A pair of turquoise-throated puffleg hummingbirds, illustrated alongside a flower of the genus Vriesea, by English ornithologist John Gould for the fourth volume of “A Monograph of the Trochilidæ, Or Family of Humming-Birds Volume”. Although listed as Critically Endangered, the likelihood of this species’ continued survival is slim, with nearly all their known habitat having been destroyed. [ x ]

Gorgeted Puffleg (Eriocnemis isabellae)
Tumblr media
"HE IS WEARING PANTS!!!! I love hummingbirds they are so cute all of the time..." "How can a bird be so perfect. It’s like they have little leg warmers."
This is actually a bird that one of my irl friends submitted, and I wanted to roll on the ground when I saw the pics. He truly is wearing pants!
This species was first discovered in 2005, and officially recognized as its own species in 2007. They're listed as Critically Endangered, as their habitat is incredibly localized.
The gorgeted puffleg is known only from the Serranía del Pinche in the Western Andes of Colombia's Department of Cauca. The habitat is characterized by steep slopes of very humid cloudforest and elfin forest with rocky outcrops and natural clearings. The vegetation is dominated by Andean oak (Quercus humboldtii) with an understory of Ericaceae and several other plant families. In elevation this habitat is found mainly between 2,600 and 2,900 m (8,500 and 9,500 ft).

cactus ⇢ something you’re currently learning (about)?
HI!! OK SO not sure if this counts but I really want to talk about it so: THERE'S THIS GROUP OF HUMMINGBIRD SPECIES COLLECTIVELY CALLED PUFFLEGS
and they. have. PANTS.
Tumblr media
I found one article saying that apparently, the extra leg fluff not for warmth! Hummingbirds at higher, colder elevations do not have the floof on their legs! So the pants appear to be purely decorative!
Tumblr media
Also they have the floof regardless of sex! All pufflegs got pants!

Anyway thank you for coming to my ted talk, in conclusion THESE BIRDS GOT PANTS

Happy Valentine’s Day!
Here’s some characters I decided to bring back that I made 2 years ago
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is Helga and Flint, my two lovebirds. They live in a world of odd looking bird people. Helga is an aristocratic Utahraptor, she appears randomly to everyone to attend fancy parties. People find her somewhat intimidating due to her quiet nature. The only person she is seen regularly talking to is Flint, a little charismatic bartender (particularly skilled in wines). He is based off of a spade-tailed puffleg hummingbird. Quite a mouthful but I think you get the vision.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I always thought it would be funny to make characters who are based off of the largest and smallest scaled dinosaurs to be in love.
If you notice I already have a character named Helga, no you didn’t.
Anyways, I thought it would be appropriate to share them today. Enjoy!
