PhD Student Exploitation
I want to start a conversation about PhD student exploitation because I feel like it happens so often and no one speaks about it. And I never realised how easily it could happen until it happened to me.
This is something we need to talk about but no one does because of the fear of repercussions. And it's hard to talk about because you feel ashamed that you let yourself get exploited. I know I did. But it took two years of this happening before I realised it was happening, and now I want to talk about it.
I hope this can be a safe space to talk about if or how you have been exploited. No feeling ashamed. No judgement.
I'll go first:
Designing a whole RCT trial, getting ethics approval, and then being removed from the project because I was "incompetent and making silly mistakes".
Making said mistakes because I was being paid 1 day a week for 5 days worth of work.
Having the RCT published and not seeing my name as an author on any of the papers.
Writing several papers, being removed from the project because I was "incompetent", and then being removed as an author altogether.
Being told that I'm "just a PhD student" and "should expect to work for free.

tomorrow I go back to class for my second year at university !! I'm so excited !! also happy october everybody! (vent about masters applications below:)
but I know that it's going to get REAL very quickly bc I'm already overwhelmed by my workload... in addition to normal uni work, I will also be attending virtual uni open days as this time next year I will be submitting my masters applications......... what?????? ive already started to narrow down my options and do a lot of research bc I know that now and the Christmas break are the only times that I'll have to do this before I have to start writing the applications???? bc I'll be too busy during term and the summer to even think about thinking about thoughts like ?? WHAT??? I was a fresher two minutes ago and now I'm booking postgrad open days like hello???? what???? but I can't say I don't love it because it's soooopo exciting and I love my subject. I'm also aiming more ambitiously in terms of the universities I'll be applying for (will have safeties ofc) so that's VERY motivating. so yeah !! eeeee!!!!!

As someone who graduated w/ a humanities degree I want to let fellow humanities people know that
you’re not a failure for not having your dream job straight out of college/university
if it takes a long ass time for you to get that job, it’s normal
some of these people will say very unhelpful, un-uplifting things and you gotta ignore them
I don’t want to get too vulnerable, but I don’t have any comments about the light at the end of the tunnel. I just hope we all get through there.

november language goals 🩷
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
this will be my first language learning goals post since i started this blog! ♡
my current languages:
french (A2)
dutch (A1)
a lil life update, i finished my masters in the uk and moved back home to germany during this month. i also spent my birthday (17/10) in paris, soon after i arrived back home. while being here, i haven’t done any intense revision other than keeping my streak on the language learning apps that i use. i do have a lot more free time now since i’m currently not working and i’m also done with uni, so i would need to amend and try my best to somewhat stick to my schedule.
here are my november language learning goals ♡:
maintain a 30 days duolingo, busuu & falou streak
write a digital journal entry (notion) about my birthday trip in both french & dutch
work through ‘Niederländisch Wort für Wort’ to and incl. chapter ‘Dieses & Jenes’
finish ‘UNIT ONE: Verbs and pronouns’ in ‘Basic Dutch’
write down all dutch vocabularies up to and incl. the numbers on digital dialects (website)
finish chapter 2 in ‘Dirty French’
write down all french vocabularies up to and incl. the numbers on digital dialects (website)
finish ‘The definite article’ in ‘Modern French Grammar’
write my first entry in my workbook about basic information about myself in both french & dutch
watch 5 easyfrech & easydutch youtube videos
this doesn’t seem like a lot for a whole month but considering i haven’t done much in october, this is a good start to get back into the habit of language learning.
not sure if i will be updating every week or bi-weekly, but i think bi-weekly will be more realistic! 🤍
i do plan on going back to the uk for a few days in november and soon after travel to nigeria for about a month towards the end of this month, so i need to see how i organise my time. good thing is that i mainly use notion and e-books for my revision so i don’t need to carry any (heavy) textbooks with me. let’s see how it goes.
happy halloween & until next time,
mars the prinzess xx

Reintroduction to Studyblr!
instagram
Last year, I graduated from University with a degree in English Literature. I got a job as a teacher, moved to the other side of the planet (🇰🇷👋) and then decided that I was so bored and yearning for more knowledge that I need to start studying again.
So I've been reading a lot of books, because the motivation post-uni has been crazy, and I've started more seriously studying Korean. My goal for the end of 2023 is to finish all ten levels of TTMIK. I'm currently on level 4 about to start level 5! You can find out more about my other goals in my Instagram page.
So here are my basics for a reintroduction!
- Name: Kacie
- Age: 21
- Location: 🇬🇧✈️🇰🇷
- Studying: Korean Language
- Have a writing side-blog for anyone interested in Criminal Minds/ Spencer Reid 👀
I'll be posting semi-regularly but at least once a week! Interested in following other non-student Studyblrs and langblrs!!
Xoxo

Hii!
I'm an undergrad psych student that dreams to be where you are in the future (studying clinical psych)!
I'm striving to be a psychologist but I've heard how competitive it is. As someone who is in postgrad, I was wondering if you'd be okay giving some advice, what scores you had to get in ungrads and honours, what volunteering you maybe did and how postgrad life is!!
Hey! It’s so awesome that you want to go into clinical psych!
I went to a pretty competitive university for undergrad and majored in Psychology with a minor in Disability studies. I ended up with a 3.8 major and overall GPA and graduated Magna Cum Laude. I worked as a FWS student on a clinical trial that focused on helping people with intellectual disabilities access mental health care as well as some odd jobs here and there. I also volunteered at my state department of mental health during the summers while I was home from school and with the National Counsel for Mental Wellbeing as a state captain for Hill Day.
I applied to a small college in my hometown for Postgrad because I wanted the small college feel and it is a really reputable program whose grads see a lot of success. I got in and I absolutely love it. The program has wonderful professors and they are really focused on graduating strong therapists. I will be a masters level Licensed Professional Counselor when I graduate in May 2025.
My advice for you is to find a place to volunteer at that will get you some good hours and face time with the right people. You don’t have to always be doing psychology related things with them. When I volunteered for DMH, I helped with their mental health conference and with Santa’s helpers which purchased presents for kids of patients at the center. I wasn’t always doing psychology stuff but I made some really strong connections and they wrote me excellent letters of recommendation. I wish I had gotten more acquainted with my professors in undergrad but it was hard because I went to such a large school. Find the people who value you and your work and they will give back by writing you glowing recommendations which go a long way in the application process. The more you volunteer and get experience, the more you’ll have to write about in your admissions essay, which I think carried me through the process.
Post grad is hard but it’s focused on what you love and is training you for your dream career. It’s worth every minute. Get as much experience as you can, clinical or not, so you make those connections and get to know people who have influence in different areas. Keep doing what you’re doing! We need people like you in our field! Hope this helps!

Day 3. It gets hotter every day in this city.
Classes are becoming more fun.
There is a break until Friday and then until Monday.
But I committed to two hikes over the weekend and I have to hand in the thesis project, improved, for my master's degree. [Also...work.] It feels like the end of my year is suddenly busier than ever.
Why do I do this to myself?
