You know that EVIL thing capitalism does to you?
It demands you to work for a living.
Omg the tragedy. What are you going to do? You can't just sit on your behind at home and do nothing? You can't get paid for playing video games?
Omg. So unfair. Capitalism the evil. Pure evil!!!

"For the first time in almost 60 years, a state has formally overturned a so-called “right to work” law, clearing the way for workers to organize new union locals, collectively bargain, and make their voices heard at election time.
This week, Michigan finalized the process of eliminating a decade-old “right to work” law, which began with the shift in control of the state legislature from anti-union Republicans to pro-union Democrats following the 2022 election. “This moment has been decades in the making,” declared Michigan AFL-CIO President Ron Bieber. “By standing up and taking their power back, at the ballot box and in the workplace, workers have made it clear Michigan is and always will be the beating heart of the modern American labor movement.”
[Note: The article doesn't actually explain it, so anyway, "right to work" laws are powerful and deceptively named pieces of anti-union legislation. What right to work laws do is ban "union shops," or companies where every worker that benefits from a union is required to pay dues to the union. Right-to-work laws really undermine the leverage and especially the funding of unions, by letting non-union members receive most of the benefits of a union without helping sustain them. Sources: x, x, x, x]
In addition to formally scrapping the anti-labor law on Tuesday [February 13, 2024], Michigan also restored prevailing-wage protections for construction workers, expanded collective bargaining rights for public school employees, and restored organizing rights for graduate student research assistants at the state’s public colleges and universities. But even amid all of these wins for labor, it was the overturning of the “right to work” law that caught the attention of unions nationwide...
Now, the tide has begun to turn—beginning in a state with a rich labor history. And that’s got the attention of union activists and working-class people nationwide...
At a time when the labor movement is showing renewed vigor—and notching a string of high-profile victories, including last year’s successful strike by the United Auto Workers union against the Big Three carmakers, the historic UPS contract victory by the Teamsters, the SAG-AFTRA strike win in a struggle over abuses of AI technology in particular and the future of work in general, and the explosion of grassroots union organizing at workplaces across the country—the overturning of Michigan’s “right to work” law and the implementation of a sweeping pro-union agenda provides tangible evidence of how much has changed in recent years for workers and their unions...
By the mid-2010s, 27 states had “right to work” laws on the books.
But then, as a new generation of workers embraced “Fight for 15” organizing to raise wages, and campaigns to sign up workers at Starbucks and Amazon began to take off, the corporate-sponsored crusade to enact “right to work” measures stalled. New Hampshire’s legislature blocked a proposed “right to work” law in 2017 (and again in 2021), despite the fact that the measure was promoted by Republican Governor Chris Sununu. And in 2018, Missouri voters rejected a “right to work” referendum by a 67-33 margin.
Preventing anti-union legislation from being enacted and implemented is one thing, however. Actually overturning an existing law is something else altogether.
But that’s what happened in Michigan after 2022 voting saw the reelection of Governor Gretchen Whitmer, a labor ally, and—thanks to the overturning of gerrymandered legislative district maps that had favored the GOP—the election of Democratic majorities in the state House and state Senate. For the first time in four decades, the Democrats controlled all the major levers of power in Michigan, and they used them to implement a sweeping pro-labor agenda. That was a significant shift for Michigan, to be sure. But it was also an indication of what could be done in other states across the Great Lakes region, and nationwide.
“Michigan Democrats took full control of the state government for the first time in 40 years. They used that power to repeal the state’s ‘right to work’ law,” explained a delighted former US secretary of labor Robert Reich, who added, “This is why we have to show up for our state and local elections.”"

Always follow the money.
And the pictures at the bottom are from an old strike. For the moment, keep showing the studios how important their workers are: go to the movies, stream your favorite shows, share your solidarity.

just thinking out loud again here
you can't actually win or even have arguments with me about AI art because 1. I've been living almost exclusively on selling my art online and off for like 15 years and 2. I actually understand how these image models and computers in general work. unfortunately. and 3. the people on here who are being annoying about it are having the wrong argument. they don't even know what argument they're having. but they certainly are not any of the preceding 2 things either.
my career advice to you if you want to stay in the fields where large companies are heavily incentivized to move to AI art (why?) is to either develop as an artist to the point where a robot can't take your job (I'm not talking about learning to draw real good, at least not in a way a robot can imitate, which is anything on Artstation) and/or learn to get good at prompting and cleaning up prompted images so they don't have AI tells.
my general advice is everyone bitching and moaning about AI art needs to spend at least three hours on Midjourney just messing around with prompts. you should at least know your enemy a little bit before you go around saying dumb shit on here.

I love you smile lines and worry lines and grey and white hair and wrinkles and purple spiderweb veins and the process of aging and living in a body that is standing the test of times. I love you experiences that make you wiser and stories that make you laugh, and every little process that happens to get to the point where you have so many memories because you have the fortune to be here and be so radiant
#positivity#pro aging#also i hate you 'anti aging' scams that capitalize on fear of aging. death by 1000000 papercuts for ye#saw a hair video where they restored the salt-and-pepper colour in an older clients hair and it looked SO GOOD at the end#i love when people throw in the towel and embrace their aging however that looks#it isn't productive to shame people who are ashamed of aging and i just want to. celebrate aging#in a world that simultaneously venerates youth and adulthood and hates BOTH you need to find some sense of freedom#as a Young Adult(tm) please please PLEASE older folks seeing this/following me know that i look up to you#older folks i need you to know that your worth NEVER diminished when you added a new number on your birthday cake#and your body and mind and soul NEVER lost worth because it started to creak a little at the joints#and i might be wrong about this because i'm still young but it can be SO tempted to miss your youth when you feel like...#...you've somehow LOST part of yourself by growing older. and so much of aging is about change and some things don't stay the same...#...and that IS scary and i will never once fault somebody for that. but please don't fall into the trap that because you've aged that...#...you somehow have forever lost fundamental pieces of Who You Are and you could never come back from that...#...for your own sake and sanity you deserve to find comfort and solice and understanding in who you still are...#...because you are still - at the core - the same. you can never take this away from yourself#and i know this might ring hollow because i just don't get what it's like to be older#but i have looked at my elders and felt awe at their age and their experiences#and i know what that is like and it's awesome. i just wish more older people knew that so many of us look at you with awe...#...and - if you can believe it - some of us ENVY your age or experiences or even body#i'm watching an 'older' content creator (older by internet standards 🙄) and i envy him for how eventful his life was#i envy that he experienced a different world - one that i have only heard about from my dad because i was too young to remember it#and i admire this person for their wisdom and thoughts because they've come from his experiences living in a Different World#it's that type of stuff that makes me unafraid to keep on living#inspired by following somebody like. twice my age posting about their excitement abiut growing older and !!!!!!! YEAHHHHHH#didn't realize they were closer to my dad's age but that's so cool???????????

memoria is incredibly close to my heart, but when i listen to it now, it's hard not to think about the undertones re: how therapy as an institution handles disability. maxwell's objective was always to help hera get back to work, to find accommodations she could function under, or otherwise to replace her. "i'm sorry you feel like you can't do your job." maxwell presents her solutions in a less hostile framing, but her methods are the same ones cutter threatens hera with in her live show performance review (re: deleting her memories) and it's something she intends to do regardless of hera's consent. maxwell's practice aligns with goddard's interests, and of course it does. there's something about therapy as maintenance, and the treatment of the disabled mind and/or body as a broken machine.
hera is used to being condescended to and taunted for her limitations ("we all have our limits. you can't do what you can't do. it's not your fault.") and that intersects with her trauma ("i can't do this. i'm not good enough.") in a way that inherently ties her self worth to her ability to be useful and perform a job. as a result, she has a gut reaction to and a resistance to anyone suggesting she might not be capable of something, or that she might need help, and that makes her constantly push herself past her limits, causing real damage. the problem is that hera is disabled, there are things she can't do, and she hasn't been given the security or compassion to really come to terms with that. no amount of ways to manage doing her job will really help the core problem; she needs to be able to separate her concept of self worth from her productivity. "we get things wrong, and we get better." is a nice sentiment, but i think it applies more to interpersonal conflict than physical burnout. hera even directly calls back to and casts doubt on that specific line later in the show.
that's why eiffel matters so much to hera. when eiffel says "you can do anything" - he believes that, he has that kind of sincere faith in all of his friends, but he means it even when it's disproven. he's seen her fail. he's seen her make mistakes. it doesn't matter because it isn't about what he expects of her, it's about who she is to him. minkowski is the commander, even when she's not. hera can do anything, even when she can't. eiffel values people, not their jobs. if hera didn't have a supercomputer for a brain, she would still be the same to him; it's who she is and her companionship that he wants. i'm not saying that what maxwell did for hera was useless - it's effective therapy that gave her a clearer understanding of herself, and a framework to understand what's been happening to her; that's extremely valuable. but that alone would not have been enough. what hera thinks of at the end of memoria, what actually pulls her through, is the support and care that eiffel and minkowski continually show to her.

central-eastern european experience of seeing western tankies assume every critique of communism/ussr must mean you're being in love with capitalism, because in their simplified world of only black or white those are opposites, while your cee history basically forced you into being very capable of understanding nuances of systems, necessity of constantly criticizing them and being well aware of central-eastern europe getting fucked by both communism and capitalism

The truth about Wealth
I need people to spread this around. I'm leading the post with this because I feel it's so important. -
I'm reposting this information here and not in a reply to someone because I think it's something people need to understand about how the rich stay rich and get more rich. If you read through it, I think you'll be as angry as me.
We'll use David Zaslav, the CEO of Warner Discovery, as an example. His salary in 2021 was 3 million. His compensation package was 240 million, including 12 million in dividends. 4.4 million in a monetary bonus, with the majority of the rest in stock options.
Stock options, for those who don't know, are not actual stocks but a guarantee that you can purchase the stock at a pre-set price, the value of it when you got the option. It means that in the future, you can pay the original price but you get the current value.
So while you technically don't "own" that money yet, it's still there. Usually, people will hold on to these until the value of the stock is at a very high rate and then cash in and put that money elsewhere. They can literally double and triple their earnings or more! All this while also avoiding paying taxes on it because until they cash in, it's only speculative money.
But here's the real kicker. The super wealthy don't pay for anything from their actual money. That would involve spending money they own. Instead, they take out low interest bank loans using their wealth as collateral. So they don't have money on hand that they "own" which is money the govt can tax them on, instead they work on "borrowed" money which is considered an expense and can be written off.
So they can keep their money in locations where it's safe from government taxation, but still use it whenever they want while claiming that actually they have no taxable income beyond their deliberately "low" salaries. In the meantime, they're able to accumulate more wealth, simply shifting the money from one nebulous tax-free bunker to another to avoid paying the government.
And don't get confused because "income" and "wealth" are not the same thing, but the vast majority of people in the USA don't realize this because they don't ever have the opportunity to accumulate wealth so they think it's the same thing, but it's not.
Income is what you earn in a year. Wealth is the value of what you own that carries over from year to year. Rich people don't have their millions in the bank, they have it in properties, in stocks, in other things where the money is used to generate more money for them. People like Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos don't have billions of dollars in bank accounts, they keep it in other assets that generate more money from them. The assets of a billionaire are literally so vast that it's virtually impossible to spend money faster than they're making it through passive means.
Bob Iger, the CEO of Disney, gets most of his wealth in these things, that's why talking about salary is useless, because Bob, like most rich assholes, doesn't want money. Money can be taxed at a higher rate. He wants assets.
And that's why it's especially insidious that they try to compare themselves to us, to frame their personal profits as though it's the same as the income that hourly or even salaried workers get. We can understand the concept of earning money. "Earning" money is something that we do in the lower classes. But don't be fooled by them. They don't "EARN" money. They don't work for the vast majority of their money. They don't even USE their own money to pay for their day to day lives.
So any attempt to compare a slash in their oncome to anything they do to our pay is calculatedly false and meant to try and make people who don't know much about wealth sympathize with them. "Oh those poor billionaires, they work for that money" . Except they don't. Their assets generate more wealth and they live off of money borrowed from banks and other entities so they never have to touch their own vast fortunes.
You could literally slash the pay and benefits of people like Bob Iger and David Zaslav down to zero and the assets they already have would still generate millions of dollars on a yearly, or even on a monthly basis. They wouldn't have to change a single thing about how they live.
So don't fall for it. Don't ever fall for their "we're just like you, we'll suffer if we don't keep even more money" bullshit. They're trying to play on our human sense of compassion, when they have none to give us in exchange.
Please, if you found this at all informative, spread it around. I'm not writing these things for personal validation, I'm writing them because I feel education is important for people to understand WHY things are the way they are and to know the real issue
This is the kind of thing that has always been cloaked in vague language so the layperson doesn't understand it. We need to spread this information and make it known to everyone. We need to KNOW the details of what we're fighting in order to win.
