Ok so I had a pokemon worldbuilding thought for my oc stuff, but I'm gonna drop it here for anyone to consider bc tbqh I feel like it just makes sense:
What if, as legendary incidents see a sharp spike in occurrence, the title of "champion" becomes synonymous with being a sort of keeper or tender of Legendaries?
See, in a lot of games, npcs who speak of the local legendaries tend to talk of them more in the sense of folklore or cryptid or myth - creatures people haven't laid eyes on in ages, who aren't even positive existed. It's not until respective "evil teams" or whatever per each game plot actively stir up trouble and wake these mythological wonders up. And then in a lot of cases, they're Up for the foreseeable future.
Regions who only had champions for essentially sportsmanship purposes, now have to task their proven strongest trainer - who perhaps already faced and took down their local rampaging legendary, if you're following game structure - with the job of making sure the legendary is left unbothered and also not running rampant.
What does this mean? Well, it's different for every region, every legendary, and each champion is going to have a different approach on it. Some of them capture the Legendary and train it as their own, some of them keep it in boxes (pastures), some of them simply keep an eye on its home to make sure no one trespasses and stirs up a fuss. Some regions, like Alola and Johto, seem good about having protocols in place for how to interact with and respect the legendaries. Others, not so much, which means that while the title of Champion comes with this added task, the actual job descriptors get kind of vague after that.
I think too, this sort of added responsibility would explain any need for a champion changeover, too. A lot of champion npcs seem implied to have been the champs for a while - and, depending on how you interpret the game mechanics that allow you to re-challenge them, they often maintain their status even once you've defeated them. While it's simple to argue that it's not that common for trainers to reach the level of skill required to dethrone a champion, I do think it'd be interesting if the champions step down and trade off for someone who has already quelled the legendaries themselves, because the 'current' champions were not qualified to handle them.
Tl;dr - the games don't offer a lot of insight on what would happen with legendaries in-game if the player didn't choose to catch Every One and tame it, and the occupation of champion always seemed to me like it'd have a limited set of active responsibilities with a lot of gaps, so I decided to take care of two zapdos with one stone and brainstorm a solution for both! This isn't heavily canon-compliant, and isn't meant to be, but hopefully it feels plausible enough to work with!
Also - If enough people are interested, I may share my flexible breakdown of how arduous a task being a legends keeper is in each region! I cited Alola and Johto as being a bit easier with existing protocols built in, but I've put some thought into just how challenging each region could be to oversee, and how this could influence champion approach!
As mentioned, feel free to run off with this concept for your own ocs! And if you want, tag me in lore posts for it! This is my oc blog, but I also like to showcase other peoples' stuff, and I'd love to see how people approach this concept!

I sincerely hope I’m sending this request correctly. I wanna ask for a pokemon request where reader has a full Unown team with the Paldea crew reaction(Arven, nemona, penny) and maybe the blueberry academy crew reaction. I love unowns they’re my funky little letter guys. Basically the reader is an Unown enthusiast who only ever has unowns and only ever used Unowns. They have all the forms but the six they use are just the ones they took with them to Paldea. They went through Paldea and became champion with a full Unown team. Same with the bb league. I just think it’d be funny to see everyone’s reactions to that. Their partner mon would be Unown O and the other five you could pick cuz Unown O is my favorite letter. And also if u could write the unowns being affectionate with the reader and vice versa. I just like seeing trainers bonding with their pokemon. Thank you and I enjoy your writing!
(Side note: Honestly if ScarVio was able to have unowns in it you’d bet your ass I’d do a full Unown run. I’ve done it for other games. Was disappointed and sad I couldn’t have any unowns in them, sword/shield too.)
I LOVE the Unowns omg. I got a plushie of V and I'm still trying to get shinies and alphas in PLA
My favorite is F because it looks like a little stick figure but I adore all of them very much <3
Tumblr media
.......
General
Ever since discovering the Unown in Johto (Ruins of Alpha) and the two additional forms in Kanto (Tanoby Chambers), you found your calling as a trainer.
An Unown trainer, to be precise.
Unown O was the first one you caught, and has been your battle partner ever since!
You've become something of an enthusiast, asking researchers what they've discovered and documenting the Symbol Pokemon as you collected them.
You've caught so many that you actually encountered a shiny or two--each capture being a success.
Their existence, connection to Arceus, home dimension, and "secret power" when more than one are gathered were all fascinating to you and made you wanna learn more.
You even incorporated some of their designs into your outfit: like gloves and socks that had symbols printed on them, keychains and charms on your jewelry and/or backpack..etc.
All 28 Unown grew to love you, and the ones in your party are super affectionate when you bring them out.
Their favorite game is hide n' seek (taking after their "ancestors" from PLA) around your home, and you like to play along.
Ofc people are wary around Unown given their mysterious nature, but you vow to break that stigma by feeding them treats and letting them nuzzle up to you, showing others that they're just like any other Pokémon: companions who deserved as much love and affection as a Pikachu.
After parting ways with your friends in Kanto and Johto, you don't leave without gifting them an Unown that was the first letter in their name (for Blue you left him a Shiny Unown B...which he still brags about to this day).
You decided to move to Paldea to take your Pokémon training more seriously, attending school and showing off your Unown since they're not native to the region.
Your team consisted of O, as well as N, E, F, R, and M--referring to what all 28 are collectively called (One Form).
Despite knowing they can only use Hidden Power and nothing else (plus the drawbacks from having a psychic-only team), you defied all the odds when you took on not one but TWO championships and won.
And of course, the friends you've made during your journey all got to know the Unown personally.
Paldea
Arven
At first, he thought your Unown team had more to it...until he realized that was ALL you brought to the battlefield.
Just funky letters that only knew one move.
"Oh come on, you're never gonna win with a team like that-"
And then you go and beat him with a team like that, and it shuts him up.
But Arven just rolls his eyes to the sky, making the excuse that he's not used to battling, and moves on.
As you get closer to him, though, and help him take down the Titan Pokémon around Paldea, he warms up to your team and admits they're kinda cool.
He'll only shoo them away if he's making a sandwich, not wanting to be crowded (but tbh he can tolerate Unown O's presence more than your 'raidon's).
You presented him with picks inspired by the designs of some Unown (I, K, T, Y, and !) to hold the ingredients together, and he's thoroughly impressed by your dedication to the craft.
You joked about selling them if you ever went into the art of culinary--yet Arven tells you to seriously consider it.
After the fight with the AI Professor in Area Zero, he sees your entire team pop out of their pokeballs, clearly stressed from being locked inside due to the Paradise Protection Protocol.
You never did a battle without them and were afraid they couldn't protect you, but you reassured them you were okay, letting them stay out during the journey home.
Only then does he realize that sure, they're weird little guys that don't seem all-that powerful, but you treasure them all the same.
Nemona
While she was confused about you not using the Paldea starter the Director offered you..she's HYPED when your real team comes out to play during your first match together: One made entirely of Unown, a Pokémon not even native to Paldea.
She may have read about them in some textbook unrelated to battling and glossed over them.
But to see them in battle left her extremely impressed and asking you dozens of questions afterwards.
They could just change their type when attacking??? She read about Arceus supposedly having that power, but it's awesome that these little letters/symbols can, too!
Despite thinking you'll bore her by having no strategy except "use hidden power", Nemona NEVER wants you to feel discouraged!
She wants to battle your team every time.
As you fight your way through the Pokémon League and all the way up to the Elite Four, she's rooting for you 100%, praising your Unown for overcoming even the toughest terastalized foes.
Knowing your party members, they LOVE praise and are very friendly towards her and her own Pokémon.
If any of them have timid/lonely natures..her words give them a big confidence boost.
And it reflects in their reaction times and how often they'll heal their own status conditions or tank OH-KO hits.
She says you're helping them get stronger every day, but you give her lots of credit, too, for helping you get this far.
Penny
While dealing with Team Star, Giacomo's dark team put your Unown through a world of hurt...
Penny had been watching the battle, worried that he was going to be the reason you failed to squander the organization.
Yet by some miracle, your team came out on top!
Only then does she realize you were more than capable of taking down all the bases.
Unown P comes out to greet her while you've doing an LP exchange, and it scared her pretty badly.
Especially as it just...stares. Occasionally blinking once or twice as she tries talking to you.
Conversations are hard enough for her already, and staring doesn't help matters, so she gets ready to leave-
But then its tune changes when you pat it on the head(?) and it trills happily, snuggling up to you.
Penny had to do a double-take, wondering how it managed to look so cute..but she dismisses your concerns when you asked why she made that face.
Later, after revealing she's the leader and becoming your friend thereafter...she still gets anxious around the Unown from time-to-time, but eventually warms up to their presence.
You don't treat them any differently despite their mysterious nature.
If anything, you care for them just like anyone would a cute Eevee: by spoiling them with love, treats, and sweet words of encouragement.
Penny felt like a hypocrite for being scared of them, considering people used to be scared of Team Star--yet they aren't as evil as everyone made them out to be.
They used to be lonely and misunderstood, just like the Unown were before you found them.
BB Academy
Kieran
When you showed off your team for the first time, Kieran was stunned.. remembering the things he read about them but didn't know they could actually be caught.
All he says when you show him Unown K is "wowzers".
And the journal entries you've logged turned his eyes into stars.
You show him all the photographs of ruins and Unown blending in during your trips to the signboards, rambling about what you've seen and discovered.
He loves listening to your tales..and wishes he could see those places with you.
But what he didn't like, however, was whenever you two had a battle in which your Unown only needed one command to win. You didn't have to try at all.
Even with his team's most supereffective attacks..speed and dumb luck were on your side, crushing his confidence and making him jealous.
It doesn't help when you still decided to keep Ogerpon despite you saying you only ever used Unown.
It wasn't fair.
And ofc by Indigo Disk, Kieran wants nothing more than to destroy your team, insulting them under his breath when he thinks you can't hear him.
You just scowl and cover their nonexistent-ears while they nuzzle up to you--although deep down, you knew he didn't mean those words.
He's just pissed off that he lost sleep and his appetite over training his team, giving them the best moves and items to utilize on the battlefield..only for you to sweep the BB League with a simple command.
He managed to OH-KO one Unown with Incineroar's Darkest Lariat..and that sinister grin you saw on his face was most unnerving.
But you still claimed victory over him and he takes the loss hard.
Down in Area Zero, he's convinced that the "Hidden Treasure" Terapagos can take down your "Hidden Power" team..
But after seeing them form a shield (similar to the crystal one in the Spell of Unown movie) that protects him when the legendary goes rogue..it changed his perspective.
Only then he understood why they were so powerful.
As the Unovian Pokedex said: Alone, nothing happens..but together, Unown are strong and invoke a great power.
When the dust settles, O floats into Kieran's hands, healing the pain in his wrist caused by Terapagos breaking the masterball.
He felt so so guilty for the name-calling and his desires to hurt them. Yet they've all forgiven him.
In a way, Unown remind you of him: small and unassuming, at first glance..but full of great power that's waiting to shine.
During Mochi Mayhem, K stays by his side while he holds off the possessed townspeople and you capture Pecharunt, growing quite attached to him.
And after coming back to the academy, you decide to trade him that Unown, hoping he incorporates it into one of his teams. Be it casual or competitive.
Carmine
Back in Kitakami, she laughed at your "puny"-looking letter Pokémon, thinking them to be weak as she sics Poochyena and Polteageist on them.
While their dark/ghost moves hit the Unown hard, it's Unown O who takes them down with critical hits..and Carmine got LIVID.
She impressed you're sticking with a team that appeared in ancient texts, although that doesn't dissuade her from teasing you about them for a while.
Ngl you nerding out over Unown facts and studies you've recorded reminds her of Kieran infodumping about Ogerpon.
Your Unown just glare at her, and you gotta call them back to your side before they try attacking her outside a battle.
However as time goes on and she warms up to you, meets Ogerpon, etc..she grows to like them more, too.
Eventually she's cheering them on as they take down the Loyal Three and tank their poison attacks.
By Indigo Disk's events, she comes around to genuinely smile at their presence.
Although she had concerns Kieran's new team would be too overwhelming for them...
Yet your team of hieroglyphics won anyways.
And down in Area Zero's underdepths, they invoked a great power to shield the siblings from Terapagos' attacks, protecting the two people who once hated and mocked them with all they had.
As they both break down in tears, some Unown come out of their pokeballs to comfort them, and O stays on your shoulder as you exit the cavern together.
A few photobomb the selfie you take with the twins back at the academy (as well as Kitakami's festival), but it's alright.
Carmine will allow it because you treasured them and they DID save her and her brother's skin.
Drayton
While you did struggle during his trial (due to his "Terarium Pokemon-only" rule), the actual battle caught him by surprise when your Unown swept the floor, taking down his dragons.
How Unown F was able to withstand an Electro Shot was beyond him, but it was sturdy enough to finish the fight with a Fairy-based Hidden Power.
After winning, you both take a selfie in commemoration, with you passing F to Drayton like "can we get an F in the chat" and him humbly accepting it.
It was all in good fun, and looking back on it in your scrapbook made you laugh.
But what you didn't feel good about was him rubbing your victory in Kieran's face after you win the championship, further shattering the kid who nearly keeled over trying to make the perfect team to beat you..only for some "letters" to kick him down into the dirt.
"Wow, that's tough..now are you gonna take the F or L, ex-champ?"
He forgot this kid doesn't understand much internet lingo, but Unown F and Unown L didn't appreciate his jokes, and neither did you.
But after the events in Area Zero, you let it go, eventually deciding to trade him Unown D as your way of thanking him for helping you get close enough to knock sense back into Kieran.
Crispin
Let's face it, he's gonna be staring at your Unown like a Magikarp out of water and ask how they eat..
Or if they eat at all for that matter.
Their eyes just blink and poof, their share of the meal is already gone.
He knows they're psychic Pokémon, but still...
His favorite ones are definitely C (bc of his name) and S (for Spicy), though he's eager to see how your team fairs in battle when you clear his trial.
You warn him it might be "boring" but he acts like you insulted his cooking and begs you not to say that again.
"Every Pokémon battle gets me fired up!!!!! Don't downplay yourself!!!"
Even when your Unown easily douse his Pokémon's flames with Water-based Hidden Power (and Fire for his Exeggcutor), he still had a blast battling you, realizing those little letters are full of vigor and surprises!
He's eager to see what supereffective type they're gonna use next.
When you eventually decide to trade, you contemplate giving him an extra Unown F you had..or a C.
But you settle for the latter, and Crispin promises to feed the little guy well!
Lacey
Unown are small, simple, and make trilling noises...all checking off her criteria of "cute" Pokémon!
Although knowing they're connected to Arceus--the literal god of all 'mons--is an unnerving fact, she agrees that they're adorable and deserve to be treated as such.
She gets to learn your team's different natures, and likes how you're trying to convince people that they're not as scary as the old legends present them.
They love nuzzling up to you, resting on your shoulder and/or head, twirling around, and playing with the local Minior.
That being said..Lacey gets shocked at the punch they pack during battle, with them using Poison or Steel-based Hidden Power to take down her fairies.
It's always the most unsuspecting Pokémon who are the most powerful.
Even if you worry about the battle being boring since all you can give out is one command, she's gonna turn your pessimistic thinking around!
Unown F is her favorite since it's looks like a stick figure, but Unown L is also pretty neat..yet she wonders why Unown ? and Unown ! look tired all the time...
When you trade her a letter/symbol, she's thrilled to welcome yet another cute Pokémon onto her team!
Amarys
Considering their affiliations with ruins and Arceus, the existence of Unown have always piqued her interest.
And you so-happened to be a walking encyclopedia of anything related to the Symbol Pokémon, given the journals you've written on their mannerisms.
Amarys likes reading them over, and thinks a quiz involving the Unown Alphabet would be good to have at BB Academy.
On the other hand, after your battle to climb the League rankings, she wonders if you've ever used other Pokémon..only to find out that you never did.
All you know are Unowns.
She won't force you to change your team members, seeing as they were able to beat ALL of the league members--including Kieran.
But she suggests you had one Unown use Hidden Power on its battle partner, who could hold onto a Weakness Policy.
Yet you're adamant, saying "why would I want one Unown to hurt the other just for a temporary attack boost? :((("
Your team members are besties, your cuddle buddies..how could you do that to them???
Amarys is genuinely touched by how much you care for your Unowns, and vice versa.
Speaking of which, Unown A started hanging around her more often..and she cautiously tries to pet it, surprised by its happy trills, but otherwise acts nonchalant.
When you both decide to trade, you give her that Unown and she promises to look after it.

nanami kento x reader, pokémon au, wc: 450
thank you to @strawberrystepmom for inspiring this series! and i hope you like the teaser at the end for what’s to come :)
Tumblr media
Your team’s rigorous training schedule continued over the following days, never knowing when a traveler will show up and challenge you to a match. Each of your Pokémon is special. As you’ve grown alongside them you’ve become aware that some require more unique forms of training.
Your gym has regained its quiet status now that Nanami and Yuji are gone. But that’s probably for the best. At least in the present moment.
The sun shines down on the lake as you lay in your bathing suit atop the large inflatable ring, your arms and legs hanging over the sides, as Psyduck lays on your stomach. You both sport matching sunglasses as you float lazily along the water. Your bodies are gently rocked to and fro as you remain quiet and contemplative.
Your mind drifts to your youth and how you and Nanami used to do something similar together. But instead of rolling water you’d lie on beds of lush grass and watch the clouds roll across the sky. It always felt nice knowing he was by your side, his fingers just inches away from yours if you ever needed the physical reassurance that only he could provide. At the time you were certain he felt the same towards you. But now, after years have passed and many things left unsaid and unexplained, you don’t believe he felt the same relief at seeing you as you did him.
You know it’s selfish of you to want to regain the relationship of your youth. You know it doesn’t make sense. You’re different people on different paths. The only thing you can hope for now is that they will cross once more in the future.
A faint noise coming from the shore reaches your ears. You lift your head and see two people standing at the edge of the water, one waving their arms eagerly in your direction and calling your name while the other holds onto the edge of their skirt. You lift your sunglasses to make sure your eyes aren’t deceiving you.
“Psyduck.” The Pokémon in your lap lets out a deep, mournful sigh.
“I suppose the peace was nice while it lasted.”
Psyduck grumbles as you start to paddle toward land, a smile stretches across your lips as you get closer.
You heard he stepped down as League Champion. You also heard he would be traveling across the regions with a friend. Ever since your friendship with Satoru started when he showed up on your doorstep, demanding to battle the reclusive psychic gym leader deep in the forests of East Johto, you’ve been curious to meet this friend you’ve heard so much about. The one who captured Gojo Satoru’s heart.

since palletshipping week is almost here, I’ll share some hcs!
Gary:
• I already mentioned this on my twitter, but his pendant from his first outfit (OS-Chronicles) was originally his late father’s 🥲
•His parents passed when he was about 3 years old. He has vague memories of his parents, but knew that they loved him :(
• His maternal grandparents live in Johto! He didn’t really get to see them in person for the first time until he journeyed to the region. The reason why is because his grandparents don’t like to travel and they are EXTREMELY old school so they don’t have rotom phones/video phones.
•His sister, Daisy is a Pokémon breeder in Paldea! She used to be a coordinator but wanted to take a different path after traveling a few regions. She now likes to style pokemon for contests :)
• Gary ends up doing online college for his Bachelor/Masters degree so that he can stay with Ash.
Ash
• His father passes when he was about 4 1/2 years old. Gary, knowing the feeling of losing a parent, comforts his during this time. (note: i know the canon AU implies that is dad is living. I’m basing the hcs off of the regular canon)
• one of his earliest memories with his dad is watching one of the Pokemon league competitions on TV
•pretty sure i mentioned this on twitter as well but, Ash eventually gets tired of the monotony of being a defending world champion, which leads into his existential crisis at the age of 14
• He likes to sleep in LATE on weekends. Poor guy isn’t used to working full time 😔
Both
•they start dating at the end of their time in Paldea. They’re about 15-16 during this period. Let’s just say that their experience in Area Zero may have expedited the confessions.
•They get engaged when they’re 21.
•they get married a year later at Oak’s Corral so that all their pokemon get to see them get married 🥹
•about 10 years into their marriage, they adopt a young girl named Luna (I’ll talk about her in a future post)
•if they can’t come to an agreement on what they should have for dinner, they battle!

Pokémon World History Notes
This is based upon a dream I had in which I made a theory post about Pokémon World humans being descended from refugees from Earth, as well as a bunch of assorted Pokémon worldbuilding thoughts I had a month ago that I've since polished. Meant more to be internally consistent for a specific interpretation, as opposed to a blanket statement to count as canon for the whole of Pokémon as it was intended; this is MY spin on Pokémon, my own AU built off of the pieces I was given:
Pre-History: Humans first came to Pokémon World from our world, as space refugees from the now defunct Earth. This was millennia ago, and spacefaring technology is long-lost to time. Current human civilization is built on the forgotten foundations of Earth culture.
Notes: I put the pre-history at 5.5k years ago, as Gogoat was domesticated by early humans 5k years ago, according to its 'dex entry. There ARE records of humans before this, such as a mural of Cyclizar being ridden 10k years ago and the first Claydol supposedly coming from a human doll 20k years ago; however, the Pokémon World is temporally and spatially unstable, so I've decided that those two instances were from temporal anomalies. Also worth noting, I do not think that Pre-History is common knowledge to Pokémon World humans. It might even be lost entirely.
Ancient History: Ages ago, before Pokéballs, the strong ruled the weak, and you proved you were the strongest by having the strongest monster under your command. This was hard to attain because, before Pokéballs, controlling a monster required constant training and attention for decades. Back then, people lived in genuine fear of Pokémon, which was exploited by people who knew how to tame them.
Pokéball Era: In Johto, people eventually figured out how to make Pokéballs from Apricorns, though they had a poor catch rate. This swayed the balance in favor of the weaker people and destabilized the might = right mentality. Fighting for leadership became more commonplace, pitting monster against monster as a challenge of strength. As this era progressed, rules were established for these fights to lead, leading to the hard limit of 6 Pokémon to a team and the rule that fighting concludes when the opposing Pokémon is unconscious.
Rise of Gyms: People in charge became known as Gym Leaders, as fights for rulership were held in gyms to avoid collateral damage. Gym Leaders wanted to keep their power as Pokémon training became more accessible. At the same time, the villages they ruled wanted someone in charge that wasn't just brute-force powerful with a dragon by their side. In order to keep your title as Gym Leader, you had to follow a set of rules of conduct, share power with the elders of the town, and show your appreciation and willingness to preserve the town's culture by participating in cultural events.
This is what led to monotype Gyms being the norm—you want your team to reflect the town you rule, to prove to the population that you put care and thought for the town into picking your monsters. Meanwhile, in order to take the title of Gym Leader FROM a reigning leader, you had to prove your mettle in battle against other trainers, beat them to get a token proving your merit, present that token to the elders, then be voted in.
Gym Leaders eventually began to go head to head with each other for control of a region, both as a grab for power before the elders came into play, and as a point of pride—"My town is clearly the better one, I beat you and I lead it." The champion of these tournaments got to rule the region, but the Elite Four was established to keep them in check as a council similar to the elders' rule.
Everyday people wanted to fight for the Champion seat too, leading to the formation of Leagues. In order to earn the right to fight the Champion, you had to beat every Gym Leader in the region that had fought for their ranking (or their champions), present the tokens as proof of your victory to the E4, then be evaluated by the E4 before you fought the Champ. As time went on, the evaluation became a battle unto itself, to see how the prospective trainer adapted to pressure.
As time went on and the Leagues got more repute, rules were finalized. You didn't need every town's token, just the highest ranking 8. You had to fight the E4 and the Champion in succession with a single team. The loser of any fight had to pay the winner a wager decided before the battle. Referees were established. Gym Leaders began making tests for their gyms pre-battle, to weed out those they personally didn't want ascending to a leadership position.
Congratulations. You now have a sport.
Era of Electricity: With the rise of electricity, the old system slowly fell out of favor. Elders and Gym Leaders no longer ruled, instead the governance coming from councils, law enforcement, and companies, all vying for power, tying everything up in bureaucratic tape, paying for their ideas to be implemented, controlling supply lines and vetoing decisions in interest of the whole, etc, all without Pokémon battles. However, people would riot if their favorite spectator sport was thrown away, so Gyms were relegated to sport only, and allowed to continue running so long as they stayed out of leadership's way.
Note: This isn't saying that the Gym system was better, just that the new systems were such a stark departure from tradition that it caused unrest. It was too much, too new, too fast, and was destined to fail.
Rise of Teams: The fall of Gyms made a power vacuum and left many people unsatisfied with how convoluted and non-traditional current leadership was. Teams rose up under their own "strongest one rules" mentality, claiming that part of their culture that the then-modern world was so ready to discard. Teams could be based on anything from a willingness to do good, to grievances, to charisma, to criminal activity, anything went. The biggest common thread among them was a promise of anonymity, as uniforms protected the identities of everyone but the admins.
Teams, as a whole, didn't view themselves as criminals, but as revolutionaries. They kept their own internal order under the 6-Pokémon rule, and respectfully bowed out to those that managed to beat them.
Note: This is my explanation for the general attitude towards Teams. Rocket, Aqua/Magma, Skull, and Yell are all very different beasts, but they all have uniforms that allow for anonymity and are all counter to established culture in their own way. Team doesn't mean criminal, but it CAN.
Silph Co.: The Silph Co. invented the fast, cheap, reliable, mass-produced Pokéball. Anyone could catch anything, no matter the age, no matter how strong the monster. Teams flocked to this, leading to a strong conflict as the leadership attempted to cut down on it. Instances of poaching, environmental imbalance, and invasive Pokémon skyrocketed, as Pokémon were removed from their native habitats in too many numbers to be sustainable. At the Sinjoh border, Sinnoh and Johto both tried to claim the territory with hopes of researching the legendaries it was tied to in order to control the world. This exploded into multi-regional war, riots, and civil strife.
Note: This is about the Pokémon War that Surge mentioned in R/B/G/Y, where the big theory for awhile was that that's where all the dads went. I like to think of it as a big, catastrophic, near-post-apocalyptic event that affected everyone.
Note: This isn't when the Pokéball itself was invented (that was based on Westwood's research in Celadon City, Kanto 70 years before R/B/G/Y). Rather, this is when it was both mass-produced and insanely popular. I like to think the prototype was invented 70 years pre-PKMN, then took 20 years to get proper manufacturing in line, then across another 20 got massively popular. It culminated in war towards the end of this boom in popularity.
The End of the War: Everyone's retreated to their home regions, with casualties too high to count. With the drastic dip in population, support, and power, most of the old leaderships dissolved, with only the strongest companies (primarily Silph Co.) surviving the crash. IDs were issued to anyone who had Pokémon in order to hold them accountable for damage their Pokémon did. You were only legally allowed to start catching Pokémon at 10 years old, and you went to school for Pokémon training until age 14. League Leadership was dusted off, polished, and revived. Badges were used to limit who could buy the more powerful Silph Co. Pokéballs, to prove those who had them had the knowledge to tame the Pokémon they caught. Pokémon Centers were erected in all major towns, and Pokémon Professors were hired to teach young people about Pokémon, research the monsters to better understand how they work, and study the magic that fuels them.
Note: The 10y/o & 14y/o rule is to account for the old rule of getting your license at 10 years old vs the newer games pegging it at 14, as well as the nebulous presence of Pokémon schools. You can own one at 10, but you've gotta go to school until 14. Additionally, though it doesn't really fit into the history lessons, I think pre-schoolers can get junior licenses which let them take care of a Pokémon with supervision, even though it's not officially registered to them.
The above rules remain in place. Gambling on Pokémon fights is still common, and it's the most reliable way to earn money outside of a location-based job. Young trainers who want to buy things patrol well-traveled routes, scouting for other trainers to make money off of and leading to a joke that making eye contact is enough to merit a challenge from one of the pesky little guys.
Bonus: Etymology In-World
Originally Monster: Creature that can use magic, usually terrifying Monster Ball: Capsule made from an apricorn to contain a monster Pocket Monster: Creature that's been captured in a Monster Ball
Monster Ball → Pocket Ball: Use the Pocket Ball to catch yourself a Pocket Monster. Makes sense. Pocket Monster → Pocket-mon → Pokémon: Simplification. A monster becomes a Pokémon on capture
Pocket Ball → Pokéball: Pokéball to catch Pokémon Pokémon: Creature that can use magic and can be caught in a Pokéball. Does not need to already have been captured
Pokémon and Monster got conflated as the word evolved, now "monster" is like calling a dog a "canine;" technically correct, but not used in common vernacular to refer to the thing.

Let’s goooooooooo
How about some theme based gym leader S/O headcanons, Authors choice on characters, go wild, feel free to make them yandere if you’d like just have fun with this one!
- Pierced Anon
Anything for you broski! I used this opportunity to write about less loved characters. ^^
-
-
💙Blue💙
- Power couple? Power couple! With Blue’s history with being a champion and a gym leader, aside from being a legend, you two are THE power couple.
- The finale gym leader to beat, strong with your typing, and strong in your theme, with your very loving boyfriend who stops by to cheer you on.
- I’m so sorry if you are a dark or ghost type gym leader, with your dark and spooky aesthetics. Blue is going to be in your gym, bright clothes, looking so out of place, as he acts as your personal cheerleader.
- “That’s right! That’s my partner! Heh, aren’t they just amazing?”
- He posts a fair bit online, and respects if you don’t want to have pictures of you posted. But he does have an entire slumber dedicated to you, and of you and your Pokémon training.
- He will make memes of the trainers you defeat, cause he’s recording the whole match, and some expressions or moments are just too funny not to!
- Buys or produces all sorts of merch themed around you, to show his love and support of his honey!
- Plus, Blue makes the perfect sparring partner. He changes up his teams, has good strategies, strong well trained Pokémon, battling against him easily prepares you for others.
- He accidentally ruins you for normal challengers, cause not many pose as much of a challenge as your boyfriend does.
- Be careful and watch which pokeballs you pick up! There have been several times you grabbed the wrong one, and brought one of his Pokémon to work instead.
- Though his Pokémon like you, so they were at least chill. You, however, we’re not chill-
-
👻Morty👻
- another match up! You two are quick to become a hot topic, and what most want in a relationship.
- Morty is so relaxed, so calm, but so attentive and caring, loving to hear you talk about work.
- Meanwhile you’re just opposite enough to complete him, being everything he needs and wants in a lover. Especially with the job!
- You being a gym leader is relieving, as you’ll understand his complaints, or comments on how he can improve his gym, or train.
- And since he’s a gym leader too, he can help you out a lot more than most could!
- Half the time he only had to say one word, and you’ll completely understand what he’s talking about. He loves it!
- He likes surprising you at work, when he’s in his lunch break, or day off. He’s stealthy without even realizing it, and sneaks up on everyone, scaring the daylights out of challengers and employees alike.
- But, while a subtle change, you’ll notice how his smile softens, and eyes brighten at the sight of you, as he walks over with a lunch box in hand for you.
- You both have hectic schedules, with managing your respective gyms, meetings, and taking care of the gyms upkeep. But Morty makes all the time he care for you. He’s always stopping by.
- He’s scared trainers, cause sometimes he’s the first person they will see, and think they are at the wrong gym. Only for you to pop up and greet them, making the trainer sigh in relief.
- It’s pretty common knowledge around Johto that you’re with Morty, even new people are quick to find out. Especially since you steal his scarf every chance you get.
- But Morty likes it when you steal his clothes, he thinks it’s so cute.
- He’s a decent person to train against too! He’s the fourth gym leader, and his ghosts come with a good amount of power.
- But he’s never upset when he loses, in fact he’s happy to cause that means he gets to give you kisses, for winning of course.
-
♠️Grimsley♦️
- this man is constantly texting you to come down to the league, just so he can get his affection, but shhh he’ll never admit it and call you the needy one.
- Both of you live pretty busy lives, but mostly you, as Grimsley mainly just sits and waits for a challenger. So you get many calls and texts from him, as you work.
- He likes face timing you and watching you battle, he likes seeing the show you put in at work. He’s your number one fan from the shadows.
- Though everyone knows.
- He’s more salty about the other league members and champion adoring you, cause they have told him if you two ever break up, they are taking your side.
- He was more offended they even thought of you two breaking up! How rude!
- His Pokémon are babies for you, and you’ve taken his Krookodile to work, cause she wouldn’t stop following you, and would sulk when you’d tell her to go back. So you were stuck with an oversized lizardy lillipup for most of the day, your challengers found it hilarious.
- Until Grimsley called you, asking for his Pokémon back.
- “Babe, I’d love to give her back to you, but you’re gonna have come down here and get her yourself. She’s cuddling me right now.”
- “Oh of course, when my Pokémon want to cuddle is ‘oh of course sweet baby’ but when I want to cuddle it’s ‘no Grimsley, you bite too much.’ How cruel.”
- “Grimmy, sweetie, I know you bite to show affection, but your teeth are sharp and biting my forearm isn’t very sexy of you.”
- Yes, these types of conversations happen regularly.
- He’s fun to train with, however he will be making it a bet, mainly cause if kisses are on the table he is not going easy, he wants his kisses damn it.

I've been going feral with some world building that I plan to use for a number of future fics, and after the loving encouragement of some of the people in a discord I favor, I've decided to write up a big lore drop post. Partly so other people can use said lore and partly so I don't have to reestablish it every time I want to use it for a different fic.
In this universe, Nuzlocke is a way of describing the danger inherent to a region. There are Nuzlocke regions and Union regions. Union regions have leagues that abide by Union standards, varying rules to protect both trainers and their Pokémon.
Nuzlocke regions are characterized by increased odds of death and bodily harm to Pokémon participating in battles, both against trainers and wild Pokémon. The Pokémon in these regions tend to be more dangerous and as a result the trainers tend to be a lot more vicious during fights. Where as trainers in Union regions can trust one another to a certain extent, Nuzlocke trainers cannot trust each other not to permanently harm or cripple their Pokémon and fight according, ironically leading to more injuries.
By contrast, the Union provides a number of different services to Union abiding regions. First and foremost is medical aid, care in Union regions typically far outpacing Nuzlocke regions. Additionally, the Union acts as a separate legal force not associated with the League and as such can prosecute trainers for excessive amounts of force. The Union also helps with controlling and monitoring wild populations of Pokémon. Powerful trainers are sent out to capture exceptionally aggressive Pokémon (raid mons for example!) to remove them from the breeding pool and curate a calmer wild Pokémon population. The Union also helps in population maintenance which is why a trainer can catch as many Pokémon as they please in union regions as opposed to Nuzlocke regions that limit one capture per route to maintain a healthy population of wild Pokémon.
A region doesn't immediately become a Union region when the league joins the Union itself. There's a set of criteria that needs to be met before a region looses its Nuzlocke status, and it's possible for regions to slip back into Nuzlocke status if the league is inattentive. This points out perhaps the biggest difference between Union Champions and Nuzlocke Champions. In Nuzlocke regions there is only ever one champion. They are the end all be all of strength and remain in power until a stronger champion beats them. They hold an immense amount of sway but their rule is de facto. Union regions can have multiple champion "ranked" trainers who receive a number of benefits for their ranking but only have one primary Champion that is the acting leader for the region itself. The goal of these Champions is to act as guides and protectors for their region, and the role can be passed over at any time to another suitable Champion ranked trainer.
For trainers wishing to swap regions that have different classifications there are a number of rules and regulations regarding Pokémon. Nuzlocke caught Pokémon cannot leave a Nuzlocke region without special testing and certifications proving the Pokémon in question isn't a threat and that the trainer knows how to use reasonable force in battles be they wild or trainer. It is possible for trainers moving to Union regions to obtain licenses for force but these are only applicable when used against dangerous wild Pokémon, again such as raid mons.
Both Nuzlocke and Union regions provide licenses for trainers to carry more than six Pokémon at a time, but only a maximum of six Pokémon can ever be used during a singular battle. In Union regions this rule typically only exists for the sake of ride Pokémon or service Pokémon but Nuzlocke trainers have been known to use this rule to keep multiple battle ready teams on their person, especially more powerful trainers.
Region Specific Lore and Worldbuilding
Kanto/Johto: Kanto and Johto due to proximity have remained consistently linked in terms of status, sharing a singular league between the two. During the course of Red and Blue it was still a Nuzlocke region but has long since joined the Union the term only just barely still applied. Immediately after during the time in which Lance was coming into power as champion, the join regions were finally declared officially Union.
Hoenn: Before the Union was officially recognized, Hoenn had a proto-union of sorts due in large part to the existence of contests. Nuzlocke rulings were often contradictory to what contests necessitated and the death of popular contest Pokémon could often cause large scale upset. The transfer to Union ruling was exceptionally easy for Hoenn and it's been Union ever since.
Sinnoh: To this day, Sinnoh is still a Nuzlocke region and you can thank Cynthia for that. She is not actively malicious, but she isn't particularly kind either. She loves her own team but has no special care for other trainers Pokémon which has inspired a similar disposition in the rest of the region. Cynthia has shown no signs of wanting to become a Union regulated region and because of this Sinnoh is something of a safe haven for trainers who prefer Nuzlocke ruling.
Unova: Until recently, Unova was a Nuzlocke region. During Alder's younger days he was a trainer who sought strength, which was encouraged. When he lost his partner it was a wake up call. Between that and the rise of Team Plasma, the region began to shift priorities and during the end of his time as Champion, Alder began the framework to get the region union recognized. By the events of B2W2, the region is already officially Union status having historically been one of the fastest regions to meet the requirements outside of the founders.
Kalos: Kalos has a complicated history due to the actions of Team Flare. While regarded as a Union region for most of the time the Union has existed, the actions of Team Flare managed to cause the region to slip into Nuzlocke classifications temporarily before the region was brought back under control. The awakening of the legends in X and Y caused a surge of more violent and powerful Pokémon that had to be quelled, though the situation was rather quickly rectified.
Alola: Alola itself is a difficult topic due to how young its actual league is. It lacked a champion until very recently and because of that it was also a Nuzlocke region, lacing any Union presence as well. Because of this, Alola is up there as one of the most dangerous regions alongside Sinnoh. Upon receiving a champion the league immediately got to work trying to get the region up to Union standards but it's been a long and slow process as a lot of trainers have been resisting the change.
Galar: Galar is one of the oldest Union regions, having helped to establish the union as a present force. This can especially be seen in the fact that the role of Champion for this region has been split into two, with a powerful active Champion to take care of threats and the role of Chairman filling in for the bureaucratic duties that Champions in other regions would also shoulder.
Paldea: Paldea is a long standing Union region, however, the existence of Paradox Pokémon poses a certain degree of threat. As long as they remain in the great crater then the region as a whole remains up to Union standards and Area Zero can be carefully monitored. If the Paradox Pokémon begin escaping however... Well, Union regions can be reclassified as Nuzlocke if they stop meeting all necessary standards.

hello....tell me about your trainer oc........
Hello my dear pal and friend it’s rambling time
- Krys started their Pokémon journey around when they just turned 16, and age throughout their travels. They’re 22 by the end of their time in Paldea.
- Though trainers typically start traveling at age ten, Krys and their neighbor Laurel (Laurel Oak. It’s supposed to be the Kanto rival. :3), spent that time with Professor Oak to work on building the first digital pokedex.
- Krys kinda sorta released their Johto team as well as their partner, Aurora, at the end of their Johto journey in order to protect the legendary beasts. Over the years those pokemon passed their roles onto local wild pokemon, and one by one returned to Pallet Town for Krys to visit again.
- Aurora the eevee on the other hand, stayed behind until she met a trainer named Adam with a dragonite. Aurora decided to help him earn the indigo league badges, and then she met up with Krys after they participated in the Hoenn League conference. Aurora, as Adam’s pokemon at the time, battled against Krys’ Hoenn team during the preliminary rounds.
- Krys’ mom lives in Pallet Town, working as a pokemon nurse. Their father is Norman, who moved to Hoenn to run his gym in Petalburg after inheriting it from his mother. Krys’ paternal aunt moved from Kanto to Hoenn, and they helped her move, which is how they ended up there.
- Also Archie and Maxie are unofficially now their uncles. Krys has no say in the matter. Ingo and Emmet too. When Krys became drinking age they all became good drinking buddies.
- Krys can understand Pokémon. You can imagine how interesting it was when they met N.
- Officially owns and trains legendary pokemon, but only two: a Latias named Artemis and Miraidon named Harley. Mew and Mewtwo are very good friends of Krys, and they respect that they both wish to remain wild pokemon.
- Is canonically not a virgin. Good for them. Good for them.
- If Krys were a pokemon, they’d be a shiny riolu!
- Krys took on a big sibling role to Arven, Nemona, and Penny (who I hc as being 17, 16, and 13 respectively). However, Krys is around the height of the player character of ScVi. Short king fr.
- In Paldea, they worked alongside Jacq as his assistant teacher, though they also traveled around the region whenever they weren’t scheduled to assist. Fine by them, as it gave them time to help with Miraidon, Arven, Team Star, and try the Gym Challenge of this region. The Paldea league is the first, and so far only, time that they’ve made it to a champion rank trainer.
- They also had traveling companions just like Ash did in the anime, although these are more OCs rather than canon characters. Although journeying through Galar, Krys went along with Hop to look out for him while he did the gym challenge, with Krys having a supportive mentor role.
- I’ve mentioned this before, but Krys’ travels only last ten years. Professor Oak retires around this time, and Krys comes back to Kanto, being handed the title of Pokémon Professor.
There’s more fun facts and stuff I wanna talk about but I’m not coming up with anything else atm shdjdbd. I have like. Their whole journey planned out and most of what happens during them. tysm for this pal it is really great to ramble fr
