BTS of #RWRBMovie: 'z' in your last name

Clifton Collins Jr., who plays my father in the film, was amazing. I knew of him. I’d seen his projects, but we’d never crossed paths before. And then we met and we just got along, thick as thieves. And he’s like an OG Mexican from Los Angeles which was so colorful. He made it feel like there was family on set. Same with Matthew being Puerto Rican. Their influences help you get into that vibe, and then you do the scene and it’s wonderful. You really bring that accuracy to it.
There’s a line in the film when Alex and Henry are in Paris, and Henry asks him a question about his mom’s campaign, and Alex starts telling him about his father and his abuela coming to the States. The line is something like “If you’re an immigrant in America and you have a ‘Z’ in your last name, there’s a lot of people in positions of power that don’t look and sound like you. I’ve been given the opportunity to be someone in the world that my father didn’t see when he was growing up.”
As someone with two ‘Zs’ in his last name (laughs), that was a tough scene for me because I had to be there as Alex and not as Taylor. It was very emotional to think of my family and what they went through to come to the United States. Even though they came here a long time ago, you still think about all of the people that are coming to America today and about all of their stories.
Alex realizes that his father didn’t have any role models growing up and now he’s a congressman. That fuels his fire to be the change. That was so exciting for me.

For both Zakhar Perez and the director, the character Alex’s biracial identity was particularly meaningful. López grew up in Panama City, Fla., with his Puerto Rican father and Polish Russian mother, while Zakhar Perez is of Mexican, Middle Eastern and Mediterranean descent and was raised in northwest Indiana, where he said there was only one other Mexican family.
“Matthew and I talked a lot about the mestizo journey,” Zakhar Perez said in a video call before SAG-AFTRA, the actor’s union, went on strike. “Being part Mexican, part lots of other things, I don’t want to say you’re forgotten, but in today’s world, it’s like, you’re either this or you’re that. There’s nothing in between. I’m kind of a cultural chameleon.”
“As a young Latiné queer man, I never read something that centered someone like Alex,” López said, echoing his star. “If I had been presented with this character when I was in my late teens, early 20s, it may have changed how I thought about myself.”

ML: It was personal. That was about me and Taylor. It came from a conversation that Taylor and I had when making the film.

Alex has a line about grow ing up in Texas as a kid with a last name that ends with Z, which is I guess something else you can relate to, Florida style.
ML: And Taylor Zakhar Perez also. Taylor and I talked about that scene a lot as being something that we both understood. My aunt Priscilla Lopez is a beloved, beloved stage actor. She was in the original cast of A Chorus Line. And there's a story that she tells about Mandy Gonzalez, who was in In the Heights with her, and Mandy once told Priscilla that Priscilla made it okay for her to be someone with a Z in her last name. And that was a thing that Taylor and I spent a lot of time discussing as well. It was important to me that that scene be in the movie. There was never a chance in hell that that scene was ever getting cut.

There’s a scene in the movie that is very much me, which I gave Taylor after they’ve had sex for the first time. They’re there in pillow talk mode, and he tells Henry about what it’s like to be the son of an immigrant with a Z in your last name. It was really important to me to talk about growing up with a Z in your last name and even just how our names are pronounced, the spellings of our names sometimes if you have Latin ancestry. To have to answer for your name has always been something for me that I struggled with until I stopped struggling with it. So, I needed to put that into Alex’s story and when it came time to shoot that scene again, it was something I didn’t have to explain to Taylor Zakhar Perez. He got it instantly. The only thing that I did screw him up with is like, “We’re going to do this [scene] as a oner, and we’re going to do it as a top shot that starts in a wide shot and comes all the way down to your face, and we’re not going to leave this scene until you get it right in one.”

Marius von Fundshauser’s father died when he was only seven, thrusting him into a position of great wealth, power and influence among the local upper crust at a young age while his grief was still raw. He also attends an incredibly elitist and traditional-sounding boarding school. Between these factors, he likely has a lot of experience with adults wanting to control, manipulate and exploit him.
He is romantically involved with Grenda, albeit mostly long-distance.
Grenda is one of Mabel’s best friends.
On the same night that Marius gets flicked in the nose by his soulmate, Pacifica cements her change of heart and becomes a friend of Dipper and Mabel.
She and Dipper are strongly implied to have potential for romantic involvement.
After Weirdmaggedon, the Northwests have lost a significant amount of money (though relatively still not that much) and their big fancy mansion, and Preston immediately swearing loyalty to Bill out of selfishness and cowardice has probably damaged their reputation in Gravity Falls as well.
Preston and Priscilla are exactly the kind of parents who would take out their anger and bitterness about this, and try to compensate for their loss of some control, by abusing their daughter even more. They will do their best to sabotage her new support system and suppress her growing independence.
But you know who they could never turn away? And would recognize and be able to relate to their treatment of her? The richest rich boy in Richardson Richington’s Rich Boys Richcademy, that’s who!
Conclusion: I need to write a fanfic about these two Pine twins-adjacent rich kids with parental issues and inter-class relationships and their inevitable beautiful friendship.

Characters that had better redemption arcs than Zuko:
Disclaimer; while I do criticise the series I do actually like it overall. There are just some things that don’t sit right with me because of the time the show was made in. While I recognise how revolutionary Zuko’s redemption arc was that does not make it immune to criticism.
The first point we need to address is “what am I measuring “better” by?”. That goes into the issues with Zuko’s redemption arc to begin with. Zuko’s redemption has always felt a little shallow to me. He spends most of the series chasing and trying to capture/kill a 12 year old in the name of colonisation and then has a crisis of faith when he realises that the side he fought for no longer served him. He doesn’t address the toxic mindsets he was raised with, he merely changes sides. how I am determining what characters did better is is they made a conscious change in behaviour and mindset. Lets’ get into it, i’ll try to limit myself to three paragraphs.
1. Li Ping/ The Serpent.-Detentionaire
For the uninitiated, The Serpent. was an antagonist in the latter parts of Detentionaire. The series followed Lee Ping, the son of Korean immigrants as he tries to find the culprit who set him up for a schoolwide prank that got him a year of detention. through the series Ping battles rivals, brainwashing and shadow governments, uncovers family secrets and confronts old family demons.
The Serpent [who i will be calling Li to keep thing brief] was apart of said Shadow Government and Lees older brother. He was raised by the Council as a weapon and he encounters Lee and his friends on quite a few occasions.Li doesn’t have many interests that we know of, we know he’s a bit immature and that he loves his snake Priscilla. When he discovers that he was taken by Council not given up he turns on them, getting captured and giving Lee and his friends time to escape. Ther series was canceled so we never get to see where his story goes.
Li changes his actions because when he realises that his biological family did not abandon him he has no reason to fight them and with the understanding of the lies he was fed he’s done being manipulated.
2. Stanley Pines-Gravity falls
When twins Mabel and Dipper Pines are forced to stay with their Grunkle Stan in the mystery shack, they discover that there is more to this sleepy town and in it’s off colour residents.
So spoiler, Grunkle Stanford Pines was laying about his identity. When Grunkle Stan was younger he had a twin brother, Stanford. Ford was the smart one while Stan was the strong one but they were close until an accident with Fords science project caused a rift between the brothers. they meet up years later as adults and Stan is a con man living paycheck to paycheck and Ford has fallen into the supernatural happenings of the town. A fight causes the portal Ford was building to activate and suck him up. Stanley goes on to assume his brother’s identity and try to find the other journals to rebuild the portal and save his brother.
When we meet him he’s still up to his old tricks and he can be harsh sometimes, but he genuinely loves his niblings. In the end he sacrifices his memories to defeat the ultimate evil. He’s a shady guy by all means, but by the time he saves his brother he has more than redeemed himself.
3. Pacifica Northwest- Gravity Falls
In the beginning Pacifica is a bit of a one dimensional bully, she is as Dipper says ‘the worst”. As we see her more however he has a miniature redemption arc. We realise that her parents are controlling and abusive and she genuinely does not know better. During the Northwests ball her house is being haunted by a vengeful ghost that pertifies everyone. Pacifica learns that her family is not that great and decides to break the cycle and let the undesirables in. This frees the ghost and saves everyone.
While Pacifica is a minor character her redemption is set up and gradual and shown in a way that does not obstruct the overall narrative. her redemption is earned through addressing the abuse she suffered and changing her behaviour, even she she cannot change the behaviour of others, she’s only a kid after all.
4. Catra-SPOP
Spop follows child soldiers and childhood friends, Catra and Adora and their pains and adventures on both sides as they make their way back to each other.
Catra is a villian for most of the series. Because we benefit from her direct perspective her abuse under Shadow Weaver, Hordak and Horde Prime is well documented an ongoing and, in her mind, unescapable. Catra does show vulnerability despite this on multiple occasions and it’s usually unaddressed or punished, this creates a cycle of her pushing people away to keep herself safe.When she sets off the portal she doesn’t have any real idea of what will happen, she just knows there’s a chance she’ll also dies and that doesn’t sound too bad. She finally snaps out of it and saves Glimmer from Horde Prime, sacrificing herself to a fate worse than death in the process. Over the rest of season five hse gets closer to the Best friend squad and apologises even saving the world by letting love in.
Catra learns that it is by letting yourself be loved that you become worthy of it. While her actions with the Horde are not good, she knows that. Much like Pacifica, she just does not know a better life or rather feel she deserves one. Catra is only accepted when she proves she has changed beyond a doubt. the choices she makes throughout the series that show the glimmer [hehe]that she might be better underneath come from her. No one makes her give Adora the sword back, no one makes her toast Scorpia in the Crimson Wastes, no one makes her get Glimmer off the ship, no one but her.
5. Amity Blight
When Luz Noceda ends up on the Boiling Isles she meets a cast of characters, among them is Amity Blight. the youngest daughter of the Blight family, abomination prodigy and self important snob. We first meet her bullying Willow Park. When Lux aggress to help Willow cheat Amity calls her out on it, while a bit heavy handed in approach she’s not wrong. They meet again at the convention where she challenges Luz to a witches duel. cue Lilith cheating and the girls bonding a little.
Amity’s actions don’t go far from the realm of petty bullying but as season 1 goes on she starts to gain more depth. Controlling parents, self esteem issues and a surprising gift with kids. She and Luz start to for a mutual friendship and then Amity enters her tomato era. She stands up to her mother and apologises to Willow, they make peace and become friends again.
Amity becomes a better person, which isn’t unrealistic, she’s a kid who unlearns toxic mindsets though finding someone able to see more than the top student. her better qualities come out and she leaves her old friends. It looks like Skara also abandons Boscha, so good for her to.

An idea for a one-shot in Gravity Falls. Following the Northwest’s party Candy, Mabel and Grenda sneak up to check out Pacifica’s room. They want to see the glamour she lives in and the luxuries they can only be afforded to one so rich. But when they hear footsteps approaching the door they hide in a closet to avoid detection.
In walks Priscilla, Preston and Pacifica. Because the bells conditioning has clearly warn off it has to be reinforced. As Preston rings the bell Priscilla spanks Pacifica. The girls are left watching until Pacifica’s parents leave, and only dare to move once Pacifica cries herself to sleep.
Mabel, Candy and Grenda leave and have to tackle serious questions no should should have to face. Why do parents abuse there child. How does it affect the kid. What does being rich offer when love from a parent is unconditional and the only thing that they care about are appearances. And what is their responsibility as witness to the abuse.

Your question also reminded me to ask you: have your OC kids met Pacifica's parents?
The kids have met the Northwests, and know about them, but they don't have any real meaningful relationship with their maternal grandparents. Every now and then, Preston and/or Priscilla might try to get through to their grandkids by sending impressive Christmas or birthday presents, and while Pacifica doesn't ever forbid her parents from seeing her kids (if Dipper got his way, she would, but Dipper's feud with Preston is both common knowledge and reasonably petty by this point), however she also doesn't try to include them in her life at all, and any kind of contact is pretty awkward.

elaboration on another au while i work on some stuff for the celestial one (and also a fic au i really need to get that done soon)
i mentioned an au where ford is an interdimensional somewhat radioactive owl and seagull wizard
it’s now spiraled out of control and become an actual au so let’s talk about it (this one is less story-driven than the celestial au, but there is still a lot going on)
so something relatively important to get out of the way first. these are not your typical wizards. these are wizards combined with ideas pulled from various other things. so expect some overlap in concepts
in this au, all of the pines family (as well as all of gravity falls’ inhabitants) are wizards. each person is associated with at least one animal and one neat interest and/or skill. some examples:
-ford gets an owl, a seagull, and oddities, stan gets an opossum, a seagull, and transmutation
-dipper gets a deer and investigation, mabel gets a pig and art (you cannot convince me that sewing and knitting and crocheting aren’t art forms)
-fiddleford gets a hog, a raccoon, and engineering
the animals are essentially familiars. the first is generally inherited, gifted, or found. the second familiar is created by the wizard. they live as long as their friend does (it is not unheard of for a familiar to disappear if they don’t like their wizard. this is why preston and priscilla northwest, as well as bud gleeful, do not have familiars. they used to)
ford and stan got their first familiars via a fourth method that no one knew could actually happen at the time. that being that the familiars found them. these were the seagulls. the owl and the opossum were both created during times of high stress and, as such, are both sources of comfort for the duo
mabel was technically gifted waddles, but she considers him a find. dipper found his deer
soos got a rare case of having two gifted familiars (it’s currently unknown if he would be able to create a third one because of this). the first was a lizard gifted by his abuelita after his birthday gone wrong, the second was a goat gifted by stan
the story of this au primarily focuses around ford and mabel because if canon won’t give us sweater twins i will simply make them myself
see, ford has a problem. one of his familiars also has the same problem. i can’t really get into what exactly that is right now because i’m still considering writing this. mabel gets to know about the problem before anyone else does (this hinges on a headcanon i have which i’ll put in a separate post) and promises not to tell stan or dipper on one condition: she gets to accompany him in looking for a solution. he agrees to let her come along and so the real story begins
this post is getting a little long, so i’ll leave it there. as a final note- i do have a mental list of probably too many characters and what their familiars and interests/skills are (including future familiars :]). if you’re curious about a certain character don’t be afraid to ask about them (i might even have some extra story info about them)
