So I read all the graffiti from this link (from the kosher garum post I reblogged) and here are some of my favorites:
This man, who has had a bisexual awakening and decided men are better.
Weep, you girls.  My penis has given you up.  Now it penetrates men’s behinds.  Goodbye, wondrous femininity!
Gaius and Aulus, who I really hope got out before the eruption and went on to live their best lives.
We two dear men, friends forever, were here.  If you want to know our names, they are Gaius and Aulus.
The absolute legend Theophilus. May he still be performing oral sex in his afterlife.
Theophilus, don’t perform oral sex on girls against the city wall like a dog
This scathing review of an inn.
What a lot of tricks you use to deceive, innkeeper. You sell water but drink unmixed wine
This person who is just so in love.
If anyone does not believe in Venus, they should gaze at my girl friend
This absolutely savage curse. Chie, I hope you deserved it.
Chie, I hope your hemorrhoids rub together so much that they hurt worse than when they every have before!
The one Neil Gaiman pointed out in the kosher garum post.
The one who buggers a fire burns his penis
This hilarious admission.
We have wet the bed, host.  I confess we have done wrong.  If you want to know why, there was no chamber pot
These men who had bad service but a great time.
Two friends were here.  While they were, they had bad service in every way from a guy named Epaphroditus.  They threw him out and spent 105 and half sestertii most agreeably on whores.
And a whole lot of defecating.

Character building questions for Daniel please, if you're in the mood for answering
What do they notice first in the mirror versus what most people first notice looking at them?
If invited to a TED Talk, what topic would they present on? What would the title of their presentation be?
What do they notice first in the mirror versus what most people first notice looking at them?
Wow, I think there's such a progression for this one. Like the answer would change over time right?
I think Armand really nailed it with his description of Daniel in that basement: the violet eyes, the naive sort of beauty. The perennially young sort face where he could pass for a student even after thirty. I think that's part of what made him a good interviewer in the first place, looking pretty and gentle and young. People would look at that sort of face and trust him right off the bat.
But I think Daniel sees the changes in his body. The dark circles under his eyes first, the lines around his mouth from chainsmoking away the stress of the chase years. His hair starting to curl just behind his ears because he's been on the run for a while and fuck, who can bother with a haircut when they're not sure if they're going to be lectured or killed by the thing that's chasing them?
And it gets a little better after Pompeii. He's trying to develop a sleep schedule, he's catching up on rest. And the blood wipes away some of the exhaustion on his face. It gives his skin a flushed look when Armand lets him drink, keeps him from looking too pallid. Staying up all night has left him pale. His mom would be aghast seeing him like this, without any sun on his cheeks or tanlines on his upper arms.
But the blood gives and the blood takes away. It dries up his hunger, makes it hard to sleep. He looks in the mirror at their new Villa in Miami and notices his cheeks are getting hollow. He looks like one of those guys on speed, haunted but too awake at the same time.
And then there's aging. He's only 30, he's not old. But he finds a grey hair, notices the very beginning of crow's feet at the corner of his eye and panics at the reminder that if this goes on he will get old.
It hits rock bottom when the running starts and he's taking care of himself less. His stubble is becoming a beard. The alcohol has his skin looking like shit. He knows when people look at him they wonder what's wrong with him and when he looks in the mirror Daniel wonders what's wrong with himself.
So being turned- it's jarring, winding back the clock like that. He gets on the plane looking like a relic of himself and gets off as fresh faced as the boy who'd first interviewed Louis. Paler, sure, and with his nails looking like glass. But Daniel has filled back out like it all never happened and when he looks in the mirror he can't look away, because were those other raggedy guys he saw for years really him?
And people go back to looking at him the way they did before. Pretty, youthful, trustworthy. Just now if Daniel looks at them too intently they get lost in his violet eyes and look drugged by the sight of him, the way he felt lost in the sight of Louis once.
If the body deteriorated to the edge of death and then overnight returned to its 20-something splendor, is it really the same body at all? Is this a ship of Theseus problem? Daniel can never really decide.
(And maybe if Gabrielle wasn't so wretched he'd ask her, she'd be the only one who'd really understand what with how she was being consumed by illness and then brought back to splendor but fuck, she scares him)
So I think it's complicated for Daniel in his own way. The mirror reflected the outer effects of his inner turmoil and made it inescapable, and now it reflects his victory. But even that isn't cut and dry- sometimes it's surreal and he can't look for long.

Are the low waves of 1s3 really that easy or am I just stupid? I still can't get anywhere close to beating Lucian's dramatic self but I've cleared Highmore the Hallucinating with no leaks and no 6 stars at least like 7 times by now.
The lower waves of IS3 are easier than normal mode IS2 yeah, because while some stages are outrageous (like Out of Control or Pompeii's two different maps) and dice rolls can fuck with you hard, you actually have a lot less strict team requirements. You just need to have one source of crowd control to ground UFOs and remove Predator evasion (Kroos the Keen Glint is one of the best IS3 ops and she's a free unit!) and you can pretty much just improvise the rest. If you have actually gigabroken ops like Texas Alter you can play the first 4 floors in your sleep, even.
In IS2 though, there's a bunch more mechanics than can just absolutely fuck you if you reach floor 4 unprepared. Poison maps will destroy you if you have no medics (as the damage is constant, so even offclass healing sources like Abjurers or Bards can get fucked), Sarkaz Lancer pinball is another common run ender that requires you to either have constant and consistent crowd control or incredible tanks or both, if you go into the map with the freeze machine you're screwed without vanguards or very cheap snipers as the stage starts you with 0 DP, just lots of stuff like that.
HOWEVER, there are those who actually feel the opposite and that IS2 is much easier than IS3 on the lower floors, and there's also a reasonable explanation for that. Apart from RNG dice rolls randomly destroying your Texas, I've noticed it's actually much harder to snowball off of relics in IS3 than IS2. Money is harder to amass in IS3 despite the greatly buffed treasure chests, which means that the IS2 classic (ASPD relics that scale off your money) is way more difficult to get going in IS3 without getting lucky. The increase in enemy RES also targets some of the strongest combos from IS2 such as Passenger with Hand of Diffusion (although he's still pretty busted with it in IS3, just not a win button), and in general operators who are already good in the base game are good in IS3, while IS2's less refined balancing led to wackier and hilariously powerful combos with underutilized units like Pallas soloing BSL with spinach relics (if you notice, IS3's bosses try to put a stop to this kind of onepunch operator tomfoolery). While Spinach relics and the sort still exist in IS3, the stages try to counter them now by boss mechanics like Highmore's ASPD slow or stage layouts.

I believe that the Valyrians made a pact with the red god(in the form of a godly dragon) worshipped by Melisandre to gain dragons
In exchange…they’ll never raise a king amongst themselves and stay a freehold(republic) for the red god is their true king
Only for slave labor and the resulting class struggle to lead to the fall of the republic and the rise of a Valyrian emperor
Breaking the covenant with the red god and for him to destroy their empire in the doom
Mixing the stories of Pompeii and the fall of the Roman republic
Thoughts on this theory?
I feel that it is a great way to give a Valyrian freehold spin-off a thematic weight
I think there's several huge thematic problem withs this theory: first, GRRM has made a big part of the history of Valyria that the Valyrians were so high on their mastery of dragons and blood magic that they didn't give a shit about religion:
"the dragonlords regarded all faiths as equally false, believing themselves to be more powerful than any god or goddess. They looked upon priests and temples as relics of a more primitive time, though useful for placating “slaves, savages, and the poor” with promises of a better life to come. Moreover, a multiplicity of gods helped to keep their subjects divided and lessened the chances of their uniting under the banner of a single faith to overthrow their overlords. Religious tolerance was to them ameans of keeping the peace in the Lands of the Long Summer."
I don't see that culture entering into a pact with the Red God for any reason.
There's a whole different bizarre occult secret behind the Valyrian Freehold and the creation of dragons, but it has nothing to do with religion. The Valyrians got dragons by using blood magic to crossbreed the flightless firewyrms found deep inside the Fourteen Flames of Valyria with the fireless wyverns found in Sothoryos to create true dragons, and then they used blood magic again to crossbreed dragons with Valyrians. How do we know this? Because Septon Barth is always right.
Moreover, R'hllorites would not be a fan of Valyria and the Valyrian Freehold.
As we see with Melisandre, evangelical followers of R'hllor tend to view other faiths as either false or outright worship of the Great Others - hence the burning of the Seven at Dragonstone and the eventual destruction of the Sept there, the burning of the godswood at Storm's End and the requirement that Jon Snow burn the godswood at Winterfell if he accepts Stannis' offer of legitimization, and so on. A society where there are hundreds of gods because the ruling class are all atheist wizards would be anethema to the devout of R'hllor.
Second, at least in Volantis, R'hllor is a religion of slaves and we see Benerro preaching that Daenerys Targaryen, the Breaker of Chains, is Azor Ahai reborn to huge crowds of slaves who look to their messiah for liberation. If this was the case during the Valyrian Freehold, the worship of R'hllor would have been rather subversive - although not to the same extent as the followers of the Many-Faced God.
No wonder some scholars claim that the Doom was caused by "priests of R’hllor calling down the fire of their god in queer rituals."

This is a very good collectible if you're shooting for fighting Skalter. It counts both of the required collectibles (Bishop's Research, Caerula Animus) as cursed and if you're at a certain Waves level you get a guaranteed third one on F3. While it does nothing to protect you from Monster-Skalter's Pure damage attacks, +75% Def and +30 Res is pretty huge. Pramanix can have up to 33 base Res, so if you also have the Royal Brooch she sits at a comfy 78 Res and can just plink down any Pompeii you might encounter. (It'll take her five hours and she'll end up dying to it anyway)
There are also other events that can give you cursed stuff like the Researcher one (get a low-tier collectible, might be cursed) and the Treasure Cave one (choice between collectible and collectible + cursed collectible). It's honestly already value if you only have one. At that point it's the mid-tier +Def relic but also gives 10 Res.

A City Frozen in Time: The Relics of Pompeii
Pompeii is a city that has remained frozen in time since 79 AD when Mount Vesuvius erupted and buried the city in ash and pumice. For centuries, Pompeii remained buried and forgotten until its accidental rediscovery in the late 16th Century. Today, it serves as a testimony to the everyday life of the ancient Roman Empire, showcasing everything from street markets, luxurious villas, and…

July 26, 1922 Our Boarding House by Gene Ahern
Caption: The wave dodger. [ID: Missus Herzog & Church stand in the sitting room, wearing thick naval dresses with sailor's collars that cover everything but their heads and hands. They both wear hats - Ms. Herzog a bonnet, Ms. Church a regular rather floppy hat tied under her chin. They speak with Major Hoople, who stammers nervously with his hands behind his back and a cigar in his mouth. Clyde and Mack laugh at them from a doorway in the background. /end] Miss Church: Oh, Major Hoople. We were just looking for you! Miss Herzog and I want you to come down to the beach and give us that swimming lesson you promised! Miss Herzog: We just got our bathing costumes out of the trunk. They're not too daring, do you think? I will learn to swim quickly, because I used to be such an excellent wader! Major: Uh-hum... Oh, yes... Er, ah... I forgot to mention, girls, that I'm a salt-water swimmer! Of course, you see, as an instructor in fresh water, I'd be useless! Clyde: Ha-ha, th' Major got out of that neat. He's harder to corner than a round house! Mack: Look at th' suits. They must have got 'em out of th' ruins of Pompeii. It'd take an old moth with false teeth to gnaw those relics.

Maybe he’d resent that more if he’d ever been anything else; but, when the options placed in front of you are harming someone else or seeing your family harmed — well, it’s not really a choice at all. Those new into power tend to come into it thinking they’re going to change the fucking world, and do things right — but there is an order to everything, and it’s existed far longer than Mariano’s been alive. Everyone falls into line eventually, or they don’t. They become Pompeii, or Atlantis — some relic of a thing that may have once existed, and does no longer.
Negotiations are, to his boss — to Claudio Renaldi — a thinly veiled threat. Do what I want, and I spare your life. Sometimes, people don’t even get that courtesy. But for better or worse, this man has been handed a great deal of power and money — and sometimes it’s better to play nice, especially when weapons are involved. “I didn’t think that I was presenting you an option,” Mariano rumbles tiredly. It’s nearly a script now. He’d wanted to protect people once — but the closest he’ll ever get is protecting his own family, raising their status, and making sure to stay five steps ahead in a game that will almost definitely one day see him killed. “Maybe I missed that part.”

Love and Beauty: Ancient Rome Exhibition in Beijing Highlights China-Italy Exchanges
— By Li Yuche | June 13, 2023 | Global Times
Tumblr media
Featuring rare finds like a second century marble statue depicting the "Leaning" Aphrodite - the Goddess of Love and Beauty - an exhibition of ancient Roman art organized by China and Italy opened on Monday at the Beijing World Art Museum of the China Millennium Monument.
The Light of Ancient Roman Civilization is the second stellar cultural event in the past three months to feature Italy's top-notch cultural legacies in Beijing.
Besides ancient Roman art from the collections at Italy's National Archaeological Museum of Naples (MANN), 50 self-portrait paintings from Florence's Uffizi Gallery collection are also on display at the National Museum of China.
This Italian art in Beijing creates great momentum for China-Italy exchanges in 2023. The Ambassador of Italy to China Massimo Ambrosetti told the Global Times that the two countries' cultural communication has already become a "tradition."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Beyond Space and Time
A total of 69 Italian works, including sculptures of mythical European figures like Aphrodite and the god of wine Dionysus, are on display at the exhibition hall with the accompaniment of a live performance of Bach's prelude by a violinist.
These artworks that carry the charm of Greco-Roman philosophy were created around the time of first and second centuries, a period of time that was pivotal to the Western art world since it was during this time that its principles and perceptions on aesthetics formed.
Sculptures, Pompeii frescos and mosaics of extreme artistic value are not the only Italian treasures on display at the exhibition. Deceptively modern-looking glass cups and bottles and other everyday objects provide a window to view Europeans' ancient lifestyles.
These relics are only a small portion of the more than 3 million items in the collection at MANN, the first public museum in Western history. At the time when these artifacts showing Mediterranean civilization were created, the Han Dynasty (206BC-AD220) ruled China.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mario Grimaldi, the exhibition's Italian curator, said that the Beijing exhibition aims to relate "different but comparable aspects of Roman society" and "compare them with the Chinese one."
The exhibition's guide, MANN's director Paolo Giulierini, told the Global Times that while the show features only Italian relics, he is still able to imagine their counterparts in Chinese civilizations.
"The Roman empire and the Chinese empire are notable in history. When I see men and women depicted in Roman art, I can also feel the men and women in the Chinese context," Giulierini said, adding that the cultures of China and Italy met each other "beyond space and time."
Tumblr media
Giulierini also introduced Italy's relic conservation strategy to the Global Times, noting that digital technology has become an essential part of archaeological exhibitions.
Giulierini said that, to provide a better visitor experience, MANN has developed a video game in Chinese that walks visitors through their collections and the museum's history. The game has been played by 2 million Chinese visitors.
Similar to China's creative attempts such as using 3D printing to create exhibits on the Mogao Caves and Yungang Grottoes, Giulierini said that Italy has also used digital technology to restore ancient art.
He said he looks forward to collaborating with China to recreate ancient buildings and sculptures in virtual reality.
"It is only through dialogue that we can break down the barriers that separate us and create a shared sense of humanity," Giulierini noted, adding that he believes museums are "not just a repository of objects," but a "non-political neutral space" to assist cultural exchanges.
Tumblr media
Continued Tradition
Ambrosetti attended the Beijing exhibition's opening ceremony, during which he said he believes shows like this are not just for "presenting or restoring" works of art, but also for learning about the "civilizations that made the artworks."
In the mid-1990s, he was already familiar with Chinese culture as he studied the art of porcelain in Beijing.
An art lover, Ambrosetti noted that China-Italy cultural exchanges have long been a tradition, with notable figures like Italian voyager Marco Polo, who came to China along the ancient Silk Road, and Matteo Ricci, an Italian missionary who brought Western knowledge about subjects such as geometry and geography to China.
Tumblr media
The current exhibition isn't the only event to carry on the tradition of China-Italy cultural exchanges in the contemporary age. Another art exhibition featuring 82 Italian Renaissance artworks was held to celebrate the China-Italy Year of Culture and Tourism in 2006.
This Culture and Tourism Year tradition has been continued for decades. Addressing China and Italy's shared "bilateral comprehensiveness," Ambrosetti said the cultural partnership between the two countries will continue.

what makes kroos alter so strong in is3?
It's specifically referring to the N15 meta.
IS3's difficulty settings work differently from IS2. Instead, every additional level (up to 15) adds a different debuff or enemy buff to your run, sort of like Slay the Spire. Playing at N7 already gets you the maximum amount of run experience, so anything N8+ is simply to show off.
N15 IS3 is an insane place where there is simply so much additional shit to keep track of that who's good and who's bad changes drastically from what you know. Thorns for example, one of the kings of IS2 and a unit that roflstomps low level IS3, is worth bunk at N15 because he simply cannot handle it. Surtr as well, seen as the superior choice to Nearl Alter most of the time in IS2, gets destroyed by shit like N15 Pompeii having 95 RES, while NTRK's S3 shoots way up in value.
You know who's actually seen as a hard requirement at that difficulty level? Mr. Nothing. Mr. Nothing and Erato are needed together to defeat a certain boss who becomes nigh unkillable with burst damage at N15, and so can only be defeated by Nothing and Erato cycling their stuns and sleeps with relics.
Anyway, at that difficulty level Kroos the Keen Glint is just a ridiculously efficient unit for her cost, just like regular Kroos in IS2. She can deal upwards of 100k damage within her skill duration, has 5 star hope costs, cheap DP costs, Marksman range, and has a stun on her attacks (IS3 will feature flying enemies that you'd want to stun).
