Look! Look! It's the site that had the Mew trick in 2002, the one I saw and rolled my eyes really hard at and dismissed as obviously fake! It's so obviously fake and even has a disgruntled commenter saying it's bogus. Ridiculous arbitrary instructions about how you must not have battled these particular random trainers (so conveniently you can't test it without restarting your save file), overly complex confusing instructions, supposedly the menu will just pop up out of nowhere and then if you press B a wild Mew appears. Urgent allcaps insistence that it DEFINITELY WORKS and if it didn't work you must have DONE IT WRONG. So, so fake except for the bit where it was actually real, I cannot.
I am delighted that this has been found. The link seems to have been quietly added by Damian001 to the Bulbapedia page for the glitch this October 31st and I'd heard nothing about it. God damn.

If you dont mind me asking, for the pokemon glitches you were talking about, what are they? How did you get the shiny odds so increased?
There's a pretty infamous glitch in Gen 4 games (so Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold, and SoulSilver) called the Cute Charm glitch!
If your Trainer ID is too close to the hidden Secret ID, and you use a pokemon with the Cute Charm ability to lead your team, there's some weird code fuckery that happens. Maybe there's an overflow somewhere, or it runs a calculation incorrectly, but it turns the normal shiny odds in those games from 1 in 8000 to about 1 in 5!
I followed [this tutorial] from "im a blisy" on YouTube to introduce me to the idea of RNG manipulation. I wanted to learn how to do it so I could RNG Pokemon Colosseum or Gale of Darkness for Shadow Pokemon with good IVs!!
Tumblr media
It looks all very complicated with all the programs open!! But the fun part about it all is that this isn't hacking my game in any way!
I performed this glitch on an unmodified copy of Diamond, on original DSi hardware. These programs don't touch my game at all, they're just telling me what date to set my DS to, and what frame to press the A button on!
Every shiny Pokemom I catch in this copy of Diamond is 100% legal and can be transferred over to newer games with no problem whatsoever.
And I CAN confirm that this works!! It took me about 5-6 hours to hit the correct frame and learn what the programs do!
Tumblr media
You should try it if you're interested!!

Hey, so, I just found out there's a new bug in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet that can corrupt your save file? It hasn't happened to me yet (knock on wood), but I thought I'd share what little I've learned about it.
There are two error messages that may occur. Save Data Not Recognized (hereafter "NR") and Corrupted Data Was Found (hereafter "CD"). Of the two, NR is the more serious. There are apparently fixes for CD, but none yet for NR. The NR message is generated in the game itself, while the CD message is from the Switch.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It should be noted that NR appears to be a relatively rare issue, but it's always better to be prepared. The cause is still unknown. It does not appear to be linked to connecting to Pokémon Go or preordering the DLC. There is also at least one instance of somebody experiencing the issue before updating to Version 1.2.0.
If you experience the NR error, do not erase or overwrite your save data. It may still be recoverable. Contact Nintendo Support.
The CD error may be related to attempting the Walking Wake/Iron Leaves raids without updating to v1.2.0, or it might just be a thing that happens sometimes. But it is less serious and can be fixed.
If you experience the CD error, it can apparently be resolved by starting a new game on a second profile, saving, and then switching to your original profile. It may also be worthwhile to contact Nintendo Support in this instance as well. (I'd say do it even if this fix works for you. Let them know how broken this game is. Bemoan the fact that the "Official Nintendo Seal" used to actually mean something. But please be nice to the customer support agent; it's not their fault.)
You should also back up your entire SD card. Turn off your Switch, remove the microSD card, plug it into your computer, and copy all the files to your hard drive. (Update: This will not help with this issue as Pokémon does not save to the SD card, but it's still not a bad idea to back it up anyway.)
(Also, there is a megathread on r/PokemonScarletViolet. You should check there for more information because this is all I know about the issue, and I got most of my information from there.)
Update 2023-03-10 (copying my reblog here so it can be found in the main tags):
Serebii reports on Twitter that a new patch will be coming in late April that fixes the bad egg glitch from the 5 Star Paradox Raids. Hopefully, the save data glitches will receive a hotfix sooner than that, but it sounds like they're still not sure of the cause. However, Joe from Serebii has confirmed that TPCi/Nintendo are aware of the issue, and again, it is not linked to Pokémon Go or the DLC, but they're still not sure what the actual cause is. More details should be coming later, so check back on Serebii.net.

I would like to reiterate that this is a very rare issue. Of the 20 million+ copies sold, fewer than 100 people have experienced this issue. That's a fraction of a fraction of a percent. As u/madebypeppers on r/PokemonScarletViolet puts it, you have better odds of winning $1,000,000 from the Powerball.

If you have migraines, seizures, or narcolepsy I’d suggest either breaking frequently when playing Pokemon Violet/Scarlet or even waiting until they fix it.
I thought it was just a me thing. I have a history of being very sensitive to motion sickness especially in games and I also have TMJD which causes frequent migraines. But I have been reading up on other peoples anecdotes and the situation seems to be consistent throughout the board, even in people who don’t frequently have motion sickness or headaches. some cases even report having such severe eye-strain that they have episodes of narcolepsy even if well-rested. Some can’t even tolerate to watch a stream of the game for more than 10 minutes.
Here are a few anecdotes I have found on Reddit and YouTube:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media

Here’s the Reddit form I got the Reddit comments from. I’d suggest if you experience the same problems as me to comment on and upvote this forum. I feel like this needs to gain more traction than it has. Nintendo and game freak need to realize they’re hurting people with how under-developed their game is. I love the game design and the game mechanics but is frankly embarrassing how awful this game is that it causes people to literally pass out due to the eye-strain while playing it.
I know not everyone is experiencing these problems but please realize that just because you are not experiencing problems with headaches or eye-strain from this game, it doesn’t mean that a lot of people aren’t. I know we all love Pokémon. I have enjoyed Pokémon since I was 11 years old. It saved me from a very lonely and awful time in my life. I love it enough that I am willing to speak up about the problems that is giving me. It hurts so much that something that usually gives me comfort is giving me physical pain instead.
Saying it’s “launch week, they’ll fix it, get over it” is not enough. Pokémon games I played when I was a child, I played during launch week and they were top notch. When did it become acceptable for a game to launch with so many bugs? Even if they can fix it or patch it up, I just find it so lazy for them to just throw this thing out there with no care for the people who support and love this franchise.
It’s time we put our foot down. This is the top leading media franchise in the world. There is no reason, literally no reason at all for the games to be coming out this bad. They have the money, they have the resources. The only reason I see is that they don’t care at all anymore.
If you love Pokémon, please help me get this post and the Reddit forum more traction. I want news articles written about this. I want this to be the top discussion about what’s happening with Pokémon. I want Nintendo to realize that they can’t come out with these crappy products anymore. It’s heartbreaking to see how much love was put into the character designs and storylines only for the game to have obviously been rushed and lazily put together.

There is an unpatched glitch in both BDSP and SWSH. If you catch a pokemon and simply nickname it “Egg”, the game gets confused on the name and puts “the” in front of it when you interact with it. So for example, sending your pokemon to a box will result in the game saying “the egg was sent to a box.” Though this seems to be the only thing this glitch does, the games still treats the pokemon like regular pokemon.

When i started a cutscene while being chased by a Bombirdier trying to battle me, I didn't expect it to follow me into a cutscene. I thought that seeing it hovering in front of the sign that we were reading as if nothing was out of the ordinary was funny enough, despite the seriousness of the cutscene, but then this happened.

Speaking of R/B/Y-era rumours, @johtotimes just published a very fun issue going over some of the wild stuff that was getting spread around back then!
I'm particularly tickled by the Pikablu rumour screenshotted in the article:
Tumblr media
It's similar to but not quite the same as the one that was on Mew's Hangout that I genuinely believed for a time (in that one, stated to be confirmed by Nintendo, you needed seventeen Pokémon at level 100, and I just never got there). It's very illustrative of the sort of thing that was going around, and the commonalities with the actual genuine Mew trick are uncanny:
There's a high barrier to entry: you probably can't just go try this right now. Maybe you've used a GameShark ever and then too bad, it's not going to work for you. Or you haven't completed your Pokédex. Or, while your team of six may be high-leveled, probably you don't have seventeen Pokémon that you've trained up. Similarly, for the Mew trick, you need to have not fought these two random trainers that you had no reason to avoid on your playthrough, and if you have - oops, too bad, you can't try it. So you can't prove it doesn't work, right?
You need to perform a secret arbitrary sequence of steps involving interacting with these particular random NPCs in very particular ways, ones that have no sensible connection to "Pikablu". They're just the key that unlocks it, for some reason. Similarly, the Mew trick, again, involves an encounter with Mew being unlocked by interacting in very particular ways with these two particular random trainers, for some reason.
You need to stand in this one very specific spot and then immediately use Fly to go to a specific place. In the Mew trick you also need to stand in a very specific spot, then move down and very quickly press Start to Fly to a specific place.
It describes some funky vaguely glitch-sounding behaviour, where you get this mystery item where trying to use it just acts like you selected Cancel, and when you talk to Oak it gives you recycled dialogue about a different item - juuust enough to sound kind of weird and spooky, but not like any kind of full-on memory corruption is happening. Similarly, the Mew trick involves little mildly weird spooky bits like that: an exclamation mark appearing above a trainer's head while you're flying away, your Start button not working for a bit, the Start menu popping up by itself. But there's no obvious apparent full-on corruption going on. All the visibly glitchy behaviour is subtle and temporary.
It was truly such a perfect coincidental storm of circumstances that happened to make it fall so neatly in line with all the rumours. In hindsight, there are of course also some noteworthy differences we can identify: most prominently, in the Pikablu rumour there's an NPC with supposed dialogue specific to this sequence, which would mean this would have to be an intentionally programmed easter egg with the prior random interactions as a very obtuse but presumably intentional trigger, whereas the Mew trick features no new NPC dialogue because it's simply a legitimate glitch that these NPC interactions happen to trigger. But not every rumour involved new dialogue, and legitimate glitches in games can also sometimes trigger unused dialogue; even with hindsight, nothing about the instructions themselves should have been a giveaway that the Mew trick was the genuine article in a sea of urban legends.
