Sketchbook dump
Part 2 of a little project in watercolors on NZ birds. I lovelovelovelove the NZ birds, they are just too cute. Already missing the parrots.
I wanted to make these into some simplified designs and into stickers but this has proven quite challenging. Those ones right here I quite messy already as like the paper looks so dirtyyyy but overall I am quite pleased with them.
The only one left to do is the bird of the century, the puteketeke hehe.

Grey homburg hat that was left somewhere.
Little terrific demon who loves fallen humans like a law of gravity. He never goes out without a hat.

some piwakawakas/fantails drawn in the wake of my new zealand trip, back in 2016. I really love these little angry-lookin dudes, they are SO small and they have SUCH a tiny peep but they have SUCH intense eyebrows. delightful. i’ll take 10

This is my best photo (so far) of a piwakawaka (NZ fantail). I'm immensely fond of them, they are an inquisitive bird that will come to see if any passing humans might be kicking up something interesting to eat, so there is always a good chance to see them when walking somewhere you know they are (like one of our native bush reserves) but they flit around so rapidly that I gave up on catching them with my cell phone camera.
This was my first walk in Riccarton Bush (a managed predator free native bush section in Christchurch) with my DSLR camera. There were a few piwakawaka taunting me from in the trees but only one came close enough to the path for me to try and photograph them, and they still hid in the trees.
It's going to take much more practice before I manage to get what feels like a good photo of one and I'm tempted to make this a running gag...

I can't tell if the various recent shitshows have extended this depressive episode, or if me sulking so much is confirmation that we're nearing the end of this depressive episode

ok, for a bit of context:
I like to leave out bowls of sugar water and bird cakes (dried insect, berries, vegetable fat etc) to encourage the local birdlife to relax in my backyard. The little guys, like tui and piwakawaka
...only its been working too well, and now a gang of about 10 native forest parrots have decided its an awesome place to hang out
Kaka are endangered, about the size of cats, with the approximate intelligence of a 4yo child. These ones are also getting increasingly brave around me
They make me smile 🌸😊
(The beak comment at the start was me identifying both these two as male, I'm pretty sure!)

i love kiwis so much. they're so big. i've always wanted to hold one and snuggle them close because they're so fluffy but i would never touch one because they are too precious and also too violent. these fuckers would kick my teeth out. peck my fingers. i once witnessed two kiwi try to tear each other to shreds. lemme tell ya, these fuckers hiss like pissed-off cats and are just as blood-thirsty. if they could fly they'd be swooping people like magpies in aussie do.
Tumblr media
kea are my favourite bird hands down. their cries make me wanna tear up from happiness like i am so lucky to live in the same country as these fuckers. they will tear and rip and shred everything i own to pieces and i will fucking let them because that's so based of them. they're just little balls of fun and destruction, they're just like me fr. i wanna be re-incarnated as one of these fuckers.
Tumblr media
weka are like the angstier teenage version of kea tbh. they're like if a kea made an edgy YA novel oc. they're just as chaotic and destructive but they're not playful, they're like an angsty vigilante's who steal food from wheelie bins to feed their chicks or whatever. their cries are annoying as fuck but in a cool way. i love these fuckers sm.
Tumblr media
if you haven't heard the noises these motherfuckers make you are missing out. tui aren't my favourite bird but they come fucking close. favourite bird call ever. also their feathers look like paua shells so. epic bird right there.
Tumblr media
kereru look like they're wearing wifebeaters and honestly they look like every dad in media ever. pair these fuckers with a screwdriver, a beer can and a tv remote and boom you've got the dad bird. nothing is as frightening as wandering around in the new zealand bush all quiet enjoying the sounds of the piwakawaka or whatever and suddenly you've getting swooped by one of these. that's trauma right there.
Tumblr media
pukeko. dumbass bird. we ran into some today who did not understand the concept of road safety. we slowed down to like 5 km/h and tried to herd them off the road and they ran closer to the car. to be fair i've witnessed these fuckers fight each other and they're about as violent as kiwi.

wAIT HOLY SHIT SINCE YOU LIVE IN NEW ZEALAND I NEED TO ASK YOU THIS.
HAVE YOU SEEN A WILD KIWI BIRD.
THIS IS SERIOUS.
- 🔌
Okay so most people here will probably tell you the same thing but unless you live in a really rural part of the country your chances of seeing one in the wild are slim to none, theyre nocturnal and pretty rare as is I've never seen one in the wild and i've never seen one fully either, you can see them in zoos here but they're in the dark and very hard to see the footage there is a video of a kiwi exhibit I went to a few months back see how it looks like it was recorded in chernobyl? That's about as much kiwi as you're gonna see
I wouldn't plan a trip to Aotearoa with the intentions of seeing a kiwi first hand cause even though you can in a zoo setting you're not gonna see them running around the place like hedgehogs
As for wildlife we actually see day to day thats native here at least in the areas I live in, Tūī, piwakawaka, ruru (native owl) Kererū (native pigeon), wētā (some of the largest insects in the world) and korimako one of my personal favourites for how they sing :) As for non natives you'll also see A LOT of Pūkeko they're technically from Australia but uhhh mine now. You'll recognise them from this meme which has a baby one in it, they're the guys that are running around everywhere
Tumblr media
I've also seen orcas, whales and various seals around. I heard in some places Elephant seals come up from the beach and into nearby towns. I see royal spoonbills Kōtuku ngutupapa here too, those guys are just... there. Like this one in a storm drain I saw a couple years back and snapped a picture of
