A caricature of Vincent Price, Peter Lorre, Boris Karloff, and Basil Rathbone and Joyce Jameson as sketched by Jack Manning for "The Comedy of Terrors" (1963)
if asked to think about a golden age cartoon featuring an onslaught of celebrity caricatures, no doubt Hollywood Steps Out is the one short that pops into the minds of most people. it boasts an endearing irony of having both suffered from obsolescence (which proved troublesome even for the 1948 reissue, cutting numerous scenes and cameos—more about that in the review) and standing the test of time for its memorability and impressive art direction. one of Tex Avery’s most visually impressive shorts to date, the cartoon offers a lot to explore even today, whether it be cut content or the simplicity of “who the heck is this?”
today im watching the maltese falcon for the first time and the way they all talk so fast is incredible. also bogart calling falcon girl his "own true love" after knowing her for approx two days AND while his ex-partner's widow keeps calling the office over and over because SHE thinks he's in love with her is absolutely astounding
Opposite of my last Poll! If you had to kill off one of these Peter Lorre characters or otherwise change the film so they don't get as happy of an ending, which character would you let suffer?
Also please feel free to suggest ways X character could die/suffer in the notes!
I’m sure you are horrified to see I have done another horrible caricature of another horror film legend, the diminutive in height but not in stature Peter Lorre! The original of this was snapped up by one of The Inked Stained Wretch subscribers, so it won’t be in the store.
squidferatu was actually quite a fun episode lol. yeah, theyre doing a looot of callbacks to the older eps but i think this one was fun. one of the funnier modern spongebob eps imo.
Mort Drucker's 6-page "Casabonkers" story for Mad #300, 1991. Caricatures of Peter Lorre, Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, Claude Rains, Sydney Greenstreet, etc., from "Casablanca":
(I know these are caricatures, but personally, I'd have liked a closer likeness to Peter Lorre's actual face. I was still so tickled to stumble upon this.)
I’m rewatching Wacky Races for Nostalgia Reasons, @faustiandevil reasons, and because I had an idea of a Boardwalk Empire-style alternate universe where the Wacky Races are mostly moonshiners and mob bosses holding illegal and rigged races with souped up cars à la NASCAR. Dick Dastardly and the Red Max are from Europe and completely unprepared for the US racing scene. I came up with the idea because the Ant Hill Mob has a blatant Edward G Robinson caricature, and the Arkansas Chuggabug look like moonshiners
Starting with the first doodle, from left to right: Pat Pending (mechanic in racing and distilling alcohol), Rufus Buzzcut (moonshiner logger), Peter Perfect (old money spoilt rich kid, the old money comes from his old man's illegal activities), Dick Dastardly (British WW1 ace pilot vet, out of his element), Red Max (Bavarian WW1 ace pilot vet, also out of his element), Lazy Luke (moonshiner) and his pet Blubber Bear (bear), Little Gruesome (originally a cross between a Peter Lorre and a Bela Lugosi parody, now condensed into a Peter Lorre character: prohibition era gangster with a morbid sense of humour), Penelope Pitstop (mob gall from down south), and finally Clyde (originally an Edward G Robinson parody, now also a prohibition era gangster) and Ring-a-Ding (gangster stooge) from the Ant Hill Mob
everyone, i have a major announcement. it is today that i finally found THIS man. the man who has plagued warner brothers for far too long. dr. lorre. PETER LORRE. Everybody, applaud with standing ovation.
