"Please please me" - The Beatles

1962 Written by Paul McCartney and John Lennon

An entry in Let's Do It, my personal favourite singles from 1954-76.

"Congratulations, gentlemen. You've just made your first No. 1."

Lennon's original arrangement featured a Roy Orbison-style vocal leap in the chorus, and was significantly slower than the song we know and love. Producer George Martin suggested they speed up the tune, put some harmonica in the mix, and add a second vocal line. That trick of diverging harmonies? Directly copied from "Cathy's clown".

It gave the young lads from Liverpool lots of firsts. First big hit single, hitting the top spot in early 1963. First television appearance, on Thank Your Lucky Stars. First song onto their album, first release stateside, and first record bought by Glasgow schoolboy James Gordon Brown.

Unlike that budding politician, The Beatles would bestride the world like a four-headed colossus. A seven-year reign as The World's Biggest Band begins here.

(I wore it in 1990 to a party. It was a Fifties party but I cheated and wore a Sixties suit. “The Beatles are the darlings of Merseyside. The little girls of Merseyside are so fiercely possessive about their Beatles that they forced Granada to put them on television, and they wouldn’t buy their first record in case they should become famous and go away to London and leave them. Fortunately others did buy it, and now they are buying the second one, ‘Please Please Me,’ at the rate of 50,000 a week. They are a vocal-instrumental group, three guitars and drums, and they don’t sound a bit like The Shadows, or anybody else for that matter. But I think it’s their looks that really get people going, that start the girls queuing outside the Liverpool Grafton at 5.30 for 8pm. Their average age is twenty and they have what their manager likes to call ‘exceptional taste in clothes.’ They look scruffy, but scruffy on purpose. […] John Lennon has an upper lip which is brutal in a devastating way. George Harrison is handsome, whimsical and untidy. Paul McCartney has a round baby face, while Ringo Starr is ugly but cute. (He’s called Ringo because he wears two on each hand.) ‘Their physical appearance,’ said my friend, who is a Liverpool housewife, ‘inspires frenzy. They look beat-up and depraved in the nicest possible way.’ They are very friendly and charming. They like each other and everybody else, and are seen around a good deal. Las canciones sin álbum: entre «Please Please Me» y «With The Beatles».

Si te estás introduciendo al mundo de The Beatles, es importante que conozcas que entre cada álbum, la banda lanzó fuera de ellos una gran variedad de sencillos. Puede suceder que si los escuchas cronológicamente y únicamente mediante los álbumes, te pierdas de estas canciones que tuvieron una gran relevancia en el desarrollo musical de la banda.

1. From Me to You

John Lennon y Paul McCartney compusieron la canción mientras viajaban en un micro, en medio de su gira como teloneros de Helen Shapiro en febrero de 1963. Lo consideraron su trabajo más profesional y pulido hasta el momento. «Ahí empezamos de verdad», recordaría McCartney.

En muchas de sus tempranas canciones tendían a usar pronombres en el estribillo como las palabras «I» («yo»), «me» («mi») y «you» («tú»), en una manera de hacerlas «más directas y personales».

Fue grabada el 5 de marzo de 1963 en los EMI Studios de Londres. En el lado B se incluyó «Thank You Girl».

2. Thank You Girl

El lado B de «From Me to You» expresaba la gratitud de los beatles hacia las mujeres de su publico.

Sabíamos que si componíamos una canción que se llamara «Thank You Girl», muchas de las fans que nos escribían cartas lo iban a tomar como un agradecimiento de verdad. Así que muchas de nuestras canciones... estaban dirigidas directamente a ellas. — Paul McCartney

La canción fue compuesta por el dúo Lennon/McCartney. Fue, al igual que «From Me to You», grabada el 5 de marzo de 1963 en los EMI Studios y publicada el 11 de abril de 1963.

3. She Loves You

La composición de «She Loves You» se inicia el 26 de junio de 1963, cuando en plena gira en Newcastle, antes de comenzar un show, Lennon y McCartney empezaron a componer la canción en dos camas gemelas de la habitación en la que se hospedaban. Terminaron la canción al día siguiente, en la casa paterna de Paul.

La narrativa en tercera persona de la canción fue realmente inusual para una canción de amor de la época. El narrador en la canción funcionaba como un emparejador entre dos amantes extraños. Esta idea fue atribuida por Lennon a McCartney en 1980:

La idea fue de Paul: en lugar de cantar una vez más 'I love you' ('te amo'), tuvimos en la canción un tercer protagonista. Este tipo de detalle se encuentra aún en sus trabajos en solitario; siempre escribirá una historia sobre alguien más. Yo me siento más inclinado a escribir sobre mí mismo. — John Lennon

Se trata del sencillo más vendido de The Beatles en el Reino Unido, y fue el sencillo más vendido en ese país durante su año de publicación.

4. I'll Get You

En el lado B de «She Loves You» se encontraba otra canción de la dupla Lennon/McCartney. John Lennon dijo acerca de esta canción en 1980:

'I'll Get You' es Paul y yo tratando de componer una canción... que no funcionó realmente bien. — John Lennon
