Game Complete #9: Darksiders
Tumblr media
I have been trying out some stuff, while mostly playing Overwatch and beating its Battle Pass (could also be a "Game Complete", but that's an endless game, so we'll keep it off the list). I have my backlog, but I've added so much stuff from Humble that I've lost sight, and so I said, fuck it, I'll try out some more games to potentially cross off the list. But then, to my surprise, I've played this game for a few hours. I had tried it before on PS3 but got stuck on a boss and wanted to try it again after all the praise and Zelda comparisons. And I have to say, this might be somewhat of an underrated gem that has aged pretty well.
This is God of War turning into Zelda turning into Portal, making it its own unique thing. This is such a complex yet simple that I had to enjoy it even though I'm usually not a fan of the traditional hack-and-slay games. The clever puzzles helped with that, even though some of them were a bit too much for me. I even enjoyed the forced backtracking in the end because they were its own environmental puzzles.

. . .
I'm just ranting to myself, so don't mind me:
(I've been playing this game OFFLINE for WEEKS now... and I've just about gone crazy over this particular "feature" of GGST.)
Guilty Gear Strive's "Fishing" gimmick is the WORST Gacha I have ever played. You literally need at least 10 fish to unlock something WHICH KEEPS GETTING RESET.
In order to get currency, you need to level up your profiles EVERY FIVE LEVELS, which is insanely hard to do OFFLINE. I absolutely REFUSE to spend $9.99 for a Month's worth of NETPLAY that will disappear after that Month is up JUST TO UNLOCK FREE CONTENT.
Guilty Gear Strive's gallery has at minimum 59 "Junk Tracks" that do absolutely nothing for you in-game except play in the gallery... it's like they did this on PURPOSE TO INFURIATE ME.
All the "Battle Tracks" are the HARDEST THINGS to unlock... because of JUNK TRACKS and because of AVATAR PARTS that are ONLY USEFUL ONLINE.
Because of this... I have owned DLC I bought with MY MONEY that has been "locked" behind Gacha for WEEKS and they just WON'T UNLOCK.
Now, I could SIMPLY "give in" and spend that $9.99 for Netplay purposes and just fight and defeat some Level 30+ random person with every character in the roster I have mastered.... but you have to understand the PRINCIPLE OF THE IDEA...
Promising tracks and content for a game and LOCKING it behind a very poorly built Gacha system is the HEIGHT OF TYRANNY.
I've played Guilty Gear Strive on STEAM for FREE ONLINE ever since the game was released... that is nearly 1,000+x LONGER than the time needed to "Time Release" all FREE content in Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus R.... a game that has YET to be released on PS4 and PS5 (I feel sorry for future gamers in that regard for never having played AC+R before).
I'm not gonna say "PC master race" here... that would be folly and arrogant... but I will say that game companies that build their games SOLELY around Netplay and Online content NEED TO RECONSIDER THEIR USERBASE AND MORALITY VALUES.
Right now I feel like I've been travelling in a SWELTERING DESERT because I can't access FREE CONTENT simply because of OFFLINE DISCRIMINATION. Like being promised WATER and having to SELL YOUR SOUL in order to DRINK IT.
Normally I would forgive most DLC content as attempts to MAKE PROFIT, but I do NOT appreciate having content DANGLED in front of my nose and having the odds of obtaining that content CONSTANTLY OUT OF REACH.
Maybe Japanese Culture "permits" the concept of Gacha and Roll Gambling... but I have GENUINELY AND TRUELY GOTTEN FED UP WITH IT.
If you haven't complained to ARC System Works about this yet... please DO. I give you my blessing. I've already mentioned it to them previously... More offline content would be nice... more ways to earn currency would be nice OFFLINE.
Even something as simple as VS CPU mode would be a nice feature THAT NOBODY except Frenchbread and Project Soul ever thought of...
Sigh... okay, rant over... go on with your lives...

COMPLETED: Untitled Goose Game
Tumblr media
It's not my first time playing this. But it was better the second time around. Big hit with the kids.
I played this when the kids were too young to really get it. But my wife enjoyed it. She suddenly had a hankering to play so that's what we did this past weekend. I also learned for the first time that it's a two player game.
It's an indie game, cheers! It's not a shooting/killing game based around combat, cheers! You play a really mean goose...well, ha... it's kinda funny.
But it costs $20--WTF?!
Anyway, the graphics are fun: low poly, solid color. Perfect for an indie game. Reminds me of Vritua Racer and all those games. The animations and behaviors of the characters are pretty good. But it's the geese that stand out. They're natural behavior are well captured. Just watching them stroll around like they didn't ruin the day of a dozen villagers cracked me up.
What I love about the game is that you're invited to figure it out as you go. They could have made it 100% emergent and just let the player harass the townsfolk (maybe thay was early iterations), but they give you really silly quests, like stealing hats or causing someone to spill their tea. Most of it doesn't open up new opportunities, but they're funny. It's dumb that geese would have such arbitrary actions as objectives, even dumber that it's tracked on notebook paper eith cursive writing. But encourages the player to try things and whether you fail or exceed, it almost always gets a laugh.
The final punchline, of course, is learning the ultimate goal of the geese is to grab a bell from the model village and return to a pit filled with previously stolen bells. It's ridiculous in the best way.
But is it worth $20? No fucking way. I love short indie games like this but they need to come with short indie prices. $5 is a good deal...maybe $10 at launch. It makes me think Mister Mosquito on PS2. I never bought it, but I loved the idea of it. Also, it cost $20--what the fuck?
I have this game through PlayStation plus. For anyone with access to the game, it's worth the play. If you don't have "free" access...eh.

We just finished
Saints Row (2022)
through PlayStation Plus
Context: I was waiting to pick up this game when it first came out but I had no motivation to purchase. So happy it was released with PlayStation Plus. We recently played Watchdogs 2 so it felt like a good continuation of that vibe but instead of it being a tech mecca like SF, it takes place in a fictional south western city (Mixture of LA meets Las Vegas). So this was an excellent chance to try. I had not played the first series of Saints Row games. I played the Gat out of Hell game that was most recently released in 2015 and I had no idea what the hell was going on in the plot. But I did enjoy the silly and the general gameplay.
Saints Row 2022 is a “Double A” video game series as we dubbed it in the house.
It’s almost a polished game but a little rough around the QA edges. Not a triple AAA masterpiece like HFW but Saints Row has a palatable series of main missions fleshed out by a few short side missions. It’s a reasonable experience in that most of the quests are digestible 10-15 minute sprints at the most. If you’re looking for a good game to play after work- this might be an excellent pick up & play title instead of a battle royale game. We will be upfront and say we encountered a few bugs where quest markers didn’t load or never activated. This game benefited from frequent save states. But that shouldn’t take away from picking up the game. It was semi uncommon and only happened when we were minn maxing our gameplay.
The plot wasn’t exactly what I was expecting, when they sold all the “gangs” of Santo Illeso I thought I would be able to pick one and join them. You actually are your own start up gang. This is where I think many players are divided on the games approach.
When the game was first released there was a lot of talk about Millennials, start ups, and general disdain for these types of people. The general air was that most folks who played the older games (one would hope the more dedicated to the series, players who would buy in the most)- were kinda alienated by the language and appeal. They were not the Target demographic anymore.
This happened between Watch Dogs 1 & 2 as well. Millennial writers were injecting themselves into the experience and some just couldn’t connect.
I loved it. I ate that shit up with my barehands. I love the jokes, the loved the camaraderie, the aesthetics.
If there were sex jokes they were not at the cost of LGBTQA folk or Women. They had quests about Larping which was taken seriously and creatively. There was a huge diversity in the types of quests too so if you were hoping to just shoot stuff well you’ll find yourself stealing bank trucks with helicopters, maybe photographing experimental materials for a fashion collection or stealing art statues for your home base.
The creativity of Team Volition to modernize the property and inject a less serious attitude really helped me get through all the bugs and lack of QA.
Often I would call the game a less serious version of GTA5. I loved the friendship shared amongst the characters that you never got from a Michael & Franklin interaction. I loved the love shared by the characters and each of the gang investing in each others interest. I appreciated with Neenah joined in the LARPing language or the focus on the waffle iron for Kevin. They really felt like friends who transcended borders (gangs).
Side note- NOBODY SAID YAGAMI-SAN FROM JUDGEMENT 2018 WAS KEVIN!! Our favorite lawyer was a polyamorous king?? Sex forward male characters can always be cringey but he was so sweet and friendly towards all his Exes I enjoyed all the side chatter about who he dated in the past. He was never spiteful, always wanted to have a good meal with the people he cared about.
I think that’s the main selling point of Saints Row 2022 for me. If you’re looking for an semi tight open-ish world game (no real level caps or limitations) that is paired with actual voice acting and cut scenes- this is an excellent choice. If I was shopping for a teenager like 13-18, and you didn’t want to pick up one of the other soulless shooters- this was an excellent choice. There is a lot of smart aleck humor and relatable characters that felt like people we knew.
Often I would say to Ryo “oh this is so me, that’s so you” and it felt like we were totally in the game.
