The Young Elites (The Young Elites, #1)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Book Review: The Young Elites by Marie Lu
Rating: ✰ ✰ ✰ ✰ ✰ (4.7)
The following review is spoiler free.
Review: As a HUGE fan of the Legend series, I thought I would investigate Marie Lu’s other ya novels to see how they compare. I was not expecting to completely fall head over heels for another series. Legend is a dystopian novel, which differs greatly from the fantastical world captured in The Young Elites, but the writing is absolutely beautiful. No matter what genre, Marie Lu is able to work her magic and create an addicting storyline.
What Worked:
01. The main character. I was absolutely blown away by Lu’s main character Adelina Amouteru. She’s an incredibly dark, passionate, bitter, and ruthless antihero who will do anything it takes to get revenge on those who have wronged her. She is the opposite of perfect and that’s something that I truly appreciate about her. Rather than take the time to establish how beautiful Adelina is as a character, Lu focuses on Adelina’s flaws. Stricken by the plague, Adelina lost an eye to infection, making her extremely self conscious about her scars. She suffers abuse from a father who makes her feel unloved and worthless. Her fears are exposed to the reader, appearing in the form of nightmares. The weight of her own guilt is on full display throughout the whole book, as Adelina tries to cope with the darkness lurking within her conscience. Adelina is truly a strong, independent female who is not afraid to get dirty with her hands. She is also in no way a hero. It was a thrilling experience to be able to look through the eyes of a very dark, flawed individual who I may even consider to be a villain. Though I do not share many of Adelina’s viewpoints and certainly don’t condone her violent behavior, I couldn’t help but root her on as she carried out her revenge plan.
02.  The platonic relationship between Adeline and Raffaele. It was refreshing to read a story including a friendship between a male and female character without the complexities of romance. Raffaele is described as beautiful, which goes hand in hand with his ability to soothe the soul. Despite his beauty, Adelina did not sway or fall madly in love with him. Instead, she was invested in developing a platonic relationship that she could fall back on.
03. The villain. I really liked Lu’s idea of incorporating the perspective of Teren, the story’s antagonist, every few chapters. Though his point of view was written in the third person, I was given a lot of insight as to why Teren behaves the way he does. He is incredibly complex and I admire that. His past is shrouded in darkness. As readers, we learn through Enzo that Teren was mistreated by his father. A lot of pressure was placed upon his shoulders as the individual next in line for the Lead Inquisitor role. When Teren was infected by the blood fever, he believed the unique abilities he was gifted made him an abomination. Teren’s past is only mentioned from the perspectives of other characters, making things all the more mysterious. I hope that in upcoming books, we can learn more about Teren and his cruel ways.
04. The setting in which the story takes place. I found Marie Lu’s Renaissance type world to be very interesting! From the tales of the gods and their role in the realm to the Fortunata Court and clothing such as Tamouran head wraps, I relished in the world created by Lu. I really was taken aback by the beautiful imagery and description. Each character was unique and distinct in my mind. Adelina’s illusions were described such an artful way, that I felt as if I could possess her power myself. I couldn’t stop imagining the strings Adelina tugged on to conjure her illusions.
05. The character development. Many of the character’s in The Young Elites are very complex. It is hard to view them at a surface level, as Marie Lu goes into so much depth when painting each character’s history on the page. No one is fully innocent. I don’t want to dive too much into it in fear of potentially spoiling the contents of the book, but I will say that there are no hands that are clean.
06. The diversity. I am very pleased by the diversity within this book. Characters of all different ethnicities, skin tones, genders, and sexualities appear front and center. I applaud Lu for her inclusivity.
07. The romance. Something I really loved about the Legend series was the romance between June and Day. It was a ship I could get behind. I almost always look for books with a little bit of romance, because romance makes things interesting. I was expecting a huge ship readers were rooting for in this book. To my surprise, there actually wasn’t much romance in this book. Even more surprising, I didn’t seem to mind. I was too invested in Adelina’s relationship with the darkness inside of her. I actually enjoyed focusing more on Adelina and her thirst for revenge.
08. The ending. Something that really had me itching to get my hands on the next book was Lu’s method of introducing a new character in the last chapter. It is written in the third person from princess Maeve’s perspective, who hails from Beldain. Including Maeve’s perspective deepened my curiosity. I cannot wait to see her role in the next installment!
What Didn’t Work:
01.  The world-building. Something I would have liked to explore more is the blood fever. It is referenced only at the beginning of the book when Adelina is reminiscing on her tales of woe. We learn that when adults fall ill to the fever, they die, whilst children survive with scarring, some emerging with special abilities. I wanted to know more about the cause of the fever, the symptoms, where it may have come from. Another thing I noticed is that I relied heavily on the map at the front of the novel. Every time a new city was mentioned, I found myself thumbing back to the beginning because I had no idea where it was placed. The only two places I was familiar with were Dalia and Estonia. I would have liked perhaps more description regarding the differentiation between cities within Kenettra.
02. Some of the perspectives. Adelina’s point-of-view was the only one written in the first person. While I certainly see why Lu chose to do this, I wish we could get more of a glimpse of Enzo, Teren, and Raffaele’s thoughts. Each chapter written from their perspective lasted only a mere two or three pages in comparison to Adelina’s twenty page chapters. I would have liked to see more from them, though I must admit the small snippets of their lives made me curious about their characters.

She was never visited. Not that she expected them otherwise. They had all betrayed her in the end. Her brother. Mai. Ty Lee. Her father. Her friends had chosen her brother, just like her mother did. For all that was worth, and thinking positive, Azula was sure that, even if they did want to go, she wouldn’t have wanted them to see her like that.
The first few days, she barely had any sleep. She couldn’t. Her room there was too lit. They wanted to keep an eye on her, for obvious reasons. It wasn’t easy to fall asleep when you were tied to the bed, either. Soon enough there was a purple shadow under her eyes, disgracing and mocking her, and a redness to her nose. Her normally graceful demeanor was gone. How come she could preserve it when her entire life had turned upside down? A trail of dried blood surrounding her otherwise lovely lips served as a reminder of what was done to her.
“It’s all for your own good, Azula,” said one of her nurses, securing whatever it was that kept her tied to the bed. She wanted to note that a “Princess” was lacking, but the medicine was strong, as much as her eyelids. Princess Azula had had enough of fighting already. Surrender was new, and although it was completely uncomfortable, she had no other option.
The sooner she accepted it, the better.
“Your brother is doing the right thing looking out for you.”
Azula would have snapped if she had the strength to do so. The nurse’s words angered to no end. However, there was no fire left to run through her veins. No words to use against her. No knives nor weapons. No respect to her name. She could only stare as she let her do her work. She even hummed softly at herself, as if Azula wasn’t there. As if she didn’t matter. At the back of her head, she could still smell smoke – could still feel the bitter cold. The war had ended. Azula had lost. Azula had lost, and she must pay for what she did.
It was on her third month there that someone came expecting to see her.
“Well, aren’t you gonna ask me who that is?” asked her nurse, in a cheerful tone that almost made Azula gag. No matter how excited she might’ve felt – she was afraid of hoping for too much. Still, her heart beat fast, and she almost felt the ghost of a smile creeping to her lips.
“We must get you all pretty, don’t you think? It’s not every day you’ve got any visitors,” she said, slowly helping her sit. “Let alone, male.”
Zuko.
It had to be him.
The prospect almost made her cry. Azula could’ve sworn she felt her breath hitching, and a broken sigh escaped her lips before she could prevent it.  She did as she was told, letting the nurses put her hair in a tight bun. A light adorning her face.
But it was all for nothing.
Her hope fell down as soon as she saw a stranger on the other side of the room, carrying scrolls.
“I’m expecting to talk to the princess alone,” he said, and the nurses offered a small nod and left.
Azula let her shoulders fall, and bit hard at her lips.
“Who are you?” she said, and her own voice sounded coarse and harsh – dried in a way. Words stumbled, foreign to her tongue. It had been so long since she last spoke.
“Is it safe?” the man asked, looking at his surroundings. He had a wary look on his face, mixed with something Azula couldn’t quite place. It seemed like disgust. Or revulsion, but she couldn’t say for sure. He did seem uncomfortable. And stiff. So stiff he reminded her of the war.
“I asked you a question,” she said, closing her eyes. She needed not to think about it. There was no use in it. If ever, it only left her with enough self-hatred to attempt to do something she wouldn’t regret. For now, she wanted to hear whatever it was the stranger wanted. And she wanted to hear it right away.
If he hadn’t bothered in a greeting, it must have been important.
Or it could be that nobody thought of her as a person anymore. Azula didn’t want to dwell too much on that.
“So did I,” was his response. Cold, calculated. A man who had some power, Azula finally decided.
She glared at him, and if looks could kill…
“I’m here to talk about your oncoming trial.”
“My oncoming trial? I didn’t know I was having one,” she said, and there was humor in her voice. A sharpness attached to it, too.
“Firelord Zuko—”
“Why isn’t he here?” she shot, her chin up and proud. If he cared, he would have visited. If he cared, he wouldn’t have sent someone to deal with her.
(She almost thanked him for that. For not caring. For choosing himself over her. for doing the right thing. For not letting his emotions cloud him – but she didn’t. She missed him too much for that. She had always been selfish, anyway).
“He sent me, your Highness,” the man finally explained with a bow. “I’m your lawyer.”
“I didn’t hire you.”
“Your brother, our Firelord, did.”
“Well, I don’t want you,” she said with a shrug.
“That doesn’t concern you,” he said, not missing a beat.
“If my trail is the one that’s—”
“No offense, princess, but there’s not much you can do. It is already settled,” he said, not bothering to look at her. “Now, let me explain myself.”
“By all means, do. I’m dying to listen,” she replied, and her words were as biting as she could manage.
“I’m your lawyer, princess. Your brother took the effort to hire the most capable man for the task.”
“Now, that’s new.” Zuko cared enough for her not to go to prison, but not enough to go visit her. It didn’t surprise her. In fact, she believed he was only doing this –hiring lawyers and all – so he didn’t have to deal with the shame of having relatives in prison. It wouldn’t do well to his reputation. His image would be tainted.
The realization hurt, as much as realizing she was really all alone.
“And I will do my job, whether you like it or not. But I need you to cooperate,” the man finished, looking for her eyes. She kept her head low and shook it softly.
“Well, I don’t want to.”
“I’m afraid you’re not understanding me, princess.”
He had the nerve to talk to her like that! And she couldn’t do anything to prevent him. She had only her tongue.  “Which part do you think I’m not understanding?” she asked, raising an eyebrow.
“You could go to prison for your crimes,” he spoke as if he was talking to a child.
He was, but Azula was offended anyway.
“And where exactly am I, sir?” she asked, a bitter smile resembling a growl on her lips. “I don’t care. Here, there. It’s all the same.” A gilded jail. A golden cage. She was still trapped.
“You don’t know what you’re saying. You’re lucky you’re here and not in some filthy cell.”
“Oh, I beg your pardon!” she sneered. “Didn’t realize I had to thank my extremely generous brother for this!”
Azula had lost. And she wasn’t even granted the honor that came with death.
“It could be worse.”
“No, it can’t.”
She went to trial. The room was full of people that had a lot to say about her. In more than one occasion, her eyes were filled with tears, and she had to bite her lips. One gets used to horror once you learn to ignore it. Azula never expected it to get back to her later.  She didn’t expect the pain that came with it.
As instructed, she said she hadn’t meant to. She said she was forced. That her father never loved her, but use her nonetheless.
Azula always lied. A small voice on her mind told her so, in a vain attempt at making her feel better. Perhaps what she was most afraid of was a lack of regrets. A fear of accepting that, indeed, her father never loved her. That she had been nothing but a war machine. A weapon he craved himself. A child. A child. A child!
But how could she feel regret, when her triumphs made her father smile at her? when her conquests gave him pride? When pride and love were deeply tied when it came to Ozai? She had felt it was worth it, for it made her father happy. And when Father was happy, he loved his dearest child. How could she regret it, when he had treated her like she was the best thing to ever grace Earth? Sure, he had his moments, but…
She was crying, ugly sobs shaking her body. They weren’t understanding. They weren’t understanding anything at all! Under thick tears, she saw her brother’s lower lip tremble, as she kept talking. Why was he crying? He, of all people, should have understood! He, who knew how father was! Surely he couldn’t think of him as a monster. Right, Zuzu?
But…
She was declared mentally unstable. They said she was abused, and she bit down a humorless laugh. No, no. They weren’t understanding. Her father had loved her. Her father had loved her! Her father had loved her because she did everything in her power to deserve it!
It never crossed to her mind that a child didn’t need to do anything to be deserving of love.
It never crossed to her mind that scars do not always look like the one in Zuko’s face.

February #ChallengeYourShelf Day 12: Review
About Restless Beauty:
Things could be better for Princess Briony. She’s woken up in a wedding dress (again) only to find the capital city covered in thorns, everyone asleep—and no prince. After a daring escape (and getting robbed), Briony sets off to find what life holds for her. Along the way, she meets Ella, a runaway servant girl with a knack for billiards, Rapunzel, an inventor who’s spent her whole life locked in a tower, and Fortunata, once a proud mermaid and now the star of a traveling freak show. This unlikely group of heroines sets off on a quest of personal satisfaction now that the rules have changed. But they’re not the only ones not sleeping in the kingdom of Sturrybucque. In the absence of the king and queen, some of the lords have become more corrupt and have a good chance of ruining everything. Some of the laws of magic still apply, and Briony must either find true love’s kiss or kill the faerie who originally cursed her family. Otherwise, the rest of the royal family—along with all of Sturrybucque City—will sleep forever.
Buy a copy here!
Listen, I am a sucker for fairy tale retellings (and I especially love the use of “fractured fairy tale” which I haven’t heard/used since I taught). While there were some faults, which I will expand upon, the things I loved about this book far outweighed them.
By far the best part of this book was the characters; as usual, I absolutely fell in love with Rapunzel. I think it’s time to accept that Rapunzel is my favorite princess of all time, finally replacing Belle/Beauty. The humor is on point and the pacing and action sequences had me on the edge of my seat. I love having four very different women working together in the Coalition of Self-Rescuing Princesses. The romances made me squee, especially Rapunzel and (spoiler) and the princesses all came from vastly different backgrounds. The inclusion of lots of fairy tales was a nice change of pace (Sleeping Beauty/Rapunzel/Little Mermaid/Cinderella/Beauty and the Beast/Hansel & Gretel to name a few) and they all tied together without feeling forced; you could absolutely believe in a gingerbread house maintained by witches among a magical kingdom with fairy godmothers and mermaids. This book seriously left me feeling happy and light hearted and that’s why I can’t be super critical of it and why the things that bothered me about it do not seriously detract from the overall star ratings.
Now for the part I don’t like, criticism.
Restless Beauty is a self published novel and there were a few places where it could have used the touch of an editor, where dialogue or descriptions took me out of the story - the instance that sticks in my mind is over the word “said.” There was a series of dialogue and after every speaking line was either “said + adverb” or a synonym for “said,” even though it was fairly obvious how the characters were talking based on the action going on. Some plot points were predictable, although I felt the “twist” came out of the blue, with little to no warning that a certain character was so important. And, as much as I love romance and happily ever after, I would have loved to see a character who didn’t fall in love at one point or another. These things might turn other readers off of the book, but again, the characters, humor, and charm all made up for it for me.
This book is great for people looking for a cute fairy tale relling with humor and bad-ass princesses ready to save themselves. I highly recommend it and would readily read any sequels. I hope we’ll see more of Sturrybucque in the future!

Maranao royal insists PRRD has Maranao blood
#PHnews: Maranao royal insists PRRD has Maranao blood
COTABATO CITY -- A member of the Maranao royalty sought to disprove Monday a book that casts doubts on President Rodrigo Duterte’s bloodline, by hinting that the President does not have Maranao blood through his grand maternal lineage. Saidamen B. Pangarungan, a former Lanao del Sur governor and now head of the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF),  refuted the allegation of Earl Parreño in his book “Decoding Duterte: Facts behind Rody’s claims, rise to power.” "Such claim was “unfounded if not conjectural,” Pangarungan said in a statement. Parreño did not categorically state in his 227-page book that Duterte has no Maranao roots but hinted to the readers that the first Mindanaoan president has no Muslim blood -- specifically Maranao blood. The book was featured in an online news network and a national daily, drawing mixed reactions from several quarters. In a Facebook post titled “PRRD: The Maranao Pride,” the NCMF secretary cited literatures written by Professors Ben J. Kadil, Asangan T. Madale and Helen O. Kadil that traced in the Bangsamoro "salsila" (genealogy) the President’s lineage to “his great ancestor Datu Samporna, a Maranao nobleman of Momungan (now Baloi, Lanao del Norte).” Pangarungan said the three professors narrated that at age 21, Datu Samporna went to Iligan and sailed towards “Cagaayahan” (now Cagayan de Oro City). It was in “Cagaayahan” that Samporna raised his family in 1622. Pangarungan said Samporna “replaced Datu Salangsang, as the new ruler of Cagaayahan (and) was offered marriages to princesses -- daughters of prominent families -- and begot generations of prominent descendants in Mindanao and the Visayas, namely Neri, Roa, Fernandez, Chavez, Velez, Rivera, Bautista, San Jose, Rodriguez, Gaerlan, Emano, Pelaez, Fernan, Badelles and Cabili, among others.” Pangarungan said when the Spaniards arrived in the 17th century and when Recoletos missionary priest Fr. Pedro de Santa Barbara officiated mass, many of the Samporna families were Christianized and were given name “Neri.” “However, some of Samporna’s descendants moved to Boroon, Wato, Tugaya, and Ganassi in Lanao and retained their Islamic faith,” he added. Panganrungan said the Spaniards eventually translated “Cagaayahan” into Cagayan de Oro. The three professors claimed that Eleno Samporna Neri Roa got married to Fortunata Gonzales and begot Soledad "Soleng" Samporna Neri Roa, a public school teacher, and civic leader. They said, “Soledad got married to Vicente Duterte, then governor of Davao province, and they were blessed with five children bearing the surname Roa Duterte: Eleanor, Jocelyn, Don, Benjamin, and Rodrigo.” In his book, Parreño questioned the President’s Maranao ancestry by alleging that his maternal grandfather Eleno had his surname Fernandez changed to Roa when he was adopted by the latter's family. But Pangarungan stressed it was contrary to the Maranao "salsila" [genealogy]. Pangarungan insisted that the Maranao salsila recorded that Eleno’s mother was a Roa and Eleno chose his mother’s surname since the name Roa was prominent in trade and influence in Agusan and Misamis provinces. “Assuming for the sake of argument that the name change is true, the Fernandez of Cagayan de Oro are also descendants of Samporna. Thus, whether Eleno is a Fernandez or a Roa, the Maranao blood ran in his veins," Pangarungan said. He said that more than the genealogy, "President Duterte has shown his love and compassion not only for the Maranaos but for the whole Bangsamoro." The NCMF chief noted that the Dutertes (Rody and Sara), have always made sure that there are Davao City deputy mayors to represent Maranaos, Tausugs, Maguindanaons and other Muslim tribes. Pangarungan pointed out that under the Dutertes’ administration, Davao City regularly celebrates the two Muslim holidays of Eid’l Fitr and Eid’l Adha, during which they gave a sack of rice and groceries to all Muslim households in the city, an indication Moro blood is in his veins. The NCMF chief said even before he became President, Duterte has repeatedly told him that he will address the historical injustices against Moros in Mindanao. Because of that, Pangarungan said, he campaigned for Duterte and in Lanao provinces, winning by landslide margins although most of the town mayors were for Mar Roxas of the Liberal Party. (PNA)
