Purple Noir Week day 5
This Fanfic is part of @purplenoir-week (see their tumblr for details
Chat Noir enters through Adrien's bedroom window and mumbles, "Plagg, claws in," even before touching the floor. Immediately, the kwami zips the length of the room and passes through the locker door where his stash of Camembert is hidden.
“Plagg…did you see? Even Juleka teases me about this purring thing! Is it possible that there's nothing that can be done about it?" asks Adrien, sitting on the bed as he unties his shoes.
Plagg, from inside the locker, replies, “Why, Adrien? What's wrong with purring? I just don't understand you humans!"
"Well first off, you never do it..." begins Adrien, but Plagg interrupts him and flies to his face snapping,
"Yes, but that's because I have a reputation to hold!"
"So you see? It's a problem for you too!" retorts the boy.
"But it is not the same thing! I'm Plagg, the great Kwami of Destruction!" declaims the little fur-ball solemnly.
Adrien stares at him for a few moments, then bursts out laughing; Plagg looks back with a pout and then flies away, feigning offense.
"Plagg, I don't know what I would do without you," concludes Adrien. "Let's go to sleep now."
The next morning, Adrien is in a bad mood; he turns off the alarm with a grunt and turns around, ending up facing Plagg's green eyes. "Happy birthday, Kitty!"
"Thanks, Plagg! At least you remembered," he replies, yawning and reaching out to stroke tenderly the head of the little kwami. Adrien gets up and goes to the bathroom, picking up his cell phone to check his messages. "Not even Nino wished me a happy birthday...great stuff," he mumbles, turning on the shower.
After a breakfast as lonely as any other, Adrien goes out into the driveway to wait for the Gorilla, who arrives almost immediately, without even giving him time to appreciate the beautiful weather of the day.
The blond gets in the car and finds an envelope in the back seat. "What's this?" he thinks and opens it, intrigued. The driver lowers the glass, turns around and looks at him with the most similar expression to a smile Adrien has ever seen on his face, while Adrien opens his envelope—his eyes grow wide when he sees its content. Not because it's anything rich or super special per se, but it's special to him. It's a simple greeting card, with 'happy birthday' stamped at the front in a funky writing style. Inside, the message written in a very neat handwriting is basic and simple. And yet, it moves Adrien to tears. “Happy Birthday Adrien. B."
"Oh my God, Baptiste!" Adrien exclaims, tears rolling down his cheeks. "Thank you! Thanks for remembering, at least you!" he continues, putting the card into his school bag, along with his books.
His bodyguard looks at him again with a smile, without saying anything; then he starts the engine and slowly exits the gate of the villa.
When he gets near his school, Adrien knocks on the glass partition, ready to come up with a credible excuse, and asks, "Could you drop me off around the corner, next to Tom and Sabine's pȃtisserie?"
Baptiste looks at him for a moment, then pulls over at the side of the road and opens the door lock. "Thank you!" exclaims Adrien, getting out of the car.
As the car drives away, Adrien hears Marinette's familiar voice coming from the shop door. “Bye, Maman, Papa! See you at lunchtime!" The boy doesn't have the time to turn around or move before getting hit right in the chest by a hurricane called Marinette. He staggers and takes a step back, but manages to keep his balance.
Marinette closes her eyes and, trying in every way not to tumble to the ground, she leans on what is in front of her—Adrien's abs. She manages to balance herself and takes a deep breath, smelling an aroma that almost makes her head spin. “Hmmm… This is 'Adrien, the fragrance' ... Wow, I can't believe how realistic these billboards are getting. Do they make them even scented now? They almost seem like the real thing…" However, immediately after another smell comes to her nostrils, mixed with the first. "And this other smell is...Camembert?" The girl suddenly turns pale, "Chat Noir!" she thinks.
Adrien looks down and sees a head of raven hair and two pigtails that he knows well; at the same time, Marinette, still leaning against him, opens her eyes and freezes. She stops breathing, her eyes threatening to pop out of their sockets, when she realizes that it wasn't a billboard she was hanging on to; she had run over someone. Then she suddenly realized who she had run over! Adrien himself!
"OhmyGodAdriensosorryIdidn'tthinkyouwererealImeanIknowyou'rerealbutIdidn'tthinkyouweregoingtostandinfrontoftheboulangerie..." she blurts out, all in one breath.
"Marinette," he interrupts her as soon as he catches his breath, putting a finger on her lips to stop her rambling. "Are you alright? Did you get hurt?"
She falls silent and her face changes from a deadly white pallor to the color of Ladybug's mask, almost instantly. "AA-Adrien…I…uh…w-well," she stammers and then whispers, "Never been better." Marinette's gaze flickers left and right, then she finally realizes that she is still leaning against Adrien and her face renews in her warmth.
"I'm glad you're fine, but you're tickling me," teases the boy, trying very hard not to laugh. Suddenly, Marinette puts her hands behind her back, takes a step back and turns even redder, while Adrien covers his mouth with his hands to muffle a laugh.
"Sorry, I'm always so clumsy," Marinette mumbles, hiding her face behind her hands.
"Nah, don't worry, it happens," replies Adrien. But when he looks at his friend, he notices that she has dropped a book on the ground. "Hey, you dropped this," he says and bends down to pick it up, but as he does that, his head collides with that of Marinette, who has also reached out to pick the book up.
"Ow," they both exclaim. Then, always together, they mutter, "Sorry!" Adrien puts a hand behind his neck and Marinette thinks, "Please, kill me now! Let me dig my hole and end up in China!"
The two raise their heads slowly and their gazes meet, leaving both of them motionless for a moment staring at each other. However, soon the sound of the school bell fills the air and Marinette jumps to her feet, noticing that the traffic light is about to turn red. She proceeds to grab Adrien's hand and drag him along, running at breakneck speed towards the school.
"Come on," she breathes out, "I'm an expert at skating on thin ice". As she runs, she thinks, “Why am I thinking about Chat Noir right now? I'm with Adrien and we're late!" She doesn't even realize that she's holding hands with Adrien as they make it just in time through the school gate before the doors are locked.
Adrien tries not to fall, unbalanced by the pull, and then regains his balance, genuinely amazed at how fast Marinette can run, despite being so tiny. He's struggling to keep up with her as they enter the inner courtyard of the school.
In her hurry, Marinette almost ends up running over Nino and Alya, who are talking to Juleka and Rose in the courtyard, as they head towards their classroom. The girl with pigtails comes to a sudden halt, bending down to catch her breath; then she raises her head, meeting four pairs of astonished eyes, which immediately look down. Marinette follows their gaze and realizes that she's been holding Adrien's hand all this time. The blond is standing next to her, red-faced, disheveled and with a half unbuttoned shirt, his free arm and face resting on her shoulder as he tries to catch his breath.
The girl drops Adrien's hand so quickly you'd think it had burned her and smiles nervously at her friends, her face reaching shades of red never known before to mankind. "Uh…I…we…I can…" she keeps stuttering, but is interrupted by the bell.
Alya nudges her in the ribs as she grabs her to enter the classroom, imitated by Nino doing the same to Adrien. The DJ whispers something to his friend that Marinette can't hear because at the same time, Alya is talking to her too. “You…can…explain?" she teases. "I'm glad you can explain, girl, because there are lots of things that look odd to me!” Then holding her by the arm, she enters the classroom.
Throughout the first hour of class, Alya keeps glancing at Marinette next to her and at Adrien in the front row, trying to say something, but is blocked each time by Miss Bustier's stern look. Marinette for her part, having been late going to sleep the previous night to take Juleka back to the Liberty, has a very hard time trying to keep her eyes open.
Nino, on the other hand, is dying to talk to his best friend who, as soon as he's recovered some composure, has taken his tablet and books from his school bag and is now following the lesson blankly.
At one point, Alya sees him looking at the time and sighing, and thinks, “Hmm…is he bored? Well, I can't blame him, I too can't wait for this History lesson to end."
Finally the lesson ends and while they wait for the following one to begin, Nino starts pestering Adrien with a whole load of questions. "So tell me, bro, what happened this morning?"
"What do you mean, Nino?" asks Adrien, looking at him confused.
The other counts on his fingers, starting from his thumb: "First, you are late, while you're always here at the crack of dawn." He continued, raising his index finger, "Second, your top was out of your pants and your shirt was all creased, which is unlike you." He raises his middle finger. "Third, you were red-faced and out of breath." Finally, Nino raised his ring finger. "And fourth and most important, you were holding Marinette's hand!"
“Sssshhhhhh! Lower your voice! It's not what you're thinking!" hisses Adrien, looking worriedly at his friend. "It's just... this morning I wanted to take a walk and I asked my bodyguard to let me get out of the car in front of Tom and Sabine's patisserie. And well…she came out in a rush and collided with me and…well, to clarify things, we ended up being late, so we ran here!"
Nino gives him a sidelong look. "Wait, 'clarify' what?" he asks mischievously.
Adrien's hand flies behind his neck. "Well…after I checked her out to see if she had gotten hurt..." The blond stops talking when he notices how his friend was arching an eyebrow and feels his cheeks flush. “Uh, no, Nino. Er, said like this it sounds so bad! I didn't mean 'check her out' that way, I m-meant…I just asked her if she was okay?"
But Nino doesn't seem to be wanting to take any shit. He leans closer and nudges him in the ribs. "Why, I would never…come on, lovebird, I'm your best friend, you can be honest with me!"
"Nino, what the heck? It was an accident!" snaps Adrien, his voice slightly louder than intended.
Everyone turns towards him, including Juleka from the back row, who stops talking to Rose.
"Uh! S-sorry, We were talking about...video games!" lies Adrien, his face as red as a tomato as he elbows Nino in the ribs to get him to cover for him.
Their classmates take the bait and start chatting to each other again, but Juleka from behind her bangs shoots Adrien an eloquent look.
Adrien is not the only one to undergo a third degree: taking advantage of the break, Alya drags Marinette into the girls' washroom.
“Nothing happened, Alya! I…” is saying Marinette.
“So why were you so tired during the lesson? You and Sunshine must have been up to something, you know, after having posed together for that photoshoot the other day... " snaps Alya mischievously.
Marinette snorts. "Please let me explain, Alya!" she groans and then continues a little calmer, “you know how…I'm so clumsy and have two left feet. This morning was no exception and when I ran out of the pâtisserie, I collided with Adrien. And I was tired after last night…"
Alya shoots her friend a sly smile.
"Agh, Alya, stop! Last night I got everything ready for the party, remember?" explains Marinette with a pout. “And then, I didn't realize it was him, I thought he was a billboard. And then, we were late! That's all!"
"Ugh," snorts Alya as her palm presses against her forehead. "I was hoping for something more...you know...spicy!"
Marinette snorts in turn. "As usual...Now let's go back to class, the bell will ring anytime soon!"
At the break the students come out of class and Juleka joins Adrien on his way to the cafeteria. "Hey," she greets him.
"Hi Juleka," he replies, "Did you sleep well last night?"
Juleka blushes slightly, thinking, “I would've slept better, if I hadn't ended up in my nightgown on the Eiffel Tower!” But instead replies, “Yes, thanks Adrien. Ah, and happy birthday!"
"Thanks Juleka!" Adrien beams at her, and then takes her hand in his. “You're the first…no, the second person to remember about it today. The first was the Goril...uh, Baptiste, my bodyguard…I really didn't expect it!" His eyes sparkle as he thinks back at the card he still has in his school bag, but then his gaze saddens. “I can't say the same about my friends here at school. Not even Nino, or Marinette, remembered about it. It's so weird!"
Juleka scratched her chin and thought about it carefully. "I wouldn't worry about it, Adrien. I'm sure they'll wish you a happy birthday later. They can't have forgotten! Please, cheer up."
The two sit at the same table and Adrien places his school bag on the ground near their feet "Did you want to talk to me, Juleka?" he eventually asked.
"Listen," she begins when they are seated, trying to find the best words. "Don't you think you exaggerated a bit last night?"
“Me? No! Uh, sorry if I embarrassed you, but I...well, that's the way I behave when I wear the mask! " whispers Adrien in reply.
"I understand, but I'd like to point out that what I had suggested to you was to let your hair down when you're Adrien. I didn't want you to start flirting with me!" explains Juleka.
"So-sorry..." he says, his hand reaching for the nape of his neck. "As I said, I really didn't mean to embarrass you."
She waves her hand in a dismissive gesture; then, she leans her elbows on the table and looks Adrien in the eyes. "But that's not the only thing I wanted to talk to you about. Maybe you didn't see how Ladybug looked at us last night...I think she's jealous."
"Jealous? I don't think so, she's never shown any signs of jealousy towards Chat Noir," replies Adrien.
"I think it's just sour grapes...trust me. Girl's instinct," Juleka explains.
While the two talk, Plagg comes through the material of Adrien's bag and gets to Juleka's feet. “Bangs, you embarrassed my Kitty last night…And me too! Now, I'll give you tit for tat, or rather Camembert for Gorgonzola!" he thinks, as he delicately undoes Juleka's sneakers' strings and ties them together.
"So, Adrien, I think you'll be good, but please don't overdo it!" concludes Juleka, looking at the clock on the wall. Adrien nods and stands up. "Let's go, before we get late again!" he says, taking his bag from the ground.
Juleka gets up and takes a step, but trips over the strings, hits the stool making a noise and with a soft "aah" begins to fall forward. Adrien hears the noise and turns around just in time to catch his friend in mid air, ending up circling her at the waist.
"Hey, watch out!" he says, helping her to sit down. “What's wrong with me today? You're the second girl that falls on me. What is it, you can't resist meow im-purr-essive charm?" He pauses, then winks at Juleka with a smile. "I thought tigers fell on their feet too."
They both burst out laughing, but Juleka looks at her shoes and frowns. “They do, when their paws aren't tied together,” she says, pointing to her sneakers. Adrien follows her gaze and sees the strings tied, then he exchanges glances with Juleka and they both whisper, "Plagg!"
Marinette and Alya are passing by the cafeteria on their way back to class and they both see Juleka sitting with someone, but the silhouette of the girl prevents them from making out who she is talking to.
Marinette turns to her friend. "Look, Juleka is here. Did you tell her about the surprise party?" After careful consideration, Alya says, "Hmmm, I told Luka and Rose yesterday, but I asked them not to tell anyone..." "So maybe it's better if I tell Juleka directly, before I go back to class,” says Marinette, turning to the cafeteria as she hears the noise of chairs being moved.
Juleka is no longer sitting at the table, but standing, hugging a boy. A blond boy. With a white shirt, jeans and orange 'Gabriel' sneakers.
Adrien.
Marinette widens her eyes looking at the boy helping Juleka sit up again, say something and then burst out laughing with her. A mixture of disappointment, jealousy and amazement hits her like a punch in the stomach. "Look at those two! And I thought Juleka and I were friends…and that she and Rose…What's going on?” Marinette turns away, lower lip trembling, hands clenched into fists.
Ignoring everyone, she walks with a heavy step towards her class. "I've changed my mind!" she growls.
Alya follows her. "Marinette, what's going on?" she inquires, and then turns to look at her other two friends in the cafeteria. She immediately notices that Juleka is bending down to undo her shoes: did someone play a trick on her and tie the strings of her shoes together? She turns and shouts, “Marinette! Wait for me!" But the girl with pigtails is now gone. "Uh, oh…" snorts Alya. "I need to explain this misunderstanding before Papillombre takes advantage of the situation and akumatizes her!" she thinks, running toward her classroom.
But Marinette didn't go back to class. She ran to her locker instead, where she had hidden her gift for Adrien.
The girl is standing in front of the closed door, her hands shaking. “Damn! I was hoping that Adrien would...and instead... I'm so stupid," she says to herself,.
From her bag, Tikki whispers, "Calm down, Marinette, there must be an explanation!"
"What explanation? It was too obvious!" she replies. "I don't care anymore. I'm giving him my present now!" She tries to open the lock with trembling hands, and as she's entering the last digit, she hears footsteps behind her and someone calling her name.
She turns and sees Juleka. Marinette lets go of the lock and looks at the other girl. “Tsk, you're the last person I wanted to see. I thought you weren't interested in boys, and instead…” She turns completely and walks toward the door, passing by Juleka who is frozen on the spot, her eyes wide open. "...I caught you hugging none other than Adrien!" she concludes, without even looking at the other girl. “I wanted to tell you that we're throwing a surprise party for him. Ask Luka where it is if you want to come”. That said, she leaves, and runs back to class.
Juleka remains motionless for a few moments, a lump in her throat as she thinks, “What a mess! I have to tell her that it was just a misunderstanding…” Then, she too turns around and returns to her class.
At the door of the classroom, Alya blocks her best friend and literally drags her into the corridor, in front of the washrooms. “Mari! Stop it immediately!" she snaps, hands on her hips. "It's all a misunderstanding, why do you always have to jump to conclusions?"
"Leave me alone, Alya, please," says Marinette in a low voice.
“Nope, I won't! I'm your best friend and you have to listen to me!" says Alya, raising her voice and looking around. “I saw what happened after you left, and I spoke to Adrien. He said that Juleka fell on him because someone tied her shoelaces to play a trick on her!"
Marinette is furious. “What a rubbish excuse! They were alone, who could have played a trick on them? Uuuuh, I really didn't expect such behavior coming from Adrien! I don't even want to talk to him anymore!" She rummages in her bag and takes out a bunch of keys, which she hands out to Alya. "Can you take care of the party tonight? We can't put it off."
The brunette looks at the keys, then at Marinette's red and angry face. “Come on, Mari, please be reasonable! You know that Juleka doesn't like boys that way!"
"What if she changed her mind?" exclaims Marinette. "Otherwise, why such a lame excuse?"
“Maybe because it's the truth? You can't be sure there was nobody in the café, we didn't even go inside! Adrien wouldn't lie about that! You should talk to Adrien and Juleka before making up your mind about it!" hisses Alya, spreading her arms and looking her friend in the eye.
Marinette hesitates, but then she cringes and says, "I don't feel like it now. Maybe later, when I have calmed down." That said, she enters the bathroom and slams the door.
After talking to Alya, Adrien walks into the boys' washroom.
"Plagg, you got me in a lot of trouble!"
"Why?" asks the kwami. "Hadn't Bangs embarrassed you because of the purr?"
"Yes, she did, but you've overdone it!" says Adrien. "Alya asked me what happened, I think she suspects something. Maybe she saw you!"
"And why should she have suspicions?" asks Plagg, interrupting him.
"Because otherwise she wouldn't have asked!" snaps Adrien. "I did explain to her what happened, but I couldn't tell her that my kwami had played a trick on Juleka!" The boy shoots Plagg a serious look. "It's the second time, or maybe the third, that you risk getting me into trouble at school, Plagg. Let's go back and please, stay in the bag!" says the boy, coming out of the washroom.
They go back into class; Adrien notices Marinette's frown and immediately asks her, "Are you okay, Marinette?" She just nods and looks the other way, and Adrien would like to inquire further but doesn't have the time, as the teacher clears her throat, checks that everyone is seated and begins her lesson.
Adrien, worried by Marinette's strange reaction, tries to peek over his shoulder at her face, which keeps frowning throughout the lesson. In fact, when the girl notices him looking at her, her gaze hardens even more. "What's wrong with everyone, today? Marinette seems angry at me, Juleka keeps staring at us...Did I offend Marinette somehow this morning? Um, I don't think so, she didn't look angry before we arrived at school. I'll call her later and inquire—Uh, no I can't, I have fencing practice. Just my luck…as if it wasn't bad enough that nobody had remembered about my birthday," he thinks, his head buried in his shoulders.
The bell to signal the break for lunch finally rings, and Adrien hurries out. Outside the car is already waiting for him; he gets in and the Gorilla drives away towards the manor.

Fandom: Miraculous Ladybug
Rating: T
Wordcount: 1140
Relationship: Platonic Juleka & Adrien
Notes: Happy @purplenoir-week!! Day 1: Patrol. This one features Season 4 spoilers, specifically with regards to Kuro Neko. A little bit unorthodox, but hey, all identities are included.
Content warning: Juleka and Adrien (as heroes) prevent a sexual assault. The assault is indirectly referenced, but that is what happened.
Read on AO3
“Who are you?” Juleka asks. He doesn’t smile — he doesn’t act like the friend he wants to be. Of course she knows something’s wrong — she’s always been perceptive. “What happened to Chat Noir?”
She’s defensive — but who wouldn’t be? She doesn’t know the truth. She doesn’t know the intricacies of everything that’s been going on.
“Don’t worry about it, Purple Tigress,” he answers. He doesn’t say anything else. But perhaps he shouldn’t tell someone with anxiety to quit worrying. “If all goes well, this is not a permanent arrangement.”
Her eyes linger over him, taking in the costume, the look, the facade he’s put on.
He wonders if she sees underneath it.
“Where is he?” she asks, quieter this time. “I’m sure you’re aware.”
He shrugs. “My kwami won’t speak of his identity.” That much is, at the very least, based on truth. Plagg doesn’t need to speak of Chat Noir’s identity, because he is perfectly aware of who Chat Noir was. “I am quite aware of the hero Chat Noir was. I may only hope to emulate him.”
But the point of the charade is that he doesn’t emulate Chat. That he isn’t Chat, that he’s different.
“What should I call you?” Juleka asks. Good. Progress. She is acknowledging the difference.
“Catwalker,” he responds. It is a lie, but hero names have never been true.
He has always been a liar.
Juleka’s eyes narrow, but she says nothing.
“We should get started,” he says. Consummate professional — that’s who Catwalker is.
“Right. Patrol.”
Juleka is…technically the senior member. It feels weird to think of it like this, but he is the one that’s supposed to be new to this.
He takes out his baton, pressing the pawprint in the center of it to extend it in length. He pretends to be surprised when it does exactly as advertised, and forces the tremble in his hands as he prepares to swing.
Juleka has already taken off, using the bolas of the Tiger Miraculous to swing across the rooftops.
He follows carefully, trying not to appear overly at ease with the baton — while still not being clumsy. Characteristic of a newbie, but indicative of someone trying.
Besides, vaulting was always intuitive to him.
This time of day there are many people out and about. The point of their patrols are to try and prevent akumatizations — this can involve things like stopping muggings sometimes, but sometimes it’s just…making sure Chloe doesn’t get akumatized again, making sure the pigeons aren’t disturbed. The anti-akuma charms help, but they aren’t perfect.
He’s perfectly aware of what’s going on.
“Hey!” Juleka yells as he watches her descend into an alley. “Back off!”
Oh no.
He launches into the alleyway behind her. Juleka is standing between an attacker — an older man, he would estimate the man is somewhere in his thirties — and a young woman, who looks twenty at most. She twirls her bolas in one hand, while holding her claws out with the other.
“Go,” he says. He flexes his hand as though he’s about to Cataclysm the attacker. “Leave this place.”
The attacker looks between the two of them. “I’m not going to listen to a couple of teenagers—”
Juleka punches the attacker in the face.
He allows himself just the slightest self-satisfied smirk. The next step is to comfort the victim, make sure everything is okay, ask if she wants to press charges…
“Thank you,” the woman says. She’s shaking, her clothing is torn…
“What would you like us to do?” he asks. She would probably be more comfortable with Juleka, but he will stay until asked to leave. The reasons the victim might be uncomfortable are twofold — his gender, and the fact that he is not Chat Noir.
“Can you take me to my place?” she asks with a trembling voice. Juleka’s expression is soft. He can afford no such thing — kindness is, of course, important, but composure is his priority.
“Of course,” Juleka says. “Would you like to be on my back, or…?”
“Sure,” she says. “Let me…”
“Take as much time as you would like,” he says. Old habits die hard.
When she is ready, she climbs onto Juleka’s back, whispering directions to her. He follows closely, making sure no one follows the two of them besides him.
His baton starts to ring before they reach the woman’s place of residence. He stops to pick up the phone.
“Catwalker,” Ladybug says on the other end, “I couldn’t reach Purple Tigress, so…”
He was the next best thing.
Of course. He was the next best thing after Chat, too.
“What’s wrong, Ladybug?” he asks.
As he said at the beginning — he was there to take care of her.
“Viperion and I are at the rendezvous,” she says. “I was just…concerned about the two of you running behind.”
“There’s no cause for concern,” he responds. “Purple Tigress and I are comforting the victim of an attempted assault. She’s helping the victim return to her apartment. I am attempting to make sure the two are not followed.”
“Of course.” Ladybug’s voice is softer now — it was just the right thing to say to her. None of them have any tolerance for assault or abuse. “Either you or her should call when you’re heading to the rendezvous. Ladybug out.” There’s a beep before the call ends, and he continues.
“Please don’t feel as if you are without support,” he hears Purple Tigress say. It’s the typical victim procedure. “If you wish to pursue legal action, you have support. We have contacts, of course.”
Right. Of course. Rose’s mother is a lawyer. Ladybug’s plan is always to ask her.
“I…no, not for just an attempt. He didn’t even really touch anything,” the victim responds. “I plan on calling one of my friends over. We’ll watch some bad romcoms and not worry about it.”
Purple Tigress nods. That’s another part of the training — don’t try to force victims to do anything, they will not be responsive to it. “I hope you feel better, then.”
The window closes, and Purple Tigress turns. “How long have you been listening?” she asks, crossing her arms.
“Not long. One of us should call Ladybug — we missed the rendezvous.” He taps his foot. Juleka frowns and calls Ladybug.
“Yes, we’re on our way,” she says. “We’ll see you soon. Bye, Ladybug.” By the end of the conversation, she has a slight smile on her face. It fades when she looks at him.
(It hurts. But he can’t tell her the truth — he hasn’t told anyone the truth. She is one of his closest friends. The trust involved in that is not enough.)
“Let’s go, Catwalker,” she says. The shape of his name is foreign in her mouth. But it is not his name.
He follows her to the rendezvous.

Chapter 4: A Purr-fect patrol (Day 4 - purr)
Chapter Text
"Come on, Alya, I know that you took my place as Scarabella this morning," snaps Marinette, sitting next to her friend on the chaise longue in her room. The floor of the room is covered with multicolored paper chains, which the girls have just finished. On the sewing table is a neatly folded long banner; near the hatch is a box of paper hats and other party decorations.
"But there's something else that worries me about the fight!" continues the bluenette, her serious gaze full of concern. "Someone else was wearing the Black Cat Miraculous. I mean someone other than Chat Noir! And I can't believe you've got no idea who that person was!" She gives Alya another serious look. "I'll have to give Chat Noir a good lecture, you don't just entrust a Miraculous as important as the Black Cat to other people without letting me know first!".
"No, Mari! Mari, Mari, don't get carried away..." begins Alya, holding her by the shoulders. "Chat Noir did nothing wrong! On the contrary, entrusting the ring to someone else was a great idea! Alone I wouldn't have been able to break that chisel. And besides, YOU also entrusted ME with the earrings and..."
Marinette interrupts her, sulking. "Yes, but I trust you, and I had already given them to you once!"
"But you don't know what's happened to Chat Noir AND you don't know whether that girl is his best friend in civilian life, or his sister or whatever, someone that he trusts exactly like you trust me. You're too stiff, give that boy a little confidence!" Alya looks up, trying to remember details of the fight that happened that morning. “However, you're right in one thing. I have absolutely no idea who that girl could be. Because it sure was a girl. Slender, more or less as tall as me. And…she was also very pretty! She was also a really good fighter; it was as if she'd already used a Miraculous before. " The girl stops to think. "But maybe that depends on Plagg...don't know how much of the Black Cat's personality depends on him, even this girl was saying silly puns.."
“Alya, I'm not bothered about what she looked like or whether she punned or not. My concern is why did Chat Noir entrust her with the ring? In almost two years it's never happened. It can't have been the first time that he was, let's say, unable to transform, but now it's the first time he has entrusted the ring to someone," insists Marinette.
"Well, the same can be said about you, in two years it's only happened to you twice. So…" She flashes her a smile. "I think the best thing you can do is ask him."
Marinette looks at her with a confused expression. "You say I'm exaggerating a little?"
"Maybe a little, yeah...Changing subject…do tell. How was it posing with Adrien for the statue?" She rubbed her hands and looked at Marinette expectantly.
“Horrible! That is, not Adrien, he's gorgeous…but Rocheux! Don't misunderstand me, but when he looked at me I felt as if I was...naked...Or maybe it was because of Adrien?" She raises her gaze, blushing. “Anyway when the sculptor asked me to take off my shirt, I almost panicked! I was too embarrassed! Then I told myself that I ended up all over the Internet in my pajamas, what could've been worse than that? So I took it off."
Alya looks at her a little disappointed and Marinette continues, “What is that face? And anyway, you were there too, I can't tell you anything more than what you already saw!"
“Actually you would have a lot to tell me, as Adrien kept whispering things in your ear. And then I saw how he looked at you, or rather how he looked at your tummy…button,” exclaims Alya, jokingly jumping towards Marinette and tickling her. The two girls roll on the floor laughing, then Marinette squeals, breathlessly, “Stop it! Enough! We could ruin the decorations for Adrien's birthday party!"
After catching her breath, Marinette asks her friend, "Did you remember to ask your father for the keys to that warehouse near the zoo?"
"Sure" says the other, waving a bunch of keys at her. "But we've to bring all this stuff there by tomorrow!"
“That's no problem,” explains Marinette. “I can use the yo-yo when I get back from patrol tonight. To make it quicker, I'll ask someone for a favor again. Remember to give the invites to everyone. And tell them not to tell anything to Adrien, please!"
Alya nods and Marinette continues, “Did Nino find the limited edition of the Knightowl action figure? We need it to delay the Gorilla and allow Adrien to come to the party."
"He hasn't answered me yet, I'll see him later," replies the brunette.
Marinette gets up from the floor and begins to put away all the decorations in the box. "Well, then let's carry on with 'Operation Surprise Party'!"
After dinner, Marinette says goodnight to her parents and goes back to her room. At around 11 pm, knowing for sure that her parents are sleeping, she approaches the box, getting ready to transform.
Tikki flies beside her and asks, a bit dubious,“Are you sure you want to bring this stuff with you on patrol? Last time it didn't go very well, with the letter to Adrien."
"Tikki, I already told you. There are no risks, there is only one box, I cannot confuse it "he explains, smiling" You worry too much. But thank you ... now let's go, I even have something else to do! Tikki, spots on!"
Once transformed, Marinette opens the yo-yo and brings it closer to the box, which disappears inside of it. Shortly after, Ladybug knocks again on the porthole of the cabin where Juleka sleeps. The girl looks out from the small opening, and Ladybug notices that she's wearing an oversized purple t-shirt with a neckline that leaves one shoulder uncovered.
The polka-dotted heroine puts her hand over her mouth. “Oh my sorry, Juleka! Were you already sleeping? " she asks.
“Don't worry” replies Juleka, “I was already in bed, but I was still awake, reading.” That said, she takes two steps back and gestures to Ladybug to come in. The red polka dotted superheroine is clinging to the edge of the porthole with her feet resting on the hull. As she slips into the porthole, Juleka turns to close the window. "Do you need another favor, by any chance?"
Ladybug notices that Juleka uses the oversized shirt as a nightgown, and has bare legs and feet underneath it. "As a matter of fact, yes, I do Juleka," explains Ladybug. “You told me that you would have liked to go out on patrol again and there you go, this is your chance! Besides, I also wanted…well…to take advantage of your presence to take a different route than the usual one. I thought we could split up at some point and then meet again at the end. Usually, at this time of the day not much happens on the usual route, and there was all that chaos this morning!"
"Oh, I'm aware of what happened this morning," mutters Juleka, sitting cross-legged on the bed and hiding a smile.
"What did you say?" asks Ladybug.
"Oh, no, nothing!" replies Juleka, “I said that…. Ok, I'm in. And don't worry, I always stay up late and my brother will be back very late, we have at least two hours before anyone will think of checking on me."
Handing the Miraculous bracelet to the other girl, Ladybug says,“Great then! Here we go! Ah, remember that the transformation replaces your clothes with your outfit, but when it ends, you wear again what you wore before you transformed. " "Ah, ok...Is there something wrong with my clothes?" asks Juleka in a low voice, lowering her gaze.
"Nothing! Just try not to have to recharge Roaar's power on top of the Eiffel Tower in your nightgown! " giggles Ladybug. "I'm always terrified it could happen to me!"
The other looks at her legs. “Hm, good advice! But I don't think it will happen to me." She shrugs and whispers, “Roaar! Stripes on!"
Chat Noir arrives at the meeting point at the same time as the other two and looks amazed at the Purple Tigress. "Hey Tiger, I didn't think I'd see you so soon!" Then he takes her hand and kisses her knuckles softly, while looking at Ladybug. "M'lady, you could have warned me that she was going to be with us!"
Ladybug raises an eyebrow at him. "Why, Chat Noir?"
"Well," he says, "I would've groomed myself a little more, maybe!" He flashes her a toothy smile. "Shall we go, girls?"
"But don't be silly, Chaton, you're always perfectly groomed, aren't you!" comments Ladybug, holding back a laugh.
Chat Noir pretends to be offended. "You wound me, M'lady. Yes, this cat is purr-fect, but there's always room for improvement!" He takes his baton from behind his back and leaps away, announcing, "See you at Notre Dame!"
Ladybug looks at Purple Tigress, shrugging. “Better if we go. Once at Notre Dame, we'll take three different directions and meet back at the zoo."
In a couple of jumps the two girls reach Chat Noir, who has slowed down to wait for them. Then Ladybug manages to go past them, helped by the greater mobility of her yo-yo. The two feline heroes end up standing side by side. "So..." begins Chat Noir, jumping on a chimney "...Was Plagg his usual annoying self, this morning?"
"No, not at all!" says Purple Tigress. "Except when he called me Bangs..."
"From what I've heard, you were great, for being your first time with my Miraculous! And your costume was really cool! " he continues, keeping an eye on Ladybug and on his surroundings at the same time.
"T-thank you..." mutters the girl, remaining a little behind. Chat Noir realizes that the other is no longer following him closely and waits for her on the terrace of a hotel. When Purple Tigress reaches him, he signals her to wait. “Can I ask you something?" When the girl nodded, he nervously touched the nape of his neck and his gaze ran upwards. "How did I do? I tried to put Marinette at ease, but she was always so nervous."
“W-well, isn't that obvious? You two were half-naked…of course she was nervous!" she replies, spreading her arms up. “Yeah, but when I did the photoshoot at the pool she wasn't as awkward as that,” he thinks to himself.
"What?" asks an astonished Purple Tigress. “Yes, it was for a perfume ad. Those damn pigeons! To save money, the advertising company had decided to use pigeons rather than doves, and I'm allergic to pigeons, so it was a real disaster. Marinette was there, no idea why, by the way, but she was in her swimming suit, and she didn't look embarrassed about it. And I was only wearing my swimming trunks," he explains, blushing slightly when a flash comes to his mind, "The umbrella closing on my head...her genuine laughter…"
Purple Tigress looks at him, then shakes her head “Ok, then. Forget it, maybe it was just my impression."
"Yes, but as I went, I saw you were looking at us..." insists Chat Noir, impatient to reach Ladybug who, by now, has surely reached Notre Dame.
"You did very well; it was a good start," says the girl, then she lowers her voice and adds, "even Rose said the same." She gave him a sidelong look.
"Rose?" asks Chat Noir.
"Gah, I should shut my mouth! Now he'll find out that everyone knows about Mari's crush!" panics Juleka. "W-well she was also looking at you, remember?" she says, trying to mislead him.
Chat Noir is thoughtful for a moment. "Well yes...So I wasn't too…weird?"
She shakes her head, a little embarrassed. "Not at all..."
He looks up. "We better go. Come on, Ladybug must be there already!" Chat Noir uses hir baton to jump, then Purple Tigress takes a run and jumps across the street, making a pendulum with her tail tied to an antenna.
The three debrief at Notre Dame and head in different directions, agreeing to meet again at the zoo half an hour later.
While following the agreed path and looking around for possible problems, Purple Tigress thinks about the exchange she just had with Chat Noir. "I would never have thought that having a Miraculous would've helped me...well, I finally got out of my shyness a little...Who knows if even the others feel like this. Adrien, at least, is completely different when he transforms. Even though…I don't know, there's something I can't put a finger on. It's as if he's playing a character when he's Chat Noir and another one when he's Adrien, but he's neither really. It must be the mask: when you wear a mask you're not yourself anyway."
The ears of the Purple Tigress costume turn towards a noise and she is roused from her thoughts: in the street underneath her, someone is shouting. The girl stops to understand where the noise comes from and sees flashing orange lights in an intersection a few meters below her. With a leap, she reaches the roof of one of the buildings and looks out onto the street. Two cars are stopped in the center of the intersection, facing each other. One of the two appears to not have seen the red light at the junction and have hit the back of the other. The damage does not appear serious and the two drivers do not appear injured. One of them is shouting to the other, “You're an idiot! Didn't you see the traffic lights?"
"Why should I give a damn about the traffic light?" replies the other. "At this hour of the night there's never anyone around anyway!” They are both furious and start insulting each other. Suddenly one of them leans into the boot of his car and comes out holding a wrench, which he waves menacingly against the other.
Purple Tigress sighs, and activating the Miraculous's power, she jumps off the roof, landing on the ground near the two men fighting. She glares at both as she lands on all fours, and pushes her fist into the asphalt, roaring, "CLOUT!" The violence of the punch she gives on the asphalt causes the two drivers to tumble to the ground and the cars involved in the accidents to almost jump up. A couple of parked cars sway in the blast and alarms begin to ring.
The two arguing men end up with their backs to the ground and get up on their elbows, terrified, backing away from the center of the intersection, without understanding what was going on. Purple Tigress stands up, brushes her hair away from her face and glares at them. "Talk to each other instead of arguing!" she growls. "Your cars aren't even damaged. Why are you getting so angry at each other?"
The two look at her, giving her a terrified nod, then they exchange a glance, jumping to their feet. "Yes, of course.." says one, at the same time as the other one says, "You're right". “Now, Shake hands,” urges them Purple Tigress, her arms crossed over her chest. The two look at her, evidently nervous and start shaking hands very awkwardly. Eventually, a police car arrives from the distance, probably alerted by the tenants of the surrounding buildings.
Juleka thinks, “Well, now the police will take over from me. I better go, or I'll be late!” she thinks, and then mutters,“Good, good,” and with two jumps, she disappears on the roofs, running towards the meeting place with the other two superheroes.
Now within sight of the zoo, Purple Tigress spots the silhouette of Chat Noir coming from the opposite direction to him, and places her feet on the roof in front of the entrance at the same time as the boy. The two exchange a glance and Chat Noir comments "Strange, Ladybug hasn't arrived yet."
She doesn't have time to finish the sentence that the sound of the yo yo wire makes them turn and a slightly breathless Ladybug appears on the roof "Thank goodness I managed to leave the decorations ... I have to tell Alya to have the lock checked He thinks, trying to hide her shortness of breath. "Here I am! Everything OK?"
"Purr-fect, now that you're here!" Chat replies
"Yes, a small car accident but all settled." says Purple Tigress, then whispers "It was enough to scare them a little"
Ladybug nods, catching her breath.
In the distance you can hear a bell ringing a single time, Chat Noir looks at the girls, makes a bow leaning on the stick “Well, it's time to say goodbye. Thanks for my pawsome company! " he says theatrically.
Ladybug takes the yo-yo from her waist, as Chat Noir nonchalantly approaches Purple Tigress and rubs his back on hers, in a very feline gesture.
She whispers, "What are you doing, Chat?"
"What you suggested to me to do," whispers him back.
"But I said to let yourself go as Adrien, I didn't tell you to start flirting with me as Chat!" she whispers again.
"Oh, so you mean that when I'm Adrien, I can do it?" he asks, faking innocence.
"Pff ... I didn't say that!" hisses Purple Tigress.
Ladybug turns towards them, sees what Chat Noir is doung and facepalms with a big sigh.
Purple Tiger stretch an arm behind Chat Noir’s head, scratching him near his ear.
Suddenly, a low rhythmic vibration rises from the boy's throat, his eyes widening in surprise as he hears himself doing it.
Purple Tigress also freezes, takes her hand away and looks at Chat Noir. "Did you... just....you purred!"
"Wha—? Did I? No way—!" He shields himself by putting his hands out, but the sound from his throat doesn't stop.
Ladybug can't hold back a smile, her arms crossed across her chest.
"Yup! And you're still doing it! Come here, kittykittykitty!” Purple Tigress reaches out to him and scratches his head again in the same place, laughing. An even louder sound comes from Chat Noir's throat as he tries to wriggle out, his face as red as Ladybug's costume. The latter keeps looking at them with her arms crossed.
"Don't make fun of me," he mumbles. "I'm sure that… if I scratch behind your ears…you will make them too, purr ..." and he ends up putting himself in the same position as Ladybug, still all red
"Chat, you should know that tigers, like all big cats, unable to purr. " Ladybug says, sighing in exasperation.
“Come on, Ladybug, it's fun! He's such a…a cat! "
"Are you finished, you two?" exclaims the heroine in red again, sulking
"M'lady, won't you be jealous of me-ow?" asks Chat Noir, winking the eye
"Jealous, me? Not even by idea, mon minou… ”Ladybug replies, her pout transformed into a treacherous smile. "Move, Tiger, after all this kitty has TWO ears!" “No, what are you doing? No, it's embarrassing! " Chat Noir raises his voice, putting his hands forward, but the two girls have joined him and each is scratching his head behind his ear. "Stop it now...." he starts to protest, then, while the purr is getting stronger, he relaxes "aaah no please… ok keep going on!".
Ladybug and Purple Tigress immediately let Chat Noir go, exchange glances, and burst out laughing.
Finally, Chat Noir regains control enough to stop purring. "I-I have to go," he announces, looking maybe genuinely sorry about it. "Sweet dreams, girls!" greets, taking the stick to jump on the building opposite.
"We better go too, Tiger, I want to show you something before I go home," exclaims Ladybug, twirling her yo-yo and hooking it to a lamppost. The other girl nods and steps closer, allowing Ladybug to put her arm around her waist and jump.
Thanks to her yo-yo, Ladybug moves faster than the others who can only run and jump. So it takes her only a minute to reach the Eiffel Tower.
As they jump from beam to beam to get to the top, Purple Tigress sees that the fourth sector of her Miraculous starts flashing. "Oh, geez ..." she mumbles under her breath, as she jumps onto the platform at the base of the antenna at the top of the Iron Lady.
“I thought I'd bring you here. To say thank you for your great help today,” explains Ladybug, turning towards the view.
Juleka follows the other girl's gaze and suddenly, the beeping of her Miraculous becomes the least of her worries as her eyes widen in awe and admiration. The view of the city lights all lit up and flickering under the dark sky under the rays of the half-moon is so pretty that it's taking her breath away. It's not every day that you can admire a sight like that. She had already, in the past, gone up the tower to look at the view, but what you could see from the tourist platform was nothing compared to this. This was different…more intimate and wonderful.
A light breeze rises and hits the two girls. "Wow! It's beautiful here, Ladybug," comments Purple Tigress with a faint voice, as her transformation ends making her come back to being Juleka.
But as soon as the transformation ends, Juleka feels the cold metal of the floor under her bare feet, and the chilly breeze on her legs. "Oh, dear," she squeaks.
Ladybug turns seeing the purple glow and finds Juleka hug her waist with one hand and try to prevent the hem of her shirt from rising to reveal her underwear with the other. She sees her crouching down as soon as the sense of surprise fades, but gets even more embarrassed as she does that and realizes that maybe this position flashes even more skin. Ladybug does try to hold herself together, but she had never seen Juleka so embarrassed and eventually she bursts out in a little laugh. "Juleka, don't say I didn't warn you!"
“L-Ladybug, don't make fun of me, please! I know it's my fault," she says apologetically.
"Don't worry, nobody can see you up here! " comments Ladybug noticing how Juleka kept looking around.
Juleka looks at herself from bottom to top, still in a crouch. "Now h-how am I going home?" she stammers, even more embarrassed as the reality of the situation sinks into her.
Ladybug gives her a serious look, then moves her gaze to the purple kwami who had appeared in a flash of violet as her transformation had faded. "Sorry, Roaar, you'll have to settle for a cookie," she tells it, taking the sweet treat from her yo-yo.
The kwami nods, picks up the snack offered by the guardian and starts to eat the cookie. “Don't worry, Juleka, you'll be home again very soon. I like that you were so looking forward to transforming that you did that while in your pajamas, but maybe next time..."
Juleka mumbles something almost incomprehensible that sounds like, "Don't you start too!” Then, she gets up, her arms still wrapped around her middle, and begins to move nervously, looking at her feet.
"I'll need a shower when i get home," he mutters.
Roaar flies in front of her face. “I'm ready! You know the words!” the kwami announces.
“Yeah. Roaar, stripes on!" exclaims the girl, transforming back into Purple Tigress. "Oh, this is so much better," she comments. Then she looks at the shorter girl and sighs. "Sorry, Ladybug, I haven't been very careful this time!"
“Ah, don't worry, Juleka, you're still getting used to all this. The first time I used my power I ended up falling on Chat Noir and tying both up with my yo-yo. Now that was embarrassing,” she says.
Purple Tigress looks at her, eyes wide. "Really?"
Ladybug nods and then asks, "Shall we go?"
The other girl nods and a few minutes later, Purple Tigress slips into the Liberty's porthole, then gives the bracelet back to Ladybug who has remained outside. "See you soon, Juleka," says Ladybug. "But next time..." She smiles. "...put on a pair of pants!" She winks at her, then zips away, followed by Juleka's soft laugh. +++ Part 3 || Part 5

Purple Noir Week

Day 2 - Swap
Shortcutter
Summary
When Ladybug asks Purple Tigress to take her place during a patrol (because Marinette is busy preparing a birthday party for Adrien), Juleka discovers by accident the identity of her feline companion, and not only. She finds out how hurt Chat Noir is that Ladybug keeps him in the dark. So, even thanks to the Miraculous lifting her confidence, Juleka decides to help him, like he did when she needed support (Guiltrip). But things aren't as easy as they look…
Miraculous: tales of Ladybug e Chat Noir - Zagtoon, Method Animation, Toei Animation, SAMG Animation, De Agostini Editore, Nelvana, Cartoon Network Studios All rights are reserved to their owners.
With a yawn, Juleka walks off the Liberty gangway and heads off to school. She didn't sleep well at all the previous night, continuing to mull over Chat Noir, Adrien, Ladybug and Marinette. Even as she walks towards the Collège Françoise Dupont, she keeps thinking about it.
“If Adrien is really in love with Ladybug, Marinette has no hope. It would be so sad. Already breaking up with Luka was traumatic for her, just imagine if they hadn't broken up by mutual agreement. On the other hand, Ladybug doesn't seem to care about Chat in THAT sense, and it's Adrien who is upset... so I could push him towards Marinette! Yesterday I saw that he kept looking towards her house, and at the picnic we had on Heroes' Day, he spoke so highly of her. Or maybe ... "Juleka can't hold back a smile. "Maybe I've been hanging out with Alya a little too much ... I'm starting to ship them too."
Absorbed by these thoughts, Juleka passes in front of Tom & Sabine's Patisserie and is almost knocked out by a storming Marinette, who rushes out the door with a croissant in her mouth and an apple in her hand. Juleka watches, bum on the ground, as her classmate stops at the pedestrian traffic light and waits for green, continuing to run on the spot.
With half a smile, Juleka approaches Marinette and waves at her. When the pigtailed girl sees her she swallows her brioche and exclaims, “Hi Juleka! Are you also late? That's unusual!"
"Hi, Marinette, we're not late!" replies Juleka, frowning as she takes her cell phone and shows it to her friend.
Marinette suddenly freezes, burying her head in her shoulders. "Phiew ... I must have seen time wrong ... we're not late. Well, makes a change, I can look for the best place to sit in the art room! Today Pierre Rocheux will come to the school to show us his work the statue commissioned by the Collège!"
The traffic light turns green and Marinette runs across the street, heading towards the school gate. "See you later, Juleka!" she says. Then, going up the stairs, she looks at Tikki in her small pochette and whispers, “I really hope that one of the models will be Adrien…”
Juleka stands still, watching Marinette, then shakes her head and follows her. The girl is about to pass the gate of the building when she sees the Agreste's sedan leave, after having let Adrien out, her gaze following the blond as he crosses the sidewalk to enter the school.
Before climbing the stairs, Juleka nods to Adrien, and he responds with a smile as he gets closer to her and greets her with a warm, "Good morning!" Then, he looks at the school gate just in time to see Marinette disappearing behind it and adds, a puzzled look on his face, “Did I just see Marinette? Wow, she's on time for once, what happened?"
Juleka responds to the greeting with a shy “Hi”, then muffles a giggle at Adrien's remark about Marinette. “It's the sculptor's event today,” she explains, taking a look around. Eventually, she looks at Adrien and asks, “Do you have a couple of minutes? I would like to talk to you."
"Uh ... yeah, okay! Of ... of what?" says Adrien, his hand reaching the usual spot behind his nape. The girl doesn't answer and goes up the stairs, moving to a corner of the courtyard. Adrien can only follow her, a bit wary of the way she's looking left and right as if to ensure that no prying eyes would be spying on them. "I hope she won'ìt say that Ladybug is mad at me ..." he thinks as he gulps dryly.
"Adrien, maybe it's none of my business but .. I know you feel bad about…her…always rejecting you. I think maybe you should ... Well, look around, you're a—" Juleka pauses, blushing slightly and lowering her voice "...handsome boy and…"
Adrien interrupts her "...and a superhero, which messes things up with the love apparently…or at least did so with Kagami, everything went wrong with her because of that. "
"It's already difficult as it is... if he interrupts me it gets even worse...what do I do? Do I throw the bomb and run?" thinks Juleka. Then she looks at him, takes a breath and starts again, "Let me finish, please..." Her gaze softens a little as he raises a hand to his nape apologetically. "Why don't you try to, for example, change targets?"
Adrien looks at her, making a face. "Kagami told me the same and she ..." he starts, but Juleka puts a finger on his lips and shushes him.
"There's a difference here, Adrien. I may recognize that you're a handsome boy, and I may want to help you because I'm your friend, but I won't throw myself in the mix because, no offense, but you're not my type."
What she says causes Adrien to blush deep red. The boy's gaze is lost for a moment, then goes back to looking at Juleka. "Ok, you're probably right, sorry Juleka. But where do I find someone like Ladybug?" He seems lost in his thoughts for a moment and then he continues, stretching a finger up for every count on the list: "She must be cute, intelligent, brave, always ready to help others, sweet..."
As he carries on with his list, Juleka smiles softly and holds his gaze. "Come on, Adrien. I'm positive that there are lots of girls who are cute, brave, altruistic and sweet, right? For example…what about Marinette? You were the one who told her that she was our 'Everyday Ladybug' at the picnic we had on Heroes' Day! Besides, she's been so down since she broke up with my brother…"
Adrien widens his eyes for a split second, then says in a low whisper, "Uh, well, she's…well she's very pretty, all right. But I always seem to embarrass her, maybe because I'm famous? Maybe because of my father? You know, when Jagged, uh, your dad, showed my pictures on her wall, the day he did that program at her house, I mean, I asked her if...and she said she sees me as a friend." Adrien pauses. "And then...Don't tell anyone but some time ago she told me she was in love with Chat noir-me. I was very surprised, I didn't think Chat Noir was her type!"
Juleka gasps. "What? And silly me wanted to provide him with a bombshell revelation…"
The blond, again looking blankly in front of him, doesn't seem to notice her reaction and continues, "Then I explained to her that, well,, I love Ladybug, and his father was akumatized!" He cringed. "You have no idea how scary Tom Dupain is when he gets angry!"
“I'm not surprised…” mumbles Juleka.
“After that, I spoke to Marinette and she told me that she understood and that she could get over it and when I told her I, Chat Noir-me I mean, wanted to stay friends with her, she agreed to it," concludes Adrien, glancing nervously at his cell phone.
“Well, if her declaration of love to Chat Noir surprised you, if you thought that Chat wasn't her type while instead she told him that she loved him, don't you think it could be the same with Adrien-you too?" insists Juleka, thinking, "If Marinette finds out that I'm saying this to him she'll kill me stone dead..."
Adrien rubs one of his feet against his ankle, nervously. "Seriously, I don't think she likes me...and she's always, um, tense when I talk to her."
“Maybe she's just a little intimidated by how perfect you are? Sorry if I say so, Adrien, but sometimes you're a little too…Mr Perfect. You should learn to let yourself go a little!"
He stretched the hand he carries his umbrella with towards Marinette. She tentatively takes it from him, a little hesitant. The fingers of the two teens touch and Adrien for a moment has a strange sensation, not at all unpleasant. Marinette grabs the umbrella's handle and it closes on her head. A moment of hesitation later, Adrien bursts out laughing, immediately imitated by Marinette herself.
Adrien blinks a couple of times, back to the present, and again reaches with his hand to his nape. “N-no problem, Juleka .. They already told me that. Do you think I should…"
Plagg peeps out from inside Adrien's shirt. "Kitten! Don't even consider the idea of flirting openly with her like you do with Ladybug, or Pigtails will combust for embarrassment!"
"Shush, Plagg, and stay hidden!" snaps Adrien, turning as red as a tomato.
Juleka chuckles, covering her mouth with one hand. “Seriously, Adrien. If you don't try, you will never know. When Ladybug gave me the Tiger Miraculous, you have no idea how scared I was of not making it, but I did!"
"Juleka, you do know Marinette better than me..." says Adrien tentatively, looking for the right words. "Do you think she might have a crush on me?"
Juleka cringed. "Uh! N-no, well, I d-don't really know…" J
At that, Plagg rolls his eyes. "Polite reminder that you're late for school now," he says sarcastically. "Kitten, you don't want to keep your fans waiting!"
“Stop it, Plagg. And hide, I already told you. But you're right, we will be late if we don't go!" Adrien cuts short, walking towards the staircase leading to the inner courtyard.
Adrien and Juleka enter the art room just before the bell rang and take a deep sigh of relief, as even though there were no regular classes that day, the Headmaster gives them a dirty look.
Marinette turns to the door, immediately giving her attention back to Alya, as soon as she realizes that Adrien is waving at her.
When everyone has taken their seats, Principal Damocles clears his throat, takes a microphone and begins to speak, “Dear students! As you know, the Mayor has decided to donate a statue to our school that will symbolize the act of teaching. The work has been commissioned to the famous sculptor Pierre Rocheux, who decided that he will take as models two of our students, a boy and a girl. In the past few days, we have asked your parents for permission to send your class photos to the artist, who has already made an initial selection of candidates. The legal formalities have already been taken care of, so today we will be informed of who the two lucky models for the statue will be. Rocheux's work will be exhibited in our internal courtyard at completion." The man pauses for effect and points to a figure next to him. "But it's time to let the artist speak."
A middle-aged, grizzled, medium-sized man comes forward. He has a head of gray, neatly combed hair that reaches his shoulders, and a gray beard, accurately groomed and equally long, tied from halfway on in two parallel braids.
He takes the microphone and after having politely greeted the students and the teachers gathered around him, he begins, “Today I'll choose the two models for my work, as Mr Damocles has very kindly explained. I already have some ideas, but I much rather make my mind by seeing the models in person rather than just basing myself on a photograph."
He turns towards the center of the classroom, towards two platforms; one is empty and one contains a rectangular-shaped object, covered by a cloth. The sculptor reaches out and removes the cloth, revealing a block of white marble and solemnly explains,“This is the raw material. I brought it with me because marble is not all the same, as Michelangelo rightly said, every block hides a sculpture inside of it and the duty of the artist isn't to forge the work of art, but rather to reveal what is already hidden in the block. Now I leave the microphone to Professor Damocles, who will explain much more eloquently than me the whole process."
As the headmaster picks up the microphone and pulls an envelope out of his jacket's pocket, Adrien hears Chloé giggle and whisper something to Sabrina.
Mr Damocles opens the envelope and clears his throat again. “Mr. Rocheux indicated the following students as possible candidates for the role.
Boy: Adrien Agreste, Michel Bernard, Marc Enciel. Girls: Chloé Bourgeois, Marinette Dupain-Cheng and Colette Gauthier. Those whom I called, please come forward."
All eyes fall on Chloé and Marinette, in the front row of the classroom, while the other two boys, he taller than Adrien, faded sweatshirt and black jeans, short black hair, gray eyes and a regular face and the girl of Alya-like build, long brown hair and dark eyes, black miniskirt and beige blouse, step forward from the fourth row.
Marinette hears her name and gasps, forgetting to breathe. “Oh my God, what now? It's impossible that the scuptor chose me. Plain ole me…with Adrien? Oh my God! Now what do I do? I'm not wearing my lucky socks! It's going to be a disaster! He will choose me and Adrien, I will fall on him, breaking that beautiful nose of his, his father will take him out of school, he will hate me for the rest of his life and we'll never have a house, three children and a hamster named..."
"Marinette!" calls Alya, nudging her in the ribs. “Close that mouth of yours, girl, or you'll catch the flies! And don'ìt stand here like a dummy, go! They're waiting for you!" She points at the group of teenagers already gathered next to the artist and the headmaster. The pigtailed girl gets up and with a tight smile walks away from Alya, who whispers, "Smile more naturally, it looks as if you have a stroke, Mari!"
"Ridiculous, absolutely ridiculous," protests Chloé, as expected. "I don't want to share the choice with these two peasants. ESPECIALLY Dupain-Cheng. I don't even know who the other one is after all…" she says, making a dismissive gesture with her hand.
The Headmaster approaches her. "Miss Bourgeois, the choice has not yet been made, it could be you or any of the other two girls the one to represent ..."
But Chloé interrupts him, hissing a grumpy, "Tsk! Wait for me to let my daddykins know that you put me in competitions with tww peasants! Daddy's the mayor, he's paying for this. He obviously would withdraw the donation if I wasn't chosen." Then, ignoring the headmaster, she approaches the sculptor, pointing her index finger straight at his face. “And you, Mr. Pierrot or whatever your name is, choose well. Which means you only have one choice. Moi. And Adrikins."
Hearing that nickname Adrien stiffens, and Marinette gives Chloé a fierce glare.
The sculptor shrugs and doesn't even bother to answer to her. "Could you guys please get in line here?" he asks, pointing at the empty platform.
The aspiring models line up next to each other, looking all a little nervous. Well, all except Adrien, whoìs perfectly still and at ease, and Chloé, who insead looks grumpy, humphing haughtily with her arms folded across her chest, a finger tapping rhythmically on her other arm, in sync with her right foot tapping the floor.
Rocheux reviews the boys, his gaze shifting between their faces and the block of marble, then he asks, "You two, girls, would you mind untying your hair?"
Marinette doesn't mind taking off the rubber bands and letting her black hair fall over her shoulders. As she does that, Adrien's gaze reaches for Juleka who points to Marinette with a slight nod of her head. The boy turns mechanically where the girl is pointing at, ending up completely unprepared to the vision coming to his eyes as his gaze locks into Marinette's. He gulps awkwardly, thinking, "she looks so beautiful with her hair down!"
But he doesn't have the time to check on his feelings, because Chloé starts protesting and raising her voice. "Of course I'm not going to do that. Do you even realize how much it cost me to have my hair styled this way? I won't destroy a perfect hairstyle for a stupid statue. Ridiculous, utterly ridiculous. Just wait for Daddykins to know about all this. He won't be happy at all!” Then, in a fit of rage, she leaves her place in the queue and walks to Sabrina, stretching her hand in front of her. "What are you waiting for you idiot? Give me my phone!" Then she grabs the other girl by the arm and haughtily walks out of the classroom.
Juleka, Alya, Nino, Adrien and Marinette follow her with their gazes, having the dread feeling in the pit of their stomach that soon they'll have to face another akumatized victim.
"Hmm," mumbles the sculptor, again observing the boys for a long moment. He simulates a kind of rectangle with his hands, framing the marble and the boys one by one; then he approaches the block and knocks on the surface with a wooden hammer.
The only one who doesn't seem to mind is Adrien, while the others are obviously very nervous and nearly hold heir breaths.
After a time that seems interminable Rocheux declares "I found the features hidden in the raw material of this block." He turns to the audience briefly, and then to the models. "You," he says and points to Adrien, who nods. "And you", the sculptor continues, pointing to Marinette, who feels her knees getting weak and risk fainting, promptly supported by Adrien just next to her.
As soon as the boy's hands touch her sides, Marinette regains her balance and blushes violently. "S-sorry, it's just…it's hot here," she mumbles, fanning herself.
Juleka takes Rose's hand next to her and squeezes it, while with the other she raises her thumb up towards Adrien, who looks a little baffled but doesn't complain.
After dismissing the other aspiring models with a handshake, Rocheux introduces himself to the two chosen ones and begins to explain how he will proceed.
Immediately a buzz of chatter arises from Marinette and Adrien's classmates, until the Headmaster silences them with a cough.
"Okay. What are your names…oh yes. Adrien and Marinette. Get on the platform, please," urges the sculptor, placing a wooden cube to one side. Adrien goes up first and stretches out his hand to Marinette. She takes it without thinking too much of it and the boy, as she climbs, bends over and touches her fingers with his lips, causing an "ooh" from Rose and a couple of other girls. Marinette blushes violently and stands still for a moment, then removes her hand as if it were burnt.
Rocheux makes the two try various poses, taking pictures with an old Polaroid camera and observing them critically. Adrien follows the instructions to the letter, as he's used to do that during photoshoots, while Marinette is more clumsy, as well as not being able to look Adrien in the eye and feeling quite warm in the face each time he approaches her, so much so that at a certain point she starts to fan herself again with both her hands. "Did they turn up the heating?" she mumbles to herself. Adrien stares at her and whispers “No, Marinette, the temperature hasn't changed at all. Are you alright? You look a little flustered!"
She cringed at the remark. “G-great! Never been better! " she screeches, her voice a couple of octaves higher than it should have been.
The other students look at the two curiously for a while, but eventually they lose interest and the classroom empties slowly, leaving only the sculptor with Adrien, Marinette and their classmates.
Suddenly Rocheux approaches the two models, frozen in a pose, and blurts out “Here's what's wrong! Too many clothes! Adrien, take off your shirt, Marinette, your blazer. And take off any jewels too. They ruin the symmetry of your couple!"
Adrien and Marinette look at each other, blushing violently. "What?" they ask at the same time.
The sculptor glares at them. "Come on, you've heard me. We don't have all day!"
"Well, he's not that bad," thinks Adrien as he obediently takes his white shirt off. "He's no different from Vincent or Giuseppe. Marinette seems very nervous, though… maybe I can try to say something to take her mind away from it." As he thinks that, he looks softly at his friend and leans closer to her, whispering into her ear, "Look on the bright side, Marinette. At least you won't feel too warm anymore!"
But Marinette blushes a deeper shade of red. "Yes, but..." she starts to say, then she bites her lower lip and looks at Alya, who's now standing next to her, stretching her hands towards her expectantly. A gleam of comprehension flashes in Marinette's eyes, and the girl takes off her blazer and purse, handling them to her friend with trembling hands. Then she sighs and, looking straight into Alya's eyes, she removes her earrings and places them carefully in Alya's palm. She only relaxes when her friend mouths back at her something that sounds like, "Don't worry!" and winks at her.
Just as Adrien was scratching his head and starting to wonder what would Marinette have to worry about leaving her earrings in Alya's hands, Juleka approaches him and grabs his arm, glancing very seriously at his ring. The two exchange a nod of understanding, and the boy gives her the shirt he had already taken off. Then he slips his ring solemnly from his finger and entrusts that to her too.
When they return to the platform, the two teens try again the pose that the sculptor had requested last, but Rocheux is still dissatisfied. “Oh dear, that's what it is! It's these stripy lines. It won't work, I can't concentrate on my creation. Adrien, take your t-shirt off."
The boy obeys without thinking too much about it but as he reveals his naked torso, he hears Marinette swallow hard next to him.
"Don't stare, don't stare, don't stare" she repeats into her head like a mantra, but eventually gives up. "Gah! Too late!" she thinks with a sigh as her gaze locks to Adrien's bare chest for a long moment, her face feeling hotter and hotter, until she nearly jumps out of her skin when the sculptor addresses her instead,
"Can you do the same please? Those flowery decorations are very distracting too," the man asks.
Marinette looks at him, then she gives a quick glance at Adrien's face. The boy is in full model mode and features an indecipherable poker face that Marinette feels to envy with all her heart. “Get a grip, Marinette! You saw even more than this that day at the pool, and you weren't even half as embarrassed as this. What's the difference? And besides, I'm just a friend to him! " she thinks, as she grabs the hem of her top with one hand, while the other holds the vest she's wearing underneath to not flash too much skin unnecessarily. So she takes her top off, tossing it on the floor. Adrien's expression falters when he catches a glimpse of Marinette's bare belly and navel, and suddenly the boy starts getting very distracted by the freckles that the girl has on her shoulders. "Come on, Adrien, what's happening to you? You've seen her already in her pajamas and bathing suit, this isn't that different after all!" he thinks, but he can't prevent a pink blush to dust his cheeks and the ridge of his nose.
Satisfied, Rocheux tells Marinette, who's by now at the edge of self combustion, to sit down on the cube. He hands her a box, telling her to give it to Adrien, and telling Adrien to kneel on one knee in front of her with his arm outstretched. They are about to try a different pose when the sculptor puts down the camera and takes his cell phone from his pocket, muttering an apology and gettin out of the classroom.
Adrien and Marinette exchange an embarrassed look and Adrien tries to relieve the tension again. "He looked happier now," he says, pointing to the door behind which the sculptor seemed to be having a heated conversation on the phone. "You'll see, we'll be finished soon." Then he looks down at his bare chest, his hand running to his nape. "Uh, I'm used to it, it's nothing new to me. You, on the other hand, are doing very well for being your first time!" he says, in an attempt to reassure her.
"Ah y-yes you're fin—er, I mean, it's fin—I mean, thank you Adrien! But I'm not good at all," she replies, stumbling over her words
"That's definitely not true, you're very good!" he retorts, winking at her playfully. “To be completely honest with you, I've never had so much fun in one of my father's photoshoots. You're creating the mood, Marinette. You're fantastic!"
What saves Marinette from a heart attack (because her heart is threatening to explode in her chest as her gaze gets lost in his beautiful green eyes), is the commotion that comes from outside.
Suddenly the door swings open, literally torn from its hinges, and before anyone can react, a figure enters the room. It has the same hairstyle as Rocheux but wears a purple leather apron, has a beret and holds a chisel “You. Don't waste my time! I'm Shortcutter, and I'm in a hurry! Hold on still, you are perfect like this! " he orders Marinette and Adrien, then points the chisel in his hand towards them, hitting them with a beam of light.
"Marinette, watch out!" Adrien acts instinctively and rushes towards his classmate to take her out of the beam's trajectory, but he doesn't have his superpowers to protect him, so they both end up hit. With a dull thud, a bas-relief featuring the two teens wrapped in a tight hug falls to the ground.
Juleka throws herself on the ground as soon as she sees the door open and, taking advantage of the hustle and bustle, drags herself on her elbows and all fours, managing to slip into the bathroom adjacent to the art room. A black dot immediately reaches her, as Plagg appears in front of her, panic in his electric green eyes. "Bangs, I have a feline you'll have to change…feline…" he exclaims, pointing to Adrien's ring, which she holds in her hand.
Juleka looks at it, looks at Plagg, then puts the ring on. "Okay, Plagg." She shoots him a determined glance. "But don't ever call me Bangs again, okay?" she hisses, but immediately after smiles at the Kwami "Come on, tell me what to do. And be quick, Ladybug will need our help!"
Plagg gives her a sideways glare, then explains the basics to her. Juleka whispers, "I can do it!" and then says louder, "Plagg, Claws out!"
Alya swears between her teeth. "Damn Chloé, why is she ALWAYS the one to be involved?"
She drags Nino with her and manages to hide both behind a screen just in time. From the classroom come screams and a series of thuds. Peering from under the cloth, the two see that the classroom is now full of bas-reliefs of running students.
Alone in the now empty classroom, Shortcutter shouts, “So, where do I find Miss Bourgeois? I want to make her life easier, I'll give her a PERMANENT hairstyle!” Then he turns to look around. He stops outside for a moment, then re-enters the room, heading towards Nino and Alya's hiding place. "Gotcha!" he exclaims, throwing a beam towards the floor.
Alya closes her eyes and crouches defensively on the ground, thinking, "Here, it's the end!" But as she thinks that, she realizes that actually, she can move. She opens her eyes again just to see to her horror that a bas-relief portraying Nino stands now in the space between her and the door. The rest of the classroom is deserted.
“Now you will deal with Scarabella,” she growls. “I won't allow you to petrify my friends! And especially not Nino, he's my boyfriend!" Trixx peeks out of her pouch but stays put, while Tikki gets out of Marinette's bag and joins them.
"Tikki, Spots on!" whisper the brunette.
