As an avid One Direction fan fic reader, 2023 has been a truly amazing year for fics! I read so many incredible fics this year, so please check out all my recs for the year here! Below you will find fics that made me cry or cry with laughter. Others brought me comfort during hard times or filled my heart with joy or had me screaming into my pillow in surprise. I share this list with you all not to say that these fics are better than others from this year, but to say thank you to these writers who have left a mark on me with their fics.

It becomes obvious early on that Harry is a bit lost and Gemma is worried about him. To help both of them, Louis is more than happy to help Harry find himself again.

Teach me how to love by @perfectdagger

(E, 70k, one night stand) The one in which Harry is bad at sex and Louis spreads it all over town and to make up for it, decides to help him with no agenda of getting anything from it, but in the end, he ends up getting more than he bargained for.

One of my favorite things about doing Happy Hour is facilitating guests and encouraging them to be creative with their recs. Whether you want to format with bullet points or use emojis or write a paragraph-form rec, I love seeing guests give their favorite ficswith their style. When I asked our wonderful @phdmama to join and be a Happy Hour guest, she had the wonderful idea to change it up a bit and give her re-read recs, and I think you'll be so thrilled with what she came up with. Enjoy!

When The Drarry Librarian invited me to participate in Happy Hour, I was SO excited and honored, because, well - they’re doing such wonderful lovely things in fandom, and who doesn’t adore hyping up a fic they love? But as I thought about it, I realized that so many of the fics I wanted to rec were older and well-known, but they’re the fics that came to my mind because I’ve read them so many times.

Which got me to thinking about the role of rereading in fandom, and how it works for me. Now, I know there are lots of people who never reread, and there are lots of people who maybe reread occasionally. (This is actually one of the things I adore about fandom, all the beautiful differences we bring to the table!) That’s just not how my mind works. I’ve always been a VERY COMMITTED (aka deeply obsessive) reader and as I think back over my reading life, I’ve also always been a REreader.

Reading, quite literally, has saved my life and transformed it. So I thought I’d highlight of few of those fics that have impacted me so profoundly. These fics are comfort food for my brain. These are fics I come back to, over and over and over again. They live in my soul. (For the purposes of this piece, I’ll stick to Drarry fics, but there are these special fics in every fandom I read in, and we all know, I read very widely in lots of fandoms - it’s truly an embarrassment of riches!)

I would recommend pretty much anything by these authors (read the tags etc etc) &

Limiting myself to just a few was SO SO difficult and I know I’m leaving out so many of my favorite authors and fics but I wanted to ACTUALLy write this!

Foundations by saras_girl (236,075 words, rated E)

When one door closes, another one opens – with a bit of a push. Life, love and complications. [sequel to Reparations]

Now, I could probably put most of saras-girl’s fics on this list and call it a day, but this fic (the whole ‘verse honestly) hits me on so many levels. From a narrative standpoint, I absolutely adore the idea of Healer Harry, and this whole world is just so rich and fully realized. This fic hits the therapist/healer in me and it speaks to the way so many healers are, just as Draco is, so wounded and in our own journey. But even more so, this fic gave me a tool for when I was navigating my father’s dying, the tool of, “in this space, we can say whatever we want, whatever we’re thinking and feeling, without any apologizing, equivocating or shaming ourselves.” (The “we” in this case was my sister and me.) It felt like because I had read this, it gave me permission to live it, and I cannot begin to explain how necessary it was for me during that incredibly painful time. This fic hits grief and loss and how hard life can be sometimes but also it’s so beautifully healing.

One moment that gets me:

“Don’t say anything,” Harry pleads, and it’s almost a whisper. He doesn’t want to hear any

reassuring words, were Draco inclined to begin offering them.

“What makes you think there’s anything I could say?” Draco murmurs against his ear and holds him tighter.

The Light More Beautiful by @firethesound (81,225 words, rated E)

Thirteen years after Draco accepts Potter's help escaping the horror of his sixth year, he returns to England where he makes the unfortunate discovery that Potter is still as obnoxious as ever. And worse, more than a decade overseas hasn't been enough to dim Draco's obsession with him.

I think this is one of the first Drarry fics I ever really just fell head over heels in love with. This was in my early days of navigating AO3 and I really didn’t understand it all. I read the fic, and lost track of it, and was thinking about it several months later. I ended up going through my entire history (IT TOOK A LONG TIME PALS) to find it because I just remembered loving it so much. Every time I reread it, I just fall more and more in love with it. I love that these are imperfect people, who’ve learned and grown and changed. I love the narrative voice in this - I think this fic really shaped both what I love to read (a sort of spare, dry, very funny until you get PUNCHED IN THE FEELINGS kind of voice) but also my own writing. This is the kind of voice I aspire to.

A moment (one of many) that makes me laugh:

“Fuck off,” Draco says again, slapping his hand away. So much for Potter keeping his hands to himself.

“Come on!” Potter slides off the table, grabs him and pulls him into an awkward, shuffling sort of dance that consists mostly of hip-grinding and arse-groping and, to Draco’s horror, he starts belting out lyrics. Draco thinks he’s getting them horribly wrong until it clicks that Potter’s just making them up as he goes along. About the two of them. And well now, that’s just inappropriate.

“Stop it!” Draco says, trying to push Potter off him. It’s a struggle to keep from laughing, but he knows if he does it’ll only egg Potter on. “You’re not even singing the right words.” He doesn’t succeed in dislodging him. Merlin, Potter’s like an octopus. An octopus with a terrible singing voice and no sense of rhythm and a somewhat frightening sense of humour.

Draco finally makes him shut up by sticking his tongue in Potter’s mouth, and mercifully Potter’s more interested in snogging than in continuing his ridiculous made-up lyrics.

Balance, Imperfect by @bixgirl1 (91,000 words, rated E)

When Harry sustains an injury in the line of work, he no longer knows how to navigate the life he loved, and finds help and solace from the most unexpected source.

I was sort of wary going into this one. I have very complicated feelings about relationships between healers and their patients, and normally avoid that dynamic but this was recommended to me (I can’t even remember by whom) and I am so thankful I did try it, because it’s another one of my all-time favorites. This is another fic that really dives into the absolute complexity of disability, trauma and healing. We have real people who are amazing and flawed and beautiful and so, so real. One of the things I also love about this fic is that Harry isn’t “fixed” by magic - he heals, and he adapts but he’s profoundly changed by his experiences, and as a trauma survivor, this just resonated so so deeply for me.

A beautiful, poignant moment:

When Malfoy finally leaves him alone at the end of the night, Harry exhales for the first time in what feels like hours. His body feels tight and confusing; he wants to rage and throw things at the other man, wants to refuse his aid.

But there was a moment when Malfoy seemed so assured, so fucking confident that he could help, that Harry had been dazed with the force of his own longing, but couldn’t bring himself to ask if that help would be able to make him whole again.

He didn’t think he could stand hearing the word no.

Aurora by @wolfpants (5,230 words, rated M)

Eighth Year at a half-built Hogwarts, and Harry is not following Draco Malfoy anymore. At least, that's what he's telling himself.

This fic just breaks my heart in the most beautiful way (which wolfie knows cuz I just screech about it periodically). I love so many of the different iterations of post-war Harry but this is absolutely one of my favorites. He’s lost and struggling to find a way, and I love that journey for him. Wolfie’s such a wonderful writer, and this whole fic is just so delicate and beautiful.

A moment that makes me cry EVERY SINGLE TIME (this writing OMG):

And that was how the two of them found themselves in an intense and hushed conversation out on the fields, the same fields Harry watched Charlie and Nicu kiss, where Ginny demanded too much of him and Harry cracked under her questions, questions, questions.

They came back to the house together, sticky-cheeked and red-eyed, and a week later, it all became clearer to Harry when Ron asked him about it on one of their forest walks. It became clearer when Harry had planted a misdirected kiss of his own to his friend’s lips, and Ron had let him, and had, for a while, allowed it to continue, until he slid his fingers gently over the nape of Harry’s neck and pressed their foreheads together and let Harry cry instead, and he told him, "it’s alright, it’s alright mate, no one’s going to hate you for this, it’s alright, we all love you, you just have to talk to us, you just have to know that we’re here for you, yeah? No matter who you are, alright? It’s alright. We just want you to be happy. It’s all we want."

gah hi friend!! i'm sorry this took me forever!! my brain went in like 50 different directions for this one.

60 is Poorly Timed Confession and 86 is I Didn't Mean to Turn You On and tbh these are perfect.

okay so the main place my brain went to for drarry was a massage?? draco who is very mutually tactile and affectionate with his friends and is constantly giving new friend harry little snuggles and back rubs and sometimes just casually massages his head and neck while he's talking to other people and harry does not know how to cope because he has absolutely never had a friend like that, or tbh even a lover who does that sort of thing for no reason--like, sometimes harry looks around to make sure there's no stray reporter or camera around because he can't figure out why else draco would bother. i'm sure you know where this goes; draco giving harry one of his mindless massages when they're at someone's house party, harry a little tipsy and warm and content who just sinks into it. all of this adds up to him getting way too turned on for being public and also blurting out exactly how into draco he is. draco, who did not know the effect all of that touching was having on harry until now and is staring at him like a stunned bunny in front of their friends.

This ran away with me so this is part one of "Five Times Draco and Harry Kissed for Luck and One Time It Was Real". Huge thanks to @phoebe-delia for helping me brainstorm and just being all-round amazing.

“Okay, lads. Losing is NOT an option!” Weasley paced up and down the locker rooms, hands clasped behind his back. “These seventh years have become a little too cocky, we need to show them that we’re still top-dog.”

Draco swallowed his laughter, knowing Weasley was deadly serious, but others weren’t so successful. Potter snickered behind his hand, rolling his eyes when Weasley turned to glare at him. “Come on, Ron. It’s just pick-up quidditch.”

“Just pick-up quidditch? Weasley spluttered. Draco shuddered as spit flew across the room. “This is our reputation on the line!”

Weasley paced up and back once more, before planting himself firmly in front of the team. “We need to win, and for that we need not only our skills, but all the luck we can get.”

“Please tell me you haven’t found Felix Felicis somewhere,” Potter said, his eyes wide.

“No, although that’s a good idea…” Weasley shook himself. “No, we need to find our luck elsewhere. Which is why you are all going to go out there and kiss your girlfriends — or boyfriends, yes Dean — to give you luck.”

“You don’t really believe that will work do you?” Dean looked skeptical, although Draco knew that he never passed up an opportunity to kiss Seamus, no matter how public that opportunity was.

“We can’t gamble on it! Any little chance adds up!” Weasley was looking positively manic by now, and Draco felt like shaking the git. Luckily Potter spoke up before he could leave his seat.

“Ron, that’s all well and good for those of you who have partners, but what about those of us who don’t.”

Weasley glared at Potter. “I’m not having our chances jeopardised by your lack of game, Potter!” He scanned the room, eyes falling — unfortunately — on Draco. “Are you currently dating anyone, Malfoy?”

Draco spluttered. “What on earth does that have to do with Potter’s lacklustre love life?”

“I’m going to take that as a no,” Weasley smirked. “There you go, Harry, you can kiss Malfoy. That way neither of you can break our luck.”

“Ron,” Harry sighed, “is this really necessary?”

“Of course it is! Now hurry up, kiss him so the rest of us can go and find our partners before the game starts.”

Potter turned to Draco, an apologetic smile on his face. “If we don’t do it he’ll probably push our faces together.”

Draco sighed. “Okay, Potter. Do your worst then.”

It was the most chaste kiss Draco had ever experienced — lips closed, pressed together for barely a second — but Potter’s lips were warm, as was the hand he placed on Draco’s hip for the briefest of moments.

“Alright team!” Weasley’s voice broke the spell Potter’s lips had created. “Let’s go win this game!”

7: What jerseys do you own

I own one singular adidas Flyers jersey that I thrifted from a guy in NSW for SO cheap, relatively. I love it. It's blank at the back and it's the orange before they went back to burnt orange. Does that have a name? idk.

Not a jersey but I also own a Canucks (Sedin #33) Old Time Hockey hoodie and it's my favourite thing in the world. It is SO cozy I wear it all the time. Found it randomly in the city and when I asked if they had flyers hoodie the guy was like a box of those fell out of a truck so those are the only ones we've got. The best of my merch purchases have been from obscure places.

Phdmama Fanfic Universe

The incredible @phd-mama recently hit a word count milestone, and I think that needs to be celebrated. So I made this. Because PM has lovingly created a universe for the characters in the fandoms she writes for, and I have coined it the Phdmama Fanfic Universe.

From Niall making moonshine, to Drarry's signature Lubrico scent, to Seamus the mystery novelist, PM has created signature elements that tie her stories together, no matter how different each universe might be. She can put her characters in infinite situations, and yet each story is uniquely hers, not only because of the easter eggs she leaves behind, but because of the love that fills every story she tells.

PM, I love you. We love you. You deserve to be celebrated.

hmmm. Close Behind probably but please know that whenever i writeangst like that i am also going 'hehehehehe' like a witch at my screen when i hit post.

yes! all of it! tbh i had trouble letting ray read my nonfanfiction; he is the least online person in the world and that is a huge part of why i love him. and my siblings and i are not the kind of siblings who share hobbies with each other lol.

okay, since this conference means i'm probably not going to update the star splitter for a bit (which is good if people want to catch up!!), i'll stick a snippet from chapter 6 below the cut here. chapter 6 is, of course, my favorite chapter so far; it also has a content warning for the aftermath of parental death (narcissa) and discussion of amputation, which doesn't actually happen but it's still rather casually suggested. 😬

Draco had been suspended from time travel for six months after his mother died, a standard sentence for agents who experienced a significant loss of someone close: time sand confiscated, zero assignments, barred from even visiting Headquarters. Draco has no idea where that six-month figure had come from, as if that was enough time to truly grow around the grief, to get so used to it one could ignore the impulse to fix it when one had the means. Abrams and Chelsea seemed to understand Draco’s feelings on the matter, because an additional, non-standard sentence was imposed on him: a time cuff was placed around his wrist, unremovable except by Abrams, keeping Draco utterly anchored in the present. It looked like a watchband without a face, gold and cool and tight around his left wrist. When the Time Turner didn’t work, Father started staring at the time cuff. In between one round of gin and the next, he and Draco came to the apparently mutual decision to try to get the cuff off. They had tried melting it, cutting it, freezing it and bashing it with explosive hexes, prying it off with fireplace tongs. Nothing worked; Draco’s arm was a bloodied mess of gashes and burns and wounds, the pain somewhere far away from him, buried under drink and howling misery. It had been Draco who suggested they simply cut off his hand at the wrist, finally shocking Father into some semblance of sense. He refused; Draco said he would get Jack to do it; they argued. Father said he would do it after they had one more drink, then put enough Dreamless Sleep in Draco’s gin to down a hippogriff. Draco slept for 18 hours straight and woke up to his arm healed and Jack checking his vitals, entirely distraught. While he’d been asleep, Father had sobered up, signed over to Draco the entirety of Malfoy Manor and all of his British holdings, and departed for Switzerland.

🍓 What's a fic you've written you feel is underrated?

I've been struggling to think which of my fics is underrated - when I post a fic, it's usually as if it entirely ceases to exist in my brain. That's great on the one hand, because if any of my fics have flopped then I have no clue and I'm just as happy as I would have been otherwise, but it also means that I forget what I've written and my irl bestie (who doesn't read fanfic) knows my fics better than I do 😆 By virtue of lowest hits/kudos ratio, I think my most underrated fic is Pieces Falling Into Place. It was the first fic I wrote for the Drarry fandom, and I didn't do much to promote it or share it or anything, so I think it went somewhat under the radar. It's also pretty unconventional, in that it's from Dean's perspective and is just him jumping to conclusions about the nature of Harry and Draco's relationship, based on what he's hearing when they're faced with the Snatchers in book 7. I think it's pretty funny though, and I had fun coming up with the ways that Dean could misinterpret canon compliant things to come up with Drarry!

🍍 What kinds of AUs do you like? Are there any AUs you hate or just generally have beef with?

The question of my favorite AU is incredibly easy - soulmates, all day every day! Red string of fate, sharing pain, identical scars, hearing the others thoughts, lost things finding the other one, any soulmate trope at all is amazing and I will read it!!! However, there is one exception to that rule: I don't like reincarnation fics, or ones where it's the same characters in a bunch of different time periods finding each other again and again. I have no clue why my brain is so against that trope, but I just do not like it. Tbh I'm really sad that I don't like it, because there are some fics that follow that trope written by authors I love, but I know I wouldn't enjoy them properly if I read them. I'm not sure if it's just my historian-brain being skeptical of someone being able to write multiple time periods accurately (I don't watch most period movies for that reason too, I can't turn off that part of my brain no matter how much I try), or if it's the implication of death that fics like that require (I don't do well with death usually), but I can't get myself to enjoy those fics so I just avoid them.
