Breaking with Tradition at the 2018 L.A. Roadster Show & Swap

Many hot rodders have been looking forward to Father’s Day weekend for decades, the time of year devoted to a worldwide favorite: the L.A. Roadsters Show & Swap Meet. It has played a significant role in our hobby’s history thanks to the efforts of the L.A. Roadsters, a club that formed in 1957 and launched the event three years later. The show evolved into a well-oiled machine, with a huge swap meet, an area dedicated to hundreds of pre-’37 roadsters/cabriolets, a specialty parking area open to well over 1,000 pre-’78 automobiles, and dozens of professional vendors scattered across the show grounds.

Paul and Linda Mooney of Kernville, California, had Image Street Rods and Keith Vander Meulen restore their family relic built in 1949. Among this ’25 Ford track roadster’s claims to fame: gracing the pages of HOT ROD in January 1950. That same year, it also won first in class at the Oakland Roadster Show, better known as the Grand National Roadster Show today.

In 2017, John Buck and the team of Roadster Shows Inc., the same folks who put together the Grand National Roadster Show, took over the happening. They renamed it L.A. Roadster Show & Swap—that’s “Roadster” singular. It resulted in a new price structure for participants, including roadster owners, who until then were able to enter for free. Another major change took place this year, when Sunday was dropped from the schedule altogether. Shocking? Not really. Over the decades, Father’s Days have seen lighter foot traffic compared to Saturdays. It seems that some longtime hot rodders now prefer spending time visiting with their children and grandchildren on Sunday.

Remember the Ross Heale/Jack Foye Model T roadster pickup? It sparked many memories when appearing on the cover of HRD in May 2010. Raced extensively in So-Cal between 1958 and 1961, it set the national A/SR record at Bakersfield in 1960 (131 mph). A supercharged 1956 354ci Hemi gives it plenty of go. As a side note, the ’26 truck attended the very first L.A. Roadsters Show at the Hollywood Bowl in 1960.

The weekend of activities was therefore condensed to Friday and Saturday, with numerous vendors/swappers setting up early Thursday. While the weather has been brutally hot during the last few years, the 2018 edition proved very pleasant, making the LARS experience truly enjoyable. Considering this year’s smaller turnout, let’s hope our scene will support the show in larger numbers in 2019.

The idea of starting a series of front-engine dragsters in front of the crowd, aka “Cacklefest,” has been a tradition at Famoso Raceway’s California Hot Rod Reunion since 2000. Other events, not necessarily 100-percent drag related, have adopted this cacophony of V8s over time too, including the L.A. Roadster Show. This year’s affair gathered half a dozen historic rails.

The crew of Retro Rods, Inc. (Monroe, Washington) had the luck of purchasing this Hemi-powered ’31 Ford roadster, built by Irving Landing while in college in California. They restored it close to its 1956 configuration, when it first hit the street. An engineer who helped with the original Moon landing, Irving made constant clever and subtle improvements over the years, though the vehicle did not change much until it was last driven in 1979.

The Burbank Choppers have been LARS regulars for years, traditionally setting up in the swap meet to sell their old parts and a few T-shirts. Here is club member Aaron Kahan’s Bad News Model T, which he has owned since age 5 (!). Some 14 years ago, the ’27 coupe played center stage on a TV show called Rides while being built as seen here.

The Specialty Parking welcomes an eclectic mix of automobiles, from customs and lowriders to VW Buses and muscle cars. You might occasionally notice a theme within certain rows—traditional hot rods in the case of this trio. Geoff Murray cruises in the black ’30 Model A, while the grey coupe and red roadster, both Deuces, respectively belong to Pat and Austin Grabowski.

Throttle Kings club member Peter Rodriguez drove from nearby Azusa in his ’30 Model A. The chassis came from a Deuce, which also supplied the grille, a timeless combination. When not running these smooth hubcaps, the triple-carb’d coupe runs Lyon caps or plain chrome wheels.

The Immortals Car Club brought a handful of cool rides, including a pair of Deuces owned by the Branch family. Diana hit the road in her chopped ’32 Tudor (she also owns the blue and pink A/V8 partly visible on the right), followed by her husband Tom’s gold-painted Deuce. Car looks tough with its 15×4 and 15×8.5 magnesium American Racing rims, eh?

When not cruising in their trio of 1930s hot rods, the Branch family can be found in this ’46 Ford coupe. It gets driven everywhere thanks to a dependable Chevy 350 V8, TH350 trans, and 9-inch rear. While the body remains all stock and proudly shows its patina, the suspension has been nicely slammed, courtesy of a 5-inch dropped axle and de-arched springs (front) and a parallel leaf spring kit (back).

The coupe helped promote the shop and Jack’s work thanks to its crazy paint job, enhanced with Radir Tri-Rib wheels and thin whitewall tires. The car was for sale at the show for $30,000.

Wonder what it is? You’re not alone. You won’t see many German-made 1956 Lloyds in the U.S., especially gasser versions! This one competed in the 1960s, posting a best e.t. of 11.22 at 122 mph in 1963. Motivation comes from an Olds motor with six carbs. Burt Frisby has owned the diminutive automobile since 1961.

Augie Delgado unearthed a ’66 Nova with a ton of history, having been raced by Sonny Young almost since new. He ordered the coupe with a sought-after 327/350hp option. Interview: Mikaela Salazar of Falling Through April

Even though they are originally from disparate parts of the country, Charlotte, NC based Alt Rockers Falling Through April have come together to form a cohesive unit in a city that is rich in music history and has a thriving independent rock scene. Their energy is abundant in their live shows and in the music from their new album “Zodiac”, which was released on January 19th, 2018 through Page 2 Music.

Falling Through April released first single and video “Desperate Measures in September of 2017 and have gained significant visibility: Google Play Music’s Modern Rock radio channel and iDobi radio were early supporters and are playing the song. The video premiered @ Alternative Press and debuted @ #13 on the Youtube Alternative Hotlist playlist. The band’s founders (Jim Siani, Dave Piontek, Taylor Foster, Dan Candia) have weathered the full gamut of hurdles as a startup since forming in 2011, ranging from exploding transmissions and ghosting vocalists to nearby celebratory gun fire landing Taylor in the hospital. When charismatic front woman Mikaela Salazar stepped into their lives in 2016, the road blocks were removed, and everyone found something to be excited about.

The band members came to music naturally, as they all had musicians in their family: Dan came from a long line of international musicians, and his dad always played guitar when he was growing up. Dave started in music early, and in his early teens he became enamored of the Electric Bass and that became his instrument of choice. Jim knew by the age of 13 that he wanted to be a professional musician, inspired by acts like Aerosmith, Alice Cooper, and his favorite band Weezer. Taylor grew up watching his Dad play drums, so you could say they are in his family DNA. Mikaela grew up in a house that was never silent, and the desire to be involved in music was second nature. She was inspired to become a singer by strong female musical role models like Alanis Morissette and Gwen Stefani.

The band has 2 previous independent releases: The “Take Flight” album in 2012; and the “Risk and Reward” Ep in 2015.

FTA’s goal is to have their music reach as many people as possible around the world and for their music to inspire and encourage listeners. Grief: A Strange Emotion And Why We Need To Embrace It

Grief, is a peculiar emotion.

It took me almost forty-eight hours to to start with check in and then secondly, digest the reality that forty something (please excuse me for not having the precise facts) human beings exceeded away inside the plane crash in Pakistan on December 7th, 2016. I think for me, it become no longer so much about Junaid Jamshed or the relaxation of the shaheed. It was greater to do with what I learned approximately myself and approximately grief.

The night before the plane crash, I used to be reading an autobiography approximately a neurosurgeon (Paul Kalanithi) who changed into recognized with lung most cancers at the age of thirty-six. Show Review: 3/22/22 Little Hag at Berlin Under A in NYC, NY.

On 03/22/22, I had the pleasure of seeing Little Hag play at Berlin Under A alongside Joy Cleaner, Foley, and ma ma ma. The venue was really an awesome spot, located at the corner of 2nd St and Avenue A in NYC, NY. It was a nice, tiny, basement venue with an intimate setting that really made the show that much better, since I personally prefer smaller spots.

The show started out very strong with the opener Joy Cleaner. For those who haven’t had an opportunity to listen to this band, I would suggest it. Hailing from Morristown, NJ, this three-piece band really impressed me with their pop punk meets emo sound. I think this band was great. Next came the band I was really excited to see, Little Hag, who was promoting their most recent release. This is another band that I would argue if you haven’t checked out, you’re truly missing out. Little Hag was born out of a basement in Asbury Park, NJ and is spearheaded by singer/guitarist Avery Mandeville. Their sound is similar to Snail Mail, Soccer Mommy, and Lacy Dacus with a ton more angst. Their set was really good and I enjoyed it a lot. Avery’s vocals were really strong and the music was super crisp. I also really enjoyed their use of the Micro-Korg. “The Whole World” and “Tetris” were my favorite songs I heard tonight. You can order their record Leash on Bar/None Records. We here at Pleasant will be bumping this record for a long time.

Following Little Hag was Foley, which was a very interesting band. They had a really unique vibe to them, something similar to a theatrical gothic look with some very interesting music attached to it. The set was definitely an experience in itself. Lastly, the closing band of the evening was ma ma ma. I enjoyed their sound a lot. They did a really good job and a band I would love to see again. All in all, this show was a lot of fun and I was turned on to some new bands.

Album Review: Gregor Barnett - Don’t Go Throwing Roses in my Grave

Don’t Go Throwing Roses In My Grave is the debut full length album out now on Epitaph Records from Gregor Barnett, who many know as vocals and guitar for The Menzingers, a punk rock band from Scranton, Pennsylvania. I have been a long time fan of The Menzingers, so I was very much excited when this album was announced. The first time I saw Barnett do anything solo was when he performed “Rodent” off of Rented World for Space Jam Sessions. I remember how incredible he was in that, so I knew we were in for a treat when he announced this album. Honestly, I’m surprised he hasn’t released a solo album sooner. However, the day has finally come. Don’t Go Throwing Roses in my Grave was produced by Will Yip, who also drummed on the record. Even though it's a solo album, all four members of The Menzingers were involved; Tom May took the photograph for the album cover, Eric Keen played bass and Joe Godino added percussion.

For long time fans of The Menzingers, I think you’re going to be very much into this record. Although it is a lot less punk and a lot more Americana than what you may be used to, there’s a level of comfort from hearing Barnett’s vocals that is just so soothing and wholesome. While he’s arguably written some of the best records in modern punk rock, this record feels like an introduction to Gregor Barnett in the absolute best way. The opening track, “Oh Lord, What Do You Know?” sets the tone for the rest of the record with the country-esque, Americana vibes. The second track, “Driving Through the Night”, is one of the best songs on this album. It’s a little bit more upbeat than the rest of the songs and more The Menzingers-esque. His vocals are so similar to something you’d hear on On the Impossible Past or Hello Exile. While it’s a more fast paced track than the others, it does not feel out of place on the album. Other great songs include “Talking to Your Tombstone”, “Hurry Me Down to Hades”, and the closing track, “Guest In Your House”. Overall, Don’t Go Throwing Roses In My Grave is a great debut album and I’m looking forward to what else Gregor Barnett releases in the future.

Review: 11 Albums from 2011

We had such a good time revisiting and reviewing records that came out 10 years ago, we thought it would be fun to revisit some records that came out 11 years ago. What we didn’t bargain on, was how difficult it would be to put into words how important these records were to us.

Here is a playlist from the most important songs on these 11 records.

The Story So Far -- Under Soil & Dirt - AT

Arguably, Under Soil & Dirt is one of the best modern pop punk records of 2011 and I could not write about releases during this year without including it. This 11 track record is pop punk gold from start to finish and Walnut Creek’s The Story So Far’s first full length album. The opening tracks “States and Minds”/“Roam” goes off. It sets the tone for the rest of the record and one of the best opening tracks off of any album. While every track on this album is a banger, you gotta shout out “Quicksand”, “Mt. Diablo” and the closing track, “Closure”. Even though The Story So Far has had great albums since, nothing tops this album.

Title Fight -- Shed

What would this list be without including Shed? Yet, I’m having the most difficult time finding the words to express how much this album means to me. Kingston’s Title Fight has become a household name in this music scene as we currently search for a band to fill the void of what this band once brought us. Every day I miss Title Fight.

Shed is the album that really changed everything for this band. This 11 track album kicks off with “Coxton Yard”, which is classic Title Fight. Yet, we see the band slow down halfway through the album with “Safe in Your Skin” and pick back up with “Where Am I?” Other notable tracks include the album title track “Shed”, “27″ and “Stab”. It’s truly an iconic Title Fight album and will go down as one of the greats in this scene. -AT

Manchester Orchestra --Simple Math

Manchester Orchestra are truly an underrated band and I’ve said that for YEARS. I think the problem is that they never found where they fit in in the music scene. While this band has written so many incredible albums, Simple Math is no exception. Listening to this album gives me chills. Something I realized about Manchester Orchestra is that we’re always glimpsing into the mind of vocalist and songwriter, Andy Hull and again, this album is no exception. Many of his albums feel autobiographical, rather than storytelling. There’s this vulnerability in these songs mixed with the loud guitars, beautiful harmonies, and even at one point, a kiddie choir on the track “Virgin”. Other notable songs include “Deer”, “Leave it Alone” and the album title track “Simple Math”. -AT

Basement -- I Wish I Could Stay Here - AT

This album was my first introduction to Basement and the first full length by this band. It’s crazy that this was a debut album because it truly does not sound like one and it’s even crazier to see how far this band has come and what a positive impact this album has had on them. It’s so well-deserved. Some have compared Basement and this album as the UK’s Title Fight notably in the song writing and the vocal pitch, which I think is a fair comparison. The opening track “Fading” really sets the tone for this album. While I wouldn’t say this is the best album the band has put out, each track is super solid and really allowed Basement to take off. I mean, it’s wild to think there’s an album I like even more re: Colourmeindkiness, 2012. -AT

The Wonder Years -- Suburbia, I’ve Given You All and Now I’m Nothing

Let’s talk about an iconic modern pop punk record. Suburbia checks every box. “Came Out Swinging” goes down as one of the best opening pop punk tracks of all time. Lyrically, this song is so relatable. Vocalist Dan “Soupy” Campbell sings, “I spent this year as a ghost and I’m not sure what I’m looking for”, which still relates to me ten years later as I’m trying to figure out where I belong in life. Another example of this is in “Woke Up Older”, Campbell sings, "carrying two years in the bags under my eyes”, which is again, how I’m feeling especially during this global pandemic. It’s such an album that tugs at my heart strings. For the longest time I was embarrassed of how much I loved this album, because I felt embarrassed to even like pop punk, but I am confidently putting on the record that this record IS so good. While it has so many great tracks my favorites were always “Local Man Ruins Everything” and “Don’t Let Me Cave In”. -AT

Dead End Path -- Blind Faith

In late 2010 a friend of mine sent me a Youtube link with the full album stream of Death Walks Beside Us. At the time I had never listened to anything quite like Dead End Path It was eye opening. June of 2011 came around, I had been listening to Death Walks Beside Us for a few months, Blind Faith came out and this record is as tough as nails. 22 of minutes of heavy, relentless songs. This record spoke to me lyrically as well, more so than any other hardcore record at the time. It's just songs about despiritation, questioning your beliefs, and depression. Things at the time that I was going through at the time. ”I’m not afraid to die, but I’m scared to death” is a lyric that stood out to me for so long because it's something I feel in myself. This record is definitely in my top 5 hardcore records. - RZA

Touche Amore -- Parting the Sea Between Brightness and Me

It is truly hard for me to put into words the impact that Parting the Sea Between Brightness and Me has had on me. The first time I saw the video for “Home Away From Here” on like Facebook or on Tumblr I was just enamored by everything I was seeing and hearing. The video was a bunch of photographs taken on tour that were put together to make a video and it was such a cool concept for someone who is both into photography and music. The first day I heard the song I must have listened to it over 70 times, I loved every part of it. Fast forward a few months later, I was in Newbury Comics in Boston, well not Boston but Burlington Mass, anyway not important, I was in the store and I found Parting the Sea Between Brightness and Me on vinyl so i hopped on it, used the free download code to get the record and played it without exaggeration 100,000 times in the past 11 years. The songs that stood out to me the most were “Sesame”, “~”, “the Great Repetition”, “Face Ghost” and “Home Away from Here”. With each passing time I listen to this record I this record becomes more and more important to me. -RZA

Balance & Composure -- Separation

This is another record that when I heard it, it slapped me in the face. “I Tore You Apart in My Head” was the first song I had heard off of Separation, thanks Tumblr. Every song on here is a masterpiece, from “Void” to “Stonehands” to “Fade” to “Defeat the Low” not one bad song in the bunch. This record was also very unique for its time, it didn’t fit into the barriers of pop punk and it didn’t really fit into the barrier of post-hardcore either. It was just a very well made, rather dark sounding record with deeply emotional personal lyrics. I could, and do, listen to this record almost daily. If you haven’t listened to it yet, A. you’re 11 years behind, and B. missing out on one of the best records ever. -RZA

Defeater -- Empty Days & Sleepless Nights

Defeater’s Empty Days & Sleepless Nights is one of the most lyrically dense records I've ever heard, and read. Following the story that started with Travels about a post WWII family where the father is an abusive alcoholic, the mother is a heroin addict, the older son idolizes the father, and the younger son despises the father for all he has done to the mother and the rest of the family. This record follows the two boys after the younger brother kills the father to protect the mother. To write not only one record with such a deep storyline but five, to date, is just incredible. Not only is this record a lyrical wonder but it is also truly one of the best musically too. This isn’t a record where you can just pick one song to call your favorite, it’s the whole record or nothing. -RZA

Bayside -- Killing Time

Bayside has been one of my favorite bands since about 2004. I love their music and they are one of the best live bands I’ve ever seen. But Killing Time was the record that really sealed the deal for me. No record that came before and certainly no record that came after has had any sort of impact on me like Killing Time has. Songs like “Already Gone”, “Sick, Sick, Sick”, “Sinking and Swimming on Long Island”, and “It’s Not a Bad Little War” were such a progression for Bayside. The music sounded fresh and Anthony’s vocals were different. It was such a welcomed change for me at least to hear this record. -RZA

Into It. Over It. -- Proper

Into It. Over it., what is there to say about Into It. Over It.. He Released Twelve Towns on New Year's Day in 2011, then releasing Proper as the second release of that year in September. Proper was pivotal in the emo revival of the 2010’s that I love so much; From the catchy tunes, upbeat choruses, to the math riffs and fun lyrics make for the best emo record. To me, this record came out at a perfect time and it was written by Evan Weiss solely. He played all the instruments except the drums on the record as well. In my most humble opinion the best songs on the record are “Fortunate Friends” and “P R O P E R”. I wish he’d do a show where he plays the record in its entirety.-RZA
