Members of Congress from both sides of the aisle tonight are lambasting the Biden administration for not getting Congressional approval before moving ahead with military strikes against Houthi targets in Yemen.[...]
“The President needs to come to Congress before launching a strike against the Houthis in Yemen and involving us in another middle east conflict. That is Article I of the Constitution. I will stand up for that regardless of whether a Democrat or Republican is in the White House,” posted California Democratic Rep. Ro Khanna on X, just as news was breaking that the strikes were in progress. Some 30 minutes earlier, there were reports that Congressional leaders were given a heads up that the strikes were a go.
“Only Congress has the power to declare war,” posted Kentucky Republican Rep. Thomas Massie. “I have to give credit to @RepRoKhanna here for sticking to his principles, as very few are willing to make this statement while their party is in the White House.”[...]
“@POTUS is violating Article I of the Constitution by carrying out airstrikes in Yemen without congressional approval,” charged Michigan Democrat Rashida Tlaib. “The American people are tired of endless war.” Democratic Reps. Cori Bush, Val Hoyle, Mark Pocan, and Pramila Jayapal weighed in similarly as of 9 p.m. tonight.
On the Republican side, Sen. Mike Lee, who has often crossed the aisle on war powers issues, also gave Khanna a boost. “The Constitution matters, regardless of party affiliation.”
"The Constitution is clear, only Congress has the power to declare war. President Biden must come to Congress and ask us to authorize this act of war," posted Florida Republican Rep. Anna Luna.[...]
“These attacks have endangered U.S. personnel, civilian mariners, and our partners, jeopardized trade, and threatened freedom of navigation,” Biden said. “I will not hesitate to direct further measures to protect our people and the free flow of international commerce as necessary.”
The Houthis have said they would continue the attacks until “crimes in Gaza stop and food, medicines and fuel are allowed to reach its besieged population.” The Biden administration, which has not supported a ceasefire in Gaza, said it would hit back hard if the Houthis did not stand down. After a particularly heavy volley of drones and rockets on Tuesday, the administration made its move.
This has a lot of analysts worried about escalation — something the Biden administration said it didn't want. "If the objective is to stop Houthi attacks without escalating matters toward a full war, then bombing them has proven quite inefficient in the past. Just ask the the Saudis," said the Quincy Institute's Trita Parsi, on X, referring to the Yemen civil war in which the Houthis gained major victories despite routine missile bombardments from U.S.-backed Saudi Arabia.
"Moreover, bombing them very likely will escalate matters, which means that not only will the attacks not be stopped, but the broader war that Biden [allegedly] seeks to prevent will likely become a reality."

Safe and Sound!
Thanks to those of you who checked on why I hadn’t posted in over 24 hours. His hotel‘s Wi-Fi is so bad. One bar at the most and everything keeps disconnecting. But it’s a new day I’m going to try again. This Airbnb is fine. It is more like a hotel than an Airbnb. It is very simple, certainly no Akrotiri. But it is fine. I have a nice patio a comfortable bed, and a clean bathroom. But I will mention that a group of ? 20 year olds came in at 1:38 this morning literally screaming at the top of their lungs. I feel sorry for the families are staying here. I just got up and took a NyQuil. New ferry new island. Naxos. Yesterday waked old town...I bet everyone is getting tired of seeing photos of white buildings, blue doors, and bougainvilleas! But the other choice would be cats in doorways, windows, streets, sun, etc...I am going to stick with white. Walked to edge of town to the “magical gate” it is called, Portara...or, the Great Door, or the Doorway to Nowhere. Made of marble, built as a temple to Apollo, but was never finished. The doorway faces the place of Apollo’s birthplace. Naxos was ruled by the Venetians in the mid-500 BC time, when this was being built...but the Turks conquered them and took apart the temple to build a castle...but the door was too massive to destroy, so it still stands. Supposed to have the same type of “magic” that Sedona has...when you are there you are calmed and centered...etc.
Then though the maze of streets and up up up to the castle...which everyone talks about, but no one mentions you can’t go in the castle! So hot, I stopped at cafe at the top which overlooked the city and had my first Greek coffee. I thought I would hate it, but actually really good. It is the consistency of chalky hot chocolate, and comes in a tiny pot to pour from. Before they make it they ask how much sugar you want. None, some, or a lot, I went for some. The sugar goes in when they make it not after you get it. And no cream. And very strong. Very very strong. Actually, it was really good and it kept me awake until of course I went to the beach.
Kept walking, everyone here seems to be a jewelry designer. There is jewelry, unique jewelry, to be bought everywhere I’ve met the artist named Yanni. After admiring his symbolic jewelry, I can’t really explain it, so I’m not going to try. But there’s a picture.
Back to room around 5:30, changed and walked to beach. I think tomorrow I will search for a more remote beach. Possibly even take the bus to one. This is was your typical locals and tourists gather and pay lots of money for food and drinks and fill the ocean with children. Fortunately I was there late enough in the day that they did not charge me for my chair, they did not make me order anything, and most of the families left so the ocean emptied out. Normally you have to spend 30 euros to use a chair! This water is supposed to be warmer but I think it’s colder than Parros. I read, slept, then when things cleared out around 7:00, I went into the ocean.
Walked back quickly, jumped in the pool for my shower, and headed out to try to catch the sunset. This is the first sunset, actual sunset I have seen in Greece. It was beautiful but you don’t get to see the sun dip into the ocean because it goes behind Paros. But the pictures are not filtered and beautiful nonetheless. I was the only one who clapped when the sun went down. Haha. I looked like the crazy woman.
Next dinner. Moussaka and Greek salad with “Naxos famous cheese”. This was more sour, almost like two scoops of goat cheese. When I said to the waiter, “oh my gosh that’s a lot of cheese” he said “you can’t get too much cheese.” Well, I think you actually can... after dinner he brought me a shot glass of homemade yogurt, made in the restaurant. Aside from the stuffed calamari, I think this is the best thing I’ve had in Greece. It was amazing. home at 11:00! My jet lag will be so bad!
Today, I might go to a village in the center of the island, Chalki. It’s known for liquor that is only made on this island. Called Kitron. The liquor taste like orange, I had some samples yesterday, but it is made from the leaves of the tree not the fruit. The distillery is the only one of its kind. Also, this town is known for its many hiking trails. It has to cool down a lot for me to hike but it is a possibility too. Or I might bus to beaches.
I wonder if this were actually ever post on to Tumblr. My pictures too. That was my first of three days in Naxos. Over and out.

Board Games Wishlist (2021 Update)
So, I’ve been playing video games and there definitely will be a list highlighting some of them at the end of the year, but I haven’t been in touch with new releases and my attention shifted towards strategy games and city builders in particular. I spent quite a few hours on Crusader Kings 2 and Imperator: Rome too.  Playing this kind of games got me closer to thinking about game design and narratives they present and slowly I moved back to watching reviews of board games and coming up with a prototype of my own, which I hopefully manage to transform into something to at least playtest later this year. If I get into that phase, I def will post pictures here. I’m still not that interested in playing board games myself, but I’m more interested in owning few now. So, my biggest concerns are graphic design and box sizes. Interesting mechanics or good flavour only come second. I’m making this list to showcase how my tastes developed over the last 2 years and to spotlight some newer designs, which influenced my own creativity. Out of roughly 30 games I find very intriguing, I decided to spotlight several in $100 challenge inspired by Board Game Barrage. I managed to include five smaller games, which I find to form a diverse starting collection. I used Game Nerdz for pricing, so It probably would cost slightly more locally. In addition to that this post includes a list of 10 other games I find myself attracted to for various reasons.
Pictures used in this article: 1) In the Hall of the Mountain King - Source: Burnt Island Games, 2) Fjords - Source: Board Game Geek, user Jacek Nowak, 3)Escape from the Aliens in Outer Space - Source: Board Game Geek, user Alessandro Fibbi

$100 Board Game Collection
I approached this challenge slightly differently than the BGB crew. My list doesn’t have a crunchy big game accompanied by several lighter games. All games on this list play fast and have a fairly easy set of rules. Two of these games are 2 players only and they’re all filled with tasty decisions and loads of strategy. The rest is a filler and a lighter pick up and delivery game from Reiner Knizia. Two of the games on the list aren’t properly out yet, but I believe they would fit my list perfectly.
1. Coup - I’m a fan of social deduction and hidden roles games and this one is a super easy one to pick up with nice illustrations and small packaging. I think games like this need a specific group of people, who are more into playing a game than usual social activities such as chatting or dancing, but It might be a good opener for silent groups with its high level of interaction, leading to a more interesting evening. Price at Nerdz: $11
2. Targi - Overall, I find worker placement games on the drier side. This one intrigues me because of how tight it is and before as a 2 player game, it offers more confrontation than competition. The new printing made it widely available at a very affordable price point. The small box and Berber theming are good too. Price at Nerdz: $14
3. Hive Pocket - This game is a classic and it could be easy to play it with people instead of chess. Hive consisting of sturdy tokens in a sack makes it a perfect companion for travels too. I find it that stranded far away from home, it’s way easier to have a good opportunity to play something as comforting as a board game. Price at Nerdz: $21
4. Whale Riders - An obligatory Reiner Knizia pick. It was a tough decision among several games, but I ultimately ended up siding with this pick up and delivery game, which even isn’t out yet. It puts interesting pressure on players, it plays in thirty minutes and looks awesome. The core mechanisms are something I wanted to have on this list yet. I heard that it is a tight design, maybe slightly less fulfilling than popular Knizia games, but given it’s playtime I wouldn’t worry too much about that. Price at Nerdz: $21
5. Fjords - The new edition of Fjords is currently being kickstarted and it looks gorgeous. It’s a very simple design, close to an abstract game. The first phase is tile laying, the second is go-like area control. I think this might be an excellent game to start playing very quickly and get invested into without complex mechanics obscuring possible strategies. The basic pledge on Kickstarter is $26 and It’s expected for the retail version to be more expensive (I would assume somewhere in the middle between estimated $40 and $26). The new version replaces tokens from the picture below with viking meeples and beautifies the tiles. Tbh, I find the look of the old version good with an exception of its box cover.
Tumblr media
Osprey Games
This category stayed from the previous list. I still like fairly unified small boxes of theirs and their excellent design. They are all relatively small and fast playing. The themes aren’t as niche as some other games on this list and that should make it easier to play them with other players too. Finally, It should be fairly easy to order all four of them as a batch. Either from one of the local resellers or directly for slightly higher prices.
1. Cryptid - Cryptid is here for its sweet look and as a game I would find easy to show other people than gamers. It’s very abstract and I think that its components could be used to create your own games too. As a teacher I might use this in class to learn children about game design. Obviously, playing the deduction game might be a lot of fun and a good brain exercise too.
2. Escape from the Aliens in Outer Space - Again, this game has great graphic design and presents a different kind of experience. This is a hidden movement game, in which aliens and humans have asymmetric win conditions. The sparse presentation helps the game to build up a dense atmosphere. It’s very close to being more of a role playing game without a need to roleplay. I think I would enjoy this stressful experience a lot.
3. The King is Dead - is a simple area control game, which plays very quickly and by limiting players’ actions to an absolute minimum, makes every decision interesting. It’s a good vehicle for creating tension and players trying to influence each other into actions. The game has a dedicated community and you can find interesting homemade versions.
4. The Lost Expedition - and yet another fairly minimalist game with interesting mechanics and immersive look. In case of The Lost Expedition the game is at its best as a harsh solo survivor. You’re trying to get through the jungle and discover El Dorado. I love that it managed to capture the atmosphere of The Lost City of Z and despite its limited mechanics it looks like it succeeds at creating great emergent narratives and loads of friction.
Tumblr media
Other Games
These are various bigger games I find interesting. The reasons for me liking them differ quite a bit. In this category themes and mechanics are usually more of a reason for me to include them than presentation or size of boxes. All of them are too big anyway.
5. In the Hall of the Mountain King - This game is here for a special reason. I heard about it on Youtube, liked its board and theme, but also kinda disliked some of the mechanics. So, I started reading more about it, watched a playthrough and that led to me getting inspired and starting working on my own design, which takes a lot of inspiration from it. In the end, I still find the two main mechanics of the game slightly disconnected, scoring too complicated and spells unnecessary, but I also ended up liking the game a lot and I’m actually planning on buying it asap. The creators put a lot of love into it and the way you gather resources via a cascade of trolls looks like a great innovation. The parts I like the most happen on the board, tho. I find moving of statues and building of great halls very thematic and unfortunately kind of earthed by other mechanisms.
6. Coal Barons - After starting working on my design, I got more interested in mining games. There are only few interesting ones and alongside In the Hall of the Mountain King, Coal Barons from my favourites Kiesling and Kramer looks the best. It combines worker placement with action points  and set collection in superbly thematic fashion. Mining different kinds of coal and loading them on trucks and trains feels like fun in this game. The other thing I love is that despite various actions you can take, the game is fairly tight and simple. Everything makes sense, rounds are fast and diverse scoring helps you to plan your next steps. I hope I’ll manage to find an older copy of this or that they’ll reprint it.
7. Tikal - Yes, It’s another Kiesling and Kramer and the first game of their Mask Trilogy. Mechanisms of this one also fueled by action points and actions you can take simple and confrontational. I like the theme and its table presence too. Unfortunately, getting hands on this one right now is fairly difficult, but there’s always hoping for a reprint of the Super Meeple edition of the game.
8. Akrotiri - is a two player game from the designer of In the Hall of the Mountain King. The game has two main components. The first one is exploration driven tile laying and the second is pickup and deliver mechanic. Basically, you compete as traders in this very stylized ancient sea. It feels like the game is very tight and that it offers enough paths to victory for good replay ability. I’m mostly interested in fairly simple rules and the game being faster than many other trading games with worse table presence. Together with Fjords, these two games feel like much better replacements for Carcassonne.
9. Yellow and Yangtze - I definitely wanted a second Reiner Knizia game on the list and after some consideration I decided to go with this one. Firstly, I like the cover and most of its components. Secondly, It would create a nice section of Grail Games in my library. That might be visually appealing too. I chose it over Tigris and Euphrates mostly for these two reasons as the older game seems to be preferred for its clarity by most Knizia fans. Still, It’s widely agreed that this is a great sequel full of confrontation and interesting choices.
10. The Great Zimbabwe - Splotter games are known for several things. They’re expansive, usually out of print and they have a specific esthetic. They’re also very highly regarded. The Great Zimbabwe is getting a reprint this year and after watching the video below I got super hooked in. It’s mechanics are deep, clever and among other games fairly unique. I also like the theme and thematic ties being present. I even like the look of the board and wooden components on it. If I had money to spare, I probably would pre-order it.

The Best Beaches in Santorini, Greece
Linkedin Instagram Twitter Website Google Plus Trip Adviser You Tube Pinterest
Reddit Tumblr Mediumm Flickr Blog Behance Infonid
Santorini is a firm fixture in people's minds when it comes to Greek Island getaways, but it's not renowned for its beaches. Think Santorini and it's more likely that you'll picture white buildings with blue trims, luxury cliffside accommodation and those famous Santorini sunsets. And while it's true that you'll find better beaches on other Greek islands, that doesn't mean a visit to Santorini can't fulfil your shore-seeking desires. The beaches here are volcanic and run the gamut of colours and types, from rocky coves to classic gold to red and even black sand. To help you plonk yourself on the right stretch of sand, here's our guide to the best beaches in Santorini.
Perissa
Perissa Beach is a striking strip of black sand one of the best beaches in Santorini for lazy sunbathing. Situated at the base of Mesa Vouno Mountain, it’s easy to get here via bus from the main town of Fira (13km away). Perissa is always popular, and there are plenty of lounge chairs to accommodate all (expect to pay or buy your drinks and snacks from the same place in exchange), as well as lots of facilities, like showers, and a playground for kids. If you're into watersports you can get your fix here, with everything from parasailing to wind surfing and more. Perissa has a range of beach cafes, bars and restaurants and attracts a lively crowd, from families to backpackers.
Perivolos
Santorini’s Perivolos Beach is essentially a continuation from Perissa, so it’s got a very similar look, with black sand plus deep and clear water. You'll find similar facilities too, from watersports to sun loungers. If anything, Perivolos has a younger vibe than Perissa, with plenty of nightlife on offer. Still, if you’re keen to find a quieter spot, that won’t be a problem, just head downstream from the main drag.
Red Beach
With its vivid blue water enclosed by red rock formations and red-pink volcanic pebbles and sand, Santorini's Red Beach (or Kokkini Paralia in Greek) is definitely one of the most unique and beautiful on the island. It's located close to the village of Akrotiri (there's an ancient Minoan site nearby that's worth stopping at) and just 11km from Fira. The walk down to the beach from the carpark is a little unsteady along a steep gravel path, but it's only for a few minutes and the views you're rewarded with are well worth the effort . Make sure to stock up on food and water before you set out, as there are no facilities at the beach apart from back-to-basics reading, swimming and snorkeling (bring your mask!).
Kamari
Remember when we mentioned Mesa Vouno Mountain earlier? Well, on the other side of that same mountain you'll find Kamari Beach. Kamari has full facilities and a quieter feel than either Perivolos or Perissa, though there's still has enough beach bars to keep you entertained. For families, it’s one of the best beaches in Santorini, with a promenade that’s great for a stroll lined with shops and restaurants.
Vlychada
Otherwise known as ‘White beach’ because of its unique pale rock formations that look like sculptures in the cliff face, Vlychada Beach is another gem in the southeast of the island and easily one of the best beaches in Santorini. You won’t find any watersports or noisy bars or restaurants here – the vibe is very relaxed. It's well set up for visitors, with sun loungers, umbrellas, and a café, and it’s easily accessible from Fira by bus (13km away).
Ammoudi Bay
Not technically a beach, but one of the best swimming spots in Santorini and something a bit different for your time on the island. From the town of Oia take the path down to Ammoudi port, turn left and walk along the water's edge until you encounter a small bay with rocks. These are perfect launchpad for jumping into the clear water – as you'll no doubt see from the many other people doing just that. There's also a small island to swim out to for stunning views of Santorini.

Landscape Paintings: Brief History
Landscape paintings are one of the most tried and true art forms. Artists have tried to capture the world around them since the beginning of time. That being said, the art form has definitely evolved over the centuries to become the concept it’s known as today. From a mountain landscape painting to a beautiful sunset, this is a brief history of landscape paintings.
What Defines a Landscape Painting?
A landscape painting is generally accepted as a piece of art that focuses on natural scenery. While some landscape paintings feature human or manmade components but they aren’t the focal point of the painting. Common themes include mountainscapes, bodies of water, skyscapes, forests, coastlines, and more.
The First Landscape Paintings
While paintings of natural scenery have been around since the drawings that humanity’s prehistoric ancestors drew the sun on cave walls, the concept of landscape paintings as they’re known today first came about during the Classical periods and in ancient cultures such as those of Rome and Greece.
The modern concept of landscape paintings as a genre all their own, at least by the opinion of Western art historians, came about during the Renaissance period in which the genre was first labeled for what it was as it was created rather than retroactively. This occurred during the 16th century with artists such as Raphael, Michelangelo, and Da Vinci at the height of their careers.
In Eastern art historians’ opinions, the organized idea of landscape paintings as a genre is much older. With Eastern art history included in the full span of landscape artistry, the genre can be traced back to China in the 4th century.
Introduction of Landscape as an Artistic Term
While there is a debate, especially in the concept of Eastern vs. Western art, when the genre of landscape paintings began, the word “landscape” itself has artistic origins.
The English term was created for works of art around the beginning of the 17th century – well after even the accepted Western conception of the genre as a whole. It came into the English language as an anglicized version of a similar Dutch word, “landschap.”
A Classical Introduction of Landscape Paintings
One of the first recorded landscape paintings in Western history is from the Bronze Age. The piece was on a settlement in Santorini, a Greek volcanic island. The painting was a fresco in Akrotiri and, similarly to the likes of Pompeii, much of the island was covered and impressively preserved under the volcanic ash following an eruption. The eruption occurred in 1627 B.C. and the painting was found only relatively recently.
Landscape Paintings In Ancient Egypt
Ancient Egypt wasn’t left out of the artistic draw of landscapes either. Much of the landscape work done here wasn’t the focal point but rather as a background. For instance, paintings on the Nile often depicted hunters working as focal points on an exquisite background.
When landscapes were meant to be the focus, the idea of a broad, generalized landscape wasn’t the popular go-to. Instead, artists of this time often focused on details such as singular plant formations.
Ancient Egyptian art also showed early signs of a scaling technique in landscape painting. This was a way to give an image depth even when that image was recreated on a flat, two-dimensional plane.
Landscape Paintings in the Renaissance Era
During the Renaissance, landscape paintings became more popular because of their increased realism.
This partially thanks to the geometric advancements such as the concept of the ability to use lines of dimensions to create a more realistic scaling of the appearance of options in the foreground and background. This was a clear advancement on previously held scaling techniques such as those use in Ancient Egypt.
The idea that this leaned on was the idea of perspective or, in the then-modern Latin, perspicere. In other words, artists put a more mathematically advanced effort into conveying what they saw in front of them on a flat canvas or fresco.
Landscapes and Theme
One thing that often changes the appearance of a landscape painting is the theme alongside the style. For instance, in the 19th century, painters who focused on landscapes often used a more calming and realistic theme from a low perspective. This allowed them to capture a broader image of the landscape including the sky above.
In other art forms, such as narrative paintings, landscapes were used as a theme to push a more dramatic story. This was common in Biblically-themed paintings that had a dramatic flair.
Conclusion
Over time, the techniques of landscape paintings and the styles and artists who adopted them have changed. Even abstract art has taken the concept of landscape paintings and deconstructed them from the painstakingly picture-perfect accuracy of artists from eras such as the Renaissance. All in all, there’s a lot of art to explore, so don’t hesitate to look deeper into the genre of landscape paintings and the artists who made their name for this muse.

Things to do in santorini
Santorini is the dreamy, romantic, drop-dead gorgeous bucket list location that better be on everyone’s list. We visited Santorini for our honeymoon (as cliché as we could be). We saw a few other Greek islands but hands down – Santorini is the winner! There are so many things to do in Santorini that you are bound to have a great time.
The island is intimately small allowing visitors to easily explore every corner while enjoying the views of the breath-taking Aegean Sea. And by breath-taking, I mean – your jaw will be open in absolute amazement.
In this blog you will find almost all-important things you HAVE to do in Santorini.
Put on your comfy shoes and a photo-op-worthy outfit – we’re going to explore Santorini!
IMAGE CREDITS: ALEKSANDAR PASARIC ON PIXELS
LIST
1. TAKE A YACHT RIDE TO THE VOLCANIC ISLANDS
Sounds fancy, doesn’t it? Taking the yacht ride was one good decision and we highly recommend it.
You can sign up for a tour (there are too many options to choose from) or you can take a private boat and sail by yourself (taking a private boat will mean a deep hole in your pocket)
The tour generally takes you around the volcanic island where you can see an active volcano, swim in a hot spring, watch the Red Beach, Lighthouse, etc
This tour is available through various vendors with a variety of options like duration (4-8 hours), budget (ranging from 80-1400 Euros per person) and mood (romantic, party, adventure, etc). These rides happen in two shifts one is in the morning and one is for the sunset (personally the sunset slot is more romantic). Click here to know more

2. WINE NOT?
Wine production in Santorini is an ancient tradition and it’s not a secret that the volcanic soil produces a unique taste of wine.
You can opt for a wine tour or get there yourself.
If you take the tour, your tour operator will take you around a couple of  different wineries and explain the history and the wine making process followed by wine tasting (honestly, most of these places are similar so going to any one or two winerys would suffice).
If you want to explore on your own ,which we recommend, you could go to Santo Wines and/or Venetsanos winery. They not only have great wine and winemaking tour but also breathtaking views. Click here to know more

3. SANTORINI HELICOPTER TOUR
This is pretty close to unforgettable. A wonderful tour above Santorini, the volcano, the caldera, and all the villages perched along the cliff.
If you’re going to Mykonos you can also do a helicopter transfer between Santorini and Mykonos – which is fun, easy, and way faster than the ferry.
PHOTO BY ANDREAS NEXTVOYAGEPL ON UNSPLASH
4. JET SKI TOUR TO THE VOLCANO
An insanely fun and unique way of seeing the caldera.
There are different tours that go different places – all leave from Perivolos in the south of the island.
The shortest tour (“South Tour”) visits nearby Red Beach and White Beach and lasts about 90 minutes.
The medium-length (“Volcano Tour”, 140 minutes) goes all the way into the caldera and stops for a swim in the hot springs by the volcano.
The longest tour (“Extreme Volcano Tour”, 200 minutes) takes the volcano tour and adds Thirassia and Ammoudi Bay.
The tours that go into the caldera are pretty intense and the waves can be big.
There’s a motorboat with the tour the whole way so if someone needs a break they can switch to the boat and one of the staff will ride the jet ski.
5. SANTORINI KAYAK TOUR
Wonderfully fun! The Morning Tour and Sunset Tour explore the south coast of Santorini (cool but you don’t get to see the caldera).
The Lighthouse Tour goes into the caldera and provides incredible views of the caldera cliffs.
The tour generally starts at Akrotiri Beach. Most tour operators provide pick up  and drop-off service from your accommodation.
PHOTO BY SERGIO SOUZA FROM PIXELS
6. WALK THE VOLCANO
The island in the middle of the caldera is Nea Kameni and that’s where you’ll find the island’s active volcano and the top point of interest in Santorini.
The crater is 130 meters up and takes about 20 minutes to walk.
Sulfur vents are found along the way.
The only way to get here is by doing a volcano boat tour or hiring a chartered boat.
PHOTO BY JIMMY TEOH FROM PEXELS
7. SWIM AT AMMOUDI BAY
One of the best swimming spots on Santorini is down the cliff from Oia at a spot just south of the Ammoudi port.
Walk or drive to Ammoudi Bay then take the path that leads south from the restaurants in the port (can’t miss it, there’s only one way to go).
It’s a 5 minute walk to a small island (Agios Nikolaos) that you can swim out to. Then jump from the ledge (if you want).
PHOTO BY ELENA ZHURAVLEVA FROM PEXELS
8. SWIM IN THE HOT SPRINGS
Jump from the boat into the cold water of the caldera then swim towards the warm water of the volcanic hot springs, talk about adventure and having fun!
It never gets hot but it’s warm enough to never feel the need to get out. The only way to get to the hot springs is by doing a boat tour.
9. RED BEACH
Just down the road from the Akrotiri ruins, Red Beach is the most spectacular and picturesque of any Santorini beach.
From the bus stop or car park it’s about a 15 minute walk to the beach. (Sometimes closed due to the risk from falling rock, please check before you go and proceed at your own risk.)
PHOTO BY ZORAN ZONDE STOJANOVSKI ON UNSPLASH
10. DRIVE OR RIDE AROUND THE ISLAND.
We drove around the entire island, from one end to the other TWICE.
We stopped at a few beaches, ate lunch, took a million photos and ended the day in Oia to watch the sunset.
It’s such a liberating feeling to do whatever you want and, in another country, serious double whammy of freedom. No tour guides, no waiting on public transportation. Talk about an amazing moment
If you do nothing else but this while visiting Santorini, you’ll still have the best damn time ever. This is such a must-do, can’t say it enough.
Tips:
Before hunting down a place to rent your car, ask your hotel if they can help. This will save lots of time & trouble.
The average cost is 70 euros for an entire day rental and can go up to 200 euros if you like something fancier. We paid around 90 euros including fuel for a convertible Mini Cooper.
If you plan on riding after sunset, pack a jacket for the ride home.
Bring a camera, what you’re about to see will blow your mind.
PHOTO BY SANTORINI HOTELS ON PINTEREST
11. STAY AT A CAVE HOTEL ON THE CALDERA
Throughout all my travels, budgeting is always necessary. So we generally don’t spend too much on accommodation, because you won’t really be using the hotel facilities if you are roaming around the entire day.  But we must admit, Santorini is such an exception. We agreed that staying in a beautiful hotel with the postcard view of Santorini was a necessity.
We chose Aqua Luxury Suites & couldn’t be happier. The hotel is truly paradise & set the tone for our entire experience. The staff was lovely, the rooms were clean & just enough space, and the VIEW was out of this world! Also, they serve you breakfast just outside your room on a private dining table with a view to die for. For more details about where to stay in Santorini, please click here
12. STAY IN A WINDMILL
Yes, you heard that right. You can stay on this windmill. It’s the Windmills Suite at Golden Sunset Villas in Oia and it’s pretty incredible.
It sits at the tip of Oia where everyone gathers to watch the sunset – but you have this huge patio with incredible views all to yourself (it can easily fit 20 people if you had friends staying nearby and wanted to host a sunset party).
The bad news: there’s only one true windmill suite in Santorini. – So book early.
13.WATCH THE SUNSET FROM OIA & FIRA
This is a requirement when traveling to Santorini – no ifs no buts about it.
Both locations are prime time sunset-watching so pick your poison. We preferred Fira over Oia because you can see the amazing caldera on your right and a  beautiful volcano in front of you at the same time also you won’t have to pay for overpriced cocktails or fight for a space to watch the sunset in Fira which is definitely the case in Oia. Grab a drink or have a meal while you enjoy the sun go down.
PHOTO BY YU SIANG TEO ON UNSPLASH
14. GREEK FOOD
This goes without saying, right? No matter where you’re traveling to, make it a high priority to seeking out delicious and authentic food.
Most meals are filled with fresh seafood, fresh vegetables, olives, and homemade hummus. Don’t fear, it’s not all healthy though! There are delicious and not so healthy options – like Saganaki and Moussaka (which I highly recommend ordering at every meal).
Remember most places consider seafood as a vegetarian so please be specific about what you want.
Our top recommendation has to be Lucky’s. Pito Gyros in Oia is also good. Please click here to know more about where to eat in Santorini.
PHOTO BY LOUIS HANSEL ON UNSPLASH
15. EXPLORE ON FOOT!
Last but certainly not least, please relax and disconnect from the day to day.two reasons why you must do this are first, you have paid a considerable amount on your amazing caldera accommodation and secondly, there is no better way of exploring and place than on foot. When on foot, you can explore the tiny lanes, and pick up some cute souvenirs and not forget the beautiful pictures you will be able to click!
Enjoy each and every moment of the trip because it’s so incredibly special and breath-taking.
If you find yourself in Santorini or anywhere for that matter, be so thankful & grateful for that opportunity (some people will never get it).

As I settle down to write this post, I glance up to see the crystal blue of the Aegean. In the distance, pale islands rise out of the water. These are the Cyclades and I’m on a massive ferry journeying from the beautiful island of Santorini to the as yet unexplored island of Paros.
The Santorini Palace – Not a small boat
So what of Santorini? Is it all white buildings accented with their famous shade of blue? Well, no. It’s a volcanic remnant of craggy rocks, stony soil and buildings clinging tenuously to the edge of cliffs. It’s also a major leg workout – a constant climb and descent of steps, more steps and steep slopes.
View from Fira
Most of all, though, Santorini is very, very beautiful! The views over the caldera, the coves and hidden beaches, the small tavernas at the water’s edge, all make for picture postcard memories.
Here are a few of our favourite tips, things to do and places to visit:
Getting there
Santorini has an airport so it’s possible to fly there from Athens and various European cities (but not from the other islands). We are, however, on an island-hopping adventure so from Milos we booked a Sea Jet ferry to Santorini.
My advice is to try for the biggest ferry possible. We booked on Sea Jet 2, a small ferry and it was awful! The seats were comfortable enough and the facilities were fine, but the ride, oh the ride!
Seajet 2 (2 means 2 small)
It took off like it was being chased by Poseidon himself, crashing over the waves and throwing us around in our seats. All we could do was close our eyes and pray for the horror to end. Eventually, after 3 hours, it did and we arrived at the port in Santorini well shaken but ready to start the next chapter of our adventure – and what a chapter it was!
Best place to stay
If you are part of the ‘mega-moneyed’ set, which sadly we are not, Oia is without a doubt the place to be.
Our “cosy” room
For the rest of us, Fira is the best base. The range of accommodation is vast so you’re sure to find something to fit your needs and budget. Just remember that Santorini is expensive! We stayed in a tiny room (I mean bed pushed into a corner, climb over each other tiny) on the opposite slope from the caldera for the same price as paid for a spacious junior suite on Milos. (See our post https://thegogoyears.com/milos-the-perfect-greek-island-escape/ )
    Getting around
Fira is the public transport ‘hub’ on Santorini. Getting around by bus is a little chaotic but it’s reliable and relatively cheap and you don’t have to find parking – a huge headache on the island. We caught the bus everywhere and soon learned to master the ‘non-queueing system’ that they seem to favour.
Tip: You have to catch the bus at the main terminus as it doesn’t stop anywhere else in Fira.
Santorini Local Buses at Fira
Day trip to Oia
Every photograph you’ve seen of Santorini was almost certainly taken in Oia. This is where you find the narrow cobbled streets and the pristine blue and white buildings you have been dreaming of.
Spectacular Oia
The narrow pedestrian walkways teem with restaurants, gift shops and restaurants. Look out for the amazing Atlantis Bookshop. It’s a treasure trove of eclectic books. The warm, friendly atmosphere invites you browse at your leisure with no pressure to buy (but you almost certainly will). Its quirky design aesthetic along with the most amazing viewing deck places it firmly in my top 3 favourite bookshops (along with Shakespeare & Co in Paris and Lello’s in Porto). You really shouldn’t visit Santorini without stopping in there.
Atlantis Bookshop – Awesome
Strolling through the town, stopping to listen to buskers, having lunch or a drink, browsing the shops and admiring the spectacular buildings and views along the way is a wonderful way to make memories.
He made the instrument himself!
A day trip here is a must and it’s also the best place on the island from which to view the sunset, preferably with a glass of wine in hand and your love by your side.
Take the cable car from Fira to the old port for dinner.
There’s nothing quite like eating a delicious meal at the water’s edge and that’s what you’ll get at the Old Port. Although there’s not much to see there, it’s lovely way to spend an evening.
Our dinner venue at the Old Port
Tip: Check that you’re not trying to do this when cruise ship passengers are making their way back to their boats … the queues for the cable car can be very long. Normally though, there’s no queue.
The famous Santorini donkeys
Tip: Riding the traditional donkeys or walking down to the port along the footpath may sound like fun but unless you have a strong stomach, maybe rethink this idea. The steps are covered in donkey poo and can be very slippery …ugh!
Water taxi to the red, white and black beaches.
From Fira, you can take the bus to Akrotiri and then a water taxi that’ll transport you to the beaches. We were a little disappointed as they were narrow, mainly pebbles and very crowded. Nonetheless, the coloured volcanic cliffs were magnificent and it’s well worth the trip to see them, if not to swim.
Red Beach
White Beach
Black Beach
Akrotiri is also a wonderful place for lunch at the water’s edge.
Lunch at The Wave
Tip: You can walk to the red beach from Akrotiri but the path is very steep and not worth the effort if you want to take the water taxi to see the black and white beaches as they charge for the round trip to all three.
So to sum up, Santorini is very expensive and it’s crowded but it’s also very beautiful and we’re so glad we included it in our island hopping adventure – you will be too.
Next, we’re off to Paros!
Kate – The GoGo Years
PS. Please share your experience of Santorini or any of the other Greek islands in the comments section. We’d love advice on where to visit next time we’re there.
Sensational Santorini As I settle down to write this post, I glance up to see the crystal blue of the Aegean.

New Post has been published on Wedding in Greece
New Post has been published on https://weddingingreece.com/santorini-the-perfect-photo-session-locations/
Santorini, the perfect photo session locations
Tumblr media
Santorini, the perfect wedding photo locations
If there is a wedding destination in Greece that surpasses any other location, that is definitely the island of Santorini. It is not only the best place for the wedding ceremony you have been dreaming of but also the ideal landscape for a memorable wedding photo session. Actually, this place is one of the most photogenic islands on the planet. Plus, as Santorini loves weddings and offers flexibility when it comes to the destination and wedding type, it is legal to have your ceremony literally anywhere. That means that a professional Santorini wedding photographer can exploit the natural beauty, the alluring scenery and the volcanic atmosphere of the island to the fullest.
Oia – let the wedding magic begin in Santorini:
If you’ve ever seen a postcard or Pinterest image of the island of Santorini, this is the place where it was probably taken. Yes, Oia (pronounced ee-ah) is that picturesque village with the blue-domed churches, cobbled streets and stunning sea views which impress every visitor who first lays eyes on it. The deep blue Aegean Sea perfectly complements the signature blue domes of the many churches scattered around the area and the golden colors of the Greek sunlight; here you have all the makings of a great wedding photography experience.
If you are planning a summertime wedding, keep in mind that as Oia is usually crowded with omnipresent noisy tourists watching the sunset and shouting “Selfie time!” in almost any language you can think of, we can wander along the beautiful footpath from Oia to Fira and catch the sunset from amazing viewpoints without having to deal with the crowds. Well, as the saying goes, there’s more than one way to skin a cat!
Fira, the modern capital of Santorini, and Imerovigli, a charming village which lies to the north of Fira, can also offer beautiful, quiet and secluded places with great sea views for catchy and candid pictures that capture the essence of your special day.
Black beauty: There is a lot more to this island than views of the caldera and whitewashed houses draped with fuchsia bougainvillea. For those who prefer something extraordinary, the pitch-black volcanic sand in Santorini can turn a usual beach-themed wedding into a magical experience. Perivolos and Perissa beaches are the trendiest black-sandy beaches on the island; many unconventional ceremonies are held here, offering a Santorini wedding photographer the chance to get dramatic wedding photographs.
The unique setting of Faros, Akrotiri, Santorini:
The Faros lighthouse in the most southern part of the island offers an astonishing view of the golden Greek sun dipping into the azure Mediterranean waters. This French lighthouse from the 1800s is also the ideal option for postcard-worthy results and an excellent option for those who want to escape the crowds.
Next, to this amazing setting, the famous Red Beach can become the absolute backdrop of impressive photos as its red rock formations and sand form a breathtaking volcanic landscape with a marvelous palette of lavish and contrasting colors that mesmerize all newly-weds and Santorini wedding photographers.
Love is in the… sea: As here it is legal to have your wedding ceremony anywhere, many couples choose to get married on a sailing boat or even a yacht. But even if you won’t opt for a “nautical ceremony”, we can still arrange a wedding photo shoot on board. When it comes to wedding photography in Santorini, we’ll certainly be spoilt for choice with the sensational view that a sailing tour can offer. After all, as they say, you are going to need something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue; in this way, you’ll have something truly blue, not only on your special day but also in your wedding photos. And yes, you are free to get photographed in the famous Titanic poses! This “nautical wedding photo shoot” is also ideal if you do not have time for a photo session on your big day; there is always time the day after the wedding or we could even arrange a pre-wedding session.
So, let’s spice up your wedding shots; you will certainly go back home with the most beloved souvenir of all – a stunning wedding album. Your photo session from the wedding in Santorini will include every important moment from the preparation of you and your spouse-to-be, to the ceremony and the reception.
Eleni Dona wedding photographer told us: “As a professional wedding photographer in Santorini, I will suggest the right places for a perfect wedding photo shoot according to the season, the time and the natural light, and will capture the happiest moments of your special day – while, at the same time, you will have the opportunity to admire not only your loved one but also the island which is said to hide the secrets of Atlantis…”

DREAM TRAVEL DESTINATION I get asked this a lot, if I could go anywhere in the world, where would I go? I have an extensive list of places, activities, and adventures running through my head 24/7. But my number 1 dream is to travel in Santorini (Oia Greece) My dream travel someday would be like this; Spend a full day discovering Santorini’s ancient history, local culture, and famous views on this great-value highlights tour. Explore the Minoan archaeological site at Akrotiri, swim at the black-sand Perissa Beach, and observe traditional island life in the village of Megalochori. And also take in panoramic views from Prophet Elias Monastery, sip volcanic varietals at a winery, and finish the day with an unforgettable sunset from Oia village. The adventures begin late morning with pickup near many island hotels. Head first to the renowned archaeological site of Akrotiri, considered the best-preserved Minoan ruins outside of Crete. Learn about the Bronze Age civilization that thrived here between 3000 and 1500 BC as I explore remnants of an ancient city preserved in ash from the eruption of Mt Thera. Continue on to Perissa Beach, where I can swim and sun on the striking black sand and enjoy lunch nearby during nearly 2 hours of leisure time. Next, get a glimpse of traditional Greek village life as you walk with your guide through the quaint and quiet streets of Megalochori. Climb back aboard the bus for a ride up to the 18th-century Prophet Elias Monastery, situated on the highest point of the island. Although the monastery itself is now closed to visitors, I can still admire sweeping views and snap photos from the church yard. In the evening, relax over tastings of Santorini’s unique volcanic varietals and enjoy a picturesque view of terraced vineyards at Santo Wines, one of the island’s largest and most modern estates. Finally, cap off the day with a visit to Oia village, considered one of the most photogenic places on Earth. Stroll through the narrow streets, browse local boutiques, and catch a spectacular sunset over the caldera. Why I choose to travel in Greece? I have my 5 reasons: FIRST is Safety, Greece remains among the safest countries of the world. The criminality rate is very low, especially in the islands. Feel no fear to walk late at night and have chats with the locals. In fact, this will be among the best pleasures during your Greek holidays. Only in Athens should you have an eye open, as pick-pocketing is usually reported in large queues, for example in buses or when boarding the ferry. But this is not the case in the islands, where you can lay back and enjoy a carefree atmosphere. SECOND, High level of hospitality. Since ever, the warm hospitality is one the main reasons to come to Greece. Feel free to mingle with the locals, have long chats with them or stop them at the street to ask for directions. They love it! Apart from the locals, you will also enjoy high quality of services in the hotels and resorts. THIRD, Country with a past. Even in the smallest piece of land in Greece, you will find a connection to the past. All around the country and the islands, there are ancient sites of various historical periods: from remains of ancient Greek temples to Byzantine monasteries and Neoclassical mansions. FOURT, Healthy and tasty cuisine. Greece is famous for its healthy products, including virgin olive oil, vegetables, fruits, fish, nuts and wine. These products are the basis of the Mediterranean diet, which is rich in proteins and low in saturated fats. These products are cooked together and make delicious dishes. Even in the smallest tavern in Greece, do not hesitate to taste local Greek dishes. They will be totally different than any other ethnic recipe you have tasted so far. And lastly, The holiday of a lifetime. A visit to Greece is the dream holiday of a lifetime. When thinking of holidays, people picture the long crystal Greek beaches and the relaxing beach taverns. But be careful because Greece is addictive: if you have experienced Greek holidays once, no other place on earth will be sufficient for you. This is my dream travel destination. Im so excited to come in Greece someday! Hope to achieved this dream in the future :)
