Vogue Philippines has revealed Apo Whang-Od as the cover star of its April issue, a move that makes the 106-year-old tattoo artist from the Philippines the oldest person ever to appear on the front of Vogue.
Whang-Od — also known as Maria Oggay — has been perfecting the art of hand-tapping tattoos since she was a teen, learning under her father's instruction.
Residing in the mountain village of Buscalan, about 15 hours north of Manila, in Kalinga province, she is considered the country's oldest mambabatok — or traditional Kalinga tattooist.
Once, the hand-tapped tattoos that Whang-Od creates using just a bamboo stick, a thorn from a pomelo tree, water and coal, were earned by indigenous Butbut warriors.
Now, international visitors seeking her signature geometric designs make up much of her clientele.
"Heralded as the last mambabatok of her generation, she has imprinted the symbols of the Kalinga tribe—signifying strength, bravery, and beauty—on the skin of thousands of people who have made the pilgrimage to Buscalan," Vogue Philippines said in a post on social media.

Relentless Toil: A Reading List About Filipino Laborers
“What happens when the only way to ensure the survival of the people you love the most is to leave them behind?” Amy DePaul compiles a reading list on the enormous sacrifices of Filipino laborers at home and abroad.
A strong sense of family duty. Incredible kindness and generosity. Pride. “Such sought-after traits have been a blessing and a curse,” writes Amy DePaul, “giving Filipinas access to the lives of elite families in cities like Hong Kong, Dubai, and New York City, but also subjecting them to highly exploitative and even dangerous situations.” In this new reading list, DePaul recommends five powerful stories on the sacrifices of Filipino laborers, both at home and overseas.

Little vent art and I'm gonna rant a little.
Philippine elections is in 3 days, and for the past weeks we non-legal voters are told to keep our keep our mouth shut about the matter. Of course that doesn't stop many of the youth to speak up, but being told that our opinions don't matter is just unfair.
Do you know how scary this whole thing is? How people are openly choosing corrupt people to lead a country?
No. Because for 21 years, my parents, my people, did not endure a tyrant, a dictator, a murderer, and a thief, only for you to tell me to shut up.
We will never ever let that happen again.

“Lechon”
Chefs began utilizing bigger pigs as demand for Lechon increased; the word "Lechon" is derived from the Spanish word "Leche," which means "milk." Lechon is now just a pig that has been carefully grilled over open flames. Although the Philippines don't have a designated national dish, Lechon is as close as adobo to becoming one. The skin is very delicious when perfectly roasted since it may be both crispy and somewhat chewy at the same time. The burned ends are the best part of the roast. They spend a few hours on a bamboo spit being gently (and traditionally by hand) flipped over charcoal. The pig is roasted on all sides for several hours until done. The process of cooking and basting usually results in making the pork skin crisp and is a distinctive feature of the dish.
