon” Vi and Caitlyn and Catra and Adora as bi or pan stink. I don’t see it as often as ppl “headcannoning” Ivy and Harley and Korra and Asami (and somehow even Bowlover Boykisser Glimmer- I have no idea how ppl see her as a lesbian) as lesbians but like. Headcannoning any characters other than cisallohet characters as any other identity is so invalidating and callous istg.
FR. Ppl LOVE to throw the lesbian flag up in group sapphic edits that include Luz and Bubbline and Harlivy and Korrasami. It sucks. And like, the sapphic flag is so pretty! Why not use it <\3
Haha that’s not the point I was going for but thank you anyways chase! Within the context of a piece of media or said by a writer, if a character is bisexual, they’re bisexual. Not pan, not omni, not poly. Bc if they’re using specific terminology, they did that for a reason. Even if bi is an umbrella term, it’s also a specific identity as it’s own (you already know that tho lmao, I’m just restating it.)
Now, if a character shows interest in more than one gender, they’re most likely bisexual, but there’s a chance they could be pan, omni, poly, etc. like Charlie Morningstar from Hazbin Hotel. I’m like sure she’s bi, and the writers have never said anything otherwise or said that she’s pan or whatnot. So it’s clear to say that Charlie is canonically bisexual. Now, if within the show, or if the writer were to state she’s pan or omni or poly, then her already canon bisexual just got a lot more specific, and we’d say she’s canon this or that instead.
That’s SILLY (derogatory), I literally don’t see how someone can see Bow get glitter eyes looking at Sea Hawk and go “yeah that’s a lesbian.” 💀
Here, have a meme while you’re here :)

okay so. here’s the situation. netflix has just released the trailer for a show called “the bastard son & the devil himself” which is based on one of my favourite book trilogies- half bad by sally green. it looks great and all buuttt, i have some qualms (shocker, ik). the main one being, i am 75% positive that they are gonna pull some queer erasure bs. those books are incredibly queer and from the look of the trailer, i fear that that will not be how netflix decide to play this. i am going to have to re-read the books as it’s been a while and i need to remind myself of what happens when but i am still concerned as it looked very nathan and annalise centric. either way, i will leave this post at that or we’ll be here forever lol. so yeah, just some initial thoughts from a fan of the books :)
update: more trailers have been released which lead me to believe that it may thankfully not be what I was worried about lol, however I will still probs update this as I am way too nit picky about book->show/film adaptations for my own good lmao
update 2: AHGHH THIS SHOW IS BANGING EVERYONE SHOULD WATCH IT :D the representation is *chef’s kiss* and it’s so fucking cool. it’s very different from the books but still very enjoyable, seperate to the books tho
update 3: fuck netflix. I knew they’d pull something like this, they’ve cancelled it after one season just like they have done to every other amazing show on the platform, baffles me how they’re still held as one of the best streaming platforms
