FOTD #042 : pink oyster! (pleurotus djamor)
the pink oyster mushroom is a fungus in the family pleurotaceae. it is most commonly found in mexico, indonesia & places with similar climates !!
the big question : can i bite it??
YES :-) this fungus is edible & delicious. it is used in asian cooking. despite its choice edibility, it is rarely sold due to its 24h shelf life.
p. djamor description :
"the pink oyster mushroom, unsurprisingly, has a pink color. it has a curly cap which is 2 – 5 cm in diameter. the caps are also quite thin. the gills are long & pronounced. the stem is very short or even non existent."

I've got pink oysters fruiting in a newly set up fruiting chamber, which is working great :D
I highly recommend Pleurotus Djamor to beginners. I've played with culturing them quite a bit... multispore, isolation, cloning, etc,
They aren't picky, and they always want to make mushrooms ASAP, even in less than ideal conditions. I love these dudes.

Pink oyster mushrooms, Pleurotus djamor. Easy to grow and heat-tolerant, these are amazing for warm climates (or your countertop).

If you got to go to anushroom festival. What mushroom would you style an outfit after? 🍄🍄🍄
This question is tough but exciting!! It was hard to narrow it down, but I think I have some contestants :•)
Pixie's Parasol (Mycena interrupta)
Blue is very much NOT my color, but this shade is one of my favorites :•) I think these mushrooms look like shiny, aquamarine beads, or maybe some fun earrings!
Pink Oyster Mushroom (Pleurotus djamor)
Warm colors like this one are more my style! The gills of this mushroom remind me of the ruffles on a frilly shirt
Chanterelle (Cantharellus)
These look like some fun, wide-legged pants. Groovy!

The Empress. Art by Joseph Buckley, from The Mushroom Hunter's Tarot.
Here we have Pleurotus djamor, also known as the pink oyster mushroom. Oyster mushrooms are delicious, abundant, and easy to identify, making them popular among mushroom hunters of all skill levels. This pink variety prefers warm and humid conditions, and are most often found in tropical climates. They’re immensely popular in central Mexico, with the vast majority of locals able to identify them. Not only is this mushroom bountiful, growing in large clusters and bouquets, but they’re also easy to cultivate. Pink oyster growing kits are often sold at farmers markets due to their striking beauty and ease of use. Over one pound of mushrooms can be harvested from a single growing block!
