thinking about Brave again (specifically how the movie begins and ends with Merida and Elinor playing together, as well as how when Merida has a flashback about the time she still has a good relationship with her mother, she goes all the way back to when she’s still a wee kid who gets to play with her wooden horse while being watched over by Elinor) and realizing that... holy shit, maybe Merida’s love language has been the act of play this entire time?
Act of play, like... something close to quality time, where there is an element of togetherness, but also not quite like it because it strictly revolves around the act of playing and all kinds of activities she views as fun OR letting her loved ones have their fun.
I think we can see this in practice through her interactions with her father and her brothers. With Fergus, she is allowed to do all sorts of things she finds exciting like archery, sword-fighting (which we can see in the Cutting Class short), falconry, and general goofing around. In all of these instances, she is shown to enjoy herself and her father’s company—which in turn bleeds into a sense of favoritism from Merida’s side; it’s clear throughout the movie that she gets along better with Fergus than with Elinor. In the triplets’ case, it’s the other way around: she’s the one who keeps them entertained by telling stories (which can be seen during the dinner scene) and lets them have their fun by not getting in the way of their pranks (despite it being hinted that they sometimes listen to her, making Merida the one with the ability to stop them if she only say the word—which in turn implies that she probably find some of those pranks funny as well). When Merida is particularly close with a family member, she is shown to either 1) do activities she perceives as fun with them, or 2) let them have fun in their own way.
Compare this to how Elinor treats Merida: how she ignores Merida’s tales of her latest excursion (the dinner scene), how she does not join Merida and Fergus during their outings (i.e: the falconry scene), and how she restricts Merida’s general freedom to relax and just have fun by always hounding on her about Princess etiquettes and manners. If we take into account this headcanon that Merida views the act of play as a love language, then Elinor is basically depriving Merida of the only way to connect with her mother emotionally.
(This is not to say that Elinor is an entirely bad parent. It’s clear that she does invest her time, care, and efforts into her daughter; an act that is motivated by both maternal love and political duties as a queen who has to educate her offspring into rulers. Not to mention the movie never shows her to be stingy with affectionate endearments toward Merida either. It just happens that Merida initially didn’t understand all of that as an act of love from her mother, and instead translates it as only Elinor being a controlling parent. This mother and daughter pair is just not speaking the same language.)
This is also probably why the river scene—where Merida and her mother caught fish together and played around for the first time in (probably) years—is what prompted Merida to make this expression:
Tumblr media
It’s only after they genuinely had fun together that Merida has a fleeting thought to herself: that maybe this strained relationship she has with her mom is still salvageable after all. And what happened before this, again? What helped her come to this conclusion? Merida and her loved one, playing together!

I love the 2016-2017 Disney Princesses comics because they are very cute, quite funny and pretty, add a few cute good lore elements, and have characters bond
Notably it has Merida and her ex suitors having become friends after the movie's events which is adorable. None wanted marriage and she didn't want to put aside her tomboyish personalities they were allowed to have, so they all bonded over those as the clans made peace. That's adorable
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I also love the balance of consistency (Wee Dingwall is not stupid. He just has a resting high face especially when he is not happy to be there or doing that. And these strips understood that) and evolution (none used to understand Young MacGuffin now they do and just "translate" for us readers, they all used to be shocked and embarrassed Merida was superior to them now they gladly accept it and try to better themselves and show off to her not an unfriendly way, Wee Dingwall speaks more and even though Young MacIntosh is still proud and boasts a lot and still tries to impress the archery expert as if he would teach her anything, it no longer, he no longer seems to fit as many tantrums as before, mock or look down on others, seeing teens his age and a girl who not only is not a trophy for once in his life but a genuine friend as well as someone who had him and the others open their eyes about this arranged marriage thing, he became slightly more humble and seems to still be working on it and heading towards the right way. As for Merida herself, who used to roast and mock them with her dad, now she is more at peace now that they no longer pose a threat to her future and so became helpful, supporting and even when she makes fun it is more light hearted than anything and she aknowledges when they do good (such as no matter how shitty his desmonstration had been Young MacIntosh DID do a bullseye) and is no longer annoyed but amused or concerned about their antic
But my favorite strip is this one for everything is implies and the lore details and potential it gives, especially for how much the movie is about parent-child relationships
Tumblr media
The fact they all agreed to camp together and their parents agreed implying the clans are closer than ever and them, future clan leaders, will be closer than ever for having hunted together, fought together and camped around a fire in the middle of nowhere together in their youth
The confirmation Merida isn't/wasn't (it seems to take place after the movie but I guess even if the bond was mended and Elinor now accepts her daughter's tastes and opinions she still must expect her to keep practicing stuff essential for a Lady's future, or a compromise Merida accepts to do now they understand each other even if she doesn't like it) the only one to have to follow strict royal lessons but they all did which puts even more into perspective their roles in the movie and why they approved her choice
The implication that either the Lords are like Elinor at home being more up to the rules, serious and strict than Fergus and just being feral once together as men OR it has to do with gender and the mothers have to be like that to their daughters and so do the fathers to their sons
And the most boring tasks the dads give them have to do with their (dads' and/or sons') traits : Lord MacIntosh is very proud of his lineage and genes (he prides themselves in having the most beautiful hair) so he demands for his proud son to be proud for something useful for once such as about his own family heritage, Lord MacGuffin tries (enhance tries, that's not really how you help but he tries) to have his son more confident and more eloquent as a future leader who will have to be heard and understood by his people in his court or in battle, and then you have Lord Dingwall who just has his son do chores for him, which works with how bossy he is and how it must be his definition of making someone responsible, as well as how the Dingwalls seem to be more practical than show since whereas they are mocked for jist having a rock as sigil, it is a much better weapon than a caldron or a lyre and goes straight to the point without needless symbolism therefore chores must be more important for him in life for a leader than anything else
I am obviously overanalyzing some points, but these go perfectly with my HCs

The story Brave isn't just about a young Scottish princess standing up to fate, turning her mum into a bear and fighting a demon bear.  Its about how a mother and daughter come together, while forming a much stranger bound.  So if you are having troubles with your mum, just remember Merida's story and you'll be together again.

Beast within (Elinor x Reader)
Tumblr media
Para la ricitos de chupirul
--------------------
She knew she shouldn't be here. As queen, she had duties to attend to, decisions to make, and a kingdom to protect. As a mother, she had children to care for, manners to teach, and loving scolding to give. But as someone who was cursed into a bear, there were other pressing matters.
She really wasn't sure when it had started, she only knew that one day it had awakened in her an insatiable need to go to the forest, to be alone with nature, to come into contact with the bear that now lived inside her, and who begged for an air of freedom from time to time.
So, there she was, alone in the middle of the forest, with her hair loose, her dress up to her knees, her feet in the cold water of the river, and breaking all the rules that her past self had decreed. She felt good, she felt free.
The bear was also calm. The ghost of anger she had felt that morning that had triggered her swift departure from her castle had long since vanished. Now there was just a strange calm in her as if the bear was waiting for something, something it wanted, that it needed, and that it knew they would have.
_______________________
You gasped for air as you forced yourself to keep going, despite the enormous pain in your head and feet, you couldn't stop. You had to get to the river before the beast in you could fully take control.
You hated it. You hated with all your being this "gift" that seemed more like a curse. You didn't care what kind of favor the forest spirits had done for your parents, they had no right to take your life like that.
Turning into a beast whenever your emotions were too strong (even if you weren't angry, it also happened when you got too emotional) was meant to be a gift to your family, a way to protect yourself and yours, but instead t, you had only hurt everyone around you.
The images went through your head every time you closed your eyes. Your bloody mother, with half of her arm torn off because of you, your furious father, and your terrified brother. You fled from there as soon as you regained control of your body and you never heard from your family again.
You had no way of knowing if they had tried to find you, if they had forgiven you or if they were relieved that you were gone, but it didn't matter, either way, you knew you would never see them again. It was what you deserved.
At least you had been granted a little respite. The water calmed you down, so you had an escape from the beast as long as you made it to the river in time.
________________
The bear felt it long before she did. Her stomach clenched nervously and her chest tightened a little. The breaking branches sounded a few feet ahead of her, across the river, and for a moment she felt she was in danger. But then...then she saw you.
You stumbled clumsily through the trees, not even looking around you. Just a few steps from the shore, you fell flat on your face, bringing the queen to her feet immediately, gasping with concern. However, you didn't even seem to notice her, you just kept crawling into the water, looking desperate.
Elinor felt the bear growling inside her, it took her a moment to realize that it wasn't growling at you, but at herself. It was almost as if it was berating her for not going to your immediate aid.
You sighed in relief the moment your hand touched the water, you could feel the pain of the transformation starting to fade, but it wasn't enough. Every move hurt you more and more, but you couldn't stop until you were completely submerged.
The queen hurried to your side, while the bear grew increasingly impatient. She didn't know what you were trying to do, but you were going to drown if you kept dragging yourself into the water like that.
"Wait" she said, holding you by the armpits.
You moaned in pain as you felt a strange contact in your body. The beast always left you sore before and after transforming, anything that brushed against your skin, including the light fabric of your dress, hurt you.
"My dear, wait, let me help you" the queen tried to reason with you
You just shook your head and kept struggling with the woman who was trying to get you away from the river. You didn't know who she was, your brain was too foggy to recognize anything, but you didn't want to hurt anyone and if she didn't let go, her blood would be next on your hands.
"W-water" you gasped, still trying to get out of her grip "B-beast...w-water...h-hurts"
Your babbling didn't make sense to the older woman, so she kept trying to get you away from the water. However, the bear must have felt the change in you and a horrible feeling washed over her by the time you managed to push her away from you.
Elinor could only watch as you dropped into the water and her blood froze when she saw your eyes: they were black, lifeless. At that moment, she could feel for the first time since she became a bear that both she and the animal were in agreement on something. They were both completely terrified. And yet...completely mesmerized by you.
