A REALLY, REALLY HOT POTO TAKE!
I know this will be kind of shocking for many little brains in the phandom, but I'll say it anyway: It's totally possible to love/defend Erik without trashing/insulting Christine and/or Raoul and their fans!
Yeah I know, who could imagine something like this! I can't believe it too 😲
You wanna know what's even more shocking: it's also totally possible to love/defend Christine and/or Raoul without trashing/insulting Erik and his fans!
IKR, I'm speechless as well... You can actually disagree with other people who think different from you, but still don't take it personally and be respectuful towards them regardless of their opinions and points of view! 😲😱

(Warning: high level of sarcasm in this post! Be careful if you're too sensitive)
Anyway, thanks for your attention 😘

TOP 10 OTHER MEDIA FANDOMS ON AO3 BASED ON NUMBER OF FANWORKS (2009-2022)
To make these bar chart race, all series titles in the Other Media Category on November 29 (or the closest date to it) of every year were copy-pasted from Wayback Machine to Google Sheets, rearranged according to number of fanworks, and then inputted to Flourish to turn into a bar chart race.
Locked fanworks aren't included in the count because Wayback Machine can’t view those, only Ao3 users can.
Fandom tags that are no longer in the Other Media category tag as of posting this are left out of the bar chart race. These tags are usually either miscategorized or already have other tags referring to the same fandom.
For tags that existed on the same years before eventually merging into one tag later on (such as MS Paint Adventures which later on merged with Homestuck, and Internet Personalities which later on merged with Video Blogging RPF), I use the data of whichever tag has the highest number for that year.
Dream SMP & Rock Music RPF were added to the Other Media cetegory in 2022, that's why they just suddenly popped up in the end.
Disney Theatrical Animated Universe wasn't in the Other Media Category in 2021, that's why they just suddenly popped up in the end. However, it was in this category in 2019-2020 under a different name: Disney - All Media Types.
Please refer to this post for more bar chart races.
Thanks for understanding and hopefully I didn’t mess up anywhere! 🙏

jfc Danny Phantom (as a show) is so chauvinistic
And like, watching Beauty Marked in particular makes it extra obvious, especially because with the whole pageant thing and the medieval theme makes it seem like it's half-heartedly trying to be a girl power episode, except it really doesn't work--you have a bunch of girls trying to bribe the judge to get to be the beauty pageant winner, and Danny and Tucker reveling in 'getting all the girls' while Danny's chosen as the judge, and Sam judging the girls involved and boys watching instead of the actual practices and ideals that the pageant is apparently based on, and the whole implication that misogyny only exists in the 'dark ages' which both disrespects actual medieval Europe AND sidesteps the question of sexism in the modern day, the treatment of Dora's relationship with her brother (imo very poorly handled), probably a whole bunch of other things in this episode and in the general show that I'm not mentioning/remembering
but like, it's Danny Phantom, i shouldn't expect that much of it

While I accept that a fan is a fan, there is an unfortunate number of Danny Phantom fans who haven't seen the source material and are lost, confused, or assume a lot of things that aren't true.
I don't think you need to watch the show, but there's clearly an issue with so many people getting into something they know nothing about. We headcanon freely in this fandom, and I personally consider all headcanons valid, but there's a lot of things that are taken as gospel that aren't in the show (or any other canon material) and some actually goes against canon. And I've seen that a ton of newer fans are extremely confused as to what is and isn't canon and there's a lot of fanon lore that's built up in the past nearly two decades since the shows original airing.
Canon isn't king, but it is still important. Canon is a Lego box set, but fan creators still decide what to build with it. And if you don't know what pieces you have, you'll have a hard time figuring out what can build.
So, if you are one of those people that is confused as to what is and isn't canon, just go watch the show. It's not hard to find the episodes online (just remember to use adblocker and virus protection if you're not using an official source). You could also request your local library get a DVD set *wink wink nudge nudge, I did this one as a teen*.
Just, please just watch the show. (and support your local library)

I don't understand know why some dnp fans are obsessed with making other fans feel bad about themselves especially when they're making things up about dnp to make others feel bad (ie. fans somehow coming up with the narrative that the phandom was the reason dnp stayed closeted as opposed to idk generally how hateful and homophobic society is). Most fans never even did anything "bad," all we did was make jokes and fanart and fanfics which they've always been supportive of and have joked around about. Dnp have pretty much always been very close with this community and thankful for our support. I just don't get why people act like they hate fans or are making fun of them just because they make some jokes

danny phantom(the show) has a LOT of things that phandom could discuss critically (ie the suuuper blatant racism that happens but also actually good and interesting things) pero yall refuse to watch the show. like idk how many times imma beg yall to watch the source material of a fandom youre in but please do
something something engaging with media that doesnt interest you is actually good for your brain and you should do it more often so why not start in ya own damn fandom
why we have wes? bc yall dont bother to watch and realize that all the attributes u give him are literally ripped off valerie and paulina and then yall go onto rants like “but we can have both” we really cant!!!! its straight up racist what yall did to her!!! but ohhh its really not that serious cuz why would yall know if you dont watch the show!!!!!! its racist!!
the only perception yall have about the black and brown characters of danny phantom are ones pushed on yall by a majority white fandom!!!! its fucking sickenin!!!! AND ITS WHY YALL LET SO MANY DAMN ARTISTS GET AWAY WITH SKINNYFYING AND WHITEWASHING VALERIE watch the show and make your own opinions about these characters because they’re genuinely so good if you actually gave them a damn chance!!! and point out problematic shit by your fave artists just fucking do it goddamn!!!!

I see weird takes in fandoms all the time and never really feel the need to comment but there is one that crops up every now and again that rubs me the wrong way. The idea that Christine somehow deserves Erik's reaction when she takes off his mask or even that she's shallow, cruel, or somehow the abusive one in their dynamic. It's not a prevalent take, at least not like it was back in 2012 when I first joined the phandom, I don't think, but it lends itself to the completely backwards idea that Christine is somehow wrong for not immediately accepting Erik.
People who think that Christine is the problem here really don't grasp how utterly destroyed her reality was the moment the mask came off. A reality that Erik had built for her with his whole "Angel of Music" ruse. I kind of wish these people would put themselves in her shoes for a moment. Imagine someone grieving the loss of a beloved parent and suddenly a "guardian angel" shows up allegedly sent by that parent to watch over them. Wouldn't anyone be thrilled that their parent some how exists and is able to send an envoy to communicate with them? Especially if they were young, I can easily see how someone consumed by grief would latch on to that. It wouldn't take much for this new entity to become a source of comfort and security, something they grow to love and trust as a connection to the only family they had.
Now imagine one day they find out that it was all a lie. Their parent is just gone, has been the whole time, they never sent any angel, there's no hope or evidence that some part of them ever had the ability to reach out. All of that comfort and safety is just gone. It was never there. For Christine there's a stranger here named Erik who may very well be dangerous and who definitely doesn't have entirely parental feelings towards her. I can't view this as anything but terrifying and it's difficult for me to envision a version of Christine that wouldn't feel like her father had just died all over again.
I also believe that Erik knows this and on some level regrets it throughout the book, culminating in him letting Christine go in the end. I can even buy that his intentions to be Christine's "Angel" weren't initially malicious but by the time he realized it could only end badly he was already in too deep. Erik made some really poor choices and the sad reality is that he probably didn't think he had any choices to begin with. This doesn't mean he gets a pass but it does highlight how tragic the story is and I think he is deserving of some sympathy for his circumstances. I just don't think that it's Christine's obligation to give it to him and her showing him grace and offering a gesture of love at the end is incredibly generous of her. I think when that subset of the fandom that is critical of Christine insist that she should have just accepted Erik they are really downplaying how meaningful her actions are. Erik cause a lot of harm, more harm to her than to anyone else (with the exception of the people he outright killed) and her forgiveness and compassion meant as much to him as it did because he's aware that he hadn't earned that from her. That is why it is meaningful that she kissed him, cried with him and he let her go. Because it broke the cycle. To show him kindness at a time when he least deserved it is real mercy and he understood that. Anyway, I think that's enough serious fandom talk from this fish, back to my drabbles and doodles.

I'm curious, do ppl hate Love Never Dies because they think Eristine is problematic and it's made canon in it, or is it due to something else? I havent watched it yet or anything but i like the vibes, lol
Heh... Love Never Dies has always been controversial at the very least? It came out at a time where Erik/Christine was still the most popular ship in the phandom - it still is, by the way. That didn't change despite a clear shift in fandom and ""problematic content"" around 2013, so a good 3 years after the musical came out. If anything, Raoul/Christine shippers have been a minority for most of the phandom's history, and both sides of the debate at some point more or less decided to agree to disagree (I mean, the homophobic slurs Raoul would get at times were starting to REALLY be in poor taste), except on the point that without the love triangle, there wouldn't be much of a story, and there are various ways of interpreting said love triangle. So, quite frankly, I don't understand why some people on either side are trying to restart discourse in the POTO fandom but I digress. And look, if you see people in the tags saying that Erik/Christine is problematic, they're probably new, and not really representative of the phandom at large. Anything having to do with Sierra Boggess is more controversial.
I really don't think the controversy stems from it making Erik and Christine bang and have a love child - I know there are some people who are against the idea of any kind of sequel, in fanfic form or otherwise, for a variety of reasons, but most of them were being responsible adults about it and didn't actively seek fanfic. As I mentioned before, a lot of folks were Erik/Christine shippers and thought that Christine was more into the Phantom than into Raoul, that's nothing new. But a lot of them also had issues with how LND dealt with it, for several reasons. It didn't come from an "anti" sentiment, it was very much them having issues with the material that was presented to them.
Raphael/phantoonsoftheopera (who is a long time fan of POTO) goes into more detail here and I think he sums up a lot of phans' thoughts back in 2010 when LND came out (whether they shipped the Phantom and Christine or not), and I think @musicalhell is another one who was also around at the time (feel free to pop in, and hope I'm not bothering you with the tag).
As for the rest, I wish I could defend ALW's choices here in the same way I'd defend Lana Wachowski for Matrix Resurrections - i.e. you're allowed to not like it but this is this creator's baby and they're allowed to do whatever they want with it, so let's all respect art for the sake of art here. But LND is very much a vanity project, as ALW has proven multiple times, that is mean-spirited to its core in various ways. For my fellow SW fans, it's the TROS to POTO'S TLJ. The cast and crew were treated in a really shitty way back in the original London production days, same with critics of the show, and there was even a case where a journalist and long time phan who provided a critical review of LND was demeaned in an article as some sort of sad housewife who was obsessed with POTO. Mind you, ALW has tried to make LND work FOR YEARS, with various productions and tours opening here and there, but it always underperforms. And mind you, the Eristine crowd is still hanging around, and POTO is doing extremely well whereever it goes to this day. If the Eristine content was good, the crowds would follow, "problématique" posts and tweets or not. They aren't there.

The fact that looking into technical failures to understand the businesses we are patronizing (and let's be clear every bit of money sent DnP's way means you Are Doing Business With Them in the literal sense) is far from negativity aside... I don't think we should have a knee jerk reaction against anything negative being said as a rule, because that's how you end up platforming and pedestialising horrible things just because your favourite celebrity does them. Like, we need to bring back an understanding of when negativity is "uncalled for" (to do with things that are none of our business as consumers, audiences, and patrons, or otherwise to do with personal/harmless stuff) and when it isn't uncalled for, otherwise we create an expectation of just never being allowed to criticise anything, from the quality of the works presented to us, to quality of service with merch, to collabs with harmful partners, and eventually to misuse of a massive platform for nefarious ends.
Thankfully dnp have had way more integrity than most exploitative content creators out there. But that's certainly in part due to mutual respect between audience and creators and if we start hand wringing about small criticisms we will not be able to maintain that mutual respect and make ourselves easy to exploit.
Not to go on a big rant or anything, I just feel it should be stated that criticisms aren't always bad faith, and it's good that we have people in this fandom (like yourself ❤️) willing to hold some stuff to account where it's important+ where it concerns us directly
~ 🪴
"let's be clear every bit of money sent DnP's way means you Are Doing Business With Them in the literal sense" EXACTLY. and their business decisions affect us, unfortunately.
thank you so much for saying all of this, Hazel. phandom has a weird relationship with criticism. i experienced it more than once, unfortunately (did it teach me anything? no, i'm still here. rip to my mental health). for some reason a lot of people think that if you criticise what dnp do, you automatically criticise and dislike them as people. which couldn't be further from the truth. i try to criticise their work and actions related to their work, not them personally. the same goes for Matryn and his work. and if in the end something gets fixed or just a little bit better, i try to comment on that as well. i like seeing progress. like today with wad merch. i will update my post about irl merch, because i mentioned 9 months to gather the merch from all over the world. but Dan found other way, and that's great! only he confused us with "many weeks" and "i will try" before that.
i realise that maybe a breakdown post (or two) would be better than making 10 about basically the same thing. it's emotions. merch stuff is a rollercoaster. i haven't felt so many completely opposite emotions in a long time. and some of them are ending up on my blog in a form of criticism and yelling.

So I made a wip regarding this post.
I don't know if its good or not considering this is basically the first ever idea I've actually written for this phandom so, constructive criticism would be appreciated, both for this and dialogue cause idk how to write conversations lol.
---------
It wasn’t often that Danny got to rest like this, surrounded by ice and cold in one of the deepest, secluded parts of the Far Frozen. His tail flicked lazily behind him as he rested.
Becoming the Ghost King – more like half king – was not what it was worth. Not that he even wanted to become the Ghost King, it sorta just. Happened. As does most things in his life. If it weren’t for that fruitloop he wouldn’t even be in this mess in the first place.
Becoming the Ghost King and then four weeks later waking up as a dragon was not in his to-do list thank you very much. At least the whole of Amity park was affected and not just him, minimises the chances of it being a personal strike against him.
But whoever made that wish should stub their pinkie toe.
(Weasley Weston sneezed, then screamed out loud as he stubbed his toe.)
Danny stretched, letting out a sigh of contentment (more so just blowing cold air out his nose) as he could hear the bones popping. He then laid back down, ready to recharge, relax and ignore whatever thing that’s happening in the outside world that doesn’t need his immediate attention.
Something is going to ruin this, isn’t it-
“Daniel!” The familiar voice of the other Ghost King’s – the other half – scream reverberates inside the room that Danny decided to hold up in, the area noticeably getting hotter as well.
-aaand there it is.
Danny keeps his head down, not opening his eyes as his tail lashes in the general direction of the phoenix-
“What do you want, Fruit Loop?” Danny’s voice was tired and exasperated, with a bit of aggression mixed in as well.
-based on how he couldn’t feel a weight at the end of his tail, nor the squawk Vlad would let out if he managed to land a hit, he could say he missed. A pity.
Vlad scoffed, staring down the dragon at the end of his beak as he flew back a bit to avoid his tail, the temperature rising ever so slightly in the face of his irritation.
Luckily, this is the resting grounds of a Ghost King, so it wouldn’t be melting anytime soon. Unless he actually tries, of course. Vlad shuffled in place for a moment, turning the words over in his beak before taking a deep breath.
“Just spit it out already fruit-”
“The Sarcophagus of Forever Sleep is missing.” Predictably Danny did not take that news well, he quickly got up to his full height, his eyes wide open as cold mist leaves his mouth and his tail swishes in agitation.
“WHAT!?” Vlad huffed, “Calm down little badger. Panicking will get us nowhere.” Vlad then turned around, gesturing with his wing for Danny to follow before he quickly left the area, taking off in flight soon after.
------------
Hahah here it is, idk how good it actually is, though.

Dan Howell referencing the Kit Connor situation in his new video on parasocial relationships seems appropriate considering how much it reminded me of the toxic side of the phandom.
I remember when Dan and Phil were criticized for “queer-baiting” I’m happy the phandom isn’t like that anymore but the heartstopper fandom (at least on twitter) still has a ways to go

for the ask game: 💥🤔📚
if we can only do one, your pick :)
(Fanfic writer ask game)
💥 What is one canon thing that you wish you could change?
I've talked about some other changes in a previous ask, but I think Danny Phantom could have been improved by either re-writing the episode Memory Blank or at the very least, cutting a couple of the jokes. The base-premise is potentially interesting but it was definitely one of the ones where the show did characters dirty for the sake of jokes.
If I had to leave it mostly as-is, I would at least want to ditch the two random insert jokes where Danny "remembers" using his powers to peep in the girl's locker room. Not only is the base joke a gross, sexist "boys will be boys" gag, it also just feels really jarring and almost out of character for Danny in particular. That's not to say that Danny isn't canonically chauvinistic in other ways at times, but this one doesn't jive with how he reacts to similar situations (and behaviors from Tucker) in other, more character-centric episodes. The abrupt musical punctuation feels more like a sudden insert of Fairly Odd Parents humour and I would say it's probably only there because this kind of "adorkable misogynist" punchline is a common staple in both Butch Hartman and Steve Marmel's comedy styles.
Ideally though, since the main purpose of the episode is to give Danny his marketable DP insignia, I would rather do a full re-write around all three trio members actively trying to design a logo for Phantom. Rather than doing Danny and Tucker dirty by making them into boring butt-monkeys who live empty lives without Sam (and doing Sam dirty by making her seem like a weird stalker who changes Danny's suit without his knowledge or consent) we could have had an episode that let the icon have actual symbolic meaning for the whole of "Team Phantom". It's sad that one if the most iconic symbols of the show ends up being tacked onto a character assassinating goof-story when there were so many ways it could have been great.
🤔 Would you ever want to write something canon if you got the opportunity?
Going to go with a soft no on this one.
For one thing, I believe the best stories happen when someone has a specific story to tell, and at the moment my Deathly Weapons fanfic is the main story I feel the need to make exist. As a mystery nerd, I guess I could maybe do a decent detective story involving Batman or Gotham, but on the other hand I don't think it would be the kind of story Modern DC wants to sell.
From a practical point of view, I also think the things and stories I find the most fascinating within the Danny Phantom fandom would probably be too tonally serious to "fit with the brand" of official canon material. (Although it has been awesome to see some of the Phandom olds getting ascended to the level of official canon creators with the AGiT comics!)
As for Young Justice Animated I think I'm one of several fans who wouldn't mind being tagged-in (or at least a fly on the wall) if DC/Warner Bros ever decided to give it the Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood treatment, kick Greg Weisman's Whedon-worshipping incel ass out the door and let some of the prominent staff who were dropped after Season 1 have a do-over to continue the story they were actually setting up. I think there was a lot of potential in that initial cast, and there were some really cool character-centric standalone episodes that could have come from things like digging into Artemis and Jade having a diegetic connection to Alice In Wonderland while living in the same city as Jervis "Mad Hatter" Tech. But as it stands, I found Weisman's multi-season vandalisation of his colleagues' work to be so egregious that I ended up blocking both the main series tag and his name for the sake of my blood pressure. Look, even when he's not writing like the kind of man who probably fantasises about impregnating his colleague's daughter, the Nostalgia-Critic-level incompetence at basic narrative coherence is just exhausting.
📚 Is there a fanfic or fanfic writer you recommend?
Many!
For today's tasting, I would like to recommend Developmental Milestones and the broader Cor Et Cerebrum series by @audreycritter. Actually, let's just make that a general rec' for all Audreycritter's DC stuff.
I really like their interpretations of the Batfam and Superfam. They do such a good job of capturing the humanity of these characters in their non-cape moments, and I love their approach to dialogue. I think it speaks volumes to the strength of their character-writing that, despite not being a reader who generally goes in for Original Characters, I have become deeply obsessed with their on-call OC Batdoctor Kiran "Dev" Devabhaktuni. He is indeed the light of my life. Developmental Milestones is Dev's focus story but plenty of others put the focus on the canon DC roster if you prefer.
Go enjoy seeing Bruce get yelled at by a deeply affronted, potty-mouthed British Doctor with a heart of gold, though he'll stringently deny it.
Thanks for playing!

this is not meant to be critical BTW I just wanted to get something off my chest...
i’ve been trying to think of how to word this cuz like...
I REALLY enjoyed A Glitch in Time! My love for Danny Phantom has not wavered at all and I was given a huge boost of serotonin seeing my bbys again in a new story and I like a lot of what the story did for those charactors...!
That said...
I don’t quite feel the same level of “OMFG MY SOUL IS CLEANSED” that I see a lot of fans having and I couldn't quite pinpoint WHY because the comic IS really good and I DID really enjoy it...
But...like...okay, so:
The stuff that I’ve always found most fascinating about Danny’s issues is 1) His relationship to his parents. 2) His relationship to Valerie. and 3) How his anger and spite get the better of him and how that informs a lot of who Dark Danny became (yes I still call him Dark Danny don’t @ me lol)
I feel like the comic did touch on that 3rd thing but maybe not quite as much as I had hoped??? And to my memory he doesn’t even really interact that much with his parents and I don’t even think he talked to Valerie AT ALL in the comic...(I really need to go back and reread it lol)
I think that’s all being saved for a (potential) sequel comic which is perfectly fine, but I guess I was really hoping that the comic would explore that stuff and it just didn’t so I was kind of disappointed.
But that doesn’t make the comic bad! Far from it, I thought it handled everything really well! I loved the humor and characterization and it made me very happy!!!
But when Danny’s character arc happened...I liked it, I loved his little Steven Universe getting his powers back in the movie moment it was great and he was adorable as ever and I liked the idea of him helping ghosts rather than hunting them...but it wasn’t as big a deal to me as, y’know, Vlad and Dark Danny’s arcs! Which is fine, those arcs where great and I loved how they were handled...I guess I just wanted more for Danny? Like, specifically relating to his relationship with his family and Valerie more so than how he deals with the ghosts...but they’re clearly setting up for another comic so maybe THEN we’ll get to the stuff I was really looking forward to!?!
I really don’t wanna be a downer, but this was nagging at me ever since I finished the comic and I just needed to get it off my chest...
I think I also am still reeling from some other fandoms I’ve been in where if you don’t like or agree with canon then you’ll be skewered and deemed “not a real fan” or “just not getting it” and I’ve gotten used to the Phandom’s “fuck it, we ball” attitude towards canon and now that there’s new official content I’m scared of a reawakening of the Anti vs True Fans bullshit from the days when Danny Phantom was still airing! (fandom trauma’s a real thing my dudes...)
So...yeah. To conclude, the comic is very well done and there’s a lot of great stuff in it and I can’t think of anything I truly disliked, just some nitpicks that kept me from being as emphatic as the rest of the fandom and I just wanted to express my disappointment. But I’m still so happy that we even got it and that it even worked to resolve/fix things that the show left hanging!!! I still love Danny Phantom so much and if they ever do make another comic I’m excited to see what they do with it!

I can’t with Jessica Mason I just can’t
Bestselling? I mean, compared to the plagiarized supernatural book filled with misinfo and the marvel book literally no one has read I guess your standards are probably low but do you really think lying to people on tiktok is suddenly gonna boost sales?
We get it- you took those one star reviews personally and you apparently CAN NOT handle the fact that apparently some people didn’t enjoy your book but crying on tiktok, leaving yourself fake reviews including reviews that are now pretending someone is reaching out to random people and asking them to leave negative reviews, and now padding how you describe your book is insane. I’ve never seen a phandom author handle things so badly and some of these other phan works on goodreads have WAY lower ratings than her book.
Phantom has 4,000 one star ratings on goodreads. It happens. Your book will never be for everyone. There are also more five star reviews on her book than one star but she’s publicly spiraling over a handful of bad reviews. If I didn’t already have issue with her for the awful things she’s done, this behavior alone would turn me off from ever picking up one of her books. Readers need to feel free to talk about books if they didn’t like them and the way she’s trying to invalidate one star reviews is only to the detriment of her book. The review that I shared had some very valid criticisms of her book and she shouldn’t be trying to get their review deleted or convince people that it’s some scheme to “troll” her.
It’d be one thing is she were young and new to the publishing world but she’s in her 40s, she worked as a journalist(yeah she got fired for the racism/homophobia/ and other shit but still) and she’s published like 4 books. No matter who or what fandom you’re writing for, there’s always gonna be critics who didn’t like it.
