Life has been treating me well lately even though I’m having a little trouble keeping up with work. Nonetheless, I feel really blessed :)

Very sorry for the lack of posts, you guys- I want to post things, but I am very busy in real life, and for the past few weeks, writing Tumblr posts takes time that I just do not have. I still check Tumblr pretty regularly, so I don't want you to think I'm dead.

my hot take is the whole "search for life in the universe" thing is truly just a spin to put sparkle in children's eyes and make dumb congresspeople who like the idea of aliens fund science that actually helps people
the endeavors bring about a ton of great science that is related to health and ecology and atmospheric monitoring and all sorts of stuff and understanding how our planet and life was former and the scientists who do this research and stare at radiograms and try to figure out if that chemical stretch is a C-S or a C-C or a C-O bond, are amazing scientists
but god do I have no interest in "uwu we might have found signs of life on other planets!"
the first time was vaguely neat, now we know it's entirely possible and not novel and probably there's phytoplankton (at best) in some ocean planets that we will never ever visit woo hoo
most of the astro people I know working on these projects are mostly interested in the spectroscopy part too and not the whole search for alien life thing so it's very hard for me to look at the press releases with anything but weariness
no one's interested when we figure out what metals are in the active sites of proteins or that actually a redox inactive metal mutated into this other protein actually increases its activity bc the mechanism involves redox active ligands and cofactors, rather than the metal itself. just. you know. as an example. but every time there's a little blip of "oh there's NOx and SOx and VOCs on another distant planet according to this one spectra--" gets a front page news thing.

I went on a vacation for a bit and now I'm working on my moot. I had some troubles managing it with my vacation but now that I'm home I'm able to work on it with a clearer head. Let's hope this one's as good as my last one💗

What's the average age for finishing college and finishing university where you're from then? :O
Tumblr media
If you go to uni directly after high school (for the record, I didn't) and follow the most "traditional" system (aka you don't extend, interrupt, become a parent etc.) at most unis it takes three years to get a bachelor's degree and two more years on top of that to get master's. So in the best case scenario you can get a bachelor's degree at 23 and master's at 25.
If you want to continue to PhD, that depends on the university I believe - for example, my friend does PhD in biology and it's 4 more years on top of master's - she'll be finishing the course next year when she's almost 30.
We truly spend our entire twenties at uni over here :'D
I've heard of skipping high school and that's also completely bonkers! :O I mean, there are exceptions here but you usually have to be some kind of child genius/prodigy if they let you skip just like... a grade :'D But at the same time, we don't have middle school, we have primary school where you go for 9 years (grades 1 - 9, ages 6 - 15) and then you go to high (also called secondary) school (grades 1 - 4, ages 15 - 19).
The only comparison I can draw from is when we had an exchange student from the US for a year. She was freshly 16 and was put in our class of 18 year olds because we both were in "the third year of high school", except in different systems. I believe she also skipped a grade at home, so she was way younger than the rest of us and we were very protective of her because of that :'D
But when it comes to getting a degree, it must be said that if you go to a state funded university, all your first degrees are free. So if you don't change your course (we don't have majors, we apply directly for an exact faculty from the beginning - e.g. you apply for biology, you do entrance exams from biology related subjects, study biology and cannot switch to IT halfway through. If you want to switch your "major" you have to terminate your current course, re-apply for IT and go through the entire entrance exam process again), then you can get all your degrees for free. If you switch, however, then you pay for the new course after a while but compared to the US pricing, it's nothing. People are definitely not getting loans to study. Which is also another thing absolutely incomprehensible to us, getting education shouldn't put one into a life-long debt. It's insane.
But yeah. Hope this makes at least a bit of sense!

I find it fumny that people say that Elon Muskrat has the mentality of a 6 year old.
Which is offensive to 6 year olds. They're often very smart and if you explain to them what's happening they reason it and accept it.
You know what mentality he has? Of a far right aligned male, and I know this because I've met tons of them through the years and they all act the same. Hell! I live with one!
And it's always the same story. They refuse to lose, they know everything and more than everyone else, they won't listen to your arguments because they're already convinced that you're wrong, they will even deny actual data!!!
And that's what makes them so dangerous, they have absolutely no capacity for introspection.
#hong talks#Reminds me of that time during quarantine#when many studies were coming out and they were talking about them on TV#and they started talking about how many children go to school just because they get to eat#and what is the hope for those children with online classes#and he started rambling about how that's a lie and is stupid#I'M A TEACHER. I'M A STUDENT. I know this. I've seen this everyday I've spent at school.#so I told him that + the fact that he's fighting literal factual information#he screamed a me. he told me that all those polls that say our country is poor are wrong. that is impossible.#that if it'strue that 1/4 Paraguayans are hungry it means that the neighbor in front of us is hungry#WHICH IS A LIE!!!!#and like not only is that a very stupid misunderstanding of data but also is deflecting the matter at hand#he screamed and hit the table and when he realized I'm not afraid of him he got up and went to his bedroom#another time there was this classmate's dad who kept interrupting my WW2 presentation#He kept saying out loud that Hitler is still alive in Argentina because he came to Paraguay#and like everyone in the public was annoyed at him#I was 13#So i corrected him and he went ballistic with his conspiracy theories and kept repeating the same over and over again#so I said Sir there is absolutely no proof for that because we know Hitler did this and this and he just got up screamed something and left#afterwards the teacher's told me I shouldn't talk back to adults.#They're simply so entitled that they believe they're entitled to the truth as well
