Bowen's Daily Meditations

by Rev. George Bowen
Devotional for October 28th
"I will run the way of thy commandments, when thou shalt enlarge my heart." - Psalms 119:32
God enlarges our heart by taking away from it the idea of our own righteousness and of our own strength; by taking away from us hardness of heart and insensibility; by delivering us from the oppressive fear of an offended God; by casting out a great deal of selfishness; by breathing into us the new life of faith in Christ, and making us buoyant with the delightful assurance of God’s undeclining favor; by the love of God shed abroad in our hearts.
Then no wonder that we run the way of his commandments. These are no longer grievous, for they are paired with promises; and with every indication of duty there is an indication of help. We run; we have not now to be dragged. It is no longer the place of task; it is the place of pleasant communion and co-operation with him who has said, " Without me ye can do nothing." The way of his commandments, is simply a way where love finds beautiful opportunities of expressing itself.
But alas! are there not many among us that need greatly to have their hearts enlarged? Their pace in the divine course is not even a fast walk. What is it that chokes their hearts? Here is a brother, whose heart is choked, we have too much reason to fear, by an all-absorbing and exclusive attachment to " The Church;" and who is not aware how unkind a part he is acting toward that very branch of Christ’s Church which he thus ignorantly and injuriously idolizes. Here is a brother whose heart is choked by a false charity which inclines him to regard all men as pretty nearly safe, and not in need of his self-denying efforts. How many have their hearts so occupied by mercantile matters or political questions, that it is impossible for them to make haste in the doing of Christ’s commandments.

Let's Take a Walk
I’ve loved seeing the Easter photos of families enjoying their Easter celebrations – their new Easter clothes, meals together, and egg hunts. My youngest two grands (16 and 18) still hunt for the eggs that their mama “rabbit” hid in their back yard. I know Mama Rabbit’s story – she wants to hold onto the traditions for as long as she can. She even had Easter baskets for the older brothers. She…

The Parable of the Lost Sheep:
Redemption and Restoration
In the parable of the Lost Sheep, Jesus conveys a deep message about the relentless pursuit of redemption and the boundless grace of God. Let us delve into this timeless story and explore its significance in our lives today.
A certain shepherd had a hundred sheep, yet one of them strayed from the fold. Undeterred by the ninety-nine, the shepherd embarked on a relentless search for the lost sheep. He scoured the hills and valleys until, at last, he found the wayward sheep, weary and alone.
Filled with compassion, the shepherd tenderly lifted the sheep onto his shoulders and rejoiced, calling together his friends and neighbors to celebrate the sheep's return. In the same way, Jesus explains, there is more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance (Luke 15:3-7).
This parable reminds us of the depth of God's love and his unwavering commitment to seek out and restore the lost. Just as the shepherd pursued the lost sheep, so too does our Heavenly Father pursue each one of us with relentless love and compassion.
No matter how far we may have strayed, God's arms are always open wide, ready to welcome us back into His embrace. His grace knows no bounds, and His forgiveness is freely offered to all who humble themselves and turn back to Him.
The parable of the Lost Sheep challenges us to reflect on our own lives and consider those areas where we may have wandered away from God's path. It beckons us to return to the fold, to repent of our sins, and to experience the joy of reconciliation with our Heavenly Father.
Just as the shepherd rejoiced over the lost sheep's return, so too does God rejoice over each one of us when we turn back to Him. Our repentance brings joy to heaven, and our restored relationship with God brings fulfillment and purpose to our lives.
Broader context:
Parable of the Lost Sheep (Luke 15:3-7):
This is the main passage where the parable is found.
God's Pursuit of the Lost:
Ezekiel 34:16 - God seeks out the lost and brings them back to safety.
Isaiah 53:6 - We all, like sheep, have gone astray, but the Lord laid on Jesus the iniquity of us all.
Matthew 18:12-14 - Jesus' teaching about the shepherd who leaves the ninety-nine to seek the one lost sheep.
Psalm 119:176 - Like a lost sheep, seek your servant, for I have not forgotten your commands.
God's Rejoicing over Repentance:
Luke 15:10 - There is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.
Luke 15:32 - It was fitting to celebrate and be glad, for your brother was dead, and is alive; he was lost, and is found.
Acts 3:19 - Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out.
God's Unfailing Love and Faithfulness:
Psalm 23:1-3 - The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul.
Psalm 36:5 - Your steadfast love, O Lord, extends to the heavens, your faithfulness to the clouds.
Psalm 136:1 - Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever.
Lamentations 3:22-23 - The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.
The Shepherd's Role as a Metaphor for Jesus:
John 10:11 - I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.
Hebrews 13:20 - Now may the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant.
Call to Repentance and Restoration:
Joel 2:12-13 - "Yet even now," declares the Lord, "return to me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning; and rend your hearts and not your garments."
Revelation 3:20 - Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.
The Joy of Salvation:
Romans 15:13 - May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.
Psalm 51:12 - Restore to me the joy of your salvation and uphold me with a willing spirit.
Questions:
Have I strayed from God's path, and if so, am I willing to humble myself and turn back to Him?
Do I fully grasp the depth of God's love and His relentless pursuit of me, even in my moments of wandering?
How can I share the message of God's grace and redemption with others who may feel lost or disconnected from Him?
What steps can I take to deepen my relationship with God and experience the fullness of His joy and restoration in my life?
Let us pray:
Heavenly Father, we thank you for your unwavering love and grace, demonstrated to us through the parable of the Lost Sheep. Give us the courage to humble ourselves, repent of our sins, and return to you with open hearts. May we never forget the depth of your love for us and the joy that comes from being reconciled to you. In Jesus' name, amen.

Ephesians 2:10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.
Isaiah 64:8 But now, O LORD, thou art our father; we are the clay, and thou our potter; and we all are the work of thy hand.
Psalm 119:73 Thy hands have made me and fashioned me: give me understanding, that I may learn thy commandments.
Isaiah 29:15 Woe unto them that seek deep to hide their counsel from the LORD, and their works are in the dark, and they say, Who seeth us? and who knoweth us?29:16 Surely your turning of things upside down shall be esteemed as the potter's clay: for shall the work say of him that made it, He made me not? or shall the thing framed say of him that framed it, He had no understanding?
Romans 9:19 Thou wilt say then unto me, Why doth he yet find fault? For who hath resisted his will?9:20 Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus?9:21 Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour?9:22 What if God, willing to shew his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction:9:23 And that he might make known the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy, which he had afore prepared unto glory,9:24 Even us, whom he hath called, not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles?9:25 As he saith also in Osee, I will call them my people, which were not my people; and her beloved, which was not beloved.9:26 And it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people; there shall they be called the children of the living God.
Deutoromy 32:5 They have corrupted themselves, their spot is not the spot of his children: they are a perverse and crooked generation.32:6 Do ye thus requite the LORD, O foolish people and unwise? is not he thy father that hath bought thee? hath he not made thee, and established thee?32:7 Remember the days of old, consider the years of many generations: ask thy father, and he will shew thee; thy elders, and they will tell thee.
Proverbs 3:6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.
Psalm 100:2 Serve the LORD with gladness: come before his presence with singing.100:3 Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.

[Astrology Is A Sin ]
Astrology tells us we don’t need God, that all our answers are in the stars. But God warned the Israelites about sorcery and divination and commanded them not to imitate any of the detestable ways of the Canaanites. In Deuteronomy, God plainly says that anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord.
In 1 Samuel 15:23, God compares divination to rebellion and arrogance, calling it the “evil of idolatry.”
Anything we place before God is an idol. It can be something totally innocuous, but if it replaces God, it becomes sinful for us (Exodus 20:3).
The Bible explains this well in Isaiah 47:13:
“All the counsel you have received has only worn you out! Let your astrologers come forward, those stargazers who make predictions month by month, let them save you from what is coming upon you.”
Since we’ve already learned that astrology wisdom is not complete, do we really want to hold its hand for the next month, or the right hand of He who knows everything, including the number of hairs on our head?
We know Satan roams around the earth, searching for who he can devour. Many people get snared in his trap by seemingly good things. But anything that moves you away from light is moving you toward darkness. Satan knows that our flesh will do whatever will make us feel better, and he knows how to lure us in a particular direction.
So, while astrology can enlighten us as we discover so many coincidences and similarities, remember that Satan is a liar. He knows a lot of things about us, but he does not know God or what God has planned for us. He tells us half-truths. Like Eve tasting the fruit because it helped attain wisdom and looked good, we can do the same with astrology, not realizing until it’s too late the consequences of that decision.
If we truly trust in God alone, we know He works all things for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose (Romans 8:28). All things have meaning, even the things that look unfair in this world. Eve thought she was missing out by not getting to eat all the fruit, but the Lord knew better.
So, if we trust God, why do we need to check another source to find answers? The Bible warns us not to bow down and serve anything aside from Him.
“And beware lest you raise your eyes to heaven, and when you see the sun and the moon and the stars, all the host of heaven, you be drawn away and bow down to them and serve them, things that the Lord your God has allotted to all the peoples under the whole heaven.” Deuteronomy 4:19
God tells us in James 1:5 that if we lack wisdom we should ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach.
If you ask me if, as a Christian, if we should follow astrology, my answer would be no. God’s Word says in Psalm 32:8 I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye on you. With God’s Word as a lamp to my feet and a light to my path (Psalm 119:105), the only sign I want to claim is a child of God.

Cleanse
You are my refuge and my shield; I have put my hope in your word. ~Psalm 119:114
A little while ago I decided to go on a Bible cleanse, and I want to tell you why that was the best decision I ever made. It's a bit of a longer post so hang in there. :)
(Disclaimer: There are some pages and preachers who are wonderful and I have learned so much from. I will forever be grateful for the effect that they have had on my life. The pages and preachers I am mentioning in this post are not those kind. They are the ones who preach fear and judgement, and gatekeep the kingdom of God for the people that they deem worthy of it.)
I spent more time in my day looking at instagram reels of someone talking about what they thought a certain Bible verse meant than I did actually reading the Bible. I was angry all the time, writing out harsh responses in the comments critiquing their misguided views on scripture. I spent hours on my phone fighting a pointless battle instead of finding peace in the word of God. I was angry, discouraged, and losing faith, but I held onto that anger because it felt important to me. Like if I wasn't indignant over these things, I was giving up on my principles.
Then I decided it was finally time to cut it all out. I hid pages and friends who consistently posted inaccurate controversial Biblical ideas to get more views. Scrolled past posts that drew politics into faith. Stopped fighting in the comment section.
I started reading a few chapters of my Bible ever day. Prayed more and told God about my day, asking for his guidance. And after a bit, I completely lost the desire to waste time on the things I did before.
Now, I am fulfilled instead of discouraged. I am bursting with hope instead of anger. Gaze straight forward on the word of God instead of the lies I was willingly allowing myself to be fed.
Sometimes it is things that hide under the guise of Christianity that actually lead us astray from God. When that begins to happen, we have to ask ourselves: Do I put my trust in the word of man, or the word of God? If any part of you says the former, it might be time to take a step back. Taking a break of "christian" influencers and pages has been eye opening for me, and it might be for you as well. We do not need anyone else to dilute our faith with their version of the truth. God's word is sufficient. Let us be overflowing with it, so that we can pour into others the love and truth that God has given us.
"If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." ~John 8:31-32

What should have our attention?
Tumblr media
Ecclesiastes 7:13
Accept the way God does things, for who can straighten what he has made crooked?
John 5:19
So Jesus explained, “I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself. He does only what he sees the Father doing. Whatever the Father does, the Son also does.”
We should pay attention to what God is doing and the way he is working in our lives and in the world around us.
Hebrews 2:3-4
So what makes us think we can escape if we ignore this great salvation that was first announced by the Lord Jesus himself and then delivered to us by those who heard him speak? And God confirmed the message by giving signs and wonders and various miracles and gifts of the Holy Spirit whenever he chose.
Luke 8:18
So pay attention to how you hear. To those who listen to my teaching, more understanding will be given. But for those who are not listening, even what they think they understand will be taken away from them.
1 Corinthians 2:2
For I decided that while I was with you I would forget everything except Jesus Christ, the one who was crucified.
We should pay attention to the message Jesus has for us. What Jesus says is reinforced by who he is—God’s Son. If Jesus was not God’s Son, he would be incapable of raising us from the dead. He would have no power to save us and take us to heaven. Think of the most important person on earth. If that person wanted to talk with you, would you listen? Would you give him or her your full attention? How much more important is the Son of God!
Psalm 119:78
I will concentrate on your commandments.
2 Peter 1:19
Because of that experience, we have even greater confidence in the message proclaimed by the prophets. You must pay close attention to what they wrote, for their words are like a lamp shining in a dark place—until the Day dawns, and Christ the Morning Star shines in your hearts.
God’s Word deserves our attention. Through his Word, God speaks to us and brings us life that last forever.
Proverbs 16:20
Those who listen to instruction will prosper; those who trust the Lord will be joyful.
Proverbs 19:27
If you stop listening to instruction, my child, you will turn your back on knowledge.
Proverbs 22:17
Listen to the words of the wise; apply your heart to my instruction.
Proverbs 5:13
Oh, why didn’t I listen to my teachers? Why didn’t I pay attention to my instructors?
Proverbs 5:1
My son, pay attention to my wisdom; listen carefully to my wise counsel.
It’s essential to pay attention to the instruction we receive from God’s Word and from wise counselors or teachers. If we don’t, we may be turning our backs on God himself.
Matthew 7:15
Beware of false prophets who come disguised as harmless sheep but are really vicious wolves.
Matthew 16:11-12
Why can’t you understand that I’m not talking about bread? So again I say, “Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.’” Then at last they understood that he wasn’t speaking about the yeast in bread, but about the deceptive teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
We must be alert to the deception of false prophets and false teachers, those who twist God’s Word to make it say whatever they want. Pay attention to their wiles, but not their words. If a person is not speaking for God, we should not accept that person’s teaching as from God.
Mark 13:32-33
However, no one knows the day or hour when these things will happen, not even the angels in heaven or the Son himself. Only the Father knows. And since you don’t know when that time will come, be on guard! Stay alert!
Luke 21:31, 34-36
In the same way, when you see all these things taking place, you can know that the Kingdom of God is near . . . Watch out! Don’t let your hearts be dulled by carousing and drunkenness, and by the worries of this life. Don’t let that day catch you unaware, like a trap. For that day will come upon everyone living on the earth. Keep alert at all times. And pray that you might be strong enough to escape these coming horrors and stand before the Son of Man.
1 Thessalonians 5:4-6
But you aren’t in the dark about these things, dear brothers and sisters, and you won’t be surprised when the day of the Lord comes like a thief. For you are all children of the light and of the day; we don’t belong to darkness and night. So be on your guard, not asleep like the others. Stay alert and be clearheaded.
Be prepared for the day when Jesus promised he would return again by paying attention to the way you live. Live as if he is coming back today.
Ephesians 6:18
Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere.
Colossians 4:2
Devote yourselves to prayer with an alert mind and a thankful heart.
Matthew 26:41
Keep watch and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak!
Your prayer life deserves your focused attention. That’s how you best connect to God himself.
1 Corinthians 16:13
Be on guard. Stand firm in the faith. Be courageous. Be strong.
1 Timothy 4:16
Keep a close watch on how you live and on your teaching. Stay true to what is right for the sake of your own salvation and the salvation of those who hear you.
1 Timothy 4:8
Physical training is good, but training for godliness is much better, promising benefits in this life and in the life to come.
The growth and strengthening of our spiritual lives deserves our attention. If it pays to exercise our bodies so we keep them healthy, how much more it pays to build our souls so they are healthy.
