Back in 2018 I started doing fantasy character commissions, and posted this character as one of my first example pieces. I decided to redraw her to see if I'd progressed and learned anything since. And like... I think so? I've included the original to compare. What do you guys think?
Commissions are still open for anyone wanting to see their character (or characters, or whole party) in this style!

Hot take, 2nd pov is a great tool not just something to be diminished into, "ain't that how those cringey 12 year old girls write about their dreams of being sold to one direction or the bts mafia vampires??" (no hate)
I have written some things before in 2nd pov that I think are great and although i use the word "you", my second povs are often a supposed person, rather than the readers themselves.
(Mini rant: i love the idea of writing about a "supposed person". this is even how I refer to the narrators in my poems. Sometimes, they are not me but instead a person who holds the sentiments expressed because some aspects of the poetry are blanket statements that are too generalised or just something too dramatised for it to truly be me/the poems tell a story and none of the feelings expressed are mine but I can understand them. If that makes sense lol)
Let me explain my thought process.
3rd person omniscient is the farthest a reader can be from the characters. An all knowing perspective where you are less close to a specific character as you're able to experience everyone's thoughts.
3rd person close is sticking close to one character but you remain in 3rd person, using he, she, they, the character's name, etc. written like first person, as you are in their head, but the fact of it using 3rd person pronouns creates distance
1st person is being very close to the character. I know some people actually don't like it for this reason. The usage of I is immersive to the point where it feels like we're intruding on this person's mind. Like reading a diary. That's why some books that are first person are actually written like diaries.
Now, if we continue on to 2nd person, this is the furthest extreme of closeness one can get to the character. This can understandably be uncomfortable for some.
I have used 2nd person to act as a voice in the character's head. 2nd person can be discomforting, creepy, and I think that's great. The reader is so deep in the character's mind, it is as if they are the character but I like to use it with the idea that the character is their own being.
I'll be reblogging this with snippets of each of my examples.
A cherished example of me using 2nd pov is how I use it in A Tale Of Two Tyrants. The opening of ATOTT is my very favourite. In the MC's extreme moments of violence there is a shift in second person as he divorces himself from the accustomed action of violence.
For a creative writing thing a few years back, I wrote Winter Blues, where "you" trudged through the snow while a derisive 2nd pov narrator spoke to you, narrating your actions and chiding you for dillydallying as you pondered what colour to call the sky. Using words like "nonsense" and "pettifogging" to describe the break you take for your admiration of the sky
And I did an exercise where I rewrote a thing that was originally in 3rd into 2nd pov. The narrator was the collective of voices that canonically reside in the MC's head, speaking as an "us"

Bechdel Fail
Happened upon this intellectual landmine about sexist depictions in Andor. This is the sort of analysis that the word "pettifogging" seems like it was invented for.
The Bechdel Test is useful, especially for newer writers, double especially for men, to make sure you're not using your female characters as set dressing. I like Bechdel. I support it. It passes the Ben Franklin test of being succinct, pithy, and cogent. It's super-easy to use. Just like a blood pressure monitor. A blood pressure monitor is a quick, easy way of monitoring cardiovascular health, but if you look only at BP without backing out and getting the big picture it can mislead. Usain Bolt no doubt has world-class cardiovascular health, but if you just look at his BP in the middle of a 200 meter race, you'll get a misleading picture.
Now, I've not delved much into the subject, but I don't imagine Bechdel was ever intended to be used as a be-all-end-all last word on whether a work is sexist. The author of the linked article is correct on facts (well, mostly) but incorrect on the meaning of those facts, like a lawyer making the best of a bad case. To illustrate, I'll apply an old test of mine, the Nancy Test.
Yeah, you've never heard of it. I'm not surprised. The Nancy Test goes back to my earliest days as a writer. Nancy is my mom (an English major back in the day and keen student of Shakespeare). When I told her I was worried about writing women, she gave me this advice: "as long as what your women *do* effects the story in an important way, you're fine." My mom was educated long before "agency" meant anything but "a government department", but I believe that's what she described.
For brevity, I'll only discuss the episodes (most of them) where the article points out that Andor failed, applying my own Nancy Test.
Ep 1 - Kassa PASS
If the young woman leading the Kenari wreck expedition didn't decide Kassa should come along, nothing else in the whole series would have happened as it did. No Rogue One, no Battle of Scarif.
Beyond that, Bix deciding to use the resistance transmitter to contact Luthen (or maybe Kleya) probably saves Cassian's life, or at least prevents him from being arrested by Syril's corpos. Though unstated, it's my assumption that she's breaking protocol doing this.
Ep 2 - That Would Be Me PASS
Once again, Bix plays a key role, though it's something of a double-edged sword. She has to tell Cassian that the buyer is coming for his Starpath, but their intense conversation and Cassian touching her as he thanks her for getting him out of the jam is misinterpreted by Timm.
We also get the woman who runs the brothel doing a positive ID on Cassian as the man she spoke to, giving Syril the confirmation he needs to go to Ferrix.
And finally, we have the Kenari leader going alone to check out the wreckage. If she sends a scout while she stays back with her team, I don't think we get the response from Kassa to go into the wreck seeking revenge, which we know leads to Maarva, Clem, and B2.
Just as an aside, it's lovely how BBY 5 Maarva is introduced as a little old lady who keeps her house cold and worries about Cassian. Just your basic aging mum, right? Bit cantankerous, but within our usual experience. Silly us.
Ep 3 - Reckoning PASS
For some reason the author decides to rant about Deedra Meero here, and as she isn't even in the episode draw your own conclusions about the quality of the article.
But back to the Nancy Test, we have Kenari Maarva overruling Clem and deciding to take Kassa with them, and without this decision once again we never get to the Battle of Scarif. We also have Ferrix Maarva executing some cool psywar on the corpos from the comfort of her chair.
Ep 4 - Aldhani PASS
Vel decides to take "Clem" onto the team. You can argue that Luthen gave her a choice that wasn't a choice, but Vel's decision to swallow the Diego-shaped frog to keep the mission alive mattered. She also manages to keep the team together and on task even though she takes a lot of flak for bringing someone in so late, especially from Lt. Gorn (aside: if I could change one thing about Andor season 1, I'd have Gorn live and decide to stay with the people of Aldhani in the face of the inevitable Imperial reprisals. I *really* liked Gorn, he was great).
Episode 7 Announcement PASS
First, we have Syril's mom, who has managed to get Uncle Harlo to use his connections about a position for her son.
Deedra Meero is all over this episode like Godzilla on Tokyo, as she gets her teeth into the equipment thefts, building her case that there's a rebellion building military forces. She then expertly defends her actions, leading to her being put in charge of Morlana system and Ferrix. We have Kleya issuing a kill order on Cassian to Vel. We have Mon Mothma bringing Tay Kolma into her network with the skill of a heart surgeon implanting a pacemaker. And probably most importantly of all (as it turns out), we have Maarva, inspired by events on Aldhani, deciding to become a rebel.
Yet our writer, unable to see the forest for the trees or the global purpose of the Bechdel Test, sees this episode as yet another example of base female representation fail in Andor. Astonishing.
Episode 10 One Way Out N/A
This episode is so much about the prisoners on Narkina 5, everything else is little updates except for the scene about Jung being a secret rebel. It's a bit like trying to rate how women are depicted in Das Boot. They mostly aren't present for obvious reasons.
Still, we're introduced to Jezzi and the Daughters of Ferrix (even if they don't have a name yet) and though we don't actually see Maarva (as the scene is from Cinta's point of view, who's watching the house from outside) by refusing her meds Maarva has advanced the story more than we can guess, what she's up to is just invisible to us right now. There's also Mon Mothma refusing Davo's offer and the access to funds she so desperately needs.
Episode 12 Rix Road PASS
The only thing I'm going to say about this is that if you can sit through Rix Road and say "Andor does not meet the baseline standard for depicting women" you need to check your diagnostics.

Moments and massive revelations —the really special realm of Hell.
Stubbornness. Pain. Lament. Jealousy. No Confidence but w/ a good selfie smile b/c ur Dog can’t take pictures, & no stick b/c u Def picked the wrong one or something. I say similar thoughts a lot…and w/ teardrops on my guitar …so I’m paying close attention. This stuff is dangersome.
Okay. I’ll just make a list.
Growth and learning during:
- humility. throw your Pride out the Door-you will need help.
- regardless of the wrong’s you righted before getting sick. They’re still achievements, but they’re not realized. So then you think was it worth it? Yes, but is it too much to ask to bask in it for just a bit? I mean I am talking multiple, major Life changes. Ha—here’s COVID-19. After that you better be in for the Long-Haul too ‘cuz…
- appreciation for the very minute of things we do in a Day. Getting the mail is difficult for me. Brushing my teeth —out of breath so have to incorporate breaks to breathe Right.
- there are more people Who care about you than you ever knew. It’s not just b/c you’re going through this, people just may be more Vocal. Makes complete sense but took me a bit to get there.
- you will want to throw something, scream into a pillow, drown in self pity —some of which you think you don’t deserve or are allowed. Do it anyway. Safely.
- some days u just gotta laugh. I mean fr b/c u can’t even cry. And things R absurd LOL
- regardless of your spiritual Life or beliefs. You’re gonna be angry at the God or State of mind supposed to save you and take it all away. Then realize that’s not at all the point. We’re not puppets. Think of how dull Life would be w/o the ecstasy from an achievement or how mundane if we didn’t have anything to have Faith in or Hope for or Love or forgive. That’s why we’re not born in Heaven maybe. We have to try first. I don’t want to be a Lazarus. I wanna fight. And we may never know an answer or reason to any of it. That’s gonna take a lifetime to settle b/c there is no rationality to be had.
- I do not mean this to pettifog. You actually do find out Who comes through for you. That old country song line.
- it’s possible to have a Good Day even full of Pain and Discomfort but u kinda have to make yourself and accept its potential consequence for participating.
- the little things aren’t little anymore. You envy people Who can do normal things. Things you used to do without a problem in the world.
- I’ve had to do a lot of fixing in my Life. This may not be perfectly fixed. We don’t have a Choice but to either live with it as a strength and inspiration or stay negative and pouty about what once was. Even tho you have every reason to.
- you will learn so much about yourself. So much. And most things I’ve learned have been new revelations. May have always been there but there to manifest as needed. It’s not all great but I’m not the same person just a few more grayish hairs.
- you will experience numbness. You can sit with it & pull your compression socks down for a bit, b/c this is something no one deserves. You just can’t live there.
- patience. You will never have to try harder. Hyper, hyper sensitivity.
- a journey to healing IF ever realized will be the hardest job you’ve ever had to do. More overtime than you can be paid. And u didn’t even interview. In a material result and no result world it’s disconcerting not to “get anything back”
- you’ll think back about previous hard times. How in that moment life was the worst it could ever be. How much time do u have lol. Next bad thing, ugh so much harder. And while all of this is very true, and all real, i will tell you that to know true strength is to come into any light possible while wielding off not just the physical, but all the emotions of the rainbow and mind. This even is a choice. People complimented you about your strength and are inspired by your determination to think u can. Girl were we wrong...you can make all the “Right” choices and healthy habits and still get punked over and over by Kevin McCalister. When I appreciate people now I try to take their “all” of them. Who are they in that moment. It is a different Life. And anyone else’s journey? Maybe I’ll be lucky enough to witness triumph b/c of how many obstacles went unseen. Yet they made it.
- the only person allowed to say “it could be worse” is you. Period. To be otherwise feels a bit like a competition. We, going through it, already know that. I have the same complaint when it feels like some people or orgs compete for who’s ‘wokest’? B/c if that’s why we’re / I’m doing how disingenuous.
- when words/phrases like holiday or vacation or lets Go out give you more Anxiety and worsen your Physical Health—that’s when you know your Life has done a 180. Especially if those were the times you lived for. This hard Truth and reality is one of the hardest for me. I already had Anxiety about unpacking after vacation before I packed in the first place but whether or not waiting until you really have to Go to the bathroom so u can (while you’re up) also get some water is just something I would have thought before as one of the dumbest things I’d ever heard. And how cruel is that knowing what I know and feel now.
- Life is not a give and take like we want it to be. If that were the Case I’m not positive we’d ever know what healing or getting better really means. Not only that—you may give more than any other, and nothing. You may see the best doctors and access to all the Meds and tests put forward. Nothing. Pretty soon things are hollow and harrowing. Kind of like the celebrities Who swear that money does not make you happy. It’s like a bandaid that doesn’t stay on in the shower, the ones at Doc offices u get after shots. With mickey on them.
- I think joy is like a preventative medicine. When you practice taking it, You save it up and changes you. Like any of my tattoos, there’s gotta be a story there or something meaningful even if your answer starts off, “well spring break senior year we were…’ you get it. Hangover 1-3 movies. HappYness fleets around. More drug like. Addictive really. Impulsive. Every big chain company’s biggest threat if they can get us hooked. You just got swindled. Ha and to Go a bit more political—people know this scheme is pyramid like and use sneaky ways to have Power over you. Goodness I’m not trying to make this sound like a happy cult but there’s just Def a difference.
- you are exhausted mind body and Soul and regardless of consequence you have to choose some times to be present b/c for me I don’t want to Miss out on vacations and holiday’s. But it is an hourly debate. But I can’t just sit there every significant interaction.
- you’re tired. You’ve been strong, resilient, ppl tell you and u appreciate it. But I get tired of having to stay strong. It’s just so overwhelming and for me especially b/c “I can do it alone.” I’ve failed at that a few times.
- you’ll notice things you never have before. Suddenly they mean something like whether u can drive to get Food.
- being a bit redundant but part of stewardship on my End is allowing the help. Someone WANTS to do something for you for THEIR spiritual needs. Not in a vain type of Way. Let them. We’ve all been on the other side.
- you will experience a full range of emotions. Address them separately. Ppl still might look up to you.
- you’ll wanna give up. Don’t. Maybe your continuing going on is the stewardship someone recognizes in themselves. Idk. Pay it forward?
- lastly. YOU don’t KNOW everything. Karma could very well be your best friend, but that line of thinking is non productive and will only take u so far before you’re complaining re something else. B/c regardless of what I’ve done, —and given its timing you learn a karma hostage relationship is something easier holding on to than facing it. Just deflect.
That’s okay. When ready move on to the New Testament. I’m not fully there. But, I have to think the puppet analogy doesn’t apply here too. Shit happens. Ask that dude running with Forrest with a tshirt company dream that died and some dog shizz. Just control what you can. Easier said than done. Thats why when we do overcome—it means more. It’s engrained. Forever inevitable if you can continue to separate the wheat from the chaff. Card Game of Bullshit.
- ppl at some point think you’re being dramatic and begging for attention as if any more attention is what would heal us
- comments like you look Good or sound fine fall deaf. Well So do ppl Right before they kill themselves. Anymore how u look doesn’t have Shit of a correlation
- you’ll get on ppl’s nerves
- you’ll be resented and questioned how sick u really are. Trust me faking —that’s the last Fucking thing on our minds.
- I don’t need to explain anything

I can't be the only one
Having an anxiously wired brain is living life in a constant:
-everything is so hard to do and it takes so much extra energy to just get through things other people do effortlessly
-will anything ever workout the way I want it too
-oh look! Something I actually want and hope for it to work out
*thing starts actually happening*
-oh my! No. What if it fails? Should I be less excited? What if it works out but it isn't as good as I thought it would be? What if it is exactly what I wanted but it doesn't work out? 🫨
-halp
-actually don't. Do...but don't...don't know if I can handle being helped but if I'm not helped I might perish?
Mushy mess

This is just such a fun description, in both translations:
Comme l'avait dit l'intendant, le notaire attendait dans le petit salon. C'était une honnête figure de deuxième clerc de Paris, élevé à la dignité infranchissable de tabellion de la banlieue.
As the steward had said, the notary awaited him in the small salon. He was a simple–looking lawyer’s clerk, elevated to the extraordinary dignity of a provincial scrivener.
As the steward had said, the notary was waiting in the antechamer – a respectable-looking Parisian assistant solicitor elevated to the insurmountable dignity of a pettifogging suburban lawyer.
Anybody here speak French and can say how to translate "tabellion"? Google Translate seems unsure what to make of it. The older translation chooses "scrivener" here and a plain "notary" on its second appearance, later in the chapter, while Buss opts for "pettifogging lawyer" in the first instance and "pen-pusher" in the second.

@inkedstone cont. from here
"No shit." Aiden's running his old gig out here: Journalism. It's been a very long time since he hung that up like his swords and switched to music, but a last minute favor has him at some conference about some medication from some guy. And that guy?
That's the guy right in front of him.
"You don't even use it for a customer base? I guess that's smart after the whole Twitter verified thing. Personally, all you need to do is hire some 20 year old to run an account for you. But I guess when you're trying to be competition in the pharmaceutical fields, you already have all the eyes on you you need, right?"
"As if I'd trust a self-styled "social media expert" with the future and publicity of my company. Twitter is for idiotic teenagers looking to cause a fuss. Anyone who needs it to advertise has a weak presence. They deserve what comes to them as a result. I've half a mind to buy the thing out from under that pettifogging toddler and delete it from existence as soon as the paperwork was done." Sivana sips at his whiskey, brows raising.
"I understand that you think big pharma is about competition. It certainly has been for quite some time now- a century, perhaps longer. Sivana Pharmaceuticals intends to break that mold."
