My Golden Trio Headcanons (some modern some not)

Harry:

Oddly good at beer pong.

One time caught the snitch in his mouth and almost died.

Is REALLY good at cooking(less headcanon and more actually canon)

Loves the rain, absolutely hates thunder.

Had American southern tea ONCE and never looked at Earl Grey the same way again (Hermione gets upset about it every time they get tea together)

Soap opera lover(he watches them with Ron)

Is really good at drawing birds specifically.

He’s good at pottery but can only make bowls and plates.

SPIDER-MAN FAN

Ron:

Chess lover, both magic AND muggle(that’s canon but I’m including it anyways)

When Harry tried American sweet tea for the first time, Ron got to try fried butter for the first time too, he promptly inhaled it.

He hates crabs.

He often has stare offs with Crookshanks which either end with Ron getting mauled, or Crookshanks getting locked out of the room.

Is a DIEHARD Beastie Boys fan, Hermione introduced him to them and he hasn’t looked back since.

His favorite color is the exact shade of brown that Hermione’s eyes are :)

Soap opera lover(he watches them with Harry)

Wears bright neon crocs, has worn them on dates with Hermione before, will wear them on dates with Hermione again.

Got a buzz cut one time and Hermione screamed in pure unbridled terror when she saw it(she did not speak for him for a week, he had to magically grow it back)

Bad at pottery but loves playing with the clay.

DEADPOOL FAN

Hermione:

Aroace spectrum(because I love projecting onto characters and it’s canon in my eyes)

One time tried to straighten her hair and both Ron and Harry got scared when they saw it(it did not work)

Knows ALL of the Elder Scrolls lore

Has played Skyrim to completion over 19 times.(that is not an exaggeration, she’s pulled various all nighters)

HORRIFIC sleep schedule

Will not read romance, UNLESS it’s completely historically accurate.

Bad at drawing, really good at pottery oddly enough.

While she’s good at pottery, she absolutely despises the feel of wet clay, and then the feel of dry clay on her skin so she doesn’t sculpt stuff without gloves on.

Hates the texture of pasta, it has to be made in a VERY specific way for her to enjoy it.

Doesn’t like being smooched on the temple because it’s too close to her eyes and she thinks it’s unsanitary.

Had a seafood boil one time and was out like a light for a full DAY.

Tried a vegan diet for like a year but she accidentally ate a wet piece of ham in a sleep deprived delirium.

Beans on toast FIEND.

One time had a five day mental breakdown over magic and specifically quidditch brooms not following the laws of physics.

Dinosaur nerd.

Dr Strange and Reed Richards fan

Golden Trio:

Codependent.

They have a book club, Ron’s favorite genre is a mix between really cheesy badly written romances and westerns, Harry’s favorite genre is murder mysteries and philosophy, funnily enough, Hermione doesn’t like murder mysteries because she guesses the plot/plot twists and they’re always correct, she usually only reads non-fiction but she occasionally likes accurate science fiction and she also enjoys biographies.

Hermione once sat them down to watch a bunch of muggle movies, some Harry recognized, while Ron was just utterly entranced by the television, occasionally shaking Harry’s shoulder when something happened on screen.

While Hermione was finishing her seventh/ “eighth” year she was sent at LEAST ten letters DAILY, from both Ron and Harry.

They shared an apartment for like two years and would quiet often all sleep in the same bed.

That habit followed them into adulthood, and they occasionally sleep in the same bed.

Both Harry and Ron, along with Ginny, will flaunt Hermione being the minister, often.

Harry has forced the other two to rewatch every Star Wars movie, more than ten times.

Ron and Hermione broke up one time in their relationship and Harry was more distraught than both of them combined.

“Why on earth wouldn’t you tell me you were cheating on me with Harry, Hermione?” Ron asked loudly and dramatically, as he sat down.

Both Harry and Hermione looked up in surprise. They were in the Ministry canteen, waiting for Ron, who had volunteered to go up to the Muggle Relations Department because his and Harry’s newest case required it. “What d’you mean?” Harry asked puzzled. He was pretty sure Ron had gotten over that particularly insecurity and jealousy. He sounded more mocking than serious, anyway.

Ron pouted exaggeratedly. “Jenkins told me that he heard from Bhatt who heard from Smith who heard from her girlfriend that Hermione kissed your cheek yesterday, Harry.”

“Eleanor Smith’s girlfriend?” Harry scoffed. “Isn’t that Romilda Vane? Still in Hogwarts?”

Ron shrugged, stealing what he liked from the other two’s plates. Neither of them protested, too used to it at that point. “There were probably another hundred names through which the rumours came. Got fed up listening, though.”

Hermione looked amused. “What exactly did you tell Jenkins?”

Ron shrugged. “Nothing. The poor bloke looked terrified anyway.”

“Well, he was facing Ron Weasley the Legend, the War Hero, the Capturer of the Hollow Tree Murderer,” Harry teased.

“Says the Boy-Who-Live, the Man Who Conquered and the one who finally caught Travers, Yaxley and Liswood.” Ron tossed the compliment right back at him without hesitation.

“Says the one who helped incarcerate the Lestrange brothers—”

“Says the one who spearhead the Auror department reform and solves more cold cases than anyone else—”

“Says the one being consulted by the Minister for strategy—”

“Boys, boys, you’re both pretty,” Hermione muttered patronizingly under her breath.

Harry and Ron caught one another’s eyes and grinned. “Says the great Hermione Granger,” Harry began melodramatically. “Brains of the Golden Trio!”

“Campaigner for House-Elf and Creature rights!”

“Rising star in Legislation and the Wizengamot!”

“The one who got all Os in her NEWTs!”

“Who discovered all sorts of new charms to—”

“Stop it, stop it!” Hermione said, flustered now. She was the bossiest and most know-it-all person Harry had ever met, he thought with fondness swelling up, but also so bad at taking compliments. It was kind of pathetic.

“You’re the one who’s lecturing him all the time about how ‘modesty can be overdone too, Harry’,” Ron said in an amazing imitation of Hermione’s fussily scolding tone, jabbing a thumb in Harry’s direction.

“Yeah, don’t be a hypocrite, Hermione,” Harry said cheerfully. “Learn how to accept credit better.”

“If the two of you don’t shup up now,” Hermione said in a dark tone. “I’m not offering any help on your latest case. And you won’t be going anywhere public for months by the time I’m done with you.”

Both of them instantly shut up. The combination of Hermione’s knowledge of runes, arithmancy and obscure enchantments and her voracious appetite for research, combined with Ron’s everyday wizard knowledge and knack for strategy and Harry’s observations, instincts, knowledge of Dark Curses and Magical Defense and top-notch duelling was what made the three of them an unstoppable team. And he’d never heard Hermione make a truly empty threat before. He loved Hermione, she was his best friend, but he still had an appropriate amount of awe and possibly a little fear for her.

Then again. . . Harry and Ron lived recklessly. Their eyes locked.

“As Her Highness Hermione commands,” Harry said gravely. Hermione closed her eyes in the resigned defeat they spotted on her whenever she realized what idiots she’d tied the rest of her life to: her boyfriend and best friend.

“Could never even dream of disobeying her,” Ron agreed, sounding like he was giving a eulogy with how serious he was.

“You two are the worst.”

“Have you heard?” Ron asked the moment Hermione, Harry and Ginny set foot into his and Harry’s joint office. Ron’s side was as cluttered as ever, Harry’s as painfully clean too. Hermione frowned. She wished she’d done more for her best friend while he’d been with those godawful people. Half a dozen magical photos waved jauntily at them – Harry, Ron and Hermione in fourth year, laughing; the entire Weasley family in Grimmauld Place; Harry, Ginny, Hermione and Ron in sixth year after the first two had started dating; Harry holding Teddy, beaming proudly; the DA in the Room of Requirement; and the Weasley family the Christmas after Victoire was born, all wearing Weasley sweaters – including Fleur, Harry, Hermione, Audrey and Teddy. “Ginny, you’re cheating on Harry again.”

Ginny scoffed. “Really, Ron, you’ve turned into a serious gossip maid.”

As Ron sputtered in indignant offence, Harry turned to his girlfriend with a mischievous grin. “Well, who is it this time?”

“Draco Malfoy,” Hermione said, torn between amusement and irritation at how he was playing along.

Harry’s nose wrinkled. “The Ferret? Really, Gin? Always figured you’d have better taste than that.”

Ginny laughed. “Sorry love, next time, I’ll get caught on camera with Neville or Luna,” She promised solemnly. “Is that better?”

“Much,” Harry said just as solemnly. “If I’m being cheated on, there should be standards. Malfoy would be smug forever if he thought he stole my girlfriend,” He made a face.

“Well, unluckily for him, I’m too much in love with my boyfriend to ever consider anything like that,” Ginny said with a smile. Harry looked absolutely besotted as they leaned in to kiss. Hermione had never seen her best friend like that before Ginny. He’d been head-over-heels for Cho, awkward with Parvati and half-resentful half-admiring with Cedric, but she’d never seen the look of pure-comfort-and-just-enjoying-spending-time-together on him.

“Ugh,” Ron complained, miming vomiting. Hermione chuckled and kissed his cheek. Slightly mollified, he still continued, “Ginny, why do you have to pounce on my best friend every time you come to our office?”

Harry blushed lightly. Hermione knew it still touched every time one of the Weasleys declared he was family, that Harry was the one who needed protecting from Ginny. “You’re one to talk,” Harry said, snorting. “You positively paw at Hermione every time you see her.”

Hermione instantly took back every single good thing she’d thought or said about Harry Potter.

“We’re not talking about this!” Ron said in an annoyed tone. “We’re talking about how many rumours are there about the two of you.”

“Like there aren’t nearly as many about you and Hermione,” Ginny said, rolling her eyes.

“Nearly,” Hermione felt the need to emphasize because apparently hanging around her boys for nearly a decade had made her as pettily pedantic as them.

Ginny waved it off impatiently. “Besides, the three of you have more rumours about you than either of us couples.” Somehow, she didn’t sound at all resentful. Hermione marvelled at how well Ginny understood Harry and his very oddly intense friendships with her and Ron.

“What?!” Ron squawked in outrage. “Hermione, come on, we have to spread some more rumours ourselves. We’re not getting outdone by Harry the bastard who broods about cases all day!”

“Did you miss the ‘three of you’ in her sentence?” Hermione said witheringly.

Harry and Ginny rolled their eyes as the couple began to playfully bicker, and resigned themselves to a much later dinner double date than planned.

“Have you heard?” Ron asked after the latest DA reunion had ended. George, Luna, Ron and Hermione were the last remaining in Harry and Ginny’s house. George was entertaining Teddy and Luna and Ginny were talking in the garden, leaving only the trio to clean up like the traitors the lot of them were.

“What is it this time?” Hermione asked interestedly.

“Apparently, we’re planning on taking over the wizarding world using muggle technology and science.” Ron said, smirking.

“People finally figured out that muggles are something to worry about, then?” Harry asked, stifling a yawn and trying to discern if the goo on the carpet could be vanished.

“I agree that it’s about time, but where on earth would they even get that idea?” Hermione asked, frowned. “It’s not like we’re the best at keeping in touch with the other side.”

“I don’t know,” Harry grinned. “I think we’re leagues better than the guy who got arrested for breaking the Statue last week.”

Ron snorted in agreement, and Hermione laughed at the reminder. “He was even funnier than the one who wanted to wear a nightgown during the World Cup before fourth year. Remember?”

“I remember you couldn’t stop laughing for ages,” Ron teased. Hermione childishly stuck her tongue out at him. “Anyway, I think it’s because of your Muggle-Born-and-Raised-Gatherings and because of the flat. Or maybe because you were seen using your tablet, Harry.”

“I don’t know what they’re worried about the meetings,” Harry rolled his eyes. “Hermione made us watch Pride and Prejudice. Pride. And. Flipping. Prejudice.”

Hermione rolled her eyes right back. “You like the book, Harry.”

“The book. The move is so boring I was asleep within ten seconds, Hermione. Still,” He added thoughtfully. “It was a bit of a rest. Department’s been hectic these days.”

“Yeah, it really has,” Ron agreed over Hermione’s admonishments of not sleeping in committee meetings. “You have any idea why?”

“Nope. You should, though, you’re the one who has dirt on everyone and everything.”

“I refuse to see why that’s a bad thing,” Ron sniffed in a very Hermione-like way.

“I’m not sure I should be telling you this. . . .” Hermione chewed on her lip.

“Oh, come on, Hermione,” Ron persuaded. “You haven’t kept something from us since the time turner fiasco in third year.”

“I don’t know. . . .”

“It’s us, Hermione.” Harry argued. It was the best argument he could make. The three of them kept nearly nothing from one another.

“Oh, okay,” She conceded. “I heard Urquhart and Gibbins talking to Robards. He’s thinking about retiring.”

“Bloody hell,” Ron gaped. “No wonder there’s the fuss. Robards is the best Head Auror we’ve had in a while! He’s pretty much in charge of Law Enforcement too, since Madam Gibbins is pregnant. He got us through the War and the cleanup. Who’s going to replace him?”

“Er. . . .” Harry cleared his throat. “So. Maybe I do know a bit more now that I know that. . . . Robards has been dumping a lot of pape– parchmentwork on me and lecturing me about leadership and recklessness. . . .”

“Have you heard?” Hermione asked.

“I can’t believe Ron has managed to corrupt you too like this, Hermione,” Harry said solemnly. “I – I really thought that it would be the two of us against his insanity, but I should have known better than to expect loyalty from my best friend—”

“Ron is your best friend,” Hermione dismissed with a roll of her eyes, half affectionate, half irritated. “And I’m serious, Harry.”

“I thought you were Hermione and anyway I’ve never known you not to be—” Harry started and then stopped at the look she gave him. “Okay, what is it?”

Hermione took a deep breath. “Your Wizengamot seat, Harry. Ever since you’ve become Head of Law Enforcement, that adds a third seat to your assets.”

Harry nodded, confused. “Yeah, I know that. I’ve been using that only. The hereditary Black and Potter ones make me. . .” He shrugged. “Uncomfortable.”

“Those old codgers brought up this law that people related to part-humans aren’t allowed to inherit the seats.” Hermione blurted out.

It took Harry a moment to sort through the relevance. “No,” He said flatly. “They didn’t.”

“They did, mate.” Ron said, looking apologetic, striding into Harry’s office.

“What are we doing about it?” Harry asked furiously.

“I’m looking into how to discredit the ones bringing up the law already,” the Head of Wizarding Legislation said instantly. “There are a couple of caveats and loopholes we can use, Harry. We can deal with this, Harry. Hopefully by next year. Definitely by the time he finishes third year and has to begin the process of taking it over.”

“Oh, Teddy,” Ron realized, and anger spread over his face. He was apparently just realizing how this law affected them personally. Harry had recently declared Teddy the heir to the Black seat and Andromeda his regent and made clear that Ginny would be regent for the Potter one until Jamie, Al or Lily came of age and wanted it. “Don’t worry, Harry. Teddy won’t even know about this. We’ll crush them.” He vowed. “I’ll talk to some of the Wizengamot members who come into the shop and see their views and try to persuade them. We’ll get George to spread the word through his products too.”

Harry felt a rush of affection for his friends, who who had never left his side, who would follow him to the end of the world, who knew what he needed before he did himself.

“Have you heard?” Hermione asked in a mock whisper. “He’s leaving us here, languishing working for the Ministry, while he goes works for his brother and has fun without us.”

“Yes,” Harry nodded, feigning seriousness. “Even your betrayal of stooping to a plebian ‘Have you heard’ pales compared to his.”

“Oi, shut up.” Ron grumbled. “Not my fault the two of you have a ‘saving people thing’ that’ll never end.”

Harry thought about his job. His exhilaration at duelling, the way he got engrossed in every case, the relief and joy he got at putting people meaning harm behind bars, how he got to weed out corruption at the heart of their world. It may not be all that wonderful – not all gold glitters gold – but he loved it. He knew Hermione felt similarly, the same rush of pride and happiness and relief every time she won a case, every time one of her laws passed.

Ron had never been like them. Now that all the Death Eaters were behind bars, now that Harry was Head of Magical Law Enforcement and would no longer need a partner as often, he would be happier running his bakery and co-managing the shop with George who had been a bit listless since Angelina had gone back to work a year after having Roxanne.

“Now Hermione and I will be alone all the more often having lunch and stuff and ‘Golden Trio Love Square’ will be in the headlines a lot more often,” Harry said, half actually irritated and half mocking.

“On that note, the press thinks you’re either a drug addict or terminally ill because you’ve been looking tired recently.” Ron said brightly.

“I’d like them go through the shift to a new job with more work while dealing with four kids at home and preparing one of them for Hogwarts,” Harry grumbled.

“You know what the press is like,” Hermione said sympathetically.

Harry sighed. “Well, we’re living legends. Guess I’m never escaping this nonsense, huh?”

“Never escaping us either, mate.” Ron said, wrapping an arm around his shoulders.

“Never.” Hermione vowed.

Harry smiled softly. “Never,” He agreed.

My Opinions on Harry Potter Ships (controversial but not for shock value)

I have tagged the ships that I talk negatively about under anti, so check the tags before you read this. Keep in mind there are a few here that I feel iffy on but did not tag as anti.

(Shrug means I prefer them sometimes or specifically in one medium over another (book vs. movie), check means I love them in every version, X means not at all)

Golden Era

Drarry: 🤷‍♀️ The appeal comes and goes; the further from canon it gets, the more I like it, but in a canon compliant universe I don't. Still, they were immensely important to each other growth wise, and I enjoy seeing the different interpretations of that.

Romione: ✅ One of the all-time greats. Sure, the books are kinder to their relationship, but the movies aren't completely lacking in the way some people would like to believe (newsflash: it's not just Ron's character that was butchered in the movies).

Dramione: ❌ I wouldn't be exaggerating when I say that finding out someone ships Dramione makes me lose respect for them. If you understand Hermione at all, and not the self-insert version of her that the fandom has created, you'd know that she would never.

Linny: ✅ I enjoy them, but specifically the book version of them that features Ginny as Luna's weirdness translator and Luna as the cryptid hanging out at all the Gryffindor parties under Ginny's arm. Platonic or romantic, they are a great match.

Deamus: ✅ Love, love, love. The fact that they are one of the few characters that don't have a confirmed marriage by the end of the series just adds to the delusion that they ran off together. Hard to find any content of them that I don't like.

Hinny: 🤷‍♀️ Harry finding happiness and a family after everything he was forced to go through is all that matters to me, so I never want to rain on his parade but, again, their relationship is so much better in the books. Ginny, specifically, is better in the books, but I digress.

Marauders

Jily: ✅ I hate seeing them shipped with anyone else. Their love literally saved their child. They're written in the stars: stag and doe. They were in each other's lives longer than they weren't. Plus, you know who else tried to separate Jily? Voldemort.

Wolfstar: 🤷‍♀️ I started out as a decent fan, but my appreciation has slowly fizzled out. Their dynamic is more interesting when you see them for how they really are: the last of their group. They aren't the ones they wanted, but the ones they got.

Jegulus: ❌ I have little else to say about it other than that I miss when it wasn't being shoved down my throat and washed down with Lily-slander.

Okay but also they (hbo series) need to fix the Ron and Harry relationship as well. People ship Harry and Hermione because of the movies and how they sacrificed Ron’s character development for for Hermione’s. If Ron and Harry’s relationship were true to this books, people would be more content with Hinny and Romione.

Edit to say: and honestly redeeming their relationship just for the sake of doing so would be even better! Ron is the first person to show Harry unconditional love and care. They really are platonic soul mates. Harry is devastated when Ron isn’t around- let’s show that part of their relationship! It has depth! It has love!

What was the HP fandom on AO3 writing in 2022?

some stats diving, ship- and femslash-focused.

default filters used for everything unless indicated otherwise: language: english, no crossovers. only on AO3 (obviously)

hmm someday i'll do a yearly breakdown maybe.

for reference, there were ~324,676 total works in the HP tag updated in 2022 and before, so the top ship Drarry makes up 16% of HP works.

ships in this list but not the former: jegulus, dorlene, and regulus & sirius.

ships in the former list but not this one: snarry, sevmione, tomarry.

harry the character is tagged in 42.7% of all HP works.

the list of "fastest-growing HP character tags in 2022" was almost identical to this. sirius, remus, james, and lily went up one place, severus and ginny down by one, and ron dropped by two. no change in the top 3.

i'm thinking of doing one for HP ships but am unsure which ships to do. you can get a rough estimation from graph #2 though!

A closer look at just the 2022 ships:

filters used: english, no crossovers, works updated between 2022-01-01 and 2022-12-31.

color = ship type by canonical gender. outlined = canon ship

Background vs main pairing ships:

most commonly tagged ships, with the otp:true filter:

very pretty spread of (canon gender, not AO3 category) F/M & M/M ships here.

notable: there is not a single snape ship in the first list, and two snape ships in the second (sevmione at #4 !! and snarry at #8). grindeldore is the other new entry, and

romione, dorlene and regulus & sirius fell out of the top 10

this is probably a better view though:

a mix of all ships in either of the top two graphs (excluding the platonic ship regulus & sirius by definition of the otp:true filter), plus remadora.

open to more ship suggestions, but at some point i need to think about a size cutoff

anyway: some interesting strata here:

snarry+sevmione at the >60-70% mark. (do all snape ships show this trend? just crossgen snape ships? what about other crossgen ships? to be investigated)

grindeldore is an expected outlier due to the different canonical time period

marauders era tends to have more fics-with-multiple-tagged-ships. unexpected - there are so many more named lightning gen characters! lightning gen fandom more splintered/fragmented?

clustering of canon couples at the 15-20% mark, surprisingly consistent across marauders vs lightning gen

oooooo i could soapbox about this dorlene outlier for days. (tldr: if you want to write OFCxOFC that's all well and good, but writing OFCxOFC as what's quite clearly a background ship and a background ship alone? i think we can do better.)

Multi-shipping & ship overlap

marauders era is dominated by one main fanon pairing. no other “/” pairing with either of these two characters makes the top 10 list. in contrast, wrt lightning gen, Draco, Harry, and Hermione are all shipped with each other, with all three combinations making the top 10 list.

there is one pair of marauders era ships with ship overlap, though. which means stats! also included remadora as an additional comparison point since that's another big overlapping ship

jegulus AND jily are tagged in 675 works, out of 3944 works (17%) where all three of james, lily, and regulus are tagged.

meanwhile drarry + dramione: 80 works tagging both ships, out of 8128 works tagging all 3 characters, with an overlap of <1% fics tagging both ships. these two do not mix.

tried two ways of filtering down to just femslash ships without losing too much else in the process:

1) excluding works tagged M/M, F/M, and Gen (leaving 2765 fics)

dashed outline = cross-gen ship. solid = marauders gen. everything else = lightning gen.

oh, interesting, people are writing genderbend wolfstar? *checks fics* -- no they're not. 'nuff said.

2) instead, tried adding the otp:true filter (2402 fics)

very similar results -- both lists had the same 9 femslash ships. Bellamione (#1 on both), Fleurmione (#2), Pansmione (#3/#4), Dorlene (#3/#5), Linny (#4/#6), Cissamione (#5/#6), Ginmione (#7/#9), Marylily (#7/#9), Ginsy (#8/#10).

i don't see any obvious trends re. which ships are ranked higher on one list vs the other.

a real quick rating comparison between categories, using the otp:true filter:

🔥+ a Harry Potter ship you have a strong (positive or negative) opinion on

Harry and Hermione are my OTP! They're probably the only ship I care about in the entire series. I don't really have anything against Harry/Ginny or Hermione/Ron per say, but I just think they pale in comparison to Harry and Hermione.

The movies in particular seem to want you to ship Harry and Hermione. Not only do Daniel and Emma have GREAT chemistry (the best chemistry out of all the relationships), but the way the books were adapted to screen seem to prop them up as a dynamic whilst simultaneously cutting out or misrepresenting the dynamics between Harry and Ginny and Hermione and Ron.

Like, those couples (Hinny and Romione) are WAY better developed in the books. Although, I will say, the dynamic between Harry and Hermione is also excellent in the books.

They're just this unstoppable force. They work well together, they know each other better than anyone else, and they genuinely respect and admire each other. I think it's clear that she-who-must-not-be-named was on the fence about where she was going to go up until book five. Emma Watson and she-who-must-not-be-named even agree that Harry and Hermione should've been endgame, with the latter even admitting she only had Hermione and Ron end up together because their dynamic is based on her own past relationship, and it was a self-fulfillment of some sort. Like, they were the fanfic of her own life lol. The way she *wished* it would've ended.

I see a lot of criticism of Harry and Hermione be like, "Sometimes, people are just friends. Not everything is romantic." But you could ALSO say that about Hermione and Ron, so I don't really consider that a valid criticism. Sure, a man can be friends with a woman and it can be completely platonic, but that doesn't mean it's wrong to read into it otherwise?

All The Pieces Fall | @lanaturnergetup | Scorbus | Rated M The other half of #scorbusfest2k23. Poor Al here makes me want to give him a hug too! The Potter siblings dynamics here are just *chef's kiss* and the yearning between these two boys is top shelf!

Visit | @turanga4 | Gen | Rated T I am in awe of Turanga and consider myself extremely lucky that I occasionally get to beta for her. This fic from McGonagall's POV is set at the end of GOF, in the Hospital Wing. It absolutely nails McGonagall's characterisation and is such a lovely insight into her feelings for Harry.

Kiss Each Other Clean | RonsGirlFriday | Romione | Rated T I am extremely late in discovering @constitutionalweasleymonarchy's (RonsGirlFriday on AO3) fics, but it's safe to say I'm obsessed. I struggled with picking just one to put on this list but today, this is it. Ron and Hermione comforting each other after the battle, so exhausted and wrung out but on the precipice of a relationship. It's beautifully written and I recommend all of her fics.

Fumes That Curled and Twisted | @uncertainwallflower | Jily | Rated G This Jily microfic might not have many words but it uses them brilliantly. A tiny look into Lily's mind when she can smell Amortentia.

Stars in His Eyes | @celestemagnoliathewriter | Blackbolt | Rated T January 2023 was the month I discovered Sirius/Kingsley and I am hooked. Celeste asks the question 'why did Kingsley have so many pictures of Sirius?' and gives us an extremely satisfying answer (followed by a devastating sequel), with a lovely side of Remadora.

Plus a rec list from January 2023 wouldn't be complete without all of the wonderful fics written for @harrypocter's Winter Sun Drabble Fest.

It's a short on this month because I literally only decided to do this tonight and had to comb back through my AO3 history. I'm going to aim to keep this up every month so hopefully February's list will be a bit longer!

Happy New Year my friends!

Hey humans how is everyone doing?

I know I’ve been a little MIA for the last while. In May, I got an amazing job that I love. My career is my life and I am okay with that at this time.

But I miss you all and have not forgotten that all of you played a part in getting me through the worst 2 years of my life. At first it was just the Harry Potter/Romione community but it slowly grew to a massive fandom family as you all slowly turned me into a giant geek, this family became my only source of happiness while I was alone in my apartment for a year. Even when I felt like I was drowning, you all kept me floating. Thank you so much. I can’t express it properly.

There is no way I will be able to tag everyone but a huge shout out to the following people. Each of you supported me in different ways. Some of you simply messaged me and made sure I was okay, one of you invited me onto your podcast and changed everything (Santino)(seriously this is all his fault), one of you became my platonic soulmate who I could talk to about anything with literally no filter (Jess). Two of you started a fucking podcast with me (Jess/Megha). One of you was a strong support beam that talked to me everyday, asked if I was okay, called me when I was crying, made me blush, made me laugh, and talked to me about anything (HM).

Can you talk more about what Hermione is going thru in the latest chapter of Beasts? Like I can see her obsessing over the hearings is a bad coping mechanism and it true that it’s not fair to others hearing them 24/7 but like I also wanna give Hermione a big hug because girl is definitely going thru something but is not dealing with it properly (also will Ron/ Romione crumbs have me squealing can I just say how much I love you had HARRY checking in on Hermione?? Fandom has the terribly habit of thinking Harry doesn’t care/is uncomfortable to deal with Hermione emotions but in the books he does care and I love that you show him doing it more instead of leaving him in the “can’t deal with this Ron you deal with her” fandom cliche, caring platonic Harry/Hermione for the win!)

I would love to talk about this! Hermione needs a truly historic hug at this point in Beasts, no getting around it. I'm so glad you pulled that part out about Harry and Hermione - Harry does really care, and it felt important to show that, especially that that dynamic will continue even when Romione are officially together. That deep love Harry has for Hermione isn't going anywhere. (And yep I love the Nick Cave dancing scene from the DH film, it's my favourite scene in all eight films, cuff me)

While I don't want to say too much about where Hermione's at (lots more to come, I swear, and it's killing me not to talk about it because I do so love to chatter), I can definitely talk a bit about Hermione's mental state in general terms, and map out some of the thought processes behind where the two girls are at this stage in the fic. Full discussion is below the cut because it does contain some (mild) spoilers, so read on at your peril!

So - Hermione. The thing is that Ginny, for all that she's intuitive, kind and observant, is a limited narrator. We've already seen moments where we know Ginny doesn't always read things or people right - she's extremely empathetic and shrewd towards people she feels similarly to (so far, Harry), and she's by default compassionate to those who either ask directly or who clearly demand for emotional support and reassurance (Bea, Neville, Hannah, asking to come to the pub with them all). But with people she's different to - even if she loves them and is otherwise close to them - she doesn't always get it right. She struggles to work them out and to guess how the people around her are going to respond. In canon, we see this with her changing relationship with Fleur after Bill's attack. In this fic, I've tried to show this in her first meeting with Hagrid, for instance, when she thought he was intimidating and mocking her, or her certainty that Bill is doing the right thing staying well away from the Greyback hearings, when Bill has actually decided to walk into the fire and get involved. Ginny's going through it with her own stuff, too, right - she's blinkered.

What Ginny has seen of Hermione so far, and what the reader (hopefully!) sees, is someone who is being equally guarded about what's going on with them, but who is dealing with their shit very differently to how Ginny is dealing - or not dealing - with hers. It's not that Ginny isn't trying to get through to her, it's that she doesn't know how best to do it. When Ginny looks at Hermione, she sees someone who isn't asking her for help, who doesn't need Ginny as protection, but who is instead developing an obsessive and quite solitary interest in the trials and questions of post-war societal reckoning that Ginny thinks is unhealthy. Hermione judges Ginny for not taking more of an interest in an issue of historic importance and for being so avoidant: Ginny judges Hermione both for how self-destructive her coping mechanisms seem to be and for not being attentive enough to its effects on the people around them, especially the younger ones Ginny feels so protective towards. Chapter five is as close as either character has come so far to acknowledging this dynamic:

The fury comes quick, rising up in her. ‘You don’t get to decide what’s good for everyone. We are perfectly capable of deciding whether we want to hear all of this shit - ’ ‘Burying their heads in the sand isn’t going to fix anything. They need to know, they need to know what went on - ’ ‘You think they don’t know?’ She points angrily at the other Gryffindors staring at the two of them, blood rising to her face. ‘You think they don’t know what went on?’

At this point in the fic, we can speculate about what Hermione's going through. She's been made Head Girl of a student body who lived a very different war to hers - both were traumatising, but in different ways. She's already troubled by the direction postwar wizarding society seems to be moving in, from what she's heard on the wireless, a society she just fought hard to rescue but which has consistently rejected her on account of being Muggleborn. She's on top of her school-work, still, but worrying about exams that are objectively months away (also, back to worrying about school and exams after a literal war - school that was always, in part, about her proving her abilities and right to belong in the wizarding world). She's sat in Defence lessons with a much more intense and acute knowledge of the material earned in exceptionally traumatising circumstances. She's very lonely. She's separated from the two people she's closest to, Harry and (especially) Ron, after this extremely intense year together, and right after her and Ron have finally found their way to each other, after so long. Her and Ginny used to be close, in an adolescent, fair-weather friendship kind of way, but the year they've spent apart has taken them in such different directions, especially with friendship groups. While Ginny, at least, seems to have some downtime via a much closer friendship with Hannah and Luna after sixth year together, her time helping out Hagrid, and even the support of the Quidditch team (even if she's avoiding them rn), Hermione seems to have no close friends around, only a fellow Head Boy she likes well enough but has never been close to, and who actually was sent to Azkaban for being Muggleborn, whereas Hermione was not. Even Crookshanks is giving her the cold furry shoulder, and, so far, we've seen her go to London at the first chance she got, something Ginny was hugely envious of. We know she did this, both to see Ron and Harry, but also to see her parents, who we know are back from Australia and living in the UK, but who we don't know much about (yet).

Downstairs, Hermione’s sat — of course — by the wireless. Her hair’s pinned back from her face, her blouse is pretty, fitted, and she’s wearing her new scarf, though the common room’s much too warm for it. But her face is grave, eyes closed as she listens to a woman’s tearful voice whispering down the airwaves. ‘I thought - I thought I’d lose my daughter - ’

Hermione absolutely isn't a cruel or unkind person. You're completely right that she absolutely doesn't mean to upset the other students by subjecting them to the wireless every night. But she truly believes it's important, politically and morally, for them to listen to the Greyback victims and to see these huge ethical faultlines that run throughout wizarding society, that began long before Voldemort and threaten to continue after him. She and Ginny just have very different ideas, at this point, about what's best for the students of Hogwarts. The thing that's interesting about writing this arc (I talked a bit about this here) is that, in the same situation, I'd be much more of a Hermione than I would be a Ginny, for better or worse. I'm desperately trying to tread the line between respecting that neither character is coming from a malicious place, and that neither is truly right or wrong in this situation, just showcasing that they both came into the war as very different people and are even more different on the other side of it. There's so much more to come on Hermione, I swear. The scene between the two of them at the end of chapter three is still one of my favourites I've written on who Hermione and Ginny are to each other, playing around with the memory of their past closeness, the things they're not talking about that they have in common, and the idea that these two have the potential for real arcs of growth and development through their friendship that Harry and Ron get in the canon series, but that the young women of the series also deserve, too.

‘Little Women?’ ‘It’s a Muggle book. My mum used to read it to me, when I was little. It’s about sisters during the American Civil War.’ ‘What’s so little about them?' She peers at the cover. 'They look quite normal-sized there. Are they gnome sisters, or what?’ Hermione manages a smile this time. ‘It just means they’re young, I think. Not quite grown-up women yet.’
