ED - E; Fallout: New Vegas; Design and embroidery by me, 2022
Tumblr media
[Image Description: An embroidery of ED-E from Fallout: New Vegas, who is a circular, floating robot. He faces to the viewer’s left and has a red license plate covering part of his side. He is gray in color and has a sort of grill covering much of his front. There are many antennae poking out behind him; he has what looks like a small satellite dish above the grill, and a small flamethrower below it.
A cut off banner appears above and below him, with words reading “ED-E: <Happy” and on the lower banner, “beeping>”. Around him there are pale green vines with yellow flowers, a prickly pear cactus that has red fruit, and a broc flower stalk that has orange flowers and dark green leaves. End Description]
Thank to @beaniebabycow for the ID!

It has become an annual tradition for me to help Antonia put together her farmer's market booth, where she sells all of the fruits, vegetables, and homemade goods that her family's community farm has produced over the past year. Every year, the harvest brings more and more goods. But this autumn, she has outgrown the farmer's market, and is now selling at a roadside stand!
Tumblr media
Antonia is ten years old in 1978, when she is inspired by the American Indian Movement to help establish a community farm on land her family owns. It's been a huge success. It has strengthened bonds between friends and neighbors as they all care for each other and make sure that nobody goes hungry.
Tumblr media
Whatever is left over after everyone is fed, is then sold at the roadside stand. Antonia is also supplementing with a few special handmade extras that help bring in a little more money. The money will help pay for everything needed to help Snow Mountain Farm grow bigger and better.
Tumblr media
Antonia is so proud of what the fields and orchards have grown.
Tumblr media
Just look at the size of some of these pumpkins!
Under the cut, Antonia will give you an up-close look at what she's selling....
Everything seen here was either made by me, harvested from the wild, or purchased. (See if you can guess which ones were handmade/bought/gathered!)
Tumblr media
The gourd and squash harvest was abundant this year. Antonia managed to coax the garden into producing a few giant pumpkins.
Tumblr media
Lots of other fruits thrived as well!
Tumblr media
Pears are new this year.
Tumblr media
Beautiful pink plums are also new.
Tumblr media
Apples are a returning favorite. There are three varieties this year: sweet yellow apples, tart green apples, and a red striped variety that has its own unique flavor.
Tumblr media
In the front row are apples, plums, chiles, and pears. On the shelf there are fresh flowers and packaged seeds, various fruit jams, honey, apple cider, dried ground herbs, potted herb seedlings, packaged seeds, and bottles of apple cider.
Tumblr media
Up on the shelf there are several varieties of jam: rose petal, peach, grape, prickly pear, and strawberry. Next to them is honey that the farm's bees made from the local wildflowers. The apple cider is made from apples grown in the farm's orchard.
Tumblr media
One particular farmer is very gifted in the art of raising flowers. Here you can buy fresh cut flowers, or seedlings for your own garden.
Tumblr media
Fruit and vegetable seedlings or seeds are also for sale.
Tumblr media
On the checkout counter, Antonia is selling popcorn and apple cider donuts. Directly below the donuts are cartons of eggs, which include white, brown, and speckled eggs.
Tumblr media
Below the checkout counter is the small shelf offering some smaller items. In the plastic bags are freshly made tamales, which are like dumplings of meat, veggies, beans, or cheese mixed with a corn dough and steamed inside corn husks. To the right are two wheels of goat's milk cheese. In the middle are skeins of yarn dyed with natural sources, like prickly pear fruits and cabbage leaves. Next to those are bars of soap, in sagebrush or rose petal scent. And on the right end of the shelf are bagged pine nuts, gathered from the wild.
Below that is more produce! On the left, colored corn. In the crates there are potatoes, cherries, strawberries, tomatoes, peaches, and cauliflower.
Tumblr media
Antonia is especially proud of the fancy colored corn she has grown. It's fun to open the ears and see what colors the kernels are!
Next to that are giant sunflowers. Above that are the pretty gourds and squashes.
Tumblr media
On the bench are some lovely watermelons. And surrounding those are even more pumpkins and squash!
Tumblr media
These, too, emerged in all sorts of different colors and shapes. Antonia lets the different varieties cross pollinate, so that the appearances of the resulting pumpkins are a surprise.
Tumblr media
Thanks for stopping by! Here, take a sunflower home with you!

Flashfics 1 Masterpost!
Ship, Color, Plant
Original Post CLOSED
As you can see, I asked for:
-A Danny + DC ship (/ or &) which is self explanatory.
-A color from the rainbow (roygbiv). Before anyone picked I assigned a topic to each color based on something that color evoked for me! I'm not going to lie, I didn't think too hard on these lol.
Red- fighting
Orange - trick or treat
Yellow - food/meal
Green - eldritch
Blue - sleep(y)
Indigo - smooches/cuddles
Violet - angst (violent violet)
(For those curious: 1R, 3O, 1Y, 2G, 4B, 1I, 4V)
-A plant of some type. The plant is a little vague, but it was there to provide a hook of some sort- a mood or color palette or texture. Basically the plant is the vibe!
(If anyone else wants to use this idea process (or parts of it) to do prompts themselves, feel free!)
Goal was to stay short and quick with these! Here are all the links and a bit of my thought process under the cut! The reasoning is likely spoilery for the pieces, so you might want to read the ficlet first!
Danny/Jason, Indigo, False Indigo
Danny/Jason, Yellow, Dandelions
Smooch + False Indigo just had to be fake dating! It was a must. I admittedly have more thoughts on this one than a ficlet warrants...
Danny/Tim, Violet, Iris
Food/Meal. Dandelions are seen as just weeds in the US, but actually from their roots to leaves to flowers have a ton of uses! So I wanted there to be a restaurant that was dubious from the outside, but had amazing food.
Danny & Billy Batson, Orange, Prickly Pear
Angst. I love irises. The colors of traditional purple iris with that spot of yellow reminds me of dusk. Dusk feels like an ending so we went with a dramatic deadline!
Danny/Bruce, Blue, Blue Lily
Trick or Treat. Danny brings Billy food as they plot. For the plant a prickly pear is good eating, but... well, prickly, so I went with a clear friendship with some underlying contentiousness.
Danny & Steph Brown, Violet, Violets
Sleepy. A blue lily looks a little scattered, even frayed, but it still has a lovely soft color. It was perfect for a Bruce who's trying to hard and a soft moment. (Great fun to finally write this ship.)
Danny & Arthur Curry (Aquaman, Orin), Blue, Ruby Slipper Succulent
Angst. Purple bruises clustered together like violet flowers came to mind right away- especially for violent violets. Two spirited heroes in over their heads...
Danny/Jason, Orange, Apricot Tree
Sleepy- went with exhausted here. The succulents reminded me both of the crown of fire but also coral, so I really wanted to focus on Danny visiting Arthur/Orin. As both half human kings, I thought that it could be nice to set up a mentor idea.
Danny/Stephanie, Violet, Orchids
Trick or Treat. I struggled a bit at first but had the idea of Danny throwing apricots at Danny- using the plant literally for once! Luckily the ficlet found it's way. (Ty Moku for letting me bounce ideas off of you.)
Danny/Duke, Blue, Sage
Angst that I had to make different from the other angst with these two! I leaned into the other worldliness of orchids and their bright bold colors... and what that could mean as a ghost.
Danny/Zatanna, Orange, Amaryllis Belladonna
Sleep. Sage is nice and fuzzy so first take away was the texture, but it's also an herb and so we got to sick fic! Just a soft little moment for these two and a little gator.
Danny (Phantom) & Captain Marvel, Green, Wildflowers
Trick or treat. Well, I had to do a magic show with that topic. The flowers are very soft so wanted something sappy. But with the name belladonna, even if it's not those belladonnas, had to have tiny bit of a threat or mystery.
Danny/Jason, Red, Bonsai
Eldritch. Wildflowers made me think of an uncontrollable Phantom and what would cause that and, well, look I know this isn't the angst color but... combined with the prompter very specifically using Phantom and Capetian Marvel it seemed to fit.
Danny/Jason, Blue, Sunflowers
Fight! I was first thinking of a mistaken identity brawl, but that didn't fit bonsai at all. Then I thought it needed to be delicate, but if you've ever watched a master work with bonsai, they are anything but delicate. So then we got to this metaphor!
Danny/Bart, Green, Dahlia
Sleepy. Gonna be honest here, sunflowers = sun was where my brain went right away lol. I also wanted an overall happy and playful feel!
Eldritch. Dahlia are the orbs of flowers that are fractal so a biblically accurate Danny seemed like a place to go! I like to think thanks to time travel Bart and Danny had different first meetings with each other, and none of it in the current time.
Danny/Jason, Violet, Forget-me-not
Angst. How could I not do a death scene with for forget-me-nots? Moku and I had chatted more about the apricot one, and Danny visiting the grave, so I felt this had to tie into that! At least this way you all know it has a happy end?

Red dead gang + flowers, part two :)
Javier Escuella - Calochortus venustus; Red mariposa lily, a native to the deserts of southern California, it’s a stunning yet diminutive lily that blooms with the spring rains. Its striking petal markings and sharp sepals give it a unique flair that makes this little flower an absolute show stopper.
Tumblr media
Sadie Adler - Lupinus arboreus; Yellow lupine, a coastal dwelling perennial shrub, its bright yellow stalks can be seen from February to July along the  Pacific coast. This flower is typically symbolic of voraciousness, resilience, and recovery from trauma.
Tumblr media
Micah Bell - Aconitum columbianum; Monkshood, an annual herb that grows in mountainous regions of the western US. One of the most toxic plants in north America, monkshood was used by settlers as poison for rats. It was also given in bouquets as a warning or a threat that symbolized treachery.
Tumblr media
Karen Jones - Hibiscus schizopetalus; Spider hibiscus, a plant native to tropical east Africa, this wild looking flower is cultivated as an ornamental in greenhouses around the world. Its fiery looking petals and dangling pistil give this flower an intense look unique to this species.
Tumblr media
Kieran Duffy - Aesculus hippocastanum; Horse chestnut, a southern european native closely related to the American chestnut, this tree is a favorite of bonsai artists and ornamental tree nurseries. Its flower spikes produce 1-3 large inedible seeds (”horse chestnuts”) every summer and autumn.
Tumblr media
Lenny Summers - Gazania linearis; Treasure flower, native to south Africa and naturalized in the US, this showy orange flower in the Aster family is a drought tolerant plant that is widely cultivated for its beautiful color and ease of hybridization. Given as a gift, it symbolizes riches and and good luck. (I am ignoring the fact that Lenny attains neither of these)
Tumblr media
Simon Pearson - Salvia leucophylla; Purple sage, another Pacific coast native with aromatic leaves and light purple flowers. It spreads readily by rhizome and thrives in harsh seaside conditions, making it an optimal choice for stabilizing cliffsides and windswept inlets. It has allelopathic qualities that inhibit the growth of other competing seedlings as well as the growth of certain bacteria and fungi.
Tumblr media
John Marston - Opuntia ficus-indica; Barbary fig, a hybrid species of prickly pear cactus widely cultivated as a food crop in arid countries around the world. It thrives in full sun, deep sandy soil, and hot temperatures. In native habitats, it’s mainly pollinated by moths and hummingbirds to produce a sweet, strawberry/fig tasting fruit that can be cooked, eaten raw, or fermented into alcoholic drinks. One of the quintessential western cacti, I couldn’t resist pairing it with our favorite ol’ cowboy.
Tumblr media
Susan Grimshaw - Silybum marianum; Milk thistle, a prickly plant with a readily adaptive growth habit, this flower is sometimes cultivated for its seeds or made into a tea for treating various ailments. Traditionally, the thistle symbolizes devotion, bravery, strength, and resilience.
Tumblr media
That’s all I got for now :) lemme know if you guys have other flower ideas for these guys, I love mashing my two favorite things together like this!

Opuntia ‘Dark Knight’
This low-growing prickly pear is reported to be a form of Opuntia polyacantha var. rhodantha, and it can withstand temperatures well below freezing. In the winter months, it turns a very dark purple color and becomes somewhat wrinkled, but it shows a little green on its pads in the summer. The magenta-pink flowers are a treat!

Note
Nite, this is urgent. I need to know the kids' favorite flowers + their general color schemes (I'll tag you when finished, if you want). I want to paint them with flowers, kinda like I painted Ashe like this (bad lightning, ik)
Tumblr media
but the only color scheme I know that Rei tends to wear green and yellow, but that's it.
Oh my gosh! That looks so cool!! I'm so excited!! Thank you so much!!!
Rei's flowers are white and yellow freesias, and her color scheme is green, white, and yellow. Edit: WAIT. SUNFLOWERS. REI HAS THE NICKNAME SUNSHINE AND AEDAN'S NICKNAME FOR HER IS A LUS NA GREINE, WHICH MEANS SUNFLOWER. HOW COULD I FORGET THAT.
Marti's flowers are bougainvillea and her color scheme is basically like a desaturated bi flag: orchid pink, heather purple, sky blue.
Jaime's flower is Eguzkilore and his color scheme is orange, cerulean, and navy.
Aedan's flower is Monkshood and his color scheme differs between pre-and-post defection. Pre-defection his color scheme is a talon-typical purple, black, red, and white. Post-defection his color scheme moves in a more Mercy direction but noticeably more autumnal, with burgundy, gold, and white.
Seye's flowers are honeysuckle and his color scheme is Tuscan red, scarlet red, and bronze.
Andrea's flower is the corn/flanders/red poppy, and her color scheme is Navy, black, and red.
Samir and Rajeev both share the lotus flower as their flower, but Samir's Lotus is the more narrow-petaled blue egyptian lotus, and Rajeev's lotus is the fatter, pinker lotus you tend to see in Hindu art. Samir's color scheme is turquoise and gold, and Rajeev's color scheme is cobalt and silver.
Faustine's flower is hellebore and her color scheme is purple, red, and black--though sometimes in a casino environment this color scheme can incorporate more white and gold.
Akasha's flower is the iris! (The leaves look like swords). And her color scheme is sea foam, sky-blue, and black, although the sea foam and the blue can have a slight iridescent effect to them.
Also for the bonus kids:
Phospho's flower is the Sundew and her color scheme is olive green and yellow-orange.
Annie's flower is the prickly pear blossom and her color scheme is sunset colors: think magenta reds and golds.
Guillaume's flower is red spider lily (Wow so edgy) and his color scheme is mostly black and indigo with some red accents.

Been watching The Muppet Show for the first time ever theses past couple days! I’ve only seen the 2011 movie n had some basic knowledge beforehand, but I’m partway through season 2 as I speak! Love it soooo much had to make Muppet ocs asap!
Beastly is the older brother whose a big pushover softy, and Helga is the brash and outgoing younger sister. Designs are loosely based off of plants although the color palette doesn’t quite match up, but Beastly is a lily pad flower and Helga is a prickly pear cactus.

Monster March 2023 Day 4- Alraune
Blooms Of Life
Tumblr media
Always thanks to @borealwrites for their Monster March 2023 prompt list. As well as to @catbatart for their's too. A short and sweet one again. Enjoy.
Monster March Day 4- Alraune
Blooms of Life
You excitedly flitted around to all the different cacti in your chosen “territory”. You were an alraune with a very important job. Making sure that these cacti would bloom at just the right moment to feed the millions of hummingbirds as they would migrate from the southern continents to the northern one and they were all counting on you and the others in the area to have the blooms on the cacti at night as they would fly over and need to stop and “refill” before continuing on.
You had spent all winter nurturing your cacti since the fall migration. And now it was practically spring, and the migration of those precious little jewels would happen again. And you counted on the message getting relayed so that, like a wave, flowers would bloom to feed the birds during the migration, as they migrated over the area.
The blooms had already budded and you made sure that each one was going to be a perfect prickly pear by autumn. You made sure that each bloom had more than enough nectar that would rapidly refill to supply a nearly endless stream of it for the hummingbirds coming, the little flying jewels you had a hand in caring for.
It used to be that you could count down to the very heartbeat of time they would come. But due to global warming, and other weather phenomena, it was getting harder and harder to keep doing this and do it on time when these precious little jewels would need it most. You knew each species by heart, and over the years, you had seen so many generations of hummingbirds come through. And while the little jewels had such tiny little lifetimes- only really compared to your own, but it was the beauty that they brought, the service of pollination that they did, and the joy of watching them that made all the work so worthwhile and satisfying.
You supposed it would be easier to live anywhere else. Where the climate was better, where there were more varieties of blooms to enjoy. But these blooms that you created in the cacti were the very blooms of life for these little jewels. That and the prickly pears these cacti made in the fall were particularly delicious and keeping them fresh all year round was well worth the effort to keep them that way through your own magic.
You really enjoyed that while the hummingbirds were small, they were fierce and had big personalities to match their bright colors. And many generations of them often remembered each alraune on their migration by name! And you knew them by name, mentally keeping tabs of who gave birth to who every year. And on the really rough years, keeping the blooms up and blooming just in case the hummingbirds actually needed to stop and roost and nest. You had cleared every roost in every place you had before, most of them within the many cacti itself. And thanks to a little trickery with the larger land dwellers, you had gotten ahold of a hummingbird feeder and a whole container of concentrated nectar and you had your own special basin in the cacti to mix in should any injured or sick hummingbird need the extra care and assistance.
You had collected many a thread, and many a little smooth thorn that wouldn’t harm the little jewels- should any of them need a brace for a broken leg, or a broken wing. And there was a sanctuary not too far away that you could magic the little jewels, should they require more than what you could offer and give because many of the land dwellers liked to help the little jewels too.
But today meant that besides ensuring the buds would bloom on time, there was not much left for you to do except to wait. And you invited the others that had finished getting ready to come to your main cacti home.
The top of the cacti had it’s thorns removed, with only the buds remaining on the top. You pulled out a preserved prickly pear and began to slice it up for the guests that were soon to arrive as the sun set over the desert. It’s vast flatness, interrupted only by majestic mountains in the far distance. The sunset painted everything that it’s gorgeous light touched in splashes of purple, orange, red, yellow, bits of green and blue as the stars started to come out as you sat between the buds of the cacti and stared up at the stars, noticing how beautiful they could be in the desert, when- as small as your world felt like most of the time, it was good to remind oneself how much bigger everything was. And how when you felt like you were so small, how important you were. How important every little thing was. Even when they didn’t personally always see it all the time.
Then the others came over to join you as you all laid out on the top of the cacti to watch the stars move across the sky and the world turned underneath it.
“Any word on how soon until the hummingbirds come?” You asked the others who had come as you took a piece of succulent from a friend who had gathered quite a bit of it from a patch of hen and chicks in their territory while you took an offered peace as more and more of you arrived and gathered on this cacti, around a crown of buds, only several days away from blooming, but had been many weeks of waiting and watching as the buds themselves grew since the buds themselves could take months to develop.
All of you were eager to trade little food items for others as it seemed everyone brought a little bit of everything that could be found in the area for nearly miles around while everyone else seemed to look over the buds and appreciate where yours were in the stage of growing and could begin to bloom, as others down south, whose buds were literally only a day or two away from fully blooming.
“I asked the others, and they still think it will be more or less on time, maybe a day or two early or, most likely a day or two late, but nothing like weeks or even a month or two late.” She offered apologetically between bites of the agave she brought to share since her territory was closer to an agave farm.
“Well I’m glad I haven’t rushed my blooms then- this year.” You noted as you bit into the juicy piece of succulent, savoring it’s juicy yet crunchy texture and taste.
“Me too. Remember when they came early and we all had to rush to get the blooms open and then it rained and they got delayed? That was awful.” Another recalled.
“Not as bad as that one winter when we had no rain so getting any nectar in the flowers was like pulling it up from the water reservoirs ourselves through one big straw made out of a hollowed out bearded spines of the old man cacti.” Another recollected.
“A curly straw, the big people call those things curly straws.” One of the other alraunes who lived right outside of one of the home developments offered as you rolled your eyes in annoyance at the correction. It used to be that the sight of the big people would cause you all to hide yourselves and your prickly pears and even your blooms from them- for fear they would just take and destroy and not leave anything for everything else. But lately, at least with the large persons that lived around these parts now, they showed with their actions they were trying to conserve and preserve rather than take. Which was a relief to all.
“Do even the big people know yet? They can usually tell pretty well too.” You asked them.
“No. Some of the people in the development have even put out their feeders and nothin so far, nothing but ants eager to get the sweet nectar water.” Thasia shook her head no.
“But you have your feeder and your nectar right?” Anasi asked you.
“I do. But I want to keep it in case of emergencies. And so far…it’s been a decent year so I don’t think I’ll need it. But it’s always better to have it and not need it- than need it and be without it, like those really bad drought years. Water was so hard to come by, my cacti nearly didn’t make it several times.” You confirmed.
“And you?” You asked the others that came over to share this meal with you.
“I’ve tried. The big people make the feeders so heavy. And the bottles of nectar are equally hard to get to because we have to sneak into the big places where they have all the plants in little pots and sprout from the flowers inside the big places to get that stuff out. But hopefully, I’ve heard from others out west, that much rain has come and is continuing to come our way, so maybe this will be a year where we’ll get all the water we need and then some extra for the seasons, years and decades to come.” Phillia offered.
“And hopefully, getting the feeders and the nectar from the large ones will be worth the effort in the long run.” You encouraged.
You all sat around the buds, eating and enjoying each other’s company as you all reminisced about the old times, had hopes about the near future and plans for the coming seasons until you heard a cry that all of you immediately found your feet and then took the air to meet and answer the call.
“They’re coming! They’re going to be on time this year! I’ve just heard news from further south in the rainforests! The rains are coming in from the west and while some places will flood, we will get the rains we need! And the flowers will bloom at just the right time for the hummingbirds!” Nerin announced as all of you cheered and then hurried back to your territories to finish up last minute preparations and make sure that all the buds would bloom right on time as you could already feel all the rains coming in from the many interconnected root systems.
The night came, and just as you heard the call, all of the buds bloomed all on their own before the sounds of millions hummingbirds beating their wings as fast as your own wings could flutter was music to your ears.
You greeted old friends, met new ones as your favorite hummingbirds practically flew straight to you and your cacti to feed and refuel on their journey as you were happy to have them and happy that the blooms gave them all the nectar they wanted and needed as they helped carry pollen from one to another as they flew and flittered between them to feed as much as they could before taking to the air with the others, as it was just an unstoppable wave after wave of them came as you were happy to try to de-mite as many as you could, your little spikes filled with the little parasites that were your own version of “hunting” and “meat" for the season to not only be mutually beneficial but kept the health of the hummingbirds that much better.
And when to see the last of them go, filled you with both a sense of pride, yet bittersweetness, because you knew it would be another 6 months or so before you saw them again when they flew back through to go home in the rainforests. But for now, you had your blooms to fade so that pears would grow in their places and the intense summer heat to endure.

Eastern Prickly Pear - Opuntia Humifusa
This eastern cactus is related to O. tuna, which is the prickly pear available at the grocery store. Similarly the red fruits are edible however I recommend leaving them for birds to spread and propagate naturally, as they are very spiny. In spring they develop a beautiful and showy yellow flower (first image), the fruit later develops from green to red, usually breaking off before the following spring.
The habitat of this cactus is typically limited to extremely sunny and harsh infertile terrain (sand and stone). This species is rather fascinating given our extreme winters, it is one of the most cold tolerant cacti. Subsequently, extreme environments are the best place to find them; in New Jersey, I've spotted groupings most commonly around the maritime forests of sandyhook and along the Appalachian Ridgeline by the Delaware Gap. I've seen a few individuals in the serpentine barrens as well. The range of this species is the entire United States east of the rockies, there is actually a second species of eastern prickly pear which differs by red coloration in the center of the flower.

The Mothership
I step out of my Mom’s house in Port Isabel, Texas. The air feels like a weighted blanket of heat and vapor. Her massive garden rises all around, twelve to twenty feet high, with soaring banana leaves, enormous monstera, and cascading bougainvillea. Like I’ve seen her do my whole life, she has culled from the earth an incredible bounty - full of layers and shapes and color.
Mexican-flag colored string lights hang down from the driveway. I walk past the garden, onto the street, and toward the water - two blocks away. The residential neighborhood is quiet, with a few kids’ toys laid about on grass lawns. Small brick houses with whirring AC units, the occasional dog behind a fence.
The water is an inlet, connected to the bay side of South Padre Island and several miles away from the breaking waves of the Gulf. The water appears thick and green and dark. Along the edge is a seafood wholesaler in a low slung building. Below that is a shrimping boat with a large man at the wheel. He seems pleased and smiles up at me as if to say, “wanna go?”
I take a seat at the picnic table and strain my eyes to the Southern horizon. I know where to look, based on prior visits. There, a couple miles away, I can see a large building next to some narrower structures: SpaceX. Specifically, SpaceX Starbase – where dozens of engineers build massive, next-generation rockets for launching cargo and people on missions to the moon and Mars.
Starbase is so close to Mexico, that I imagine employees could walk down to the US-Mexico border and sit on the banks of the Rio Grande. I doubt anybody does though. Grassy marshlands, clouds of mosquitoes, and herds of prickly pear... you’d have to be looking for a fight.
During my visits here, I’ve heard the locals talk about SpaceX. The sounds they hear when tests are being conducted. The times when they might see a rocket launch. Or the talk of real estate prices and rent hikes. At the edge of town, next to the Walmart and an RV park, a billboard blares, “Beach & Beyond!” with a picture of a rocket ship next to some beach towels.
It’s interesting to think about what people build. The size, the scope, the purpose. There is that which we don’t have – and we reach to. The moon, the stars, the planets. And there is that which we have – and quickly leave behind. The earth, the water, the plants.
While it’s unlikely we will colonize a new planet in our lifetime, the one we have is in dire need of preservation. Imagine what might happen if the amount of money, technology, and innovation that is going into SpaceX were directed at something like, say, fresh drinking water. Just two states away, 150,000 residents of Jackson, Mississippi are in crisis.
At the end of my trip, I arrange for a local taxi to take me to the airport. Before dawn, a woman driver pulls up in a minivan. She’s speaking both Spanish and English into the radio, tracking dispatches. Afterwards, we get to talking. She recognized my Mom’s house, and guessed that I was her daughter. “Your Mom,” she says… “One time she gave me a beautiful plant. No flowers, just beautiful leaves,” and she made the shape of the leaves with her hands.
As we drive through the dark toward the airport, I think about my Mom’s garden – growing, reaching upward to the stars. What miracle of life is this? Right here on Earth. The Mothership.

top 5 albums, dream pets, colours, and plants
albums: so i lack.. what’s that word? variety. and stick to the same bands, so don’t be surprised by the redundancy of this list lol
folie à deux – fall out boy
save me, san francisco – train
mad season - matchbox twenty
mania – fall out boy
my private nation – train
honorable mention: bulletproof picasso – train. i swapped it out for mpn, because i truly forgot how good that album actually is.
dream pets: they can be normal right? doesn’t have to be exotic?
border terrier. tho with how insane canon drives me with his digging, maybe i should reconsider wanting a terrier of any type :x
a deep orange and white tabby kitty. they are just so pretty. it’s literally a basic cat, but i WANT ONE.
a ferret. definitely a bad idea but that doesn’t stop them from being Certifiably Cute.
a bicolor german shepherd. that counts, right? i dream about that. i don’t have that. so i’m going to say it counts.
a pretty little parakeet. i’m not a bird person by any means, but they always make me happy to see them at pet stores, so why not dream about having one.
colors: fam, idk 😭
teal. thought more for accenting.
earthy greens. no green in particular, but definitely not this green.
brass. technically a metal, but also is a lovely accent.
some burnt oranges. they work well, but cannot be the dominant color.
dark blues. again, accenting or a feature/focal point.
honestly with those i kept finding myself viewing it in a design aspect - from art to logos to interior and exterior designs. so while they are colors and shades i do genuinely like, i’m not sure how good of a representation they are of my “favorites” 😅
plants: i’m still discovering my favorites, so this list could very well change!
prickly pear cactus
donkey/burros tail
snake plant
sunflower (technically a flower, but also still a plant)
tulips (samsie^^)

Terrible attempt at a color chart. Chaos! But useful. (I hope.) I f I want my prickly pears to be fruiting, I’ll need to get some quinacrodone magenta. Maybe they’ll just have yellow flowers instead.
