I think one of the many reasons I love Callum is how emotionally literate he is. It's common to see the boy in a relationship being completely clueless about how the girl is feeling but he is so empathetic and gets Rayla so easily… plus cries and shows his emotions being very tied with the love narrative‚ peak male character writing.

When people go through something traumatic, oftentimes they may change their hair, whether it be dye or cutting it short. When I first saw this end credit of Ethari, I noticed his hair looked longer, but taking a second look I’ve realized that Ethari SHAVED half of his head. Even in Through the Moon, which was years ago when Rayla was young, Ethari’s hair has stayed the same. Now, half his hair is long, like Runaan’s was, and half of it is just about gone, just like his heart is gone.
I know the creators most likely wanted to change his hair because of the time skip, but considering that Ethari is in mourning, I think it’s definitely something worth analyzing. Plus, we’ve seen characters keep the same style, such as Villads and Nyx, I think the creators did this to show that those particular characters haven’t changed. Villads is the same pirate, Nyx is the same trickster. Ethari has changed.
And he’s still wearing the horns cuffs I’m dying-

My Roman Empire is thinking how Rayllum would be now if Rayla hadn't left.
(You can stop to read if you want, the next will be just me rambling about scenarios that could've happened)
They would've been together two years by now, imagine the possibilities.
They could've gone to travel to Xadia, picture Rayla giving a tour to Callum in the most gorgeous places.
And the opposite, Callum taking Rayla to the most incredible places in Katolis, and sharing memories of his childhood.
Would they plus Ezran would've gone to the winter lodge? Just to show Rayla how beautiful it was during winter. Would they have built a snowman/elf? Play in the snow? Also, take Zym with them?
Would Rayla be part of the royal guard instead of the dragon guard? Would she be part of the royal council like Callum?
What would Rayla wear? Would she like to wear dresses?
Will they talk about the future and what they want from it?
Would Rayla be considered a princess?

I couldn’t help but use the dragon prince as the show they watch while cuddling because it’s one of my favorites right now and if you’ve watched you should understand my comparisons, if you haven’t watched it I highly recommend, it has such diversity and has the same feel as Avatar the Last Airbender, plus there are a bunch of easter eggs for atla because one of the creators was also a writer and producer on Avatar. Dating Yuta has been a dream come true. He is the sweetest guy I have ever met and it feels like he understands me better than anyone. It’s almost like he can sense when I’m having a bad day because today he suggested that we skip hanging out with our friends to just stay in and watch one of my favorite shows. So, that's exactly what we are doing right now, we’er cuddled up on my bed with a bowl of skittles on my lap watching The Dragon Prince on netflix.
I just really enjoy laying with him and commenting on the little jokes each character makes or judging Viren for being a horrible father. We also like to try and figure out which character reminds us of each other and our friends, that’s the current debate we are having.
“There is no way Toge is Claudia, if anything he’s Zym. Because one, he can’t talk, and two he likes to cause trouble. I don’t think any of our friends are evil enough to be Claudia.” I said completely flabbergasted that he would insinuate that our best friend would be able to do such horrid things to people and animals.
He laughed and said “I wasn’t saying that because I think he’s evil or something, I was saying it because in the first few seasons Claudia is a complete dork, yeah she sucks for doing dark magic but she does dumb stuff as well. Anyway, now that we have Inumaki picked, who would Maki be? I personally think Rayla is an exact copy of her; they would both roll their eyes and slap someone for being an idiot.”
I chuckled at his defense, “I completely agree. Maki is also too stubborn to ask for help when she really needs it. Panda is Ezran, I will not accept any argument, he understands Toge and encourages his dumb behaviors.” I started with no room for argument. “Also you are Soren, don't try to fight it, that's my final decision and I'm sticking to it.”
“W-what how am I Soren?” My boyfriend looked at me obviously confused by my statement. “I’m not disagreeing, I’m just curious why you think that.”
“Well for one you both use swords to fight. But most importantly, you are both extremely kind in spite of the fact you have both been through a lot. Soren spent years being gaslite by his father into doing horrible things, and when he tried to make his sister see it she also tried to gaslight him. Once he finally realized his family was doing horrible things he made the hard choice to leave them and change for the better. Now I’m not saying you have the same past but I know you struggled and suffered for a while. Having Rika lash out everytime something even came close to threatening you and not understanding it had to have been difficult, but instead of giving up, you decided to keep fighting and try and make it so no one else has to go through what you did.” I pointed out the major similarities between the two swordsmen. “Also I think you are both adorable.”
He just watched amazed by my reasoning, thinking I was just gonna say it was because they both use swords and are dorks, but no it was like I had thought about this alot. “I-i- Wow, you’ve thought about that a lot haven’t you?” he asked with a light blush.
I smiled up at him. “ Yeah I have, you have been through a lot and I'm proud of you for it. Now the most important question, what character am I?” I asked, trying to see his brain work.
“Oh definitely Bait.” He said confidently as I looked at him in shock.
“Excuse me, I just gave a college dissertation level speech on why I think you are a handsome swordsman, and all I get is a toad.” I said sitting up and turning to fully face him.
“Well yeah you are both adorable when you’re grumpy, both love shiny things, and you have a massive sweet tooth.” He said, defending his choice, reaching to try and pull back to lay with him. I begrudgingly layed back down resting my head on his chest, I felt his arm wrap around my shoulders as he placed a kiss to the top of my head. “Now shush, one of your favorite moments is coming up.”
I just nodded and snuggled closer to his side as I turned to watch as general Amya accidentally ruined her own engagement. I always find it funny, like yeah I get wanting to propose in a flashy way but seriously. Amya is a high ranked general who doesn't seem like someone who enjoys random surprises, what else would you expect to happen ambushing her with what look like flaming whips. I chuckled at the scene before closing my eyes, just enjoying the time I get to spend cuddling Yuta. I whispered a quiet “I Love you” as I drifted off to sleep.
Right as I let sleep take over, I heard Yuta respond with his “I love you too” before we both feel asleep to the sounds of dragons, elves, and magic.

Is it just me or does the narrative seem a bit biased in Rayla’s favor? For instance, I was genuinely happy when Amaya called her out for leaving Callum behind but then she goes “you remind me of myself”. Plus she apologizes for assuming Rayla was evil when they first met “just because she was an elf” when Rayla was also part of the assassins who killed her brother in law. It feels like the narrative is preventing characters from being too negative towards her.
I don’t think the narrative is so much biased towards Rayla as much as it is that some of the fandom is biased toward Rayla.
Sure, the narrative veers away from being too negative toward Rayla, but it also extends similar levels of grace toward Callum and Ezran. Amaya may not be as confrontational toward Rayla as one would hope, but Ez handed an entire kingdom on a silver platter to a defeated Viren, yet the narrative seemingly goes right past that. Dark magic is considered so evil that Xadia engaged in ethnic cleansing in response, yet when Callum does it Rayla never confronts him directly about this.
That’s not to say that the story doesn’t treat these characters as nuanced and complex. It certainly does, and Rayla is no exception. In fact, her moral dubiousness—watching her pursue noble ends through questionable means like stealing and lying—is one of the best things about her. She’s a rogue at heart, even when on Team Good Guys. She’s devoted and loyal to her friends and loved ones (you might not know this, but ToX outright states that Devotion is Rayla’s most important value), and sometimes that leads her to walk the line between right and wrong (as in TTM).
Yet because she’s also many fans’ wish fulfillment character, they see this as a personal attack and accuse people of misogyny simply for recognizing her flaws. Or they cope by assigning Rayla’s negative traits to Callum (who is his own hot mess, thank you very much). And it’s sad because these people are missing out on an interesting character simply because they want Rayla to be so awesome at everything that her only flaws are that she’s too awesome…and she’s scared of water.

Welcome back to another episode of Cassidy making spontaneous AUs: the Werellum au
I’ll probably try to make a better name for the au later lol
But essentially in this au, Callum using dark magic then arcanum magic almost instantly messes with his not-built-for-all-these-opposing-magic-forces-at-once human self a bit. Nothing really happens besides feathers growing in his hair for a while til Rayla leaves and next thing he knows, he’s a phoenix sometimes now. Unstable genes go brr
In bird form he can’t speak human at all so Ez acts as a translator if he wants to say things (which he regularly does).
As for the rest of the main cast, Soren has mixed feelings mostly consisting of confusion but he eventually warms up to the new form though continually refers to him as a tall chicken. He has stuck to that running joke for 2 entire years.
The rest of the katolis castle staff.. can’t really say the same. Quite a few of them are unhappy but they’ve been sworn to secrecy abt it for Callum’s safety (plus to avoid encouraging of hate towards zadia since like, they just started to fix that)
Havn’t thought abt how the aaravos gang would feel abt this tbh.
Anyways, When Rayla returns as normal in s4, he’s in phoenix mode asleep in his room and panics, but eventually Ezran appears and fills her in on what’s going on.
Callum tries to assure Rayla a lot that the whole phoenix thing wasn’t triggered because of her running away, and that it’s just magic weirdness, but she knows it’s too well timed to not make sense and feels quite guilty because of it.

Leola - Startouch elves and Unicorns.
I'm a big fan of the Leola is Aaravos' daughter theory, and as I was making a different post I had one of those what ifs that went weird places. Plus, there's a lot of speculation about shapeshifting unicorns because the child Startouch elf holding the Leola's Last Wish in the star map is confirmed to be Leola, who is also mentioned as a unicorn in Tales of Xadia handbook.
So, this theory is full blown tinfoil hat.
Here's a unicorn as depicted in Puzzle House. They have a diamond blaze under their horn. Aaravos' conjured horse also has diamond blade, but hornless. Notice that the shape is the close to Aaravos' missing chest piece, his "white heart".
From the Death of the Immortal poem;
Kazi: "...and though undying, took last breath, immortal Laurelion was no more."
Callum: That's good, right? I mean, when someone "was no more," that-that's dead, yeah?
Kazi: It's a bit confusing, but that is the clearest implication. Though, it is somewhat odd they call them undying and immortal.
Callum: Well, that doesn't sound so immortal? Laurelion "was no more." Right. But how? How did they...?
Kazi: Right here. "White as the star's heart it pierced, ivory draconic brought death's bite known ever forth as Novablade."
Callum: It's a sword. A weapon that can end a Startouch Elf's mortal existence. The weapon. We did it. We found the answer.
(ivory draconic - wonder if that's a reference to the star dragon bone mentioned in a legend in ToX).
So, here comes the wild speculation part...
What if "took last breath" and [Leola's] "Last Wish" are connected? What if Startouch elves lose their immortality because they have massive amounts of power drawn out of them (aka last breath) by the Novablade to perform a "great wish." What if the drawing takes a twisted form that solidifies, erupting from their heart piece...
And the Startouch is transformed into a unicorn who can die, with the horn being the mark of their final wish.
Why unicorns? Well, part of it's the western fantasy familiarity with unicorns and pure-heartedness. I think only pure hearted Startouch were selected for this...
Going with this, as a child Leola was stabbed with the Novablade, which created the brightest star in the sky - Leola's Last Wish. Now, I think this has something to do with the "heavens" the Startouch elves disappeared to. Using Leola's sacrificed immortality the Startouch created a cosmic home for themselves, which Aaravos ends up getting cast out of.
But what if this isn't just Leola, what if this is just how Startouch effect the world and every unicorn was created this way. Using a (star?) dragon bone blade to sacrifice a pure hearted child's immortal future in order to benefit the greater community. Maybe that's how primal magic was created from deep magic - a child's wish to make life better for others. Unicorns are described as "selfless" - a most cherished value in elf culture.
Take Rayla's example. Doing her duty to her community, by giving up her family, by risking her life to keep others safe, by doing the unpleasant tasks while trying to save other that burden, that's what she's been taught is love. She's sent on a dangerous mission at 15 to reclaim honor and help lift herself out of the shame of her parent's failure - when she had nothing to do with it. She has to prove she's worthy to Silvergrove. When she fails in her duty to her community, she loses their love and is castout.
Extrapolate to a culture where the greatest act of love is sacrificing your forever.
But if Leola is Aaravos' daughter, he probably was less than pleased she lost her immortality just so others could live the life. Even if everyone else praised and honored her, he still lost her. She's depicted as uniquely kind amongst unicorns and he may have felt the others took advantage of her great empathy - and being just a kid. Even if she volunteered, he would have felt the culture pressured her. He might despise the whole practice and culture that benefits from it.
Which makes his action with Sparklepuff more of a dark mirror held up against Startouch practices. Deliberately creating a child purely for sacrificial purpose to benefit from their power is evil... so how can a culture justify brainwashing children to get the same result?
(Kinda headcanoning Leola as a bit of a mash-up of Rayla and Ezran).
Then Leola became humanity's helper, gifting the people of Elarion primal stones and knowledge of primal magic, which led to some learning primal magic, and the Elarion culture flourishing. This appears to have gone against Startouches' warning and to have eventually incurred the Startouches' ire - at least according to Aaravos, who obliques says in Ripple short story that the Startouch killed all the human primal mages by dropping a small star (implied to be Aaravos) and creating the Sea of the Castout. Another slight against Leola that Aaravos may feel the need to rectify, on top of them casting him out. Que introduction of dark magic, plans of vengeance against Startouch etc.
So this theory is pretty out there, as it's not really based off much - Leola on star map & mentioned in ToX, weird wording in the Death of the Immortal poem, odd observation about Aaravos' horse, that only those of pure heart can see the unicorn map, and the "self-sacrificing for duty is love" nature of elf culture. But it was mentioned in an interview that most of Aaravos motivation stems from his relationship with an individual, and losing a daughter to elf culture's emphasis on self-sacrifice that mainly benefits those he finds unworthy of such love? I kinda like it as a motivation.
(Side note, kinda feel Aaravos is making a dig for his own amusement with his mount looking like a hornless unicorn, given that he doesn't have a white heart to stab and isn't pure hearted anyway. Plus, some stuff about why Aaravos is pleased about a unicorn horn being used in the Weapon of Vengeance spell, but that gets off topic so I might come back to that later).

Voilà enfin fini mon nouveau comic Rayllum avec cette fois ci, un cauchemar de Rayla mais Callum est là pour veiller sur elle. A la base il y avait deux scènes que j'ai pas mit au final, la première est pendant la crise de panique de Rayla, Callum fait toujours le truc avec le pouls mais descend sa main vers sa coeur. Pour qu'elle puisse sentir ses battements puis l'allonger en lui demandant de se concentrer sur lui et sur sa voix. Au final j'ai opté pour autre chose qui on va dire plus réaliste même si je pourrais toujours placer ça ailleurs. La deuxième scène c'est qu'après la discussion du duo, Callum était censé jeter un coup d'oeil à l'arc de Rayla. Pensant aux dernières paroles de Claudia jusqu'à ce qu'il sente la main de Rayla et lui dise qu'il aime quand elle le touche s'en suit Rayla qui l'entoure dans ses bras pour se réchauffer. Je trouvais déjà que ça traînait en longueur et même si j'ai pu mettre le câlin, j'espère que je pourrais mettre la scène de l'arc sur un autre dessin ou bien un one shot par exemple.
At last I've finished my new Rayllum comic, this time featuring Rayla's nightmare, but Callum is there to watch over her. The first is during Rayla's panic attack. Callum still does the pulse thing, but lowers his hand to his heart. So she can feel his heartbeat, then lay her down and ask her to concentrate on him and his voice. In the end, I opted for something more realistic, even if I could always place it elsewhere. The second scene is that, after the duo's discussion, Callum was supposed to take a look at Rayla's bow. Thinking about Claudia's last words until he felt Rayla's hand and told her he liked it when she touched him, followed by Rayla wrapping her arms around him for warmth. I already felt it was dragging on and even though I was able to put in the hug, I hope I could put the bow scene in another drawing or a one-shot for example.

Callum : Rayla, in those two years, we created our own path. We've moved forward and sometimes lost our way, but we keep going. Because we want to achieve our goals. And we've done things for ourselves. Because we thought it was the right thing to do. But also for others, so that they can live in a better day. And finally, so that we can grieve properly. But you have the choice of reuniting with them. You shouldn't waste it when the opportunity is there. You could have continued your hunt. And yet you've come back to us.
Rayla : There are so many things I could have done better. So many things I haven't told you about my two years without you all. Even with Stella, I felt so alone. I was so cold and had nothing. I wish I could have stayed with all of you for those two years. I regret it but I'm here now and I want to stay by your side.
Callum : Rayla, you've always had a place with us. Even when you're reunited with them, that won't change. I promise!
Rayla : You always find the words to soothe me. They are magic! They make me feel able to face anything. You bewitched me and I've always been under your spell. So I can only love you more.

Honestly, seeing the progression of rayllum never fails to make me smile. I love how it starts off as Rayla wanting to try and finish what she couldn’t do, but when meeting Callum (and later Ezran as well), she puts it all to the side to help them return the egg and stop the war.
To think, it all started when Rayla tried to complete the mission of assassinating King Harrow and Prince Ezran. Even if she was hesitant and didn’t want to do it, I still love how Callum was willing to put his own life at risk if it meant keeping his little brother safe.
And after they find the egg, then they are on a new quest: a chance to end the war.
Seeing Callum and Rayla interact throughout season 1 was one of the cutest things ever! It was nice seeing them develop a bond, even though they had their ups and downs such as their confrontation with Amaya or the egg almost dying after it was dropped into an ice lake.
But the next season, we got even more Callum and Rayla bonding, and even some cute moments shared between them like hugs, hand on shoulder and even the one moment where Rayla nearly confesses to Callum when he’s suffering from the effects of dark magic.
And then we get to season 3, which is peak rayllum! Honestly, I could go into a whole talk about all the moments they shared, but keeping it brief, I love all their moments shared when Rayla is showing him through Xadia while also focusing on getting Zym back to his mother.
Even though Rayla discovered she was ghosted, felt like she has failed everyone, and felt cast out when at the Oasis after learning the truth from Ethari- Callum still standing by her and giving her reassurance melted my heart.
Like the scene on the ambler, where he tells Rayla that she’s a hero and goes on about how amazing she is- I literally squealed the first time in saw it! Plus the kiss after- SO CUTE!
And towards the end, seeing them hold hands and stick together- shows just how much they care about each-other!
But definitely the pinnacle moment had to be Callum activating the Manus Pluma Volantis spell to save Rayla after she tackled Viren off the spire. Just the way he tells her he loves him, and when she says it back- my heart melted and I was grinning wide!
“Because I love you, Rayla! I really do.”
“I love you too, Callum!”
In the end, seeing how they went from being enemies at first due to Rayla focusing on her mission, to developing a bond as they traveled together, to becoming close and even confessing their love for the other is something that I’ll never forget when watching TDP for the first time (and on subsequent rewatches as well)

Listen, the inevitable rematch between Runaan, Rayla, Ethari and Kimdael is going to be so epic. The final thing that Kimdael said to the trio is that if they ever get in her way again then they'll see the full extent of what she can do. So when they fight her again she won't be holding back.
And now Rayla's all grown up, fully trained as an assassin and has a couple years of experience as a warrior. She now has the ability to take on Kimdael in way she couldn't as a child. She's going to enter this battle side by side with Runaan in order to stop her once and for all. They're going to be fighting side by side, with Ethari's help as an archer from a distance.
Plus the callbacks to Bloodmoon Huntress, e.g. we're stronger together right?
Not to mention Kimdael recognising them and her anger at them getting in her way once again? If Kimdael believes that Runaan was dead then her shock at seeing him alive again will be interesting, as well as any taunts and goading that she flings his way. Not to mention what she says to get a rise out of Rayla once she realises that it's her, just all grown up. And what she say's to Ethari, the elf who managed to create an arrow that could wound her.
And then there's her knowledge of their past battle and how she uses it to gain an advantage over them
